I too love this forum. However, in my opinion, there is a bit too much "policing" going as of late. I made a post a day or two ago referencing the lack of new posts. I think "hibernating" was one of the terms that I used. This post was not ment in a derogatory way. It was a reference to the lack of new posts which most of us like to read and interact with others who enjoy our sport. Even misrepresented as a slighting post, should this have been removed? Now, do a search on my name & you will NOT find this post. Is there an influx of new personell that is dictating the direction of this site and it's content? Mine Fruher please elaborate.

My two cents
I love this forum at ncdsa. So many issues...I predicted longboarding would start mushrooming and it has. The sport is too much fun for just a handful of people. Right now we are in full on growth mode. It will come to certain level whereby you won't be surprised to see longboards featured in ads for Chrysler ads...or Gap ads. The question remains however... is this a good thing? Pepsi has had their logo in the skateboard community for almost 25 years. A lot of people probably feel they've just gotten into skate culture. So, I guess from my perspective, sktateboarding will always attract media and big business cause it's cool and advertisers want those young impressionable eyeballs. As for myself, I am happy when money and attention is devoted to the sport I love, but I always know that the bubble bursts eventually. When everyone is on it, youth culture rebels and moves on. It will be interesting to see what happens with longboarding which really isn't about youth culture. I think it's young adult culture. I truly believe things are going to get mighty interesting in 2000.
cheers mike

Thumbs up to the Gravity Team Travels video! It takes you to every location you would ever want to skate. Pools, parks, pipes, and ditches rule this video. Get it and you won't be disappointed!

I know this might sound like rehash to some people out there in rootsland, but 'Downhill Motion' is one of the best surf-skate oriented videos I've seen to date! It was filmed by Greg Weaver and Spyder Willis circa 1975. You won't see anyone barefoot at 60 mph today. Thanks for the tip ILB!

One more thing...I do love the Pixies, a rock band.
They seem to capture some of the feeling somehow...or just remind me of surfaris past.

Yeah I hear you too FUZZ...I bodysurf, no not bodyboard, no, not ride the whitewater at a family picnic...as in getting tubed man, all that good stuff.
I get disdain from a few trendy board riders who never surf in winter, only surfing 2ft slop on sunny days. The TV tells them they are the only ones who really surf. Last winter at my favourite break, Kahutara, a sacred place, it was 8ft and hollow. Posers would not get in and me and one other bodysurfer rode it alone for 4 hours, they said we were nuts.
I was proud too Fuzz.

You know, when I was in high school, skating was about the uncoolest thing you can do. Now, your not considered cool if you don't skateboard among teenagers. This is all in all good cause skating is becoming more and more accepted by society, the only problem is now since boardsports are being embraced by the mainstream, it is now being reduced to a trend and a fashion statement. That's what I think sucks. I think most people (especially teenagers) forget that skating should be about having fun and not about sneakers, pants, and the color of your hair. Walk through a mall these days, you see stores that sell this image. Shit, I even flipped through this teeny bopper clothes magazine (alloy) that supplies the american youth with the latest trends and they had models wearing Indy, G&S, and counter culture shirts. Man, I thought things are getting a little ridiculas now, it's now fashionale to wear independent shirts. Hey, if you feel comfortable wearing the threads of the latest trends, than I guess that cool, as long as your not compromising your personality to look cool. Oh yeah, Wouldn't it be kinda wierd seeing someone who lived in Kanas sporting the latest surf gear!

I hear ya fuzz, but snow, skate & surf aren't the only sports turned "trendy". Among longskating, my other passion is volleyball, both 6 man indoor and 2 man beach. I remember growing up wearing the clothes that reflected the volleyball scene at the time, Sideout (VERY oldschool v-ball), Mossimo (started partly by beach v-ball great Brent Frohoff), Redsand, Primitive Prints (by Scott Ayakatuby) to name a few. Myself and my few friends were the only people in the whole area wearing the volleyball gear. Until for some reason we notice more and more people wearing the clothes without having ANY idea what they stood for! Now it disgusts me to see someone in a Britney Spears video, wearing a redsand shirt, because it's the style. Little do they know, one of the best players to ever have touched a volleyball (Steve Timmons) is the pres. of this company.
I'm digging myself in a hole here, because I always get a lot of crap from people when I bring this up, but I can say in a way Fuzz, I can relate. I just keep true to myself, wear what I like, listen to the music I like, skate how I like to skate, and live how I LOVE to live...

Reef - pseudo surfers. A band who try and pervade a 'corporate image' that they are true 'rockin' surfers, an attempt at coolness, hype, image...??? God I hate all this baggage that comes with the surf scene... Reef don't surf, they just prat around in the shore-break... They're music is cool though (particularly older stuff - 'Replenish' era)... I once played 'hackey sack' (and two mates) outside Newport Centre, with the lead singer, Gary - he really sucked, couldn't keep the hack going for more than two kicks, while we were pulling out all the mad shit - head stalls, 360's, toe stalls... Man, I was proud. If they got away from the 'surfer' stuff it'd be ok, but surfers they ain't. I was having a surf about 4 years ago down at Croyde Bay, an early 'fresh' May morning. Real nice, playful 3-4ft faces, mmmmmmmmm! About half way through the session Gary (recognised him from seeing Reef in the Bristol Bierkeller about a month earlier) and a mate of his paddles out...and gets minced. They flapped around for about half-an-hour and then headed for the beach complaining that it was too cold...??? But admittedly the water is bloody icy in Blighty at the moment...it's been flat for the last 2 weeks, but nice'n'dry...the deck has had a good thrashing! Please understand me, I'm not anti-kooks (eggman will stick up for me here!), they know they're place, I'm anti the whole 'let's be surfers coz surf is cool' image. Unfortunately this has spread into snowboarding, longboarding (surf), and longskate. I realise that we are a 'family' but things are allready getting out of hand, and I've only been longskating for just over 2 years - surfing for well over 8 years! Longskating (and other board-sports) are slowly becomming a fashion statement... Beware!!!
I HAVE SPOKEN... FUZZ (DA HUI HONCHO) xxx

Just got back from a Limp Biskit video shoot at Skatelab today. My partner called me and told me we needed some skaters for the shoot and told me to get some. I called Gravity and they sent some of their best. Jeff Budro, Brad Edwards and Josh Connerly. These guys tore it up. They started with about 50 skaters, then Fred from Limp Biskit, who is a pretty good skater too, picked and chose the best. After the elimination there were about 8 left, Jeff and Brad were two of the 8. Hopefully they'll make it into the final video cut, it would be nice to see some longboarders on MTV. I shot a bunch of good video and will post some to my site in a couple of days.

That is a sad thing to hear. I am a long time devoted reader to Thrasher Mag and thought Curtis' last offering to the magazine was well worth reading. He wrote on what he loved and what he loved was skateboarding and concrete terrain combined. R.I.P. Curtis Hsiang.

SAD NEWS!
I was informed today that Curtis Hsiang a great all around skater and a better man passed away on 1-8-00 of a brain anurism. You may remember Curtis from the few articles he wrote for "Thrasher" magazine. He was also in photos skating vert in "Thrasher". Curtis skated downhill in the Berkeley hills with my buddies and I for many years. This guy could do it all. He skated, wrote articles, was a UC graduate and his death will be felt as a great loss to many in the skate industy!
We will miss you Curtis! Cliff Coleman
