I was grinding this curb on a new-school powell board and this dude on a bike stops and ask me what I'm doin. we got to talkin and he says that he used to skate. He used to bomb hills in san francisco. he leaves and comes back like ten minutes later with an old school board. It had a madrid micro-series deck, ten inch wide indies, the best bearings I've ever seen(I think they are generic because I don't see a brand name), and 63.5 csi Kryptonics. He gave it to me! no questions asked. he just hands it over along with a nose and a tail plate, the worlds hardest bushings and 1" risers. I tightened the truck because the first time I went out I got road rash on 25% of my body after I lost control to speed wobbles. I had my mom track my speed and i was doin 30mph. It is the smoothest ride ever. at christmas I'm gonna take it to the san bernadino hills and try that out. please tell me what you think of my outragous good fortune.

That was weird@#$%^. Anyway, about that Realwood contest- did anybody even hear anything? I think it was just a market research scam and nobody won but Realwood. What a lame trick! I thaught those guys were a pretty cool small time outfit dedicated to the riders. Oh well- another one bites the dust. I just thaught it would be cool if we actually got to read some of entries because I know there are a lot of imaginative and damn funny folks out there.

Hey fellow downhillers! hoping that we can get a little forum going here on the upcoming Mammoth downhill EDI race. There's gotta be some people out there that raced or attended the race last year. Any info would be helpful, such as course, length, appx speed, surface condition, etc, lodging ... I attended the Santa Rosa race last month and there was a great camraderie between all the standup guys- love to see that continue. Input???

As promised, the new magazine "International Longboarder" is coming this summer. Thanks to the support of our advertisers, photographers and writers, the longboarding community will be hit with what I hope will be a great publication.
It will arrive in California (for international distribution) LATE JULY. Honest. Promise. Pick up your free copy wherever longboards are sold. And don't forget to submit a story (scene report, product review etc)
cheers

Yeah I have seen the Fusion in the stores. They do look like they are cool. Did not get to ride it, but it is concave, with a kicktail. If only they were around when I bought my Cloud 9.....

James,
I'd be up for it. I don't do as much hill riding as I'd like to, mainly because I don't have anybody to go with, and I hate walking back up to the top of the hill. I'm not really into bombing hills, especially at high speeds, but I'd definitely be up for carving/colman sliding.
Actually, you might want to consider other kinds of longboard riding besides just downhill, San Diego has some great skateparks. Temecula, yeah, I know it's not really San Diego, absolutely rocks on a longboard. I hear that Encinitas and Escondido are good as well. Plus, Mission Valley should be open soon and Ocean Beach in the Fall. There are a few public parks, Santee, Carlsbad, and Vista, that are okay, but don't really have the lines for longboarding.
It might be cool to set up some cones for slalom, and I know of one parking lot that's pretty cool for catamaraning. Plus, a friend, J.R., and I do a bit of trick riding down at the beach, mostly old school stuff, nose walking, spinners, nose and tail wheelies with the odd kickflip thrown in. J.R. is solid as a rock on wheelies; he goes forever and is completely relaxed about doing it, like he's taking a walk in the park.
Either you email me, or I'll email you when I get home tonight. Later,
Chris

I am trying to start a team of riders in San Diego to make a video and market it to boost exposure for the sport. I am a partner of a digital video production company and know all the hills of San Diego. Just need riders, and if you don't want to do video, I'd still love to ride with you. I know hills anywhere from 20 mph to 55 or so, all safe and paved well. E-mail me if you have any interest.

Rich, you forgot to mention that when you go down the hill on your stomach, that you can always drag your chin and nose to help brake.

There is buttboarding and there is skateluge. Both are about the same except buttboarding is done on a regular long skateboard and you are sitting up. The skateluge isa speciallized piece of equipment. It is still the same position sitting down but the boardis made from tubing or wood and is most definitley not a skateboard for any other purpose than skateluge. You can't ride one standing up. If you did you are a better man than me. Anyway I prefer to laydown to go downhill. For more on buttboarding and skateluge try the HAE website at www.skateluge.com.

Buttboardin' is using your normal board to go down a hill on your butt or back, like luge without the special equipment. Good alternative fun ... get some slider gloves and go down on your belly head first using your arms spread on the ground as brakes and stablizers :-)

Does anyone know what a buttboard is? I understand Randal riders just swept the Euro Championships in Austria. In addition to standup and streetluge competitions, one of the events was "buttboard". What the heck is that? It sounds painful. If you were ever paddled as a child, this may be an event that you would want to avoid as it could cause traumatic memories to resurface.
