Carving loops Got tricked into going to a mall, twice a year I let it happen just to check, still not cool.Afterwards I went out skating this new hill I found while roadriding (non lycra on a road bicycle)finding hills to climb in quiet neighborhoods means coming back later with a skateboard. So this hill is way to steep and has a couple to sharp turns to bomb in total darkness. So I'm just chillin, using my very special homemade board, carving up a storm and on a slower section I hold a backside carve non-drifting and just tighten up the radius as it slows and I just looped it around until I'm headed back down the hill, I don't remember this seemingly simple move actually being possible on vintage equipment maybe on those wide california roads like in that video clip but not around here.Someone let me know.

To Brian, if you don't want your wheels to slip around, try getting softer wheels, that's your problem. NJ

Videos.... I got a couple of killer videos. They are not longboard, but they will teach you how to look stylish on the board. Check these titles out. Freewheelin- a 1970's film staring Stacy Pretta Downhill Motion- a 1998 film that is from 1975 footage. Totally killer. Downhill barefoot at 55mph, early pool footage, Signal Hill downhill, early luge, and lots more. Skater Dater- 1965 movie of some bad ass kids on hobies. Five Summer Stories- Surf movie with a small skateboard section. MTB Sports- promo video. Killer carving on a mountain board.
I am gonna do a write up one of these days and put it on my page to review them all. If you want to know where to get them, e-mail me. Later late.

Regarding Bones Brigade -- besides the first one (Bones Brigade Video Show), there is really great downhill sliding in the 2nd one, "Future Primative".

Longboard videos worth owning ?
Anybody recommend some longboard skateboard videos ? I'd like something with guys bombing hills, doing slides, etc. I got Red 9 from Sector 9. It was ok, but I didn't really care about surf footage or shortboard stuff.

brian: kickturns at the top of banks are fun and variations on slides are cool to do. BUt just make up your own style by varying other moves.

i don't mean to sound like such a little whiny newbie who is afraid to try things on his own, but, i was wondering.... i get pretty boarded when i'm just cruisin around and lately i've just been doing "tricks" as i call them like standing on the board w/one foot, walking back and forth on the board etc. what do you experianced guys do in the way of tricks?

I left town from Hurricane bret, and went to San Antonio. There are many various good hills to skate down.I got going pretty fast down broadway st. going with traffic(PDQ)ands i came up on mulberry st. and i had no room to stop and i ended up stepping off my board and eating it really bad. I need to know some more stopping techniques besides carving maybe some slides, can anyone help me out.

With my new Stroker board I noticed a tremendous increase in ankle stability at speed, it might be balence, it may even be psychological(a little) but when I went out with my new Sector9 concave pintail ,I was very impressed at how stable the board felt. It has Randle2 trucks kingpins flipped and tightened to expose one thread, so its actually pretty loose but man was it stable, I went through a 90 degree left turn that the hill feeds right into at high 30s mph , I've been clocked at 42 on this hill and I was almost bombing it, right into the turn ,cool. Not everyone can have as quick a longboard as my Strokerboard but how about a sub30 inch slalom board, I think someone still makes them ,carve down your favorite hill on a board that would surely wobble if you bomb over 25 mph and just keep turning, after a couple rides breakout your big bomber, careful you might fall over when you lean into your first carve and the board doesn't steer, but man at high speeds you'll feel really comfortable and able to push things further.

Joe,
-Check out the riding locations archives or go to search and enter houston
-There are several ways to stop. You could drag one foot on the ground until you come to a stop. You could run off your board (not reccomended). If you have enough room you could carve yourself to a stop. Or you can do a slide, which is by far the most fun and looks and sounds coll too. Check out the archives under riding techniques, or go to search and enter slide or coleman slide
-The setting of your trucks is a personal trial and error process. generally the steeper the hill and faster you go the tighter the trucks
-before you waste $35 dollars go to the ncdsa links page and click on: "minature bearings australia (great bearing faq)

To scott: if you want to kickflip try doing it old school styles. place your feet side by side in the middla of the board and push down with one foot while lifting the board up from the side with the other. you have to jump sideways but its fun and you dont need a kicktale or have to ollie like a dumb newschooler (joke'n).

Well this may be the wrong place to post this message, but nothing else was more appropriate. To my question: with what setup do you have the most grip(with the same wheel): longboard, shortboard, wide trucks, narrow trucks... A friend of mine has a snakeboard and he can do a lot tighter turns at a lot higher speeds than I can with a 44" board. The tighter turns I understand, but if we do about the same turn he can do it with a lot higher speeds without starting to slide. Thanks for your help.

to scott: i have a 44 inch board with no kicktail and i can get about an inch off the ground. i think it depends on how long your tail is and how much you puch down when you ollie. i don't know about kick flips, it'd be tough.

Sliding - if you are at all into downhill sliding, you have to get the first Bones Brigade video- I got it from www.surfvideo.net for 19.95 plus $5 shipping. It is unbelievably cool. Only about 5 minutes of footage, but in '84, these guys were on 30" boards with trackers and bones and were tearing it up. Frontside 180's to fakie, to frontside 180 to original position...also, backside 360 slides...etc. etc. Way cool. At the end of tape there are some crash sequences and these guys are able to "run off" their mistakes. So they are probably not going over 15 mph. I love the stability of a 54-60" for bombing and carving, but from what I see, an old school board of 30-33" with hard wheels (at least 85a, possibly more) is the way to go for sliding. They all wore sliding gloves also. Killer stuff.
