If you want to learn the basic survival skills of downhill skateboarding and you live in SoCal, please email me or call me, i'm going to start beginner downhill skate lessons soon!
After watching this group of kids bomb GMR with no braking skills, I've decided a few people might find this useful to survive on the roads!

bungees - YES

I had hoped to put on a crossover race a few years ago in Washington using bungees. It seems to make the best sense. More exciting, faster, and sicker than ramps. And more cost effictive because the only cool ramp in my opinion is a mega ramp or something more towards that scale then what has been used in the slalom and boardercross races. It can be used in outlaws easily and breaks down quickly.
Plus they are soooooo much fun!

TimeShip is announcing our 2011 Race Camp Dates:
June 29th – July 1st
July 6th – 8th
July 27th – 29th
August 10th – 12th
Our Race Camps are small, unique and focused on helping you to set goals and achieve them. TimeShip Skate School in Santa Fe, NM is announcing a series of 3 day Summer Race Camps. Explore downhill, slalom, ditch, push and park racing. Enjoy mini ramp sessions every night and Skate Schools extensive video library and museum of the history of racing. Ride with our Team, Camp on the Ramp or stay at a nearby motel. Camp ends with your very own homework which will help you continue to improve for months to come. You will learn:
Several ways to slow down and 4 ways to stop up to 50 mph. Pushing with both legs, foot braking and symmetry. Hand sliding and wheel sliding and the relationship of the two. Power pushing, tuck forms, and aerodynamics. Tactics of drafting, passing and cornering. High Speed Safety Skills, the difference between Falling and Crashing.
Have you ever raced? Do you want to? When? What kind of racing? Point and shoot drafting or twisty tech turns. How fast have you gone and how fast have you stopped? Do you have more than one way of stopping? What other forms of racing interest you? Do you have someone to practice with?
Get your crew together and reserve your spots now!

So Many Choices

No one wheel or manufacturer can claim this honor. This question is best examined in the context of the course:
Straight and drafty, choose a tall, center set wheel with a hub. If it's rough too, lose the hub or choose a softer durometer.
Tech and twisty, choose a shorter, wider, side set wheel with a flexible outer lip for traction. If it's rough use a softer durometer.
Modern DH courses demand alot of skill from riders, and your wheel choice will also depend on what kind of roll and traction combo enables you to best put your skills to use. Practice on ALL kinds of wheels and show up on race day ready to ride any of them.

I will get to do some racing this weekend in Colorado and I hope we have hot and dry days like today. The local Skate park here in Louisville looks sick, I'll hit it tomorrow to make sure I hit the TSR 3 board minimum with Zion Miller.
Dave Price, thanks for taking the camp kids today so I could come up to race. Call out Claire for Sunday!

Bungees for racing?

Should bungees be allowed for race starts? The US Nationals of Slalom will be the first to test the waters on this subject, allowing bungees for both the single lane GS and the Dual Lane Skatercross on July 12th. This addition to the usual slalom format will definitely add plenty of excitement, but will it be an improvement? Start ramps have been around since racing began and require their own set of skills to be used effectively. Time to start practicing with your own bungee, and if you don't have one yet, you can order one from TimeShipRacing.com
The potential for bungee starts was tinkered with at Ditch Slap, with many riders choosing to try it and some that were not comfortable with it. You can guess who had faster times. There were also some spectacular crashes by over cocked enthusiasts. Now we're going to find out how well those little tiny slalom boards hold up to the acceleration of a Porche....Zero to 30 in 2 seconds! Sounds like skateboard racing is getting a turbo charge!

Joe, thats so funny and so true. I catch myself always looking down, 'yep, they still in the right spot' A lot of times out of habit. I can feel they are in the right spot but for some reason there I go, 'yep, still in the right spot' And since I've changed up speedboards, My foot placement has been better But there I go, 'Yep, still in the right spot'
So funny, might have to see a shrink for that one. hahaha

Foot Placement

Foot Placement is everything. It enables you to use your full skill potential no matter what type of skating you are doing. If your feet are even a centimeter off, your performance is compromised. This is the mostly overlooked yet easily corrected habit. The longer you go without identifying and correcting it the harder it will be. Riding switch will help.
Skate School has been out of session since Ditch Slap, (3 kinds of racing in one event!) There's too many 'pre'-season races! Field trips and road trips have scattered the class. Ditch Slap, Buffalo Bill DH, Danger Bay, Jake's Rash, Gold Rush, Talimena and the California Outlaw Series.....Are my feet in the right place? Slalom season is about to kick in with the Nationals and the World's a week apart (What?) and you still need to look down and see if your feet are in the right place? That's weaker than Canadian hot sauce!
Let's now get ready for the upcoming "Formal Season". At every race it's always the same basic underlying skill. Are my feet in the right place? How important is it, they are close! I'll adjust it if I need to....
You should be able to tell without looking down, by feeling the edge of your hard edged race deck with your thin soled worn down skate shoes. If you do look down you should see the front foot covering one of, or VERY close to the front hardware bolts. The front foot is the key to maximum steering performance, the closer to the front axle the more response. This is a major draw back of most of the Drop thru / Drop down DH designs. Stability at speed has it's price.
If you just NEED to, just can't help but to look to see if they are in the right place then you should consider the following help:
Install a foot stop by placing a foam wedge or by inverting a single piece of mounting hardware, maybe place an old bushing or piece of wood or metal or a custom Pirnack fully adjustable trinket. Anything! Just push your foot against it and you'll know that you are good to go.
Thinner skate shoes, to feel the exact location of your foot. Get 2 shoe buddies to ensure that you always have the thinnest possible soles.
Practice at home on your race board, jumping to switch and back. Don't jump high, shuffle, jump as exact as you can. Your feet will still never land right where they are supposed to, so you'll always have to make an adjustment to get them right where they belong. DON'T LOOK DOWN! Feel it through your shoes, or practice barefoot (indoors on carpet, right Kenny!)
If you think that practicing your stance switch has no value then do ten squats in this position and post your observations here to the class. Switch racing is coming to an event near you, and hey, turning is turning, prize money or not.

Hey guys, just wondering if any homies out there have a room booked for Ditch Slap with some space in it? Or if anyone could hook up a ride from ABQ airport around 7pm on Wednesday the 29th? Obviously I'll pay my share for a room and can offer gas money for a ride. Can't wait to be back in the land of endless flowing concrete. Please shoot me an email if you can help, thanks in advance.

The Crosstown Race this year is sponsored by Loaded boards, we're looking forward to it! Notice how Skip Marcotte skillfully pushed his board into traffic, waited for the cars to stop and THEN jumped on it to rejoin the race.
That's the safest way to cross a red light intersection, there are more tricks but we won't tell you, come out and try it yourself. Crosstown will be May 3rd as the last race of Ditch Slap '09.
