Go with a Kebbek - great shapes - (traditional, drop and lowered), top notch construction, excellent performance and the best concave in the market.

The Landy drop speed is a really cool board. Might set up one of those with the Randal DH's. I bought mine from SolidSkate.com. They usually have it in stock and shipped very fast! They are cool

ben i recomend a landyachtz drop speed board! excellent design, concave and feel. rock solid underfoot. i have mine set up with randal dh's, rock'n ron's bearings, abec11 78a gumballs and it is the most comfortable board i have ever set foot on. the more i ride it the more i like it. my only complaint is that it is a very heavy complete which makes it a bit slow off of the line but it makes up for it with the momentum down the hill.
i also recomend www.milehighskates.com as an excellent online vendor.

this a reply to a post about ideal low carvy pintails.I find a pintail shape, however aestheticly pleasing, is not really an ideal shape. I like at least 7 - 8 inches of deck width under both feet,a bit wider up front. Usually this would take a really wide truck, or cutaways(no longer a pure pintail shape),or a very long board. I've sketched it out to scale and if a board is long enough, a nice wide standing platform, can taper down into narrow wheel clearing ends. Extra long boards are not really that carvy to me,carvy means different things to different people but quick and responcive is in my definition. I have a 46 inch pintail with randals and 70mm wheels and while is a cool ride and a interesting change,my full clearence 42 inch race(type) deck with my ultra low trucks and 83 mm flywheels does absolutely everything better than the pintail.

Ga. Tom - I am expecting my new Curve Swift 40 any day now.
As soon as it arrives I will post my thoughts.
Have you checked out hugh's review at www.hugh308.com ?
I can tell you that when it comes to customer service and making a board to fit the customer Scott at Curve skateboards is the best.
He keeps you fully updated throughout the build process.
I just recieved an e mail from him this morning, informing me that the board would be shipped today.
I am very excited. Scott did a custom color stain on it and custom grip tape, too. So, it should be really cool.
I like how Scott can customize and personalize his decks to match your riding style or personal preference.
I let you know when it gets here.

Vert-lams

Vertically laminated decks are pretty different from manufacturer to manufacturer, and from deck to deck. Loaded vanguard is vert-lammed oak and is incredibly flexy. Comet's laminated bamboo is snappier. Landyachtz vert-lams have a unique feel, too. By the way, I'm not some big expert, but I happen to own both the Loaded vanguard (wanna buy mine?) and have owned a few Comet's. Have a grain of salt with my advice.
The Good: Very light, very stong, nice feeling action.
The Bad: Gotta use a tailguard, railguard cause the fiberglass/carbonfibre&bamboo (on the comet) wear down much faster than maple. You can get a nasty razortail if you are not careful.
Also bad: gotta wear a mask/gloves when sanding/grinding down one of these boards into a new shape (or making wheelcutouts): you do not want to breath fiberglass/carbonfibre dust, and you don’t want it getting in your pores.
Overall I think the vert-lams are pretty great. I dont ride my solid wood boards as much anymore.

Vertical laminated deck questions

I recently rode a friends deck that had vertical lam. construction. It had a great energy return feel to it. I would like to consider buying one because I don't have this type of deck in my quiver. Are there things to especially consider with these decks? Are they designed for a particular style of riding(Carving and pumping)? I think my friend"s deck is a Loaded. Are there other manufacturers that have this type of construction, and in general what are important things to consider with this type of deck? Thanks!

I don't really know the dimensions of the Arbor Hybrid, so can't make a recommendation between the 150s or 180s. I started with Randal RII 180s on my pintail, but they were too wide and have since switched to 150s.
It also depends on what you intend to do with the board. I've never ridden Randals on transitions, I'm sure they'd probably do fine, but I prefer Trackers for anything I'm going to take on transitions. . .but to each there own.

Colored Grip Tape

Airin, the colored grip tape I have tried did not stick to the board or my feet as well as most black grip tape.
Maybe the brand you are talking about is better, but I'll be staying away from colored grip tape myself.
I've seen some clear grip tape that was pretty good. If you want your board to look pink, put some clear grip on a red deck. I did this unintentionally to my powell peralta back in the eighties. Pink was not what I was going for.

StepGrey,
I've had the 42" Arbor pin for three years; nice, predictable flex under my 160lbs. The concave is steep enough to feel the rail through skate shoes, at least in the front. I've had to grip the board as the stock, sugar coat grip stopped gripping. Some have Koa top and bottom, some top only. I like the look and the ride and would buy one again.

can't comment on the hybrid as to stiffness, etc, but i have had the arbor pintail for a couple of years and love it. it's my "go to" all-around cruiser when i'm just carving or going on a beer run. the wood (i thought it was koa) veneer is beautiful, the pintail is concave and cambered, and it supports my 220lbs with a nice springy flex. the sprayed-on grip is also very nice, should be all you need for a more all-around board. i just don't know how thick the hybrids would by.
i chris klug, parallel giant slalom snowboarding medalist at the salt lake city olympics autograph mine because of the arbor snowboard connection.
arbor uses cheap trucks on their completes, so set it up yourself.

has anyone got any experience w/ Arbor boards? my old roommate used to ride (snowboards) for them a few years back and had mixed emotions but i loved the sylie wood grain and the hybrid 38 looks just right. i'm about to snag a Tiki unless somebody can talk me out of it - i'd prefer a fish shape if i can find it... somethin w/ little flex (i'm 160#) and a kick tail to keep the nose up when i need -

Hey, Hamm. How ya doin? I hope to get out to SD or LA to skate some, shoot me an e-mail w/ your cell phone would love to hook up. I love Coronado.
Yeah, I think if I figured out how to, er, um, "leverage" that flex in the tale, I imagine it could help transfer energy in a positive way, which isn't all bad, either. I have ridden a couple of Deathbox decks. They look great, and the shapes are functional, but they do seem even "flexier." That's the only thing that's kept me from adding one to my quiver. I guess it's just what you like. Hell, didn't we used to ride vert on 6.5" wide fibreflex kicktails and acs 500s and 70something duro wheels?!!! heh heh heh.
Take care, would love to session with you again!

TIKI Rulez

The Tiki rules, it is a really versatile board. Great for transit around San Fran, where you are bombing a hill one minute and pumping the flats the next...
Took the place of my old park deck AND my old downhill deck (see my early review a week or so ago). Instantly become 'my trusty board' - you know - the board you pick when you can only bring ONE with you. The one you pick when the hill looks sketchy. Not a longboard, not a shortboard, just a fine skateboard.
I'm glad it didn't come with wheel cutouts, cause I wasn't sure if I was going with randalls or seismics till I tried both on the board. Each truck would've required a different cutout...I'd rather just do that part myself so I can get it perfect for MY setup.
PS: got TAP Plastic to make me up a half-dozen custom tailguards for my Tiki so I can tailgrind down these steep SF hills...cost me $14 each tho..kinda pricy but fits perfect.

Comet Tiki 40"

Disclaimer: Even though the subject is slightly similar, the CC/EE debate has NOTHING to do with this post.
Has anyone checked out the new Comet Tiki 40"? A while back, I was looking for a board JUST LIKE THAT, with the full tail and the vert-lam, for the ultimate ditch board. Unfortunately, nothing in production at the time came close to what I wanted. So, I got the crazy idea (from someone, can't quite remember who, someone I trade with, anyway....) to try and score an uncut blank 40" Spoon Nose deck from Comet and shape it myself. Keeping with my '80s sense of aesthetic, I ended up with this shape (which I basically COPIED from the SMA 4-planes shape and stretched to 40"):
http://www.unm.edu/~nrosen/k-lee/new/P6230018.jpg http://www.unm.edu/~nrosen/k-lee/new/P6230019.jpg
Since the picture was taken, I have switched to 9" Destructo trucks and Bones Bomber wheels, much better for the ditches. Anyway, I have fallen in love with this deck. It is much lighter (1/3 lighter according to the website) than a similarily shaped and sized deck made out of 7-ply maple, and I can FEEL the difference. Plus, I love the way the vert-lam snaps in the ditch transitions, and the full-tail keeps my rear foot locked for berts and such. I set out to make my ultimate dream board, and I succeeded. I freakin' love this board!!!
Now, a few months later, Comet comes out with this:
http://www.milehighskates.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=13&products_id=78
The nose is slightly more pointy, the wheelbase is a hair longer, the width is a hair narrower, and the graphics are different, but otherwise it's a very similar board. In fact, if either I had waited a few months to make my deck or if the Tiki had been released a few months ago, I just would've bought it and not bothered drilling and sanding the fibreglass. But my impatience led me to shape my own board, and I'd rather have it that way anyway (more personal). Not only did I post pictures of my creation on this site, but I also sent pics to the Comet guys to thank them and show them my awesome dream ditch board that they helped create.
Do I think they copied me or ripped me off? No way. A shape is a shape is a shape. And function demands certain features (like a wide square tail). Were they influenced by my shape? Perhaps. But it doesn't really matter. Actually, I highly doubt that they copied me at all. But, given the fact that none of their vert-lam spoon boards had wide tails before my Ditch Runner and before the Tiki, I'm led to believe that, as a remote possibility, they took my request for an uncut blank (I told them how I wasn't into the taper-tail thing from the get-go) as a suggestion that maybe they had room in their line-up for a full-tailed spoon board. It's probably more of a subconcious integration of influences than an outright ripoff. Besides, I still feel very grateful that they even sold me an uncut blank! Now the world can benefit from having a nice vert-lam wide-tail ditch board available to the public. If the Tiki rides anything like my Ditch Runner (and I assume it does), then anyone looking to buy a nice ditch board should SERIOUSLY consider the 40" Tiki by Comet.

C-Money, That flex 'may' not be ALL bad . About 2 weeks ago there was a guy KILLING Coronado on a 36" Hosoi. I mean this guy was launching like 5 feet out, doing bowl to bowl transfers, the whole freaking deal. After a while we started talking and I was aking him about the deck. He weighed at least 230# and told me it was the only deck he's ridden that has lasted him more than 10 sessions. He was on a Deathbox binge for a while, but was snapping the tails off.
Hey, next time look at the Skaterbuilt CultII, similar shape & dims, REAL STIFF
