I was out for a simple, easy, relaxing skate with a buddy of mine. We were bombing a wide bike path hill and just as I reached the bottom I heard some commotion behind me. Recognizing the noise as the sound of human flesh hitting the pavement I brought my board to a stop and looked up the hill. What I witnessed brought tears of laughter to my eyes. My buddy wasn't going to fast, (just fast enough for some mild road rash) but the awkwardness of the fall sent his shoes rocketing off of his feet. I turned to see my buddy rolling into some bushes with shoes still airborn and white stockin'ed feet slashing through the bushes. I ran up the hill, half afraid he might be hurt, and half afraid of laughing upon arrival. However upon arriving I found my buddy walking out of the bushes with his pants around his ankles. The force of the fall had not only taken his shoes off, but also torn apart the fly and button of his pants. All in all it was quite humorous and after jimmy rigging his pants together with a key chain we bombed the hill once more.

lots of fun at reading those stories... and sometimes scared to death.

i had a "nice" crash a few weeks ago, going down a really long hill (estimated 4+km) on my landy r4. had randal dh with flywheels on it, so at my moderate speed i didnt experience wobbles at all. there were a few hairpin turns, all was going well, then the last 500m were in front of me, the steepest part of the hill. the last curve (to the left) was 30m ahead so i prepared for the slide. everything went well, i was entering the slide at about 40mph, beginning it smooth, then suddenly my wheels hooked back up to the 'crete and ZANG i flew to the outside of the curve. now the only thing that was hurt was an unbelievable tiny rash spot on my right foot. nothing else, and my helmet scratched from the chin to the ear section... guys wear your gear. although i was quite strongly shivering (probably due to the shock), i was still able to skate home.

My crashing story is about a torn MCL and ACL. Local skate park, looking for speed through the banks and finding it. Carve up to the coping, short slide, back down and start to head right back up with some body english and a hard carve when my back foot slips off the deck. My back leg folded up like a chicken wing while my front foot and board continued up the bank, my tail bone hit hard and I can stil hear the crunch of the knee. I torn my other ACL in '87 and knew what I'd done right away. Summer of '03 will not be a skating summer. I hate to sit on the sideline and watch a skating day go unridden. But there's more guitar time and time with the kids. Strangly my 2 and 4 year old boys are now more interested in skating and I'm limping to the park to let them roll around. Best wishes to everyone waiting to heal so they can skate again. I'll join you after surgery and rehab. I say it's stil safer than softball or basketball and I'm sticking to my story.

About two weeks ago I was in a mates house, and his house mate comes in with his longboard. He was just skating back from work, and the plate of his truck just cracked in two.
The guy came off, sure, and was fine, except emotionally: the board has been round the world with him, and he was sooo sad to get rid of those beautiful trucks

Hey, since there is already a "miko turn" on Tunnel, maybe we shouldd name this one too. howabout "the morons' turn"?

I think we could ride over the steel plate with bigger wheels... Want to trY?

David, hope the finger is not too painful.

Nice write up Miko.

Clayton - moron central

So there we were. Tunnel road! The awesome, long, beloved Berkeley run. Training ground for some of the fastest speedboarders living. Technical turns and speed at the top and fun carving corners for more casual racing your bros on the second half. And lots of traffic and construction.

We decided to drive up the scenic backside route up Claremont for pipe dreaming about riding it sometime in the future, and then swung around following Grizzly Peak to the top of Tunnel.

“Um guys, what do you say we drive down the hill to make sure there’s no new construction or obstacles, and so John here can get a preview of the hill?”

“Aw.... they usually mark any major stuff with signs or cones, so we’ll know what’s happening, I’m down to go!”

“OK. I’m good to go too.”

So there we were. S.F. regulars Clayton Scott and David Price, new rookie recruit John Kostoff, and myself. Ready to ride. Stoked! Clayton and David had just been on the road a couple days earlier, had it dialed, and didn’t think we’d have any surprises. John would get to drive and check out the hill, it was all good!

So David kicks in first, followed by Clayton, then me. I’ve only been there twice since being knocked out and breaking my ribs in a head-on with a Beamer last November, but I decide to hang in there and follow Clayton pretty closely.

Turn one… an awesome sweeping, banked right. Pick a good line and you gain speed. We all stick it and fly into the next couple sweepers, pulling us faster down the hill, tucking and flying, and here comes the second right… a few orange cones… no problem… a few more orange cones… still no problem… a SLOW sign? (Still no problem?) Clayton and David aren’t slowing down, I’m right on Clayton’s tail, we’re into the turn, feeling the pull of the G’s!!! What??? Construction workers?! Clayton’s jumping off his board and flying forward!!!

DAMN!!! A TWO-INCH-THICK METAL PLATE ACROSS A TRENCH!!!!

I’m ramming into it now and feel my board stopping. I know I can’t run 25mph, so I just lean forward and body surf onto my knee and elbow pads, and get my slider gloves on the ground, and slide around 10-15 feet without any skin touching the ground.

After jumping up and shaking it off I realize we’re all good. Not a scratch! I see David chasing his board and Clayton getting up and scrambling after his. Mexican road crew guys are running up asking if we’re ok and looking at us like the stupid morons we are. We were all in full pads and full-face helmets, so we got off pretty lucky.

I realize that after ALL the talk of major construction being marked, and then riding right past the orange cones, then past the SLOW sign, just how lame-brained we really are. And I have a good belly laugh right there, laughing at Clayton and David (and myself), the construction workers looking on in wonder.

So we continued down the hill (I’m still busting out laughing), and managed to not hit anything else. It was so hot (Thursday), traction was bad, and the road was slow. But hey! It was still pretty fun, and the crash into the 2” plate was somewhat amusing, if not embarrassing, so we’re all down for a few more runs.

On the second run, I drive so John can have a run, and first thing, a car jumps out on the side right in front of David after John and Clayton just get past. I scan down the hill to see what’s up with them, and there’s a delivery truck making a right turn, forcing them to turn up a side road.

Further down the hill there’s another pickup truck trying to back out of a driveway blocking the downhill lane, as well as two more trucks double-parked just beyond it, also filling the lane, with a car approaching in the uphill lane! Damn… this is turning out to be payday on Tunnel Road. Still no injuries, but we’re feeling like maybe there’s something not quite right with this particular session.

We take one more run, and I have fun chasing David to the bottom. Driving up from Santa Cruz seems a little silly for so little skating, but the road just isn’t feeling safe so we decide to bag it and go catch a few last runs at the Presidio.

There’s a simple lesson here. Drive UP THE HILL before riding down it! And if anyone in the car actually says to shine it on, DON’T LISTEN TO THEM! It’s easy to get lazy and just jump on and roll in the name of fun, but you really don’t know what’s around that next corner. We were lucky it was all a big laugh.

Driving up for the second or third run, we saw a tractor pull across the road, right at the steel plate! You couldn’t see the plate or the tractor when you entered the turn, so you’d hit it for sure if you were dumb enough to ignore the warning signs (and we WERE! Lucky for us there was no tractor!)

In the end, we were all still skate stoked, the Presidio was really fun, John got his first couple runs down the entire run on Tunnel without tanking and looking pretty good doing it. I realize we were pretty lame, but you know what they say… You can’t suck forever, and knowledge sometimes comes hand-in-hand with pain, so I think we might be learning here. I’m sure we’ll all be back to charge Tunnel another day. And of course… Not forget to start the session by driving UP THE HILL!

Gotta learn to stop/slow better...riding yesterday and felt too fast, tried to slow. Dunno what happened, but next thing I'm airborne. Monster road rash but luckily my new cell phone broke my fall...bummer

riding with cars towing you is not a good idea. my cousin did it crashed i think fractured his skull and obviously concussion. of course he did something else wrong by drinking a bottle of southern comfort first (i do not endorse skating under influence this post is against it). my other cousin did it on roller blades fell off at 70 kilometres and held on just out of shock. ruined his sponsorship which must hace been crushing even if he is a fruity booter.

Here's a little moral--listen to your body!

My pal Ken smacked his back shin hard skating a while ago--had trouble walking on it, etc. Went to a kook doctor, said looks okay, nothing detected on x-rays. A couple weeks later, said Ken goes to Vans Woodbridge all feenin for a sesh, pops an invert on the mini-pipe, comes down, lands solid, but I guess the G's were too much on the way down, and snnnnnaappp! Just like a wet branch, the back leg buckles at 90 degs, clean fracture across tibia and fibula. ouch! Rod and screw plates inserted. Rehab coming along.

BTW all y'all car humpers should do a search on "skitching"--folks gotten ran over doing that sh!t, or otherwise hurt bad--one I think was killed. Bad idea, peoples, esp. at higher speeds. Prob is when you let go and the wobs come in. Trust me, Christian Slater on the 'Vette in "Gleaming the Cube" --that was Hollywood effects.

The moral to the following crash story is DON'T BAIL OFF!
Me - 47yo moron surfer / skater,,,gear- 60inch FlexDeck Downhill Pro with Randal 180's, abec 7 bearings and ABEC 11 74mm Flywheels,,,hill - 1/4 mile sweeping downhill left 2+ lanes, newer and smooth blacktop,,,little traffic.
Perfect yes? Perfect setting for nice smooth quick bombing.
Facing downhill the left side drops more steeply than the right side. So,,,if you want bigger speed you carve over to the left,,,hug it until you reach the speed you want,,,and start carving right. This run was maybe the 4th on these Flywheels (75duro),,,and they are FAST! I settle over to the left,, point downhill figuring I'll go maybe 15 or 20 ft to pickup speed then breakout to the center. No cars in sight. All of a sudden this SUV comes speeding up the hill,,,closing too quick for me to jump to the other side.
So,,,I'm locked into the fastest part of the hills grade,,hugging the inside apex till he passes. I figure damn,,,I'll pick up too much speed but whatever,,the wheels and trucks are good for it. The JO in the SUV decides to slow down so his jug eared drollin kids can see the skateboarder. Now I'm locked into the fast line WAY too long. Randal 180's are supposed to speed wobble at about 35 or so I've read. I pass the SUV and realize that I'm packin major velocity but I'm confident. WRONG! Damn board starts to speed wobble. A VIOLENT WOBBLE! Throw my arms straight outboard,,trying to air brake and balance. Thought seriously about bailin. But I just read on this site that someone said if you can stay on the board it will straighten out. I rode it out!
I turn to look behind me and it goes into speed wobble #2!
RODE IT OUT AGAIN! My ridin partner seeing the 1st and 2nd knows I'm gonna bite it hard so jumps in the chase car and screams down the hill looking for debris. By this time I just made it throught speed wobble number 3!! The hill bends out of site she figures I'm in a tree,,,a pool or hedge somewhere. I made it!!! She sees me walking back up the hill toward them,,,I wasn't kickin the board because my legs were still shaken!! No matter how bad it wqobbles don't bail off!!!! EVER! Whoever posted that advice on this site,,,Dude I owe ya!

So I was at blomidon (a place in Nova Scotia, check the site www.nsboardco.tk, and I was sliding around the corner at about 35 maybe 40mph, all the sudden I hit a rock the size as a fist. WACK! im on the ground just like 'woody' i instantly get up and start laughing, then my buddy who was filming was like "Yo Scott look at your shirt." I had 3 shirts on, ripped through them all in different places. Bruised my shoulder bone, ripped the skin of left shoulder which left 2 scares and added on to huge road rash on my left hip
God road rash hurts a lot more then it looks!

so I was hangin' on the back of a car Back to the Future style up this hill and when I got to the top, I let go and got MAJOR speed wobbles that I couldn't control. I bailed onto raw asphault, tucked and rolled, bounced, then tucked and rolled again. Left a whole lotta skin on the pavement from my right hip, my knee, shoulders, ankle, back and hands. OWWWWWWEEEEEE. Just got my new board and now I have to sit and look at it until I'm not so freakin sore. RIDE ON, RIDE HARD

20mph, on a steep, fast, short hill, with a knarly curve at the top. this hill is sick. 1/3 of the way down i'm way too far out over my board on my carves, and my flywheels start snubbing. Speed starts to increase, and all of a sudden i slide on a heelside carve. wheels catch back and im thrown through the air (my buddy says i did half a flip), and now my elbow is complaining, besides that, all is good. nasty hill come with nasty bails.

I got up instantly and i started laughing cause it didnt hurt at the time. I hopped into the truck to catch up with my brother who had went before me. the instant i opened the door to let my brother in i was overwhelmed by a stinging pain. now im infected and i have to take anitbiotics cause i suck at treating my wounds.

I've bought a bevy of safety gear for the parks. I was "only" wearing a helmet because I was "only" rolling in my basement, feeling a new set of bearings.
I was doing a 360 manual slowly around the floor. My wheels skidded out and BAM! right on to my knee hip and wrist. Damn near broke my wrist, with my wristguards only 10 feet from me.
I feel incredibly stupid.
Try to wear all of your pads, every moment you are on a board. It matters.
