Hey, Everybody your all right. When somebody rips off your ideas then you know you have a great product. I guess I had it coming. The bottom line is the Gravity Economy board has been on the market for a couple years now. It might not be the biggest seller, but everybody who owns one loves it. So I guess this was a good thing. As a longboard pioneer, surfer, skater, shaper, I'm way over due. My design is over 3 years old. If we are to keep with the times so do I. You Know Who can run with my idea and make it his. With my trust in God,my wife, family and friends who's cares I have what I need in life right here, everything else is just that everything else. Most of you who know me know that I have been selling off my skateboard collection,& VWs. In the near future I buying a new house on the North Shore and starting a new vw business with one of my Hawaiian bros. My skateboard design will only get better with the Hawaiian influence. As a pro skater in the 70's I was inspired by the surf styles of Larry Bertleman, Buttons, Gerry Lopez, to name a few. Sometimes when I skated I would think I was one of my heroes on a wave. That influence has stayed with me all these years. The new Economy boards will me made with the Aloha tradition made with soul, love, and respect. I have some great ideas that I cannot wait to start on. This is my last post on this matter so I can start shaping, Thank You everybody for your support and Gravity for having me ... Adam, without this site longboarding might have been a thing of the past Thank You.

It's not really about making shapes and making your own boards.. We love that, and encourage it. But this is much deeper than that. It's about going to the same manufacturer and taking the same shape that Ed did off the wall and changing the graphic.... Real creative Chris. Way to go!!!.....

I don't want to get into the Big Red/Economy controversy, but it brings up a question I've had for a while, hopefully one of the Comet guys has an answer. It kind of relates to the discussion here, I think.
Several years back, right before the O'Shei shape, Comet came out with what i think were their first Bambo/Graphite designs. They had a "Comet Narrow Race" and a "Comet Wide Race." The "Comet Wide Race" was only available for a very brief time, then transformed into the O'Shei shape. I'd hear it was because there was so much similarity to the Santa Cruz Graphite shape that Comet quit making it. My 2 questions are:
1. Is this true about why the "Comet Wide Race" went away so quickly? 2. How many "Comet Wide Races" were distributed? I got one (stiff model) and love it), and wonder how rare it is.
Thanks,

Maybe those changes make his board better than yours.
I have never figured out why people get so defensive about other people marketing similar products. Can't you just take it as a compliment? I've been in the skateboard industry for twelve years now and my board designs are a combination of ever board I've ridden on.
Making a skateboard isn't like writing software, the variations albeit are limitless, they still border on the "trivial" side when it comes to differences. (in terms of manufacturing and performance)
The only way Chris can be accused of ripping someone off, is if he uses their brand name instead of his own. Should he be paying royalties to Sims for his gumballs design, I don't think so.
If his marketing savy or distribution network gets more people across the planet skating boards the way you like them, you should be proud.

Having been a mega ed economy fan for several years and owning a surf/skate shop in the UK... there`s always lots of different brand longboard come and go, but one that still stands out the most and sells the best and my personal favourite board has to be an ED ECONOMY! similar shapes.... different grip designs... lots of new ideas... but the reason behind the success... the name....

Richy,
When Cherry Hill opened I was riding a 36 inch Taper Kick. Ed Economy was my hero. I've read Cult of the Longboard like a thousand times. I built my first real longboard after reading Ed's whos hot. I was excited to meet Ed at Morro a couple years ago and so happy when he came home early from Hawaii to start LaCosta this year. It would not be the same without him.
Thanks for being such a nice guy Ed. I know you did a lot to get this slalom scene reved back up. I'm having the time of my life.
Richy - I'm looking at that Hobie ad now. It says you are riding your "Wide Load" and that strikes me funny. You used to be a good looking guy. Must have had a hard life. Sorry.

Comparing a longboard of the 70s to a longboard of now is two things, I actually was one of the first riders of the largest lazer trucks that were featured in a hobie add in 79', before that there were no trucks large enough to warrant the size board Ed has out now! So if someone could have had a longboard in that era it was skinny, like the one I used to see Ed riding at different ditches and skateparks throughout and during the 70s, skaters should have more respect for Ed,Who is one of the first longboarders leading the way for decades later!

This has nothing to do with who's board looks like who's. I designed my board my way I shaped it by trial an error. I paid the manufacture to make the template. You know who, went to the manufacture of my board and they just changed a few things, then they were ready to go. If you know who would have made a little effort to try and make it look a little different than mine that would be a different story. With the help of Brad Strandlund who "designed" the Dreggs super tanker. We tried not to barge on that design. The Dreggs has a flat board and rounded tail and is a great board with its own kind of ride. The economy has a square tail and a kick tail more of a narrow board and its own kind of ride. When I called my manufacture today and said did you make you know who's board (yes) I said it looks just like mine. The reply oh no we changed a few things. There is no need to take personal jabs and remarks. This is a discussion board about Decks. If it happened to you, I think you would be mad too. Over the last 3 years I gave you know who 3 of my longboards for free. I know the more I post the more (the ones of you who won't put there real names) can talk the talk. My Idea was to make a perfect longboard that anybody could ride. My ideas have always been about longboarding and keeping people skating & having fun. Anybody can copy someone idea but have a little fun and do a little work making it yours. I guess I will head back to the drawing board to see what I can come with next.

lots of pintails out there, lots of concave pintails out there, plenty of popsicle sticks out there, plenty of nearly identical slalom shapes out there, lots of double action 5" trucks...
LOTS of original designs and designers getting ripped off I guess. Where will it all end?
(get a patent if you are so original)

Ed, It is a shame when anyone rips off your ideas. Unfortunately, there is no patent on the shape of a skateboard, and the only repurcussion you can take against Abec 11 is to do what you are doing, to let people know that The Ed Economy deck is the original, every bit as good, and better cause you are the man (ever go to the skateshop lately? Every board looks the same!). You may, however, be able to take action against the manufacturer. If you paid a tooling charge to have that mold made, then any board pressed in that mold should be yours, or you should be eligible for royalties. I have 7 years of experience in the manufacturing field, and we NEVER used a customer's mold to make another deck, as long as they were still our customer.

Some people never learn. I have been building and shaping longboard skateboards for over 30 years. With the help of Brad Strandlund and Dale Smith, together we created the perfect longboard. 57" long with a Perfect kick tail. The 1st true longboard with a kick that we created out of cardboard and wedges to get it right. I started in 2000 and finished the ready project in 2001. Not only did Chris copy my design! He went to the manufacture where my boards are made and had his made.... TAKE OFF AN INCH HERE, ADD AN INCH HERE, CHANGE THIS A LITTLE, THERE WE GO THE PERFECT LONGBOARD. People like this make me sick. Everything I have worked for and have tried to do for skating gone down the drain. A lot of Ed Economy boards are bought by my friends. I hope you have a lot of friends. I was the one who gave you one of my Gravity Boards I guess its my fault.... Who's Next!

Henry,e-mail me on Vacumn Bag ideas,or at least check into Roarakit boards. No Press needed, and then those fancy 'shaping tools' can be used for making molds, and adding finishing touches, etc. Oh,and while you're looking at Wood, check out both Walnut and Hickory. You'll find out why these were used in early Skis if you check out their physical properties. (btw, shouldn't this all be under Homemade Boards?)

Henry, you have to get big slabs of bamboo from big bamboo trees :P No, really, bamboo is always laminated together to make bigger sheets, since it is a tubular grass and a flat piece can be no more than a few inches wide, if that. The bambo cores are laminated together to make up the width, and really need a top and bottom layer of glass or similar or they will split along the length. They ain't got no horti-culture classes at that there fancy school, do they ?
