first time down this hill, deceiving slope so i go from the top. in the end speed not my problem... from the top everything is great. carving between lanes, between yellow reflectors in center so thats what i look for. as i crest the hill going mmm bout 15 two reflectors are missing. i see the divets they sit in but too late, i dodge one except one rear wheel. gives me the SLIGHTEST wobble. dont think much of it...unfortunately i continued riding but as the hill progressed wobble picks up violently. now riding a teeter totter. the last thought that went through my mind was im doomed and decided that the grass was softer than the pavement. but i didnt make it there. so i spent the next three days between two hospitals (one of which highly overmedicated me, resulting in coma!?!?) and i now ride with my new best friend helmet. too bad some of my old favorite hills will never be the same... my mind plays tricks on me. i hope no one has to overcome thee mind!

My friend died yesterday. He was on an easy street, skitching behind a car, got speed wobbles and fell on his head. It can happen anytime, anywhere, from a downhill race, to simply cruising home on the local roads. It can happen to your best friend or even you. Don't skitch. Wear a helmet.

yeah, so skating yesterday i fell pretty f#@!in hard. me and olin were sliding this rode we call switchbacks and i was in only gym shorts as clothes (and no helmet) but gloves of course. i was taking a right turn, but came in really hot, so i was gonna pendulum and then come out regular and take the turn. i brought the slide across and as a goofy foor, expected to roll to the left, but didnt enuf and saw that i was goin off the road to the right. as soon as i knew i was falling i saw a metal pole in my path and my life flashed before my eyes. if my head had hit that pole (inches) i would not be here typing this because i would be dead. no room for recovery, dead. maybe with a helmet i could have been recovered, but i was going about 35-40 or so, and it would have been the first thing i hit. instead i just barely missed it and shot thru a gap and then hit a different part of the road, prob 20 ft from where i fell originally. my back has road rash (a lot) and i think my right wrist is broken, but im just very happy to be alive. goin to the hospital in a min. wish me luck. o, i will ALWAYS wear a helmet now.

One day I was bombing this narrow bike trail by the American River in Fair Oaks, CA. I was just wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I had my helmet on, as well as some gloves, not exactly sliders. So I'm bombin this hill, just fine w/ no probs, till the end. At the end, the trail leaks into a parking lot, and thats how you slow down, cuz its probably around 35mph. Well, they had cut into the road to lay some pipe, and I was forced to attempt to run out 35mph. Now, we all know that that's impossible, so I ate it, rashed up my side, back, both elbows, both kness, went through my Vans and cut my feet, but luckily the gloves saved the hands. Moral of the story: ALWAYS CHECK YOUR RUNS!!!

Glad to hear Phil is feeling better, and umm... getting some good strokes from the girls!
Today's latest mishap: Bonny Doon
Me and Steven Wu are working together on a couple runs, riding a bit slower than full-tuck, trying to play with the draft and just work on technique. The hill's still plenty fast, and we're topping out around 50. At the bottom, there's a pitch that steepens and goes into a left sweeper, and beyond that is the shutdown. The drop through the sweeper is one of the fastest sections, and I notice myself dropping a lot faster than Steve, realizing that he's standing, not tucked or down... but it was too late, and his line was closing off the inside with our boards overlapped. I finally reached out hoping to maybe grab him and stabilize us both but our wheels hooked and we were pitched down the road and into the bushes going about 50! I flipped onto my back sliding, and he was on sliding on his side and back.
In the end we were lying there tangled, and realized neither of us was injured, so it was pretty much a laughfest, but BOY WERE WE LUCKY! Leathers totally saved us... and I'm SURE falling anywhere near that speed without them would have us paying a visit to the skin graft ward at the hospital. Steven picked up a few nettles. Damn... what a rush. We both continued to take runs after that as well. I'm a little stiff in a couple spots, but yeeeeehhhaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww!!!!! We're OK! Bring on the leathers, helmets, slide gloves... whatever. I'm happy to wear that stuff!

Yeah, Philip is getting lots of attention from the Vancouver CLBC girls...they keep bringing him ice cream and 'baked goods' since his lungs are off limits for awhile (wink wink). Miko, it surely was a bad day, but as Kludy said, every ONE of the forty or so people who were standing there got a sobering reality check. Riding down big hills on fast boards is a dangerous pastime...My experience with motorcycles, aircraft and guns tells me that it is okay to play, but when you think you got it all dialed, and forget the danger is there, BAD things happen.
I hate that Phil got hurt, but if we didn't learn from it, it WOULD be for nothing. We could take a lesson from aviation...for years now, Flying Magazine has published monthly HONEST ACCURATE accident reports (Skydiving mags do this, too)...there have been a few times when reading them that I've broken out in a cold sweat and said "Holy Crap...I did that same thing once!"
That's what these stories are for.
Good luck at Mary Hills...hug my Canadian Brothers, and if you have to puke, use Bricin's helmet.
On the subject of no knee pads...my worst fall yet was because I got in too much of a hurry to take my boots off and slide on the pads...I ran out of road, ate it on gravel, and thrashed both knees. I was lucky I didn't break a knee cap, bad as the rash was, it was not TOO costly a lesson. Haven't ridden without them since.

Damn... I've ridden this short-but-sweet hill many, many times. It's about 1/2 mile long, repaved recently, and has a couple sweeper turns leading to a 90 deg left with a stop sign intersection. We fly through the left, run the stop, then crank hard to turn right into a side street. If you bomb the hill and tuck, you go near 40, and if you don't scrub a lot, the pitch keeps you going about 30-35, and you slide that left pretty hard and immediately have to set up for the right.
Today on the last run, I passed my buddy and swept towards the left, cranking hard into and saw, just around the corner, right in my path, a stopped garbage truck, and realized it completely blocked my view of any oncoming traffic, so instead of just going straight, I foolishly followed my line right, then cranked quickly across the oncoming lane and into a driveway thinking I had shed enough speed with my quick foot dab on the left... no go, I *almost* stayed up, but right at the end my knees buckled and down I went onto my slide gloves and elbow pads... my mistake was NOT wearing knee pads and I ended up with torn jeans and two bloodied knees.
This is the first crash I've had in a long time, and I was totally adrenalized, and... it was about 15 minutes before my shift at Trader Joes... so I drove there, cleaned up, dressed my knees (first aid kit! yay!!!) and worked... sheeeiiiittttt... Fun session though! SGS heaven on that hill! I'll be back there tomorrow with knee pads ON.

Jakes Rash Injuries

Hi David,
As far as I know, the total carnage for Jakes Rash that day was:
Broken thumb Dislocated shoulder Broken Ankle Broken ribs and punctured lung
The last one was the most severe, and Philip (the injured rider) was taken to the local hospital in Sechelt...he was readmitted three days after he got back to Vancouver, the lung had collapsed.
I was pretty shook up that we had all that carnage in about thirty minutes...I had never been to a LB race before. The good news was that Bricin Lyons, the organizer, called the race off after Philip got hurt. We agonized for several days over Philip's injury...he came into and past the braking zone, attempted a slide, hooked up, and rode into a parked SUV at about 20mph. BAD SCENE.
Anyway, after we had all blamed ourselves for it, he posted up at CLBC and said, "Nobody's fault, I rode into a car, DUH!"
So much of what we do these days is shaped by our fear of lawsuits and other nastiness...small wonder that businesses frown on people skating their property. The Jakes Rash Outlaw Race gets bigger everytime, and unless we can hay bale the whole run, I can't think of a way to make it safer. And as you know, that would be A LOT OF HAY! Some smokin' road, tho...it'll be a shame when they build houses all over it and we can't skate it anymore. I was thinking it would be great if longboarders bought every lot on it...then we could put a sign at the bottom that says "SKATEBOARDERS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY" or "KEEP YOUR DAMNED CAR OFF MY HILL!!""
By the way, those aren't boulders...we call them ROCK BALES.
But was THAT a great weekend, or WHAT?!?! Stoked for next year already!

this one scared me good...so i was racing the jakes rash outalw race at danger bay IV 2 weekends ago. this road was deently fast, i think we were pushing close to 50 that day with a tailwind....if you don't know this road...on both sides of the road is a ditch with nice large rocks and water in it. of course, being a outlaw race, they had no hay bales. 44 riders, we ran 4 heats of 11, with staggered starts. my 2nd heat, me and like 3 other riders i don't know were in a tight pack, me and another guy came very close, i was in full tuck passing him on the outside. i dont know what happened but i went from my tuck to a full stomach slide for a good 100 ft or so to the edge of the road without going into the ditch. lucky the leathers took all the damage. as soon as I stop i look behind me only to see a rider trying to pendulum slide to not run into me. it did'nt work and he slide into my back at full speed, and we both fell into the ditch. i think we both came out pretty spun, he messed his thumb up, another rider who was in the pack went into the ditch f#$ked his ankle up pretty good, dunno if it was sprained or broken but it was f#@!ed. that is my crashing story. it scaried me good. outlaw race+11 man heats+tailwinds+jagged rocks=gnar

Point Reyes Light - June 2, 2005
Bolinas man dies in skateboard accident
By Jacob Resneck
A Bolinas man died of severe head injuries after falling from his skateboard in downtown Bolinas Friday afternoon. Friends said Sage McCollum, 28, was heading down Park Road while riding a longboard-style skateboard. A pickup truck, which was driving up the road, reportedly pulled to the side as it saw McCollum skating down the hill.
The Highway Patrol said that at 5:45 p.m. McCollum, in an attempt to maneuver around the stopped truck, lost control and tumbled off his skateboard. First on the scene, Bolinas firefighters packaged the fallen boarder in a stretcher and waited for a county fire department ambulance from Point Reyes Station to transport him to a safe helicopter landing zone.
"There wasn’t a lot we could do for him on scene," Bolinas Fire Chief Anita Tyrell-Brown told The Light. "He was alive but it was quite obvious that he had severe brain trauma – he was never conscious."
County firefighters drove McCollum to the Bolinas firehouse where a rescue helicopter picked him up, flying him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. McCollum died at the hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
"It was nobody’s fault, everybody was where they should be, there just isn’t much room [on the narrow street,]" Mimi Calpestri, McCollum’s grandmother, told The Light. "There was no daring involved. It was just one of those things. A lot of young men do what he did."
Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bonanno, who is investigating the crash, told The Light Wednesday he believes that McCollum never struck the truck nor was the driver at fault.
"It’s not definitive, but it’s looking like there was no contact with the vehicle," he said, adding that the CHP would most likely not cite anyone involved in the incident.

All I have to say is to wear knee pads as well as your normal gear. I pulled an diot stunt by grabbing on the back of my brothers car to get back to my house(he knew that I was going to). That was a mistake. I wore my helmet and my normal clothes (Jeans and sutch). He turned like normal, slowed nown, and I got a case of the wobbles and went knees all into the road. I now have some frest asphaut in my knee, as well as a huge, painful roadrash spot on my knee. You dont want this to happen to you. So wear all of your gear. I didnt and now I have to pay.

one time i was skating down my friends driveway on one of my old school banana boards and i dedided to bomb his hill. this was way before i had slide gloves, so i guess i was hoping to have good luck. the first half was great until the asphalt began to get worse and there were cracks everywhere. i made it to the bottom and i didnt see this huge crack. i ended up hitting the crack, face planting, breaking my nose, ripping off the left side of my face and knocking a couple of my teeth loose. now that i look back at this incident i can only laugh and remember to learn from my mistakes...

I was having work done on my truck 3 days ago and got the call at my house to come and pick it up.My wife could not take me so I decided to skate with my speedboard. There are a few small hills going to the shop, one steep hill short cut.I left the house with shorts on and as I was leaving i thought to go back and get my slidegloves, decided no its just crusing down a few hills.I bypassed the steep short cut hill just to feel the wind at my face.1st hill was a ball smooth as silk.Made the right by the AM Pm store where I was just going to ride the side walk.I could not beleave it, this hill is a main small twon street that allways has cars on it.Not that day, so I just skated the whole thing sise to side.Remimber that steep hill short cut, well it had a light and turned red on me and a car, just one car was pulling out.I was having so much fun i decided to hook that right up the hill.As soon as I made that turn the road when all bad and I came off.I did what I always do put my slidegloves and leathers to work and laugh about it the only thing was I did not have them.My rigth hand is gone, left hand not as bad, my tum tum and leg in road kill.I have not done that in 20 years and I hope that it will not happen for 20 more years. I LOVE MY SLIDE GLOVES!
