I read and replied to an e-mail from Anita Martinez before I returned here and realized she'd posted here as well. The information I relayed here was third-hand, wrong and I cruelly failed to consider that I might even be spreading bad information. I've have apologized privately to Anita, but want to add a very public apology to the Martinez family and any other of Pepe's friends and acquaintances who I might've offended or hurt with my rumor spreading. I am very, very for any pain that I have added to your current circumstances with my thoughtless, emotional behavior.
I wish Pepe were still here, obviously, but as someone who has lost a brother to nothing but his own alcohol-induced stupidity, all I can say is that I'm glad (if one can be glad about anything related to this) to know that Pepe's passing WAS NOT from a drunken stumble.
Again, I was wrong. I believed something I heard from someone I didn't really even know all that well, and in my shock and horror I blasted it out onto the internet. My actions were foolish, thoughtless and ultimately hurtful. I am sorry.

Let's set the record straight for the Einstein's of skateboard community. Pepe Martinez did not die from any alcohol related accident. His death was a result of a blood clot that had developed at his brain stem due to a head trauma suffered in 2001. I should know this, becuase Pepe was my brother. This message is directed at everyone that has obtained information from second, third, and more sources and dont realize the hurt that they are directing at his loved ones.
Anita Martinez
Pepe you will be in our thoughts and live forever in our hearts.

I don't know if this will necessarily mean anything to the people on this site, but I got word today that Pep Martinez, veteran pro street skater out of the Washington D.C. area, died yesterday as the result of an alcohol-induced head injury. The first news I've received about Pepe, who skated for Capitol Skateboards back when I was their Distribution Manager, is that he was drunk, fell down (no skateboard involved), hit his head wrong and died. For those of you who might've known Pep, my understanding so far is that his funeral will be here in the Washington D.C.-area next week.
Another one gone too soon. We'll miss ya, Pep. When are we all going to wise up and remember to wear our helmets when we're drinking?

Yep, Dreamland/LRM got it. Permits have been cut. Things should start rolling next week. Should be done by end of November (if the weather cooperates).
Whiting is waaayy up north. No? Where are you located?

Maturing Skateboarders Gaining Clout
By PATRICK WALTERS Associated Press Writer
September 19, 2003, 5:30 AM EDT
PHILADELPHIA -- It's not just their parents' fight
anymore, dude.
Skateboarding has matured to the point that many of its participants are now old enough to have their own children, and they are gaining a surprising degree of political clout.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in Philadelphia, where a growing number of politicians, including both mayoral candidates, are considering whether to lift an unpopular ban on skateboarding at LOVE Park, a concrete plaza beloved by skaters from across the country.
Republican candidate Sam Katz even clumsily hopped on a board to show his support for the cause.
Skateboarders in Boulder, Colo., took concerns over poor facilities straight to police, who helped persuade the city to build an expanded park as a way to keep youths out of trouble. Skateboarders in Louisville, Ky., got that city to build and expand a state-of-the-art park.
"Five to 10 years ago, a city council wouldn't even recognize skateboarding as legitimate or want to build a facility," said Tony Hawk, the most famous name in skating.
The numbers show why that may be changing.
In the 1980s and '90s, when the sport was first growing in popularity, young skateboarders had to rely on their parents to press for skate parks and ordinances favorable to the sport. Many of those same skateboarders continue to ride as adults -- and they're not shy about boosting their sport.
"Until this point, skateboarders haven't really been that old," said Scott Kip, 28, president of the Philadelphia-based Skateboard Advocacy Network.
The National Sporting Goods Association estimates that nearly 10 million people over the age of 7 participated in skateboarding in 2002, making it more popular than tackle football and ice hockey.
Teri Olander, the athletics administrator for Boulder, said skateboarders showed politicians they are a group worth listening to. "I know that they are aware that it's a population that has aged, or at least that is attracting those kind of 30-year-old teenagers," Olander said.
Skateboarders have been so successful in Long Beach, Calif., that city officials have five skate park projects on the table, including one slated to open next summer. Dennis Eschen, manager of planning and development for city parks, said meetings on skate parks started out with just 30 to 40 skateboarders showing up with their parents. But he said now there are frequently more than 120 skateboarders, and they speak for themselves.
Since skateboarders are promoting a positive activity for youths, it's hard for politicians to say no, said Dick Guthrie, director of human services for Claremont, Calif. The city's park was built in 1998, but skateboarders quickly filled it and are pushing for an expansion.
Skateboarders' newfound political muscle has helped them get expensive skate parks built at a time when local budgets face drastic cuts. Officials in Louisville, Ky., spent $2.5 million on the first phase of a skate park that opened last year. Because of demand, officials are spending another $400,000 on enhancements and renovations, said Michael Heitz, director of Louisville parks.
In Philadelphia, the biggest push is for a policy change at JFK Plaza, known as LOVE Park because it is home to the well-known Robert Indiana sculpture.
The park has been regarded as a skateboarding mecca for years because of its staircases, ledges and curves. But Mayor John Street banned the activity last year, saying the skateboarders caused significant damage to the granite and that the park looked better with its new grass, benches and plants.
This summer, however, skateboarders got a positive response when they went to the city with a proposal that would reopen the popular lunchtime spot to skateboarding, but only during certain hours.
Philadelphia City Councilman Frank Rizzo, who favors lifting the LOVE Park ban, says skateboarders already have his attention.
"I want as many friends as I can have, and if the skateboarders want to be friends with me, and someday vote for me, that's part of this business," Rizzo said.

Got the latest news? This is from the Denver Democrat Gazette:
"Two local men were seriously injured when their pickup truck left the road and hit a tree near Mountain Plant on State Highway 38 early Monday morning..."
"L. Idenor, 33, of Boulder, and Billy Ray King, 38, of Denver are listed in serious condition at Shriners Medical Center. The accident occurred as the two men were returning to Denver after a frog-gigging trip. [Note to city slickers: frog-gigging, or frog-sticking, is how, armed with a small pitchfork, you catch frogs from the creek bank. Frog legs make a tasty supper.
"On an overcast Sunday night, Idenor's pickup truck headlights malfunctioned. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the older model truck had burned out. As a replacement fuse was not available, King noticed that .22 caliber bullet from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering wheel column. Upon inserting the bullet, the headlights again began to operate and the two men proceeded on esatbound toward the White River Bridge.
"After traveling approximately 20 miles and just before the river, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged, and struck Idenor in the right testicle. The vehicle swerved sharply to the right, exiting the pavement and striking the tree.
Idenor suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident, but will require surgery to repair the other wound. King sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released. "'Thank God we weren't on that bridge when Eric shot his nuts off or we might have been dead,' said King.
"'I've been a trooper for 10 years,' said Deputy Snyder, 'but this is a first for me. I can't believe that those two would admit how the accident happened.' "Upon being notified of the wreck, Diana, Idenor's wife asked how many frogs the boys caught, and did anyone think to get them from the truck."
Apparently no frogs were caught, the men simply used the trip as an excuse for their homosexual rendezvous.

Duane-
1) do you want your board (cut down fluid Stinger, small pivot fulltraks) back? I can have my mom sent it from home.
2) What buggy team were you on at CMU. I'm now a mechanic for Fringe. We're going to win this year... and I'll probably end up pushing D class or something.

Let us not forget brahs that endorphine production is the main thing. Some bit of white trash yells "faggot" at the h0dad from his gas powered couch whilst h0dad rides his tanker round the hills last week. He did not expect to be required to stop for a red; h0dad arrives at the window to inform the young item of genetic garbage that in this situation we have two people: one who is in the slot and lovin every minute, and another who scowling around in his cage delivering abuse. h0dad pointed out that he prefers to be in the slot having a good time, and that said piece of genetic misfortune is lucky not to have a good paint job on his ride.

yep, you are correct. handplants are more difficult than slalom. hell, some slalom racers can't even ride down a ramp, much less ride up one and do fancy trix. the only slams I saw at the slalom races were from people trying to roll down the start ramp!
