I took a putty knife and scraped all of that spray on crap off my Ed Economy (one of the older pre-Gravity ones). Then Used about 4 sheets of tape to grip it... rides so much better with good tape...

Bowl Riding Deck: New vs Old Skool?

Sup dudes,
Basically I'm just getting into bowl riding and wanna get a set up. I'm confused as to whether I should get something old skool like a bulldog (10x32 17.5 wheel base) or a new skool shape eg Deathbox Reul Nude Bowl (8.25x33 14.5 wheel base). Orginally I was skating bowls to improve my surfing ...and want a surfy feel to the ride which of course points to old skool. However I'm getting on okay riding a shortboard so maybe I should go new skool.
Any help, advice or recommendations would be most welcome!

I would say they were catching on to the comet thing a little bit if they used the bamboo for more than simply aesthetic value. The core of the board is still plain old maple. Granted the 2 bamboo veneers will help a bit in the snappiness department, I just would prefer they go full out like the trylam and do a bamboo carbon board. (like my comet street slalom) Julien

Wow, I stand corrected. I took a closer look and wow! It is clear griptape. Those boys over at Sector 9 are magicians. Sorry about the mix up. Don't get your panties in a bunch, it's only griptape.

On a upbeat note. We have recieved the new Sector 9 Bamboo Pintail. Aesthetically this board is awesome. It looks like Sector 9 is using the same clear spray-on grip you find on the arbor longboards. Super cool. The board has a slight camber and concave. The initial flex seems to be about med/stiff for a person around 140-150. If you like the original pintail and the cosmic rider 3 you will probably enjoy this board. Have a great day and go out and skate, this computer stuff is so boring........

I've got an Ed Economy Bankrider and a 36" pool deck, both by Gravity. They're both excellent. I also have stuff from Roe, Tracker (Yarnall W.C.), Bulldogs, Fibreflex, and some MMW decks. They all have evolved to be well set up for their respective mission profiles.
For me, Gravity is about the most "mainstream" skateboard manufacturer I've bought anything from since the 80's, and they're relatively underground compared to the big guys, but they offered really excellent customer service, and especially in the case of the Ed E decks, a totally cool and unique ride.
Plus, Cabbage rides for gravity. OG MD all around cool guy. King of Lansdowne...

I know this thread is dead an all but I gotta add my 2pence worth.... I got the DT 37" HyperCarve 47" and Ed Economy 57" surf, the fiberflex 30" somthingish, a lush 38" dudu and a lush 48" ledgend. The DT does exactly what it says on the tin. I weigh 14 stone, thats 186+ pounds and well, yeah I ride it near the trucks but I've killed this deck for about 3 and a bit months, sliding, park street and general ghetto moves =) but it loves it. The Kick is solid as you like, the flex is lovely and yeah you gotta watch it a little but I know I'm over the weight for it so thats kinda taken for granted.
At the end of the day, Gravity is a great company that produces lovely boards without any kinda reference to any other companies, theres room for everyone and there will always be critisism, its all as Mr Edwards said about being constructive. Take it easy guys. Oh yeah, an the DT was a new board with revolutionary new materials, its gonna have a litte birthing troubles but I reckon its solid.

Glenn, Pocket Pistols are great boards. While I'd be the first to encourage you to check others out, just a note, you'll be comparing from the experience of being a great board to start with. The next time you're at a Race or informal cone-bashing session, ask to 'test drive' someone's board. I've learned a whole bunch from carefully working a different board thru the cones, maybe not as much fun as swapping girlfriends... Aside from Ick and Turner, put Roe on the 'want to try' list. There are others as well, so keep an open mind. I see some interesting innovations occurring in Europe lately, and expect the U.S. companies to be working hard on staying ahead. The next 2-3 years could be very interesting indeed.

dang dudes, i guess it would take alot of time to read all the posting below. so i can't say that i got all the critical points of the conversations, but i can say this on a few things that i did read. micheal bream, i know your reading this. let's say we make a flat birch board, give it a fish tail, then a foamy tail patch, some swishy graphic, and call it the new sector 9 board. i love you guys as a competitor, but your 25 yrs of design has led you to what? emulating a program that you shoot down constantly(or maybe not shoot down but compare your self to). in our 8 yrs(11) we picked up the ball and ran, did alot of the hard work too! legitamizing this fun little market place we all apparently squabble over. i'm just a rep here,i hear it all in my territory the good, the bad, and the ugly. your reps will agree that i've never harshed on you company. always positive, positive, positive. but really man,i would like to hear it from you, we make a mini, you make a mini, we put surf graphics and our boards, you put surf graphics on your boards, i see your into camber now, good one, your board cost less(i don't know the name, but the cambered one)maybe due to the fact that the revolutionary substance it's made out of is a form of plastic? carbon fiber ain't cheep. i know it's hard to come up new and inventive designs and shapes so what do you do? i swear i'll take you off our catalog mailing list unless you clean it up! i tip my hat to all those companies out there making original products, just because they think it'll work better, it ussually does too. it may look wacky or good, either way it's theirs! we are to close to be that close(if that makes any sense) to brad e; your the man. i liked what you wrote. "Educate yourself on all the choices out there, all the companies are more than happy to answer your questions & try to get people on the proper deck for the stuff they wanna do / ride. Good luck with the purchase - Thank you all 4 understanding, Search & Enjoy!" good stuff, good stuff. so this is the deck forum? is it this wild in the truck/wheel/bearing rooms? p.s. i like FORD baby! p.p.s. i wish i could attach a foto of me ripping but im not that computorish.........+ old and fat......
oh yeah it's not over.......
side note on manufacturing facts; our fiberglass boards are made somewhere here in san diego(by somebody who doesn't mind dealing with that itchy crap)but.... we are makeing the rest here in out factory(as well as some of you other favorite brands) last time i checked mike, you had all your boards made elsewhere. lightbulb! why don't we make your boards?
sorry i slipped folks, positive, positive, positive. i'm back. hang loose!

I never thought I'd see the day, I'll have to mark it on my calender.
SUBSONIC SLALOM- I just got my wood/fiberglass/diagonal carbon fibre board from the S-Man and it's definately torsionally rigid, not super rigid but rigid enough. It's still Flat(no camber) with Concave. This morning it worked great on flat ground, 20 cones tightly packed. Mollica got me into the idea of using a twisty board to steer more from the front and my thinner all-wood version does that quite well when I want that kind of ride, where as I think the new Carbon X deck will be better on the bigger courses. I find these boards are JUST what I have always wanted for tight courses, especially on good surfaces. The next test will be to see how they handle rougher surfaces. To be fair, these decks are not the Alpha and Omega of slalom decks as foam/carbon and cambered decks definately have their advantages but so do these wood decks in certain situations. I think for the person starting who wants a good inexpensive utilitarian wide-spectrum deck, the all wood version will fit the need, and for Tight and REALLY Tight they feel REALLY good, responsive, quick reacting, etc. Scott should have pictures on the "future" thingy on www.subsonicskateboards.com fairly soon(what I'm talking about is not the pointy-nosed one that's already on display but rather it will be a blunter "modified coffin" shape). Thanks again to Scott Moore. Adios-Paul

Hey, why don't you little bitches just move on and get sone differnt equipment. The Gravity and Sector 9 companies basiclly created the long skate market place, look back to the product options you had just 4 or 5 years ago, like them or not. They took a chance, supported riders and carved out a share of the skateboard market place of the rest of us to enjoy
For better or worse those companies inspired lots of great new companies and product choices we take for granted today. I've worked in this industry and there are people/consumers who you could give the best s#@! to and they will bitch about it.

Think of it as "error correction" rather than "damage control". People can say bad things about us all day long, and that's OK. But it's when WRONG things are said, I feel it's my responsibility to set the record straight. That's all. Sorry for not being more active on this board. It's tough when you spend a lot more time building product and actually skating it. Also, we run our own longboard specific message board at www.gravityboard.com and we don't have much time for others. We welcome any input, good or bad. And I promise to help keep the story straight.
Peace to all,
Michael Bream

That all sounds about right, I work at Gravity & we're doin' our best. I don't wanna sound too defensive but we juggle a lot of factors to stay in production & we do our best to make skateboards that will last a normal sk8's lifespan at an affordable price. Relativity. & "Dano" the dumb & stupid stuff is, well, just not funny. Not guilt trippy either, sorry. It's a big world with all kinds of room for variety, opinions, tastes & dis-tastes. Roe & Gravity are comfortable making the stuff they like to ride & only hope others will too. Misquoting people like you have is slander / liable. I, too, have pictures of broken product from all kinds of brands, do u wanna see those too, No go break your own, I earned these. They're mine & I'm proud of 'em. I was just emailed this thread & wasn't gonna reply but i thought you guys should know that we value all this input / feedback. We need it, it's essential to keep trying to please ya'all with improved product & revisions for the ever growing demand for better, cheaper product to put through the sk8 grinder. The DT 37 has been made to be, & consistently described as, a cruiser that can do snappy carves (for me). Camber is weight specific so we went with a 150lb subject so if u wiegh more than that u should find a stiffer deck or adapt to a lot of flex (with a mobbed center stance it'll flex way more than a normal stance) mix it up, rip it up remember the disaster was invented b4 concave (in a pool). Just try to keep the feedback on a constructive tone for me, please. No really, Please! Stubbs thanx 4 the kind compliments, keep rippin' buddy! And Steve you cannot go wrong with the Gravity Carve 43", super solid, some flex, sick new graphic too, a proven deck tested in every terrain! trust me. Educate yourself on all the choices out there, all the companies are more than happy to answer your questions & try to get people on the proper deck for the stuff they wanna do / ride. Good luck with the purchase - Thank you all 4 understanding, Search & Enjoy!
