Hello,
I've just posted a new longboard trick tip to my site --- the Frontside Manual, performed in a ditch, on a 48" longboard.
Check it out!
Later,

todcar thanks for the info i have infact tried it but most often tend to fall heal side like a short lil' fat kid. i think alot of the strength comes from diggin in your quads on that one and the position of your back. i recently saw some rounded wheels that i kinda dug and my buddy and i were discussing if we thought it would increase or decrease our abilty to sustain something like slide, 'cept we call them side wheelies(: what do you think..or anyone for that matter?

the short wheel base of the cosmics doesn't make them the best choice for downhill.

Would a board w/ camber such as the cosmic series from sector 9 be good for going downhill? I know they are sweet for flatland carving! THanks!

Killer page. It's got tons of great tips and info, but I didn't find any really tips for doing slides. I am a decent boarder, but I still can't slide, any advice? Thanks

Liv If your wheels are breaking contact with the road and you are going sideways, you are sliding. Which we cleverly call "doing a slide".

Cliff, thanks for the Cliff-notes on the race, do any other racers care to post their perspective?
By the way, I was the guy on the 60" board trying to learn slideing at GRA. SOunds like you had a good race. Good luck on the sit ups, racing and stuff.

i fear that i may sound like a complete hick but whats this slide stuff? my pals and rip hills as much as possible up here in cold ol' Maine. we dont no the lingo we just get silly on the shit and egg each other on to do the impossible, thats about all there is to do. i am confident in our riding abilites in fact we may be doing "slides" and not even know it, but can some one just give a definition....i know but really we are just backwoods kids thats my only excuse(:

Todcar,
Here is why I think there was such a difference in the times at the Barrett Junction race. D.T. had and has a sprained ankle and couldn't push much at the start of the race. Joe D. had a slower time but it seems he is inexperienced at this type of downhill. He is a good skater and with practice will get much faster. The course was over a mile and had many turns. Most racers would brake before entering the sharp turns. The only guy who didn't was Dane Von Bommel. For myself, fifteen seconds back of Dane in qualifying, I am so out of shape that I couldn't even hold a tuck for the entire course. I'm now riding my bike to improve my leg strength. The guy who qualified first probably had the benefit of an error by the time keeper. His time would have been competitive with the luge riders. No one was upset about this, the guy is a very nice guy and everyone qualified for the finals anyway.

Speed? Hey you guys, I've got a question regarding the times at the Barret races - maybe you can offer your perspective DT - I noticed that the speed varied from roughly 3 minutes (fastest) to 4 minutes (mid rear pack) to 5 minutes (the trailing few). What exactly accounted for the big gap between Van Bommel's 3 minute run, DT's 4 minute run and other guys 5 minute run? Were the slower guys carving and controlling speed more? Wiping out? Dragging feet? What allowed the fast guys to be fast? Technique? Guts? Insanity? Just curious. In my opinion anyone who made it down in one piece did great.

Cliff Coleman does all his slides on a 33" board. I do mine on a 37", and a 42". The smaller the wheelbase the easier to break into a slide. On Bones Brigade Video Show, they are all using 80s style shortboards similar to Cliffs.
I DO NOT reccomend wrist guards, i DO reccomend sliding gloves. these plates on the gloves are not rubber, they are made from cutting boards, in europe they use garvel, some wood, etc.... if you do a search on sliding gloves you will find many tips and directions on how to make yourself some sliders...they are cheap and dont take too long to make.

And YES! I can slide my 36", I'm pretty stoked. It is easier to 180 to fakie than my 48", and just cranks into a coleman with more ease. Backside 90 degree slide is hairy though, still working on that, pings out from under me somewhat.
Damn I'm stoked.

i have been skating for years asnd have recentley started skating a really big hill 50mph is common anyhow today there was a following wind and the runoff is short i use the foot drag but it is sketch and carving unsteady then i thought slide. i can slide well at 25mph and skate away but at 45mph it is f###ing imposable sorry for the language on a steep hill as the board will not turn that sharp as the front wheels will slide i would like to seee someone do it or tell me if it is at all possible and how.

Is anyone here doing Colemans on smaller decks, say 36"?
Anyone able to slide boards like S9 Cosmic 1 or 2?
I have a 36" slalom deck thats pretty stable, I'm going to try to learn to slide it tonight, so I hope you wont be reading about it on the crashing section tomorrow.

Hey DT and others Are wrist guards OK for bailing, falling, wipeouts? They seem like they'd have good shock absorption. Some "bounce". Sliding gloves are just rubber knobs attached to gloves, right? On longboards I actually ride pretty slow and just do tricks, but I'm trying to go faster and would like to not kill myself. But I have lots of falling experience from high speeds on in lines. You can slide on one skate and one wrist guard for twenty feet or so and pop up again. Let me know.
