Ohh yeah my crash storie, almost forgot...

About two weeks ago i met some friends downtown at one of the local pubs for a beer. After BS'in for a while i was talking about how latley i've had lots of time to skate and the weather has been nice, its all ive wanted to do, for the most part. but i never get the shuttle ride to the top.
feeling some pity or somethin my bros got all aggro about taking me to these hills that thy used to skate when they were kids( they don't skate any more. It was late after 11:45 or so and really dark no light s but the moon and front yard lamp posts along this hill. The hill itself was moderate, good for about 35-40 max but its was buuummmpy.
all straight exept for one turn in the center rated 20 mph front side for me. so i come into this corner at about thirty and grab no traction at all... as i began to eat stuff i figure maybe i could save with a coleman slide the other way, bigg mistake , twisted my ankle and got the cheesegrater good all up my elbow when my pad slip to my wrist, anlke is just limber enough now to skate again.
as odd as it sounds i think i kind of like goin down, it wouldn't be skatin without some road rash

I wrote a story about a pretty bad crash for an english class. Thought it might be of intrest here. It's about this waayyy kooky guy named todd, and goes on for 6 pages about skating in general and then about todd, then the crash.

I was bombing this hill up in my area known as Lakemont. The run is about 1.1 miles long with a fairly fast start. You first dip into this gradual lefty at about 30mph, then in goes into this huge drop then to a deadly sharp left at about 35mph. Then you go into about a 1/3 mile long strait away and you get up to about 50mph. Then it goes into an offbanked right hand huge sweeper that is about 1/3 mile long at about 45mph. Then you come out of that at about 55-60mph. Then into a easy right to the shut down area. Well I was coming into that sharp left at the top at about 40mph instead of 35mph and I was really smooth through it so my speed shot up to about 50mph. The board did this gnarly fish tail and threw me off the front of it. I slid on my back with my head facing down the hill, then i rolled on to my stomach about half way through the slide, it didnt feel like I was moving very fast but I was still going about 25mph and I SLAMMED into the curb. My friend in the car behind me said that I looked like a rag doll being thrown around. I slammed my hand into the curb really hard and possibly broke my thumb but I didn't go to the hospital or anything.

While at the Hanger Bowl yesterday I was haluing ass frontside through the deepend and did a LITTLE frontside 5-0 on the old pool coping. Come down aimed at the waterfall and my board just... i dunno. I kept goign and took a brutal hit to my shoulder and flipped up into the flat on my head. TGFH. Ouch. Ice......

I was coming home the other day and I was flying down this hill. I hit the one thing that pisses me off the most... A rock. So anyway my board got caught up and I went flying and hit the cement hella hard. I was bleeding from my arm and had a huge headache.

I was coming out of a nose manual (and just about had it to) when I figured out there was a drop then flat ground so I decided to try the drop. Bad idea I indoed and fell flat on my face. I was going pretty fast so my legs curled over and hit me in the back of my head. Knocked the wind out of me and I hurt my backbone. But nothing real serious.

My friend and I were riding on this road that's known by the riders in our area as The Devil's Backbone. We were going through this nasty 90 degree lefty. My friend made it through clean...he had it heelside. I had it toeside. I took a bad line and didn't lean into the turn enough. My board slid and recoiled, throughing me off on my back. I slid for about 5 ft then my body caught on the road and I went up on my shoulders and my momentum flipped me over and onto my feet. I was so amazed because I was able to walk the rest of it out backwards. I thought it was so cool until I noticed the pain in my wrist. I had scrapes on my back and arms and my shirt ripped on the colar pretty bad. I went to the Hospital thinking I had sprained my wrist, but ended up breaking off a piece of bone on the outside of my left hand and there were multiple fractures in the middle of the wrist and up the outside bone.

fell of my board yesterday afternoon. estimating 50 kilometers give or take 5 k's. went to cave some speed off after bombing a lttle of the hill i hit some damp road and all of a sudden my boards sideways and i've launched. had enough time to lift my head before hitting the ground. i skidded on my hands and ribs for 3 metres or so judging my boards distance from me but hard to tell as board flipped and rolled. couldnt breath when i stopped and i blacked out for a bit. bruised ribs extensive muscle damage to left hand lots of skin missing from knees knuckles hands elbow and a little from face. bruised right knee. i also ruined my shorts and gap jumper and board looks real ugly.

hey hodad,
patio has done a similar feat whilst snowboarding. launches off a big kicker, gets squirrely in the air, lands sideways on the rump. left cheek continues to the base lodge as the right cheek stays planted in the snow. hand down the back of the trousers to see if it's sweat or blood back there.
luckily patio was not split down the middle.

Yeah that kind of thing happens..h0dads seen a couple of such foot injuries, both of them totally like "oh my god my foot's come off" and thankfully such that the joints were able to be repaired (since they were dislocations). One foot belonged to a girl who crashes her pickup into a post (which fell across the highway with full-on sparks) then, somewhat dusted, she attempts to walk away..h0dad and friends carry her to a hotel office, where she touches up her makeup until the medics arrive.

Umm...gary...how did you snap your foot off? I hate that it may be three weeks, but I was just wondering so I don't make the mistake of being too distracted (especially since I ride avoid trucks from the local quarry).

Waiting for a car to go by, not payin' attention, I snapped my foot off the end of my leg. ER staff all came to check it out and hung around to hear me scream when they "reduced" (reset) it. Didn't make a peep.
Only three more weeks and I can take all my new titanium hardware out for a stroll, might be able to skate in a few months.
Moral of the story, "Always pay attention!"

Ever screwed up a coleman and dragged your butt such that one cheek is grabbed by the road while the other continues onward, while a cute guest watches? Ever taken the pain afterward, so as to pretend that all is good and that it aint no big thing, while walking up the hill afterward, with your cute guest?

Ok this crash wasnt using a longboard but using a MBS mountain board which is pretty much the same thing but for off road. So me and my friend made this jump off of his small hill (grass hill) and the only way that you could get speed for it was to be towed down his dirt driveway using a towrope tied to his go kart. Being towed you get going prob around 25 max but still and a very loose board its pretty intense. so anyways he was towing me behind totally not paying attention to me like usual and just gassed it the whole time. im going prob 20-25 when i near the jump and for more speed i yank on the rope and pull in about four feet of rope then i stupidly just dropped the rope down without throwing it and i was going good aimed right for the jump when the rope tangled in the rear wheel and freaking RIPPED the board out to the side(luke was still flying down the road on the kart) next thing i know im in a death roll going 20 and i almost totally CREAMED his little sister who was sitting to the right of the jump. i was totally ok but shaken up alot. it was pretty intense fall luke said cause he watched the whole thing :-)

I was riding in a small town in newyork(poughkeepsie)...The runs are great but way toolong after I start to push 40 for about 40 meters stamina starts to kick in considering my board 49'' Comet is heavy and I only weigh about 120 anyway I love carving So I have loose trucks being the young buck I am I don't wear pads... so one day as me and the guys were practicing drafting I lost control of the board then I remembered being on the pavement holding my ankle. been awhile now I still use flexall and stillhave a limp... Next time I go to Poughkeepsie I'm going to wear pads.

I got a cruel reminder that all pads aren't equal. Cheap pads protect against road rash but not against the impacts that usually cause the permanent damage. I've slammed my left knee several times wearing cheap in-line blading pads (and a few times without) and it is starting to show. The pain from last friday's impact at the skatepark and all the stories I've heard from older skaters makes me fear for the years (+50, I hope) I have to live with my current knees.

I was going over a hip a tad bit too slow. My rear truck hung up and I plunged forward hitting my cheaply protected left knee to the pavement. I didn't even hit very hard but obviously my knee hadn't healed completely from the previous one (read few posts below). Few hours later it had swollen to the size of a baseball (now, three days later, it has gone down to a tennis ball).

"Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone."

I just got back from a trip to my folks house, and went to my first vans park, and it really rocked!!
I took a few hard falls, and I'm really glad most of you guys push the gear...especially patio, his article helped to keep my priorities straight, before deciding to skate again (I'd been off for 12 years).
But, I noticed that all the little ones at the park don't learn from their falls (one kid just got his cast off the day before and still didn't want to wear wrist guards), because they think they look silly...
I wish some of them could have heard their peers wondering why the kids wanted to be so stupid and not wear their pads just so they could say they broke their arm.

hey Geoff,
you sound like you like to fall more than skate. if you want, come to my local skatepark and get in my way(like the other freeks that LIKE to have crash stories), and I'll slam you to the ground so hard, you'll need a shovel to scrape yourself offa the ground.
really.

I spent all day riding half pipes without crashing, and then pushed on flat concrete, tripped over my own feet and skinned my elbow and bruised my thigh. Always seems to happen like that.
