Ben's Board
On 9/7/2004 silversurfer wrote in from United States  (24.62.nnn.nnn)

Ben, the landy dh is a fine board. It's a little narrow and has too deep
of a concave for my taste, though. The swift will be more comfortable
and versatile.

I would definately recommend the curve swift 40.

I've got one on the way my self.

Scott is the best in the business when it comes to customer
service and listening to what the customer wants.

He will keep you up dated throughout the build process so you never
have to worry about if you are being scammed or not.
(This is not the case with all board builders).
If you do get the landy I recommend ordering through an on line (or off line)
skate shop (like www.milehighskates.com) rather than through landy's site.

Scott will keep in touch by e mail and also makes his phone # available.

You can't go wrong. A fine board and a great company.

Check out the reviews at www.hugh308.com .

Good luck with what ever you choose and please let us know.

If you get the Swift 40, please tell Scott that silversurfer
recommended Curve skateboards, to you.

Pocket Pistols Christian Hosoi
On 9/7/2004 C-Money wrote in from United States  (155.94.nnn.nnn)

Before I ordered mine, I looked here for reviews and there wasn't very much info, so thought I'd post my own review after I got the deck. These are available from pocketpistolskates.com in a 7-ply 36" and a 7- or 8-ply 38". I chose the 36" as I was looking for something slightly smaller than my old stand-by Afroman Numbchuck and Bulldogs Longboard that I rode most often.

First impressions: Cool Graphics (I got the mostly yellow with mostly red graphics, but the other color combos are pretty cool-looking, also). The shape is classic. I forgot how functional it was, though. That wide tail really provides a lot of leverage and makes the board feel shorter than it's 3'. Nice Concave, and for pools/transition riding I expect it to perform well. I have only ridden it briefly at a local 5' wooden bowl with mellow transitions and like it. My only complaint, and it's a complaint I have registered with most any board I've ridden lately, is that the tail has a little too much flex for me on transitions. I take the majority of the blame as I'm 220# and that's just the way it goes, but I wish they had the 36" in 8-ply, too.

The Bulldogs longboard, due to it's width and "W" concave and the Afroman Numbchuck, because of it's 8 plys still remain the stiffest tails I've ridden as an adult.

Nevertheless, Chicken and the PocketPistols crew are to be commended for doing whatever they did to get permission to re-issue this great shape. I set mine up with the Bulldogs Team (4-color) double conicals and Tracker 6-tracks with the black teflon coatings. I also covered it with clear grip. It looks AWESOME.

Try it, if you're under 200 or so, I imagine you'll love it. If you're big-boned like me, you have to deal w/ alittle tail flex.

DH
On 9/6/2004 ben wrote in from United States  (216.89.nnn.nnn)

I have been looking into 2 DH decks, the swift 40 and the landy DH. I am new to dh. right now I ride a sector9 supercruiser with randall 180's on biltins and noskools. I want something super stable and damn fast. the supercruiser is good for carving and cruising, but is a bit flexy for bombing. any feedback would be appreciated. skatelong

design controversy
On 9/6/2004 brad wrote in from United States  (216.233.nnn.nnn)

I certainly agree with kaspian that this is a sad affair
the idea of design ownership in a market where design differences are so subtle is really not valid.
just look at all those surfboards where the design differences are so minor, yet critical to the experienced surfer, and
look at all those shortboards by all those manufacturers where you can't tell one deck from another

From my reading of this thread, it seems apparent that Michael Bream of Gravity did not really have one of CC's decks to compare, yet ride, and just went by photos and even then, was way out of line accusing CC of stealing EE's design.

My Gravity Brad Edwards board I am riding will be my last Gravity board.
Since I can't afford a Big Red X deck, I will support all the great effort and contribution that Chris Chaput has made to sk8boarding by buying more Green Goonies.

Ride on Chris! and keep giving us crazy stuff to ride on.

landyachtz evo
On 9/6/2004 brad wrote in from United States  (216.233.nnn.nnn)

Bricin, who is on the Landyachtz team (a Landy "rider") noted on CoastLongboarding.com that he prefers the Evo. He says he rode the DH (designed by Shnitzel, who orginally developed the dropped deck) for four years, but likes the wider front and that the Evo is flatter, wider, and turns better than the DH. Based on correspondence with him, I bought the Evo (no he did not design it It was designed by Tom Edstrand another Landy rider). I am inerested in the wider front, the overall wider board, and wanted a flatter board, as the deep concave of my Dregs Race makes it tricker to move my feet about, although providing better stability at speed.

landyachtz evo
On 9/6/2004 Chris B wrote in from United States  (68.60.nnn.nnn)

Never had an Evo, but i had a DH....also a Bozi Wedgenose....same idea in front....And since i dont live in a mountainous area, i've never felt any advantage to that wedged front...in fact , i have serious doubts if the wedge front would have any advantage even in a race (judging by the number of "non-wedge" boards winning races out there) also, with a dewedged rear, like on the DH, i could only really steer and carve if i loosened up the back and steered from the rear!...but...you have to admit...it does look cool....and that alone will sell decks
I'm sure the guys bombing hills at high speed will have a different opinion about that wedged front though.

This whole affair is a sad thing for me. I have lost respect for Ed Economy, despite the fact that the original Streetrider remains my favorite 50-inch-plus longboard. And of course the anonymous pipsqueak flamer who calls himself "T.Hinker," like other people brave enough to post insults but too chicken to sign their name, merits no respect at all.

Its a respect thing
On 9/6/2004 wax wrote in from United States  (24.9.nnn.nnn)

its all arespect thing now when it comes to sales....Just like wheels. Abec11 makes great wheels, 3dm makes great wheels, Dan does all he can to help promote slalom, and help the races run...While his competetor chooses to do all he can for himself...correct me if I am wrong, but at the 2 big races I was at this year mr Abec showed up late, and in the race where he was allowed to stay he didint do much...plus Dan is one hell of a nice guy who doesnt buy his way in with hooking people up with loads of wheels...
I see it the same when it comes to this board issue...Ed has friends that will buy his boards, Ed has respect of many people who will buy his boards and Ed is one hell of a guy
Mr big red x is not as evil as I originaly thought, In fact I enjoyed speaking with him in Brek...Would I buy his products because he gives them away to buy his way in? woild I buy his boards because he WAS a pro back in the early days, and thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread now? nope...my money goes to the guys I respect..
but then again what do I know? I was the slowest guy in Colorado.....and I only purchase gear for 3 racers (5 soon, look out Millie, the girls are getting into it after seeing you) My moneys going to the good guys

Rip off
On 9/6/2004 Chief Red Beef wrote in from United States  (24.185.nnn.nnn)

Try this:

Design a 5' longboard.
Now, when you think of a board that size, and the attributes that it should have you automatically think "surfy" and "longboard". (at least I do, and did).
Naturally the shape that comes to mind is that of the classic longboard surfboard.
Then, you realize that with that shape, and the wide trucks and big wheels that go along with a board of that size, unless you jack it up about 2 inches you are going to get bigtime wheelrub.
So, you add cutouts.
I made a few boards like this.
At that time I hade never seen an Ed Economy board but guess what?
Except for the fact that it's about an inch shorter and 11" wide it looks almost identical to one of Ed's boards.
It's a classic shape fellas.
If you want a 5' board that looks like a classic longboard surfboard then what you end up with is a board that looks very similar to an Economy.

Ripoffs

WOW! Thanx for posting those pics Chris, now I can see what Ed was talking about, except for the cheap looking gawd awful hidious graphics, your board looks like a direct ripoff of the Ed E Gravity board.

Ed, what it comes down to is, you did it first and he copied or ripped you off or whatever you want to call it.

Good on you to take a stand, sounds like Chaput is just burning more bridges, let him hang himself, he doesn't need you to do it for him.

20 feet away
On 9/6/2004 toddc wrote in from United States  (68.121.nnn.nnn)

is not the same as riding them.

Need to cover one other item. If Chris' board is really designed for RIIs, then the cut outs will be in a different place in relation to the mounting holes. Usually about a 1/2' further toward center. This alone makes for a VERY different board based on truck choice alone. I am an RII proponent, so this alone may determine which deck I would buy. That qualifies as a DIFFERENCE.

Now, factor in shorter wheelbase and you have 2 differences. Diff width is 3. Lnger nose is 4.

Yes, ed - they look alike from 20 feet and may offer to a newbie the same ride. But for someone who prefers Randals, wants a board shorter and quicker than yours, these differences are legit.

Maybe you should design a 52" deck and then Chris can call you a rip off and we will all be on even footing again. I'd like a deck of that size - bring it on and let the blame fall where it may!

Close The Door Please
On 9/5/2004 EE wrote in from United States  (4.62.nnn.nnn)

Lets back up a minute
Hugh,
First there was no kissing and making up. I still fill he TOOK my idea & design and made it his way. He said he did not,(ok I agree that's my problem)to each his own. I told Chris I was over it. He believes he did no wrong he made his own board. I can't take that from him. My opinion, his opinion. I agree Ripped off was strong words and said copied, motified. You can't cry about it get over it so I did. I have read every post and have learned a lot from all of you good or bad.
Have you ever tried to debate with Chris he goes in 100 different directions in circles. The bottom line is if you put both of the boards 20 feet away they look just like the same board, A nice copy a nice try..

WHY WOULD YOU PUT THE BLUE OLD ED ECONOMY IN THE PICTURE ? THAT BOARD HAS BEEN OUT OF PRODUCTION FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS. THE REASON YOU THROW THAT PICTURE IN THERE IS TO SHOW HOW DIFFERENT THE 3 BOARD ARE!!! THE DEBATE IS BETWEEN THE 2 KICK TAIL MODEL BOARDS AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLD ROUND TAIL. YOU JUST KEEP PUTTING PICTURES AND TEC NOTES AND MORE AND MORE UNTIL IT LOOKS AS THEY ARE ALL SO DIFFERENT.

LOOK WHAT HUGH WROTE..
He analyzes the crap out of every thing... he gathers as much info as can be found... he picks brains... he analyzes every similar product he can get his hands on. Then he works magic... not always on the first one, or the second one, or even the tenth one... but when he has it ready for market it rocks.

I cannot just leave this alone without a fight,I might as well just walk away with no backbone & rollover and play dead.
I will continue to shape, create, market new products. If others take my ideas and copy them I will just keep pushing forward. As Ian said this is a good thing. But for me to just sit back and let Chris try to suck all you in his little web BULL... I tried to let it go so the decks forum would go back to normal. I posted a few pictures,he posted his pictures. I write about someone he writes about the same person.
A very good friend asked me don't get in to a bottomless argument with a Tec head. Your going to loose. When Chris an I talked I told him what I thought he told me his side. I said {what ever its over}. Now he wants to play the Tec head game. This is that, yours is this, mine is this, yours is that. When I told Chris it was over it was over. This can go on an on but its just not worth it. When Bob asked you to compare the 2 boards I thought oh boy here we go all over again, When I see the 3 boards and all the other pictures it more of photo bluff, blaw blaw blaw. Please don't relist to prove anything else. The board in the middle is just photo prop. Chris's board is 2" shorter than mine, It has a pointed nose mine has a full nose. Chris has rounder corners on his tail mine has more square tail. My board is 10" wide Chris board is 9 3/4th" wide. They are different unless you look from 20 feet away. I have no problem with Chris as a friend, He said a lot of nice things about me but when it gets to business he will go on an on an on until he is satisfied. The bottom line is I fill Chris copied or was influenced by my board. That is my option. Chris told me he tried everything to make it not to look like my board but agreed it did a little "that is his option" So lets get over it stop spinning the web..... I'm sorry but I really hate been kicked when I'm down... Lets get this over with I started it, I suck, my boards suck, I know nothing, you know everything, you win now I will go away..... Debate on tell it like it is.. I'm sorry to all the people who are interested in decks and had to put up with all this crap this week.

Hole Patterns
On 9/5/2004 Chris Chaput wrote in from United States  (66.116.nnn.nnn)

Mercury, I think that you mean 2.09375" x 1.625" (2 3/32" x 1 5/8") which most people round to 2.125" x 1.625" (2 1/8" x 1 5/8").

It is lame but to use only the old-school pattern limits the number of truck options. What's really lame is that some truck manufacturers who use the new-school pattern "centered" the holes (front to back) on the baseplate, defeating the purpose of having the holes away from the ends of the baseplate. I think they did this for aesthetics and/or to change the board angle when doing an ollie. Argh.

Rather than curse the darkness, I make special baseplates that take advantage of the newer smaller hole pattern. It allows me to attach the front or back plate in one of three different positions, giving me 9 different wheelbase/setup options.

Thanks, Chris,

This kind of comparison is something that is missing from most catalogs, reviews, etc. Very helpful. The boards are all very distinctive, and suited for different riders/styles of big longboarding. Killer.

By the way -- I won the longboard division (tied for first) today at a local ditch contest. Truth be told, I think they gave me a high score for riding a 48" board, since those on 40" thru 44" really probably skated better than me.

He's a shot of my "not as fat as I used to be ass" carving frontside on my trusty 48" Acme Retroman...

2.125” x 1.5” is no longer new, but it will always be lame. Who doesn't mind having to remove their hanger just to install the truck - People planning to do nose/tail slides with 40mm wheels installed on their supertanker longboard?

copying
On 9/5/2004 herbn wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

if you trace the shape , get the same wood, and print graphics that try to fool someone that they're getting a established brand, then it is a copied board.Every slight variation, makes a considerable difference and boards( amoung many other things)are always ,"influenced", "inspired by" or just plain old ,"form follows function".From 5 feet away all shortboard trucks (and decks and wheels) look exactly the same,to a nonskater, even to many actual skaters. I've had skaters say they can't really tell the difference "while riding a board" between, lets say an indy and a venture and others say they can tell that a 53mm wheel has been mislabled 53mm, peoples perceptions vary .You can't tell if boards are copied by seeing pictures in magazine or an internet pic. If you hold the boards togther ,you can tell if the shapes are the same,ie a new shogo 70's shape is EXACTLY the same shape as the original ,however it is not an airbeam, and the contours of the kick may vary, the original i have has probabely sagged a bit, it is a tribute not really a copy, and it's made by the person/company that seems to have the right to do so. I made a copy,er tribute:)of the shogo i traced the tribute board onto a concave double kick(only if the board were 50 inchs long) blank, so it's single kick, concave; oh yeah i added about an inch of wheelbase/overall length. If i marketed this board, with a different graphic, would it be; a copy?,a tribute?, inspired by?,would anybody notice? It seems like chaput's been wrongly attacked.
