I'd like to know how to stop at the bottom of a steep hill without jumping at full speed. I know it's a slide technique but I don't know how to do it; furthermore how to do the sliding tricks (360,180...) Thanks to anyone who provides quick and efficient answers

If you like carving down long hills, try loosening your rear truck a bit and tightening your front truck, it works great, and gives you this great sensation when turning sharp. By the way, I do this on Independent 215's.

I used to get up gutters. (or i call them curbs)i used to have a cloud nine (s9) and i could not ollie on it cuzz it has the mostr wheels and heavy indy 215's so i would spread my legs and stick them on each kicktail (cloud nines has two and right beforwe i was gana hit the curb i would lean back sticking the front of my board on the curb the i wold lean forward to get the back one up. This trick may vary becasue of board size i can not do it any move on my gravity that is a 47" because it is so long.

queit eric. Longboarding is cool. I mean, more people are into the shortboard scene, sure, cause its easier. More people walk because it would be harder to crawl around, understand? Its just like Snakeboarding, which, is cooler then both, I believe, but that is just my opinion. Its down, pick your own thing, but no one really wants to hear what you think you little poser anyway, all you can do is ollie, just like shea, your just as good as the L from Hell! And that hair, no. And your shoes, well, even you know those things are queer. Out

Last night I had a dream... I dreamt that my longboard carving skills had improved so much that I was able to rip down a beautiful hill using my shortboard. Of course, it wasn't as good as carving on my longboard, but my skill was good enough to actually pull off carving with a new-school board with small hard wheels, sliding all over the place. It was a blast! Then I woke up. And I thought, "What if I could actually do that?!? What if i showed up at a group ride on a great hill, and rode my short board alongside the longboard riders, and kept up with them. Would that be a BAD thing? Would I be shunned?" Maybe different "disiplines" CAN cross, and new skills can be built, and we CAN be accepting of new inovations while preserving the original principles of a particular style. Maybe.

Kicktails.
My longboard, a gravity hypercarve, did not have a real kick tail whenI got it. It just had about a 5-6 inch of the board sticking out. I could use this a bit as a kicktail. But then i went into a store Called "Emerald City" and they had a gravity kicktail that you can buy. It works great to you just cut the grip off where you want the tail then you take off the botton of the kicktail and smack it on where you want it. Tghen when you need new grip you can just lay the grip over the new kicktail.
Why Do I have It. I use the kicktail for many resons.....1) I use it to lift up my frtom wheels whenever i go up a drive way from the street so i just dont run into it and stop. 2) I use to to launch curbs so i dont scratch my board. 3) I use it to launch my friends ramp, with out it i would not be able to to do it. 4) The kick tail provides the aggressive longboarder the ability to do many tricks, some longboards can even ollie thanx to the kicktail.
The kicktail is a must for the aggressive lonbgboard.
I had a cloud nine and i think that is the lny longboard that looks wierd with that kicktail because it is so big(kicktail) and looks goofy...but the board is cool

I am the happiest guy alive. Todoay, I went to these great hills, ahhhh..... Some of the best carving I've done. What was do nice was that the hill wasn't to steep so, you could really carve well. One question, when you guys carve, how sharp do you usually turn? I like long, sharp turns. :)

Thanx eggman you realy helped me and and uhh bob or whoever made the page.Thanx to you to.
Parks I road in a park in Phenix arizona and evry one ther thought my longboard was a banana board or "a really big shortboard" but the park was fun but not when it was croowded so we went early the next morning and no onw was there. I recomment first time park riders to try it first when little to no people are there. This is better cuzz you can try stuff and not be bugged by rollerbladers. and all.

Webmaster T, Thanks for your recent post on riding techniques. We seem to be getting an influx of people that want to do shortboard tricks on longboards. I cant understand it. I am a strong believer in the goals, focus, and mission of NCDSA. Remember; longboarding is not a way of life - it is a lifestyle. Everyone, keep your focus and remember the roots of longboarding. This is what we are trying to preserve and it is our duty to carry it on. Best of luck in your new position with the Association.
Best Regards, Carlo Medina

i rode at a park in reno earlier this year, it was a small park, mostly like a street course but all nice, smooth cement. anyway, it had a nice bowl in it and i went to drop in and the board looked like the diving board. the parks here (nyc) suck for longboarding due to the fact that it's all ramps w/ tons of rollerbladers.

Hey Eggman --- thanks for the plug about my page. I think its cool to do tricks on longboards -- whatever you can get to work. However, I think that the real strength of the longboard is speed, power, and flow, so if you ignore those elements and just try to ride it like a shortboard you will probably miss out on the really enjoyable aspects of longboarding.
The closest I've gotten to a park on my longboard is a nice ditch here in town. Its a blast. Super, super fun.

Yo Anthony. Longboards are really fun in parks. The kind of park they are best in is one with a "snake run". Parks that just have street courses are no fun. Any park with not too much vert is fun. Santa Rosa is supposed to be good as well as Temecula (aint that right chris?) Ok, have fun and don't be a "bottom feeder" (that means try to get as high as you can on the banks) Ok, later late.

I know I am breaking the rules of etiquette, but my quest for skills is driving me to this: How do longboards handle in skateparks? Are there any types of parks better suited for longboards? Thanks and sorry to offend.

Try this today:
Start frontslide to goofy stance, slide, jump (eeh. no ollie, please) on your board and change your stance regular and do another frontslide. How many times you can do that. I do 3 jumps. Be careful about your ankle. I am practicing to do more. It looks cool!
Also what is the right techniques to do 360 slide. I have done it couple times, but usually it break off 180. I start doing it front and forward centered stance.

Listen up you heel-flippin' monkeys, this webpage was made for people to talk about downhill skateboarding. Hence the name, Northern California Downhill Skateboard Association. Not, Northern California "Ollie to a backside 50-50" Association. This section of the page "Riding techniques" was designed for people to make posts on sliding, walking the nose, and other longboard surf tricks. "Riding techniques" does not encompass all areas of skateboarding such as ollies and grinds. Please take this into consideration when making your next post.

to my swiss friend pas: word.
it seems the ones trying to divide us are the unimaginative (that's right), hardline longboarders who should've just stayed in the surf and grown their hair long all day. we're all pretty much trying to do the same thing right now, and we don't really amount to much. i think this site is one of the best things around for us and can bring all trains of thought to one place to discuss them. but i think that if we can have a chat room (very cool), i think they're might be some space for a tricks page, right?
anyway, to ollie, place the ball of your rear foot on the very end of you tail w/ your front foot a coupla' inches in front of your rear truck. once you snap the tail down, raise your front foot off the board and kick(harder than on a shortboard) a couple of inches short of your front truck and level it out. very simple explanation, very tough to execute. (see, it wasn't that bad, was it, old-timer? :-P)

Come on guyz, shortboarding and longboarding are two different things, if people want to ollie a longboard what the hell---->do it, but at the end of the day if all you want to do is tricks then buy a shortie (still cool) if you wanns carve big hills at speed buy a sidewalk sedan (even cooler). You wouldn't take an F1 racecar round a rally track or a windsurf down a mountain (hey that sounds pretty cool actually). Us longboarders aren't meant to have the same aggresion as shortboarders, we don't slam and bam, we carve the waves of the cities (poetry ya) so lets just chill, find those big busting beautifull hills and surf the earth------------------->BIG RESPECT TO YOU ALL*

I am horribly addicted to downhill skating wether I am on my Mat Hensley H street, or my longboards. But i never would've got into skating if it wasn't for shortboards. i skate everyday regardless of the type or board. For christ's sake ya'll must've forgot how it feels to do something totally by yourself without anybody doing anything to you except the law, and old ladies. Why do you guys give two 5hits if any kids wanna ollie, kickflip or whatever on a longboard. It should mean nothing to you. We are just showing you up. Get over it.
email me, and i will let you all knoiw how i Ollie on my longskate.
Ride with pride regardless of other peoples opinions later, Sean a
