Ive hit fast speeds also very fast off of the hills in my area, and im only 14! Ive had my share of bails and have pulled some bad ones that have given me some bad pain, my adivce to any hill bomber is to bomb with the traffic, dont over turn, and if you bail do a pencil roll down the hill

I had a strange thought this past weekend. I was carving down a very nice curvy hill and during one of my turns I came about 10 feet from hitting a black explorer. I am guessing he was going about 35 miles, and I was going 37 miles an hour (thats what my friends speedometer said). It was an exhilirating feeling, to say the least, but my friend was scared shitless by it. In my mind, I know bombing hills that if I fall, I will SERIOUSLY screw myself up. I just figure I suffer extreme pain, possibly die, etc. maybe these consequences will set in later. I was just wondering though, what is the best way to fall? The one bad fall I've had when I was 13, I naively tried to run off the board, tripped, and landed on my chest. My friend was trying to tell me the best thing to do is tuck and roll, so that I would land on my back. I'm not so sure about tucking and rolling, that seems really sketch, especially at 30mph+. what about just landing on your ass, I wonder? anybody have any advice? it might save a life...

ive only been riding for about a year now and up to last week no serious injuries i was going down this hill not too fast bout 15 miles an hour and this yo boy in his ride thought it would be funny to knock me off my board so he drives up on my butt and i bailed into a front yard and half of me landed in the yard and my other half hit the cement luckly i got off with a nice bruise on my right side but the funny part and the part that pissed me off the most was the kid got caught at a red light so i pushed my self as fast as i could and caught his ass and i broke his driver side window with my board but in the same time i snapped my board on his door post. but you should have seen his face it was so funny he had this big stupid look on his face. i didnt hurt the kid but i think his pride was a bit hurt when he tells his yo boy friends a skater kid broke his window, but on the other hand the other part of my board is in his car. Dont ever come to nebraska it sucks to ride here its mostly flat and it snows so you can only ride 6 months out of the year. bottom line im gonna be like the beverly hillbillys cause cali is the place i wanna be so im gonna pack my stuff and move to beverly..hills that is..lol. yall keep it fast and bomb some kick ass hills for me....

I live in downtown Denver, and my primary mode of transportation is a 48.5 Sector Nine Zepplin. The other day I'm riding to work at rush hour, hit the walk signal at Broadway, and my skating foot makes contact with the right rear wheel, sending me supermanning into the middle of the crosswalk. There are folks all around, and the Sector9 goes shooting off behind me like a friggin rocket. I've got roadrashed hands and knees, and my nice work clothes are now ruined and I'm late for work. Some dude grabs my board and I walk my sorry ass to the office hurting. Talk about pure embarrassment.

today a bunch of friends and i rented some mountain boards and hit the hills. we were baja'in most of the day through a field on a folf course. most of the stuff was pretty tame which was good because we were all mostly beginner mountain boarders/intermediat skaters. well, my first big crash came when a few of us were trying to bomb down a hill and then go across a road and catch some air off a ledge down onto another hill. my friend pablo was gettin some good air and stuck most of his landings, crashed a few but nothin that awful. i got two good runs in before my third. then i tried to go for too much air and burried the nose of the board into the knee high grass. i was thrown forward and landed squarely on my right shoulder. after my shoulder hit, my head whipped into the ground. good thing i was wearing the helmet. stiff neck and all, i got up and hit the jump a few more times just fine. we had to go after that, so pablo and i decided to ride down the dirt road until the bottom. friends would lead and follow us in cars. the truck in front was videotaping us, and both pablo and i were picking up some decent speed. i decided to work on my pumping skills and started carving quickly left to right. before i knew it, i was cutting pablo off on his side of the road, so i tried to cut back to my side. instead of cutting back, i somehow lost traction and flipped into the air. while i was supermaning backwards, i could see pablo narrowly miss my board that was tumbling down the road. first thing to hit the road was my back, and then the back of my head whipped into the ground. the impact knocked my glasses off. when i got to my feet i figured i was about to pass out because i couldn't see, but then i realized that my glasses were at my feet. luckily, the helmet saved my ass both crashes. however, the second crash cracked the helmet. time to get a new one! and one other lucky thing...my friends got both crashes on tape :) at least there are some fruits to show for my efforts

I woke from an afternoon nap, and realized it was time to get to the skatepark to meet some friends. got to the park still sleepy and yawning after only being awake for about 20 minutes. took a couple runs on the spine ramp, felt tight and decided to hit the skreek course for a little more warming up/waking up. rode up a bank ramp, went to pop the tail to flip my board up to me and catch it. popped the hell outta it as my foot slipped a little, and watched my 38" Lib Tech fly up past my outstretched sleepy hand, as the nose of the board smashed squarely into my nose. I have never bled so much in my life. it hurts. P@io

well my crash happened on a mountainboard.ive had many but i thought this one would be the worst so far... me and my friend were walking up one of our usuall riding spots when we saw a big bolder (5ft tall) and of course couldnt resist.so we head down to hit it.my friend goes first and lands in some soft stuff and goes down but not too hard. so i thought well i can show him up and land it!so i get ready and head off i land in some soft stuff too.and as usuall i say wow i wanna try that again so i come off in a different spot... some thing happens i jump up holding my wrist and say "i think i broke it" so i head home to go to the doc and get it checked out.he said too swolen to tell so i wait a few days and go back turns out i jammed my growthplates in my wrist knocked meticarples, elbow and sholder outa place! not as bad as a broken bone but it hurt pretty good.my wrist is still a little sore but every thing else is just fine wayne

Went over a bonnet last week, not at any speed, not a big thing. Cracked me up though how much I had to REASSURE the driver that I was ok, I mean it is actually my fault for carving on the street, she didnt ask for any old geezer like me to suddenly appear at her windscreen gong "WhAT THEF*$K" etc. But I've NEVER had what I'd call a real crash, because I'm healthily chickenshit. Adrenaline thrills are in my opinion a thing to snuck up on softly and charmed into a good time, no sudden moves, mastery at all times. Oh wait look who's talking..

I got bowled for the first time yesterday. I was skateing my 40" carver downhill, approaching a corner fast when a car shot out from a side street and into the street I was about to turn into.(If I was a car or cyclist he should have given way to me but I guess skaters don,t count) I went wide and followed him into the street when suddenly he stopped for pedestrians. I swerved around him and the pedestrians but a taxi was coming the other way. I tried to carve back in but went splat into the side of the taxi, then rolled a couple of times down the street. I grabbed my board, told the pissed off looking cab driver"sweet as, no dents", and split quick before a scene could be created(Skateboarding is illegal in the central business district). No injuries other than a sore wrist and a few scrapes. Could have been worse. How could this have been prevented? SLIDER GLOVES! Also a smaller board would be easier to manoeuvere in busy city streets. Not skating on busy city streets is not really a realistic option, but the right board and safety equip/slider gloves as well as not letting speed get out of hand, and being prepared for the worst to be just around the next corner will help keep you alive.

Everyone that skates in the streets, if you fall don't roll it out!!! That used to be the thing to do before sliding gloves were invented, but not any more. Rolling causes impact injuries. Sliding gloves allow riders to eliminate impact injuries by letting the plastic take the abuse.
Noscabs, make a pair and get with it. Use the search function and find out how to make a pair and also to use them.

GUYS! stop getting your skin drug off of you in the streets, leaving your beloved flesh on the pavement. Learn how to roll when youy fall. don't just slide it out. And don't be a wuss and give up longboarding. YOu gotta pay your dues. I did just last weekend getting hung up on a frontside grind at a skatepark. SLAM! Can't sleep on right shoulder and elbow still. At least get some pads and learn to knee slide on those plastic cups. thats what they are for. I'm getting some padded hockey shorts. This 42 year old man doesn't bounce back like he used to.

Scooby- Try to wrap your brain around the fact that you WILL fall again, then wrap a helmet around your brain. It's getting cold enough outside to put on some heavy denim layers to limit the road rash factor. Throw down for some good pads and keep at it. After a couple of bails with no injuries, you should have your confidence back.

I took a spill last month, the friday after the attack on america to be exact, but what i need help on is how to get back into riding? the crash I had scraped both my arms, both elbows, both legs, knees, shoulders and my right palm. But now, I am healed, And want to return to bombing hills. Only one problem: When I look at some hills i have bombed before, "soul ride" if you will, ya know just for quick, adrenaline. but now, now it looks a lot scaryer now. I can't bomb them, they look huge, i wonder how i did it before, and i almost always slam on the brakes when I start picking up speed.(where Im going to fast to be able to run it off) I try to work up the hill, trying it at a certain part and working my way back up, but it's just not working. I think to myself "what if a car cuts me off again?!" -thats what happend at my last crash. Its the slowest hill by my house, only about 30-35 mph. I can't bomb it, and need some advice before i give up my favorite sport of sport of longboarding. Thanks

I have just been getting into long boarding. I have a Sector Nine and there are some nice hills where I live. One was probably a little too nice for me. Real steep, real narrow, and really hard assphalt. ANyway, I went to fast, ate it all down the street. I had a huge gash in my arm down to the bone and some narly scars all over my body. I was in the hospital off an on for four days! Ya it was bad.

Just like to agree with Noah, same story with the medical profession in New Zealand. Twice I have broken my leg, twice they have said it isn't, twice I've gone for a second opinion, twice it was broken. dipshits. Another piece of wisdom from my flatemate, don't skate drunk. He came back pissed from the pub last wednesday, "watch me, watch me, i can do an ollie," he weights 95kg and he landed both feet in the middle of the board and snapped it. No major injuries except for that HUGE dent in his pride, and the fact that he can't ride until he gets another board.

Kinda funny....but kinda painful. My buddy and I were out bombing our favorite hill after work on August 13. I was filming him, so I had taken my gloves/helmet off and dropped the knee pads. After he flew by and around the bend, I put the lens cap back on my girlfriend's *new* sony digi cam and stepped on my board to just drop around the corner and catch up with my buddy. As I came around turn, so did he. We locked eyes like deer in headlights and smacked head-on. We were both tossed several feet, camera flew down the street, and both boards had disappeared into the woods. It was a hard head-on hit and we were both pretty banged up. My main immediate concern was the camera, which looked like it had been thrown down the street, but seemed to work ok. When I went to stand up and go find my board, I dropped to my knees in pain from my left leg. I could hobble, but it hurt like all hell to put any weight on it. After 30+ minutes we both found our boards and went home. The next morning, I still couldn't walk, so I went to the ER for an X-Ray. Negative. The Dr said it was probably a soft tissue injury and to stay off it for a couple of days and take Advil. After about 3 weeks, I was still having major pain, so I went to a local walk-in clinic for a second opinion.....nada...."just take it easy and take lotsa Ibuprofin (sp?)....after another week it felt *a little* better, so I started to skate around a little. After another 3 weeks, the pain was still there, but I was able to skate a little more aggressively, which led me to a fall, which re-aggrivated the leg. I sat out for another week and then began practicing slalom again (something I'm itching to learn). Anyway, because of the annoyance of the constant pain (and the fact that I have insurance) I went to my doctor who referred me to have another X-Ray. ...Whatdoyaknow - plain as day...big ole crack clear through the left fibia. gives me a lot of confidence in the medical profession, ya know? Now that the injury is almost 8 weeks old, I have closure. I know now that it's broken and the pain was (is) not just me being a wuss. Now, where's my board (and advil?)

Lithium, New boards? How about wrist gards and a hardhat with rearview mirrors!
Glad to hear you were right back on it. That's a nightmare to get caught from behind like that.
I took a hard spill at the skatepark yesterday. I was making the approach to a little concrete ramp with a lot of speed (for a crowded skate park mind you, not really all that fast). I had to come wide to get through some traffic and thought I was clear, but dropped a back wheel over the edge. I cleared the ramp, doing 10+ feet airborn before sliding about 10+ more. I heard someone say, "that had to hurt". I looked up at the crowd with a smile, holding my hands up, and said, "wrist gaurds". I was a little stiff today, lost a little skin and had a bit of swelling in one finger, but not so bad thanks to the pads. I was the only guy of about 30 riders with any gear. Wrist gards and helmet. But hey, I'm 37 riding a longboard at a park. I didn't have anybody to empress but me. While I don't always wear pads, I do think it is always a good idea.

Well, It's me again, if your wondering who i am, look back a page... Here's the story, August 16, 84' My birthday. August 18, 2001, My Accident. Well, "Gimpy" and I, were boarding down from the big hill (Tower Hill), it was a good ride, or so i thought. About 8 blocks on the road (Telford), nick and i were doing basic tricks at 10-15 mph. (flat, straight road). The road is 8 miles+ long with no sidewalks, just ditches and gravel. So we were in the on-comming traffic lane,(so we could se cars in front+back. All of the sudden a '67 Blue Mustang(stick). Hits me from BEHIND at 40-45 mph. I land on the hood and roll off to the passenger side, hitting my head on the rear view mirrior putting a 2 in. cut in my head. i hit the ground at 30 and tear up my whole right back side on the ground(4 Stiches)(rock hole), i stopped my roll by putting my left hand down slicing my wrist/palm open 2 1/2 inches.(7 stiches). about 30 sec. later i get up and wobble to nick. The driver (19yrs.old) Takes me to the hospital, while nick makes jokes the whole way. Needless to say i was boarding 3 days later... in the rain. God this sport is addictive. If you don't belive me, i'm posting pics of my injuries online, e-mail me for more info/photos...(sick-o's) Hey the good news is since she was "under the infleunce of illegal substances" she paid the bills and insurance cut me a check for $1000 pain and suffering... Well i guess new board(s) are in order.

Not-so-bad crash story... I was trying the abec 11 83mm wheels for the first time and tried to turn 90 degrees up the steep driveway that I use to slow down. I was hauling major ass and didn't know it and got launched way, way up into the air. I was afraid I would screw up my ligament replacement in my knee so I grabbed the pine tree I was flying past with a big bear hug. It stopped me from falling down a 10 foot drop at speed. I simply fell on my back in a boulder ditch. All of this happened right in front of my friend who went before me. He had tears in his eyes when I climbed out of the ditch and tried to find my sun-glasses. My arms had amazing red pine-needle marks all over. This pine tree saved my ass! My friend at the scene said I was at least 8 feet in the air when I tackled that tree. Just a funny 15-20mph crash story.

there is a perfect hill where i stay for the summer, two lanes, newly paved, extremely light traffic. i had ridden it at least once a day for most of the summer with no incidents, it was my last day there, before my board got packed i went for one last run, i am pushing up the hill saying hi to a friend as i pass, the only stone on the whole road, of course i hit it, stop dead, one big scrap on my knee, and a hurt pride.
