Just got back from having a nice Vietnamese dinner w/Joe Iacovelli and Julicat joined us for the event. It's great to finally meet the person that brought together the ingredients for Megs board at the Farm. Nick and Julianna Iacovelli were the topic of many a conversation. It will be great to be able to meet the whole family at the Gathering 2002!

I'm mounting a protest against Dave G as Sargeant at Harms. Damn it, he's gonna have those kids all loopy for gin and tonic! That will mean less for me! Lime prices will skyrocket...it's not gonna be pretty.

Bob "steel wheel" Staton: It was a pleasure meeting you at La Costa and it is always illuminating to read your posts here at the NCDSA. You are a great resource with a wealth of knowledge and experience in organizations, if your advice isn't taken to heart we would truly suffer. Thank you for sharing your insights.

USSSF - WSRA

Bob, There is much wisdom in the things you've said here, and much of your suggestion speaks right to the intent of the USSSF. I'll only "take a pass" on one of those suggestions for two reasons, but want you to understand that I haven't just arbitrarily dismissed it. My only comment would be on the suggested title of WSRA. I have given MUCH thought to the specific words chosen for the name of the organization I've proposed. In the first place, running a "World" organizations brings in a whole lot of additional work, such as International Monetary exchange rates, language difficulties and any responsibility we might have to the U.S. Federal Government re: income generated "offshore". This is why I have elected to stay with a U.S. or domestically-focused organization. The bottom line there is that truly operating a World-focused organization takes more work, and more work equals either more highly-specialized, Professional volunteers or a greater financial outlay for staff to handle the additional issues. Given that, there is no reason why, should our solutions and actions prove to be valuable to the community, the slalom communities of other nations can't adopt the same framework or "subscribe" to our system as they can in the golf world. Besides, we can't even get the people in this country to agree that there should be such an organization or to even see the potential value in having one. How much easier do you think it's going to be to get the world to agree on such a fundamental concept? My second piece of feedback involves the fact that there is no mention of the word "Skateboarding" in the title. There are many forms of slalom in the world; i.e. automobile slalom, alpine skiing slalom, water skiing slalom, quad and inline slalom, etc. I think it would be a fundamental mistake to leave the defining word "skateboarding" out. Someone else suggested something like the CRA (Cone Runners Association). What does that title tell someone who just happens upon it? For all I know the CRA could be an association of people who feel the need to dash from one ice cream shoppe to another. Think about the USSSF (and pronounce it: U-Triple S-F) and you may realiza that although one letter longer than your acronym, it states VERY clearly what we are and what we are about. Thanks though for the larger, more pertinent suggestions. If all I can find questionable about them was to nitpick a proposed name, the rest of them were, very apparently, wise and valuable.

I think that what may be of great benifit to the slalom community is a wide based service organization that functions as a hub/clearing house/visitors center/resource center. An organization that has an "in Box-Out Box" approach....information/needs/ideas etc. flow into the org. are processed and programs are developed to address these issues and flow out to the slalom community. A Pro race program, an AM race program, A slalom industry products promotion program, a contracts review program etc. , an internship program. An org. that seeks general membership and gives out service awards for volunteer work. Various Org.s, products, mags., and contest/race promoters come and go, but a well developed and maintained service org., like the Lions Club etc. can last for centeries. A service org. is able to secure a wide range of grant monies to service and maintain its programs. I would give it a name such as WSRA, World Slalom Racing Association. This org. would help to develop baseline standards and support the formation of other local and regional orgs. that would represent trends and creativity of various individuals and regions. WSRA would not be above or below any other slalom org. but a constant friend and partner. I have no intention of starting such an org. myself, and you are probly thinking "say what?" but it sure works for me.

Arab... Well, it's gotta be true! Just as an example, the Knuckleheads have helped start a UK slalom movement, which, tho small, cant be said of any of these other orgs whose names are a blur of initials I cant even remember (except SSS cos its my name too...) Can it? The Knuckleheads are reaching out and getting people all over the world into it, it's inclusive and not politically riven like many of the other people involved (if the La Costa aftermath was anything to go by!) The Knucklehead Racing Team is the only one to be in! Respect to em all, especially the ones that actually enter the races! You guys RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKkkkK KKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how DC shoes, Vans, Osiris, etc. will feel about the skate youth turning to a barefoot lifestyle?
Will the kids ever be able to avoid dog poo with the skills of Dave G?
I argue he is too valuble as a Knucklehead natural resource to be used in this capacity.

Then I guess the motion passes for all junior Knuckleheads to fall under the YUK / $poiled Child Racing or YUK / $CR Division with no discrimination to locale, etc.etc. Due to the convoluted nature of all things gone wrong I would like to extend invitations to any jr. Racers interested in YUK /$CR. It don't cost nothin! Any one to second the motion? Any opposed?

You bring up a good point arab. If an org is intrinsic to the skaters themselves then the promoter of the contest would have cooperate or follow suit. This could empower the members w/certain advantages.

A-rab, (I stole this from Debs)
Just why would you join an org if you already expect it to fail? Is it what YOU can get out of it? I believe the purpose of an org to to promote US. Ask not what this org can do for you but what you can do for the org..I know, I bastardized Kennedy`s speech but I think it makes a clear point.
You also keep touting the same reasons you foresee as the org`s failure though those arguments are nulled anf void.
You state..."The Promotors are gonna do what they damn well please..." and I think that`s a given.
You also state..."Call EDI,IGSA,RAIL,Red Bull and tell them that you want to unify Downhill skateboarding and that for a small fee(on top of what the racers have already paid to these other 4 orgs)that you will provide: Rules,Regulations,Points system,Scheduleing for all of thier events, Credibility and Competition, the proper way on setting up a downhill course, and so much more to list because its the right thing to do so why list it. There will now be peace and harmony and everybody will get along much better because we are now a UNIFIED Org..." and the purpose of the USSSF is to NOT unify DOWNHILL but rather unify SLALOMERS.
So when you state..."I still want to be the first member of the future defunct org USSSF, Just to show my support I really dont expect anything else..." am I to assume that you would board a plane even if you in fact knew it was going to crash? I think not.
Yes, some or your statements make sense but some just have no merit. Why not help out and see if you can make argument FOR the USSSF? Now that would be ballsy of you!
When all is said and done, I hope to be able to skate with again ;-)

Boardman: You are the chairman of the board! We sorely missed your presence at the consortium which is now about to recess. We did reconvene though just to consider your proposal and the outcome is as follows:
An instantaneous agreement has been reached amongst the members of the Board of the Coalition for Organization Assembly Committee of the Youth for a Unified Knucklehead (YUK)... uhm, er, to allow and assist in any formation of localized groups for the advancement of the slalom experience which can be named for any locality or thing.
After careful deliberation and judicious interpretation of the Knucklehead Handbook of Rules and Misconduct it has been found that it would be inappropriate to delineate from other members in disparate locations by identifying such group as a such 'n such location chapter of the Knuckleheads. Instead it would be highly advised that the Knuckleheads retain their unity to uphold the motto: "Though we may not skate together, we do stand apart." That being said I will have to reread this statement in the hopes that I too will understand the statements made here.

I would like to ask the Knucklehead Board of Directors if I can start a Jr. group under the name of Spoiled Child Racing - SCR
Training will be boot camp discipline, including corporal punishment (i.e. a paddle) for infractions such as Criddling, DQ's, not setting a knocked over cone after a run, talking SMACK (unless it's during head to head runs), bitching about rules, regs and timing issues, and other conduct unbecoming a Slalom Racer. Ollies over cones will result in court martial. Other infractions will be dealt with, making offender's pump their board uphill. Please advise with approval. The kids want to race.......
