41 mile redhook Haul Ash 5.21.06
On 5/16/2006 peters wrote in from United States  (64.236.nnn.nnn)

May 21st HAUL ASH - woodinville to fremont WA (redhook breweries) and back.

This event commemorates the Eruption of Mt St Helens, some speed skaters jumped on it last year. So a couple longboarders are now crashing the party. Will be pumping most of it, and see how long we go until the medics are called in.

For anyone down widdit, here's the link --

http://www.jimcarson.com/x/rideshow_o_matic.cgi?ride_id=131

After the race (with any luck staying within the 4-hour "max" time) plan is to hang at the Redhook Brewery for lunch and a BREW and some live music etc., then drive up to Mukilteo and watch the CSA Tight and Park Slalom and hang with the group as they heckle me relentlessly...

Not that any one from the UK ever looks here but thought I should make the post anyway...From Next Wednesday onwards I will be heading to Greenwich park on a weekly basis - its an amazing park to sk8 - big nice hills to carve or bomb - the police only seem to hate slalom boarders, they leave us longboarders alone...if you bring a partner there are always lovely places for them to sit and wait and there is always the after sk8 beers at any of the amazing bars/pubs that surrond the park - the only downside is the limited parking around there so sk8 if you can...

Uncle Funky's Design Contest - First Prize: $100 + Skateboard
On 4/13/2006 Robin Mueller wrote in from United States  (66.108.nnn.nnn)

Uncle Funky's will be a skate shop coming to lower Manhattan in the very near future. We are currently seeking designers to take part in our first annual design competition in which we offer designers and illustrators the chance to come up with something that will be printed on T-shirts, flyers and posters over the next year and gain great exposure.

The winning design will get a lot of exposure and we've got two good reasons to participate: $100 and a sweet complete by Vintage Boards, a custom and signed courtesy of Michael Allen.

All the instructions can be found at this link:
http://www.robinmueller.com/UFNY_elements.html

Take care and spread the word....

2006 Mighty Mama Skate O Rama
On 3/30/2006 Barb Odanaka wrote in from United States  (72.194.nnn.nnn)

Hi all,

The third annual Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama is coming up Sunday May 14, 2006 (that would be Mother's Day of course) at Laguna Niguel skatepark in SoCalif. All are welcome to skate or just come out and show your support. This is a non competitive, family-oriented skate jam for women (you don't have to be a "mom" to participate) and their supporters. Event starts at 10 am with introductions of the skate moms at 11 am. Be sure to check out our amazing raffle (all proceeds go to Orangewood Children's Home for abused and neglected kids). Last year our generous sponsors (thank you to all!!!) donated nearly $5,000 worth of great goods and several lucky people walked away with 2 and 3 complete decks and a lot of other goodies.
Details at www.skateboardmom.com

Cheers!

June 17, 2006 Slalom Race in Wisconsin
On 3/23/2006 Tom wrote in from United States  (167.218.nnn.nnn)

Hi everyone - There is a senior center in the town I live in that hosts a fund-raiser run/walk race every June. I talked to them and they are interested in adding a slalom competition to it this year.

Since this is their first year doing it they want to start slow and see how it goes. It will just be a short, tight slalom course on the road in front of the senior center where they start the run/walk race. The road is flat there, so I'll prolly just have two courses of 12 cones each, 6.5' apart for head-to-head racing.

If we get a good turn out, we can expand it to nearby hills next year and have some more exciting racing. I am meeting with the senior center staff on Friday to discuss it further. I will post updates Friday afternoon. Who knows, I may be able to convince them to go for the whole enchilada right off. They already get the roads shut down for the run/walk. The course goes through some nice hilly spots.

For their $15 entry fee, the runners/walkers get a t-shirt and I suppose skateboarders will get the same. Sorry - no fame or large cash prizes. The top 3 runners in each age division get little medals on ribbons. Again, my assumption is that the skateboarders would get the same. There is also a big waffle "breakfast" that goes on all day.

Even though it won't be a high-stakes, glamorous event, all slalom races are fun, and the $15 goes to a worthy cause. I put the word out to Wisconsin skateboarders via freshpaved.com and Silverfish. I have already received a couple of messages from intrested people. Like I said, this year may be kind of low-key, but if we get good turn out and they see how much fun it is, we can expand in 2007.

Whadaya say? Anyone interested?

Seattle Solstice Skate June 18th
On 2/22/2006 peters wrote in from United States  (64.236.nnn.nnn)

The Seattle Solstice Skate is a NON-competitive, timed cruise through scenic suburbs of the city. Grab your nose-riding surf cruiser, drop deck, or long distance pumping machine, and join us Sunday morning, June 18th 2006!

For some the goal may be to do a marathon (or a half marathon) while others may simply want to cruise the trail and enjoy outdoors longboarding from East to West Seattle. The event is timed professionally so its up to you to "race" it or cruise it. I'm sending early notice now in case those who feel they need to "train" for it -- but honestly, you'll be surprised how far your longboard will carry you just resting, relaxing, and cruising!! This scenic course runs through parks, past the Sammamish River, near Lake Washington, through residential areas, the University of Washington campus, and ends at the Adobe Complex in the Fremont district.

The Cause - your $30 entry will go toward a non-profit fund-raising event for the Fremont Public Association (FPA). The FPA provides emergency shelter and transitional housing to homeless families, emergency food and nutrition education, income care for the elderly and disabled, creative and effective volunteer programs, and many other vital services throughout the Seattle and King County region.

This is the 3rd year longboarding Seattle's 13/26-mile marathon events, and will be posted soon on NCDSA Calendar!

Cheers - jp

Please come a join us. Also poison 13 is playing at EMOS http://www.emosaustin.com/ and if that is not enough here are some suggestions fro Bosco the head of the Austin Chapter of the Outlaws.

If you're looking for stuff to do in Austin outside of race time, here's a list of recommends from me. I've lived in Austin since 1989 and these are things that I have encountered in my travels around town:

Restaurants. There are a lot. I would recommend the following for a very unique Austin Experience:

Threadgill's, Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane, The Omeletree, Mongolian BBQ, Loco Maria's Taco Express, Tamale House, Castle Hill, Carmelo's, Maudie's Tex Mex Cafe, Suzi's China Kitchen, Saigon, The Salt Lick, Rudy's, Sam's BBQ, El Azteca. Amy's Ice Cream, Waterloo Ice House, Thundercloud Subs,

Coffee Houses: Ruta Maya, Flipnotics, Bouldin Creek Coffee, Little City, Spiderhouse( It's good people watching place with beer, wine and food as well), Texpresso

Skate Shops/Parks: Tekgnar, Skatepark Of Austin (Skate the 69 Bowl, you'll be sorry if you miss it.) Mabel Davis Park: Public Concrete and Free. Great bowl. There is a Fast Forward in the mall by my house if you have an emergency skate need.

Nightlife: There are a million bars in Austin. 90% of them have live bands at least 4 nights a week. I could make a list but it would take forever. Go to www.austinchronicle.com for a good overview of what's available in Austin. It's updated every Thursday. On Friday night there is a Poison 13 reunion at Emo's that is a benefit for a local business that was destroyed by fire. Poison 13 is one of Austin greatest punk bands ever. They did one previous reunion in like 1995 for the reissue of their complete recorded works on Sub Pop records. Other places to hang would include: The Longbranch, The Jackalope, Stubbs, Jovita's, The Broken Spoke. In general go to the Warehouse District on 4th St for hipster, beautiful people, trendy flavor and the Red River district on Red River for punk/alt/indy flavor. There is of course 6th St. It'll be busy packed with people and lots of bars and college kids hanging out.

Well I think that all I have for you. If you have any questions or need anything please don’t hesitate to contact us.
