Luge crashes with car (video)
On 10/17/2011 Graham Montanari wrote in from South Africa  (41.162.nnn.nnn)

At an event in Durban, South Africa, a luge hit a car on a road that was supposed to be closed off by race organizers (Zoo York) after being let through by a Zoo York marshal and the South African Police Force. This incompetence endangered the life of the rider and just proves how important it is that we compete under the right associations in controlled environments.
The rider is fine and is recovering with a dislocated shoulder, concussion and some serious roasties

almost crashing into a telephone pole
On 9/28/2011 Anthony wrote in from United States  (24.38.nnn.nnn)

me and my boy pat went from mastic beach new york to manorville all on boards. about and hour and ten minutes. we get to this kids house and then we head to route 111 to go to the shrine or more localy called country point. it might not be as crazy as other places but its pretty bad ass for over here. we get there and the kid we met up with tells us about the biggest hill there. so i do it first and it was crazy. then i went halfway up it cuz it drops after the first part. i make it out fine. on the way out we hit a nice line that starts to get a little crazy. that kid pat almost hits a pbc fence and i bailed to the left of the exit. then i go out the exit and theres a road going to the left and right and i was going top fast to make the turn but i seen a bush and a telephone pole. i miss the pole, dve into the bush and scratch my tattoo wich is 6 days old. it wasent bad but it was m first.

Crashing
On 3/25/2009 Max Capps wrote in from United States  (68.5.nnn.nnn)

Rick, learn to put a hand down thru turns, and have the other in the air, then you snake the inside line, and if the little f#@!ers get to close, stiff arm them out of the way, because badass captain america is coming through.

And that, is how you take down little speed demons who have not had the experience of crashing yet, and now they will learn how to race better and smarter so that everyone makes it out ok later.

Crashes thru the years
On 3/25/2009 Kludy wrote in from United States  (68.8.nnn.nnn)

My additude has always been that if I was to choose between hurting another rider that crached and myself I would take myself out.
This last crash was one of the worst that I have takin and it was because the road was blocked. Have to rethink that from here on out because I cant keep taking hits like that. Would love to see if I was right and had no where else to go but into the downed rider. Some one has it on film!
The thing is that now adays all the riders are young and kind of new to the sport and dont know how to give the other rider room and they do fall, alot.
So I was thinking that I cant just keep crashing just to miss someone that fell but if I hit they I could hurt them and I would still crash. Ether way I have become a slow rider now and stuff is going to go down infront of me.
Any help on this, I would like because your never to old to learn and I need some help with this.
Thinking that is I could slide , maybe I could get out of crashing myself out and hitting another rider. Times have changed and I need to change with it.
Some one please give me some insite and not ( Just stop you old s#@! )!
I do want to keep racen here in Cali. we started a killer race series thats fun and cheap for me to go to but cant keep crashing.
1st race was Barret and I only went down one time and cracked a Rib. Race two was Dannys and I just broke the same Rib that was already cracked and the pain every sitting here days later with pain pills is unreal and I hate pain pills!
So help a old rider out and share what may help me in races.
The next race will be for me is the dump road and its fast, lots of new riders charging diving in hard where maybe I will be.
Helppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp :)

Danny Outlaw race
On 3/24/2009 Kludy wrote in from United States  (68.8.nnn.nnn)

Went to Dannys race with my son just to chill and get some runs in on the hill.
It all fell apart before we started out.
I woke up real late, never in 10 years of racen did that. Get half way and the truck over heats. Get there as everyone is leaving for the hill and felt like they all where waiting for us. get to the hill walk up and have a easy fun mellow run.
walked up agin and as I get to the top two trucks full of riders showed up, all I had to do was wait. Had this run with a group of riders and I locked in on a faster rider and having a blast with David Price. Get to the point where I just want to chill and make the hard left drop knee. All ways did that type of turn stink bug, did it just the year before and now wanted to be a little more racey in left turns.
As I am letting riders pass me standing up air breaking I think a few riders fell and one was in the middle of the road and was not moving.
I decided that instead of hitting him that I would ride it out thru the garvel and hit that soft sand that I remimmbered last year. Could not be any more wrong than I saw. Can remmimber what happened because it happened so fast but I was standing up air braking and hit a mound of dirt and from there I went air born hit hard on I think was another mound of dirt and rag dolled for a bit. When I stopped I copuld not beleave I was not hurt.
Did need up that night going to the E.R. ( Broke a rib ) thats it ! Ha !1

I crashed
On 11/3/2008 Kludy wrote in from United States  (68.8.nnn.nnn)

In the last few years I have been to a few races but have not road my board all that much. Started riding again at the beining of last month and am into it again.I would work on my board for hours in years past but have not at all untill last week because my bearing where toast so I had to. I hooked my board up and did like always and would spin my wheels every night. I get to the hill this past Saturday afternoon and set my tent up and my freinds got there just before dark to make a run or two. I have done this two times already last month and wanted to test some different wheels. From the top was a blast, I was stiff so could not totally go for it at the top and near the bottom I was losing my legs but the wheels rocked. Got thru. the whole run and was thinking to myself that these wheels rock when slam, I whent down hard. as I was going to the ground I see a wheel, then a bearing, then three. My back truck came apart. I was running flooting axles and even the axle blow out. May have broke my figure, foresure reinjured and shoulder but that trill was great and I still road all weekend. The next morning, O by the way I found my last wheel just before dark ! I made coffee and we where looking at my board when Dave by hand unscrewed the from truck nuts and they just fell to the ground. I am so lucky that I have great freinds to help me get my thinking of setting my board up again and that they had everything needed to do it. OMG , thats the same board and set up I had last year at Teutonia !!!!!1 If my front truck had come apart , not sure if I would have walk away! Stoked to be riding again and even more stoked that my luck in still hanging with me after all these years. Funny but I hurt a little on my figure but nothing esle untill this morrning trying to take a shower, late for work with the time change. Could barely move my shoulder all day. Just love how high I get when so focased on riding that the pain never shows up untill the next day. Love our sport and hope its a year or more before I post here again, Ha ! Stand - Up Rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I was at a local skatepark and they have all the obstacles there. hips, gaps, stairs... you name it. the ramps all have metal pieces at the bottom so it's easier to ride on. i was hitting the hip and when i bailed, my hand was cut in a straight line about 10 cm long and was bleeding like crazy. i was very lucky because it wasn't that far above where my veins were. it's about 7 month's later and the mark is still there.

Big guys dont bounce!
On 2/8/2008 munchh wrote in from United Kingdom  (86.149.nnn.nnn)

Dude have you never noticed on the home page it says....

"The Web's #1 Longboard Site!"

dont be daft!

Thought i'd share this although it was last summer....

Racing at the 'Bish Bash' i slid the back out and didn't bounce!

Looked at my hand to see my little finger bent round the back of my hand pointing up my arm...

Busted finger, down to the hospital, came back and sat the rest of the day out, but did the timing and used my x-ray envolope to write the times on

Then drove everyone home, it wasn't until the next day i realised i had 2 busted ribs, godam thats the worst, you cant laugh, cough or breath too hard.

The only thing that might have saved me was one of those 'armour' jackets,

but it was a good day.

PS. Slipa dood, how do you end up with only Tumeric and Brandy in the house man? hehe

On 1/18/2008 kkay wrote in from (121.45.nnn.nnn)

it was my birthday recently and for my birthday i got a brand new layback cruiser, so i decided to go for a ride. There was a hill near the place i was staying, it was a very slight decline so i thought ide be fine with it. So I'm carving down this hill when i start gaining a lot of speed. I'm speeding up, going faster and faster when the speed wobbles set in. I started to freak out and didn't know what to do, i was going about 40 k's an hour and these wobbles were getting terrible. I decided to jump off the board and take my chances running, so i jump off but as im jumping, my back foot catches on the front of the board and i slip out while on the board with one foot.

well i got some bad cuts and grazes on my elbow, wrist and hand on my right side, and my left leg got a huge big road rash on the upper thigh and a big graze on my ankle.

You'd think ide learn my lesson but yesterday i was riding my skateboard on the way back from the shops and i spot this big hill, steep and long. My first instinct was to walk down but as im walking i think, this hill isnt so steep, i could take it if i curve a lot. So i take off, swerving loads and doin ok when i realize the angles of my curves are reducing, im gaining loads of speed and getting wobbles so i take some advice ide recently been given and head for the curb. There was a driveway nearby and it had a bump at the edge. The landing looked grassy and i thought ide be alright, going pretty damn fast.

I hit the driveway, go over the bump, fall back, realize the grass was only in a small section and the rest of it is gravel. Im flyin through the year and take a step to see if i can run outa this, well that doesnt work, i take on step and do a front flip. Im sliding on my back and get a bunch of big cuts on my left leg. Other than that i was fine cause i landed on my back which had a backpack on it.

i realize from reading a lot of these stories that i got off incredibly easy, and im gonna be a lot more responsible from now

Crash and burn
On 11/30/2007 Newburgh longboarder wrote in from United States  (165.139.nnn.nnn)

Ok, so me and my best friend are out crusin thru Newburgh, when we happen upon a hellacious hill that we had never hit. I'm the dumb one, so I took off first with alex behind me. I get up to around 30-40, and I notice that I'm headed right at the river and the big-a** sharp rocks on the shore. So I tried to whip it over into a driveway, slide out, slam my head into pavement, slide, flip, and bounce for about 20 feet. I was out for ten minutes at least and the whole time, Alex is laughing his a** off at me. I ended up getting road rash up my back, up my arms, and getting a nice egg on my head. Moral of this story, wear a helmet and don't bomb hills you don't know anything about.

Slalom crash
On 10/20/2007 Louis wrote in from United Kingdom  (194.106.nnn.nnn)

A few days ago i took a nice fall off my slalom board doing a tight flat land course. I wasnt wearing any pads. Thankfully I didn't get badly injured but this is a warning to wear heavy weight tshirts when skating because the old light weight tshirt i was wearing literally disintegrated when i hit the ground causing me to get a nice road rash as i slid bare skin along the tarmac. Even on a flat land slalom course you can still get enough speed to hurt yourself. I hardly got it bad, but any injury is worse than none.
By the way, as i had nothing else to hand other than a couple of anti septic wipes, i used those and then applied a paste made from a mixture of Turmeric powder (indian cooking spice) and brandy. It hurts like nothing else but the turmeric really helps to speed up the healing process. Just a tip when you have nothing else.

I told my girl friend to drive to the bottom and wait for me. I pulled out the board without giving it another thought and jumped on no helmet sandals t shirt and shorts. Im 41 and havent been on a board in 25 years. Well 20 seconds into it I realize Im an idiot. i bet I was doing 30-35 when I got the speed wobbles. It through me off and I hit my head disslocated my shoulder and got road rash on both legs both hips lt shoulder and both butt cheeks. Im lucky to be alive. Everyone please wear a helmet when bombing these hills

tackling parked trucks and blind corners

went out randomly scouting hills with some friends found a long smooth freshly repaved hill in a slow residential hood i decided to pioneer this run and took off slow but quickly picked up speed as i hit the bottom of the hill i tried to skate around the right hand turn close to the inside as i came around the corner someone comes tearin out of a side alley through a stop sign head on at me forcing me to bail and try and run it out at easily 15 20mph i did run it out but it was straight into the side of a brand new truck at a full run i seriously bruised up my left hip and shoulder and the top of my ??right elbow??go figure but i crashed hard enough that the cars owner came out of his house to see wat happened and my friends heard the impact around the corner and like 500yards uphill i didnt even get the guys car dirty and surprisingly quickly considering i was still in shock and lightheaded for the next 20 minutes came up with a cover story for the crash but i split my elbow deep allmost all the way to the bone severed some muscles and had a gash deep enough my friend was alble to take an oversized iodined qtip and insert it all the way into my elbow wound while cleaning it probally should have gotten stitches that day especially while looking at the scar today butinstead i wentout and skated a very long rough and hilly local park luckily i was allready dosed up on painkillers from a concert the day before which i think kept me loose and relaxed for when i tackeld the truck not too painfull of a crash but really stupid and really funny and a really mean lookin battle wound could have been MUCH WORSE so allways have a spotter at the end of a hill especially with a blind corner

On 6/3/2007 roman wrote in from United States  (24.19.nnn.nnn)

Yesterday me and some friends went to a beautiful park in Seattle Washington called Discovery Park I'm not fimiliar with the area and i'm pretty new to longboarding. We we're walking like .5 miles to the beach down a steep, long declining road. I mean Really steep and twisty. I was carrying my longboard, but no way in hell was i gonna crave a steep ass, neverending, turning road. We came to a clearing in the road where i could see atleast 200yds out in front of me and it was a slight decline, but perfect to carve! so i hopped on my board was carving on the street when i noticed i had picked quite some speed on this straitaway. probably 20mps just then i saw an unexpexted corner when the street turned again so i decided not to jump off and ride it since the road would probably straiten out and i could slow down. (btw i'd be an idiot to jump going 20mps) Bad idea i went around the corner and the road just dropped insanely down, i wasn't confident cuz i wasn't expecting it i was prolly going about 35 when i hit the next set of corners and another strait down hill. I was doubting myself and got the speed wobbles of death... there where about 10 bikers/hikers watching me try to balance like an idiot in nothing but shorts and a sleeveless shirt, no helment either. When i read a sign that said warning, be prepared to stop, i bit it. Right after i dont remember how i fell but i remember flipping, rolling and sliding on my leg. Everyone froze and just stared at me i jumped up and said something stupid and walked to my board. s#@! i tweaked my shoulder so bad i can bairly type this. It's either a hyperextention or a torn ligament. Hurts like a mother. 2nd degree road rash on 9inches of my leg. Red elbows, hips, shoulder, and my left hand has barely any skin left on it, it took it off so clean that it looks like a burn. Then i spent the rest of the day in a parking lot as my laughing friends poured hydrogen porixide on my wounds. I was lucky not to hit me head at all and no broken bones. Moral of the story? Don't ride a street that you don't know!

not even downhill...
On 5/27/2007 idiot wrote in from United States  (72.208.nnn.nnn)

ok, i was being stupid, and i decided, hey lets go and get my dog and longboard with her. So, i was getting out of the driveway, (yes, i wasnt even going downhill.) and my dog, with leash in my hand wrapped around my wrist, saw another dog, and bolted down the sidewalk. I was lucky, and happened to have a huge pile of tree clippings and such, and completely flew. My dog, wanting to catch up witht he other one, kept running, and dragged my a few yards. I got up, pissed off and embarrassed, cuz there were people on the other side of the road staring at me, and just limped home. I didnt even look at my knee until i was halfway up the driveway, and it was bleeding heavily. This was my first crash ever (it was maybe a week after i bought it) and im A LOT safer around it.

both knees, both elbows, and a concussion
On 5/26/2007 Will wrote in from United States  (71.200.nnn.nnn)

hey, speed wobble is deadly. I should know because ive been long boarding for 5 years. Well, a couple days ago, i was bombing down this awesome hill. the only problem was i had skitched a bike cranking at about 20 mph on a long driveway next to the very top of the hill, and by the time i was on the hill, i was going faster than 40 mph[twice as fast as i usually go]. halfway down the hill, i got major speed wobble i had no luck trying to slide. i knew i was gonna bail terribly... i wobble out of control and flipped, rolled, and slid more than 50 feet. i scraped up everything, and got a minor head concussion. heres the bad part.. i cant kneel down so i can really long board for a while...WEAR YOUR HELMET AND PADS!!!!

About two days ago me and a couple of homies decided to go long boarding...so one of my homies knew this sweet! down hill, no gravel nice open pavement surrounded by trees...where we could ride and chillax!...so we did...since I had been off from being grounded and had also "note- I had not a lot of experience down hill "ripping"...I wasn't the only one, so did my other two homies..except for the the other homie who brought us to this anonymous location, who had invited his "Heyna"(Spanish slang) girl for the ride...so we got their and it was quite dark..around 10 p.m.. well we start rolling down this steep..hill which felt like a roller coaster as we rode down...catching speeds from 15mph-25mph...not bad, so as we rode two of my homies had gone ahead of me cuz I was too slow for some reason...and the other fool with his girl were out in back,...off quite bit from each other...so I rode holding on mine mini flash light feeling the cool wind in my hair..then suddenly..I started catching speed down hill...then I became concerned about the speed cuz I started to Death wobble man I swear I tried to balance myself but it was to late when I came up short of balance on a turn...man did I "Beefed it"..I landed left foot first..then..left shoulder and then my pretty face..then I lost it I just kept going for about 10 ft..I was a ligit face skater...I felt like I had done a summer sault..back flip..face sliding, torso spinning damm...I swear! I had in printed the left side of my face on the concrete....As if the concrete was a Stencil spray canned by dark blood red...well after that land I was unconscious for about a minute or less, which seem pretty quick in the moment...I got up and got back on the board fine...mmmyyyy a** what in Idiot!!...I rode till I caught up with my homies...as I rode...It was too late I was speeding again and I didn't get a ahead check to see my homies faces as I passed them, but I did get a glimpse of one their flash lights...so I immediately jumped of the board cuz I was wobbleling again and headed straight in to a gate...so I jumped off wuuhh! landed all right..so I walked up hill feeling nauseas and when I got their my two homies "beefed it" too but not as bad as I, they landed on grass ok with some gravel...but they had no problem staying up or awake just some scratches..however I was f'd-up badly loosing my vision and feeling weak...a few seconds later my other homie comes down hill with his girl (walking)...so he asks if we was all right nope...man did I need medical attention...the homie and his girl freaked out about my face and how I was limping....and one of the homies who "beefed it" too rushed me to a hospital...as for the rest of the other homies they where their by my side at the Hospital...I then later left the hospital around 3:00 a.m with one huge face abrasion on the left side and a small one around my left shoulder, with a some scratches around my legs and a sad mom..man was I one lucky homie...why? cuz I had no helmet and padding...lost some hair but still here, thankful too be alive... for the next time I'll be more cautious..use a helmet don't ride at night alone...ride in groups and ride up hills first not downhill on new locations...learn from this "menso'"(Idiot)...what a night!
