loudest gig? certainly les naufrages/linton kwesi johnson/butthole surfers outdoors near toulouse around 1991. they obviously turned the master volume up for LKJ then forgot to turn it down again for the buttholes. hehehe the buttholes played for 3 1/2 hours and showed a real time surgical training film of a heart/lung transplant on the projector. my head still hurts.

Chuck, I remember 688 very well, played there many a times, the first time there was so rad to see Iggys set list in oversized black marker (27 songs), I left my mark all over the place too! Hows about Varsity burger up the street, had to have one every time I was in town, then head over to little 5 points to check out the local talent.
Black Flags sound system was a guy named Dave Rat(Rat Sound) I brought him on board with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers latter on after our other sound man got murdered in a drug deal gone awry.
Best Black Flag show ever, Santa Monica Civic 1982-3? Everything Went Black, final show with all of the memebers that played in the band throughout the years, I was there working for the Vandals who opened the show, Black Flag played in an oversized dressing room for practice for about 3 hours before they went on, thats where the real sh%t was goin down! it was heavy to say the least........
Funny story at that gig, Human the OG bass player for the Vandals takes me and "O"(former staff photo for transworld and guitar player for Fluff) onto the roof of the Civic, Its a domed roof about 80 yards from side to side, we climb up these stairs onto the side and O and I are going "Human where are you taking us, hes like just come on wait til you see this, were walking on this roof and it feels like we are walking accross a small planet, as we start to crest towards the top, Human is saying "can you see it can you see it" were like "see what" he sez "look at the top" as we walk closer we can see something on the very top of the roof but cant make out what it is, all of a sudden were there and he goes "look is that the coolest thing you have ever seen!" He took a big ol DUMP right on the very top of the roof in the middle of downtown Santa Monica over looking the beutiful Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Pier, He was so proud of that Poop! I sh$t you not.
To make this skate related Jan Ackerman the OG Guitar player of the Vandals is a Gnarly pool skater that kills the Combi at the Block, His kid Jan jr is a rad little pool skater too, Dad refuses to let him skate Street he is born and bred on Pools only.

Glenn: e-mail me so we can leave this forum MOSTLY skate-related!
I sold my Mark 6 Alto back in '83 for $1,000, like you said, they're going for 4-5,000 and more now. Sucks to be me, but hey, I'm still married to the same wonderful gal, so it was a good invesment!
I would love to get another Mark 6, but I have had a very hard time finding them locally and, as you recommend, I wouldn't buy one w/out playing it. Especially the later years, one might be the best horn you've ever played, other ones seem like Bundys. So, I am thinking of going with a new model. The Reference 54 has gotten rave reviews, said to be based on the Mark VI, so I'm really leaning that way. Lists for about 5,600, but I've found a couple brand new from big volume shops for about 4,000.
Anyway, any particular model of Yamaha that's the way to go? Let me know your thoughts. . .my e-mail's above.
I've heard good things about Yanigasawa, but mostly their curved soprano which is said to be the best soprano going right now. . .

C-Money, nothing beats a Selmer MK 6. That's my horn, it's a tenor circa '68 or '69. If you can one that plays nice get it. They only go up in value. I bought mine for $2,800 it's now worth somewhere in the $4,000-$5,000 range. If I was going to go with a modern horn, Yamaha all the way. They are technically the finest horn ever made. Best pitch and consistant tone throughout the whole range. Yanigasawa is suposed to play real nice too.

ur13...and anyone else who likes Black Flag...have any of you heard the Black Flag tribute album Rise Above? Normally this sort of thing could end up being VERY lame, but Rollins put it together, using his band and various guest singers. It ain't all great, but it definitely has its moments. Hank Williams III sings No Values...Iggy Pop on Fix Me (a whole new meaning)...Keith Morris on Nervous Breakdown...Lemmy singing Thirsty and Miserable (!!!)...Tom Araya of Slayer singing Revenge (shreds!). Good stuff! The bad? You'd think Ice T singing Police Story would be a good thing, but it just doesn't work. Rollins indulges himself on a few songs...it is cool to hear Black Flag songs with Henry singing that are well-produced, but they are just too clean so it looses some appeal. He doesn't sing as well anymore anyway. Anyway, if you liked Black Flag, check it out. You can hear song samples on Amazon.
Best shows...too many to remeber, but some highlights would be the first time I saw the Ramones, summer 1981; X in a tiny club, fall that year; Clash live in 1982, again a year or two later; Iggy Pop in a tiny, tiny club (688 in Atlanta...semi-cool club, they would let you paint or write anything you wanted on the walls, as long as you didn't mess with the wall to the right of the stage....where Iggy had written his set-list for his 5-night stint on their 1st anniversary in about 1979 or so..it stayed untouched until the day they closed); 1st time I saw the Butthole Surfers, and another show not too long after at a tiny tiny club, back when they were camping out in Georgia and playing out alot in Atlanta and Athens; Cramps a year or two ago in Miami, then again in Orlando...heckling the opening band and wondering if I was going to be ejected from the House of Blues for doing it; Nashville Pussy a couple of years ago in a small club in Miami, with the original lineup, when they were still playing Whang Dang Sweet P***T*** (Ted "Kill It And Grill It" Nugent has to ask them for permission to play that song now!). Skinny Puppy in miami about 1990. Fugazi, about 1991. Minutemen, I think it was 1983 or 1984...whenever their last tour was before D. Boone's untimely death...after the show my buddy and me were skating to IHOP and they drove by...we caught them at the next red light and told 'em "great show"...they just looked at us Like we were nuts.
I can't stand seeing bands in large venues. After years of tiny clubs, any other way sucks.
Loudest shows: two-way tie between the first time I saw Iggy Pop at 688 (3 guys from Blondie were his backing band!...ears rang for days...first time I ever saw people fornicating in public at a show), and the final Black Flag tour at 688...the only time they ever let them bring in their FULL sound system. Flag's sound system was legendary for its shear volume in small venues.
Worst shows: some crappy new wave bands my girlfriend dragged me to, one was Gene Loves Jezebel, can't even remember the other. I feel asleep.
Favorite after-show memory...at the Majestic (notorious as one of Atlanta's greasiest greasy spoons...but since it was 24 hrs so many nights ended up there)...with the guys from Neon Christ and Corrosion of Conformity...Mike Dean decided his toast had too much butter on it and scraped it on the side of the table. The waitress was furious, and asked him if he did that when his Mom gave him toast. He just said, "Yeah, if she puts that much butter on it." Guess you had to be there.
Anyway, I took hundreds of pictures back in the punk rock days, dozens of different bands, got 'em in magazines, fanzines, and record sleeves. Some good stuff, if I do say so myself. One of these days I need to scan a bunch in and get 'em up on a website for folks to enjoy.

I used to work for TSOL and they had the same booking agent as Stevie Ray Vaughn, So whenever SRV came to town we'd get carte blanche, Every show was just amazing.
Best show ever that changed my life 1976-7? Blondie, Ramones, The Runaways at the Goldenwest Ballroom in Norwalk, ca.
Went out and bought a Leather Jacket the next day!
Had the fortune of doing a tour with the Ramones also and every night was just KICK-ASS 1234.
Never seen a bad Damned show either.
But my all time favorite has to be Dick Dale around 1969, I saved my allowance for 6 months so I could buy a guitar after that.
I've been playing guitar for over 30 yrs now but am at about a 3 yr level. Its OK though I'm the best damn punk rythem player around.

Best: Wasp 1989 headless children tour(not musically but performance) Hammersmith Odeon London Worst: Machinehead, Monsters of Rock Donnington Park.
How about loudest gig, remember seeing Onslaught (British thrash/metallica rip off) 150k in a small/medium indoor venue (London astoria) jeez it took over a week before I could hear again. Fun though coming out of the gig shouting to a friend coming home on the underground!

Oh yes, I do remember the cross gender song Hes a wowmen, She's a man.... That was an ok song (JMO) or: "Steam rock Feaver...Screaming Rock, Believers!"
And Yeah I agree, Ulrich was no Vocalist remember: "Hell Cat" again great guitat work, Terrible vocals!
Then again, Lemmy sounds like broken glass garggled vocals But "Motor Head" is the creation of Speed Metal and are considered Mentors amongest all metal bands. "You know im going to lose... and gamblings for fools, But thats the way I like it baby, I dont wanna live forever.... AND DONT FORGET THE JOKER!" *amen*
When Metal was cool! JD
To keep this skate related: Everyone should get a Santa Cruz 5ply with Bennet Pro ad-tracks on OJ wheels with Hover bearings and go skate a sloppy home made 1/4 pipe with Ted Nugents "Great White Buffalo" distorting because it's just too damn loud for the single speaker 8-trac player!
(ah yes, When Metal was cool!)

Glenn: read your post about being a sax player. I'm currently doing some research to replace the selmer mark VI alto I had in High School (my H.S. band teacher hooked us up with Woody Herman and the Thundering Heard, Buddy Rich and his Big Band, and Maynard Ferguson. We sent 3 guys to North Texas State).
I fell in love and sold my horn for my wife's engagement ring. Now I'm looking for a new horn, going to go with a Tenor. I want a new Selmer, and am leaning towards the new Reference 54, model 74. Wadda ya think?

JD-
I read an interview with Roth back around 1980, and he explained that the reason he left the Scorpions was because they were starting to do those "mega cheesy lyrics". He said that the final straw was "He's A Woman, She's A Man" (which he claims has his worst lead ever). But where did he ever get the idea that he should handle lead vocals for his Electric Sun project? *cringe!* Still, the guitar work more than made up for his "vocals". Gotta add "Tokyo Tapes" to the desert island roster...
And to keep this somewhat skate-related, I was turned on to the Scorpions by one of my pool skating cohorts, whose older brother was stationed in Germany in the mid 70s. He sent tapes of "this incredible band that had UFO's guitarist's brother in it". Wore those out while we drove around looking for pools in the Pasadena area...

msk, you mentioned Ulrich Roth under Best G-Players
Right on! Roth was intense years before any Mettalica (and all those E-Grinding metal bands) showed up on the scean. "Tokyo Tapes" is still up there on one of my all time favs. I heard (could have been an early 80s rumor?) Ulrich was fired from The Scorpions during rehersals of "Love Drive" CD Wanting to put in "Crazy Ass Intense" Driving metal leads into such songs as "Loving you Sunday morn" Thanks for bringing up good ol Ulrich! I gotta go now dig up my "In Trance" or "Virgin Killers" albums and reminese the REAL SCORPIONS remember? Before all the pretty Boy MTv "Black out album" w/mega chessy lyrics for Americans who love thier sing along Anthems! *JMO* (ie) 1, 2, 1-2 1,2,3,4 "Cant live, Cant live with out you" I bet that song makes Ulrich stomac turn!
Yeah, the Scorps used to rock in the late 70s! (pre Mtv)
did you know: The scorps first album "Lonesome Crow" released in Germany had the bands actual phone # listed on the back cover. We called it in 1981 and the number was changed *I imagine because "The Zoo" album was getting a little radio air play in the states...
Although I did go see Scorps both nights of there "Black out" tour...Why? Well of course to see IRON MAIDEN open both nights on their "Number of the Beast" tour. Funny thing was at the time I was going out with this German girl (Kimberly Buchmann)who told me "Yeah my cousins band is playing with Scorpions" She had never heard of Iron Maiden just that her cousin Bruce was in a Metal band. She was only interested in Scorpions. At 1st I thought she was lying to me about her cousin Bruce. but like I said she had never heard of and could care less about seeing Iron Maiden. A few months later She introduced me to Grandma Dickenson living in Seattle. She was telling the truth and Grandma had a couple pics of little "Bruce" Yet, even grandma didn't know of Iron Maiden just that her grandson was a singer playing loud rock N roll in a band.
again, Thanks for bringing up ol' Ulrich Roth He was (still is?) one bad ass Rivit Head Shreader! I gotta go find those albums in storage now. JD

if you believe, like I do, that "a five star album then is a five star album now" then this site is pretty indispensable for helping to dispose of your CD buying dollars.
what if you want a jimmy smith soul-jazz disc but you can't pick from the many, many recordings he made? well here's where you go to try to pick one.
so have fun looking up all these folks suggestions there. that website also links the styles and what not so you can find stuff like the stuff you like.
