What do you make your molds for laminating out of? And what the hell do you mean by jacking it? I am wanting to make a board made of a few plys of baltic birtch with a layer of composit ( i don't know what kind though...maybe you can suggest something) And then fiberglass the bottom twice and the top once. How do you get the fiberglass clear when ever i try it is opaque.

after wakeskating my 60 inch I think that laminate is the way to go it keeps the cracks from happening unless you can keep your board dry soft angled riser pads try the sidewall from a truck tire

Anyone experiment with poplar composite. Remember the Sims tapekick. Never a more beautiful and light laminate made. Poplar rocks.

using male and female moulds and placing three layers of 4mm marine ply betwwen themm and jacking under a heavy object say....... a house. I use a high quality epoxy resin to glue the three layers together which gives a very strong bond and also strengthens the ply. By laminating any shape is possible. I am considering adding a aluminium strip down the center of the board during the lamination process so that the finished board has an invisible spine . But that is still in the development stage.

My board , the Jeff,(this isnt the plank i crashed on slideman)kicks ass. It's 4.5 ft by 11 in wide. It has gullwing trucks, swiss bones bearings, no risers, 70 mm kryptonics and graphic grip-tape(it's the shit). Anyone got any recommendations about risers? please?.

Recently made a six footer from a slab of 1" poplar. It's a good board. Slightly flexy but strong enough to take a good hard pump. It's way cool for carving at 25mph or so. Not great for slides, but for cruising, carving, bombing and footwork, it's da kine.

Nev ive tried a few boat builders here in dunedin but with not much luck.If i,m going to get some from some other town what do recomend. Ive head that either maple or birch seem to work. Also what do you mean by verticle laminating?. To laminate my boards i have built a male and female mould and jacked it with the three layers of ply under the house. This produces a perfect concave deck with a convex kicker every time. Also what type of wheels and trucks are you using on your KAIMAI CRUISER. cheers Duners longboarder

i have been building 48" longboards from three layers of 4mm 3ply.By using an epoxy resin and a mould i am able to produce a wicked board with just the right amount of flex.To solve the problem of the kicker being to bendy make it convex so it acts against the concave shape of the board. To make things interesting we have made up an attachment that hooks up a ski rope to the back of a bike so you get a hell of a lot of speed.Lately i have been using a cheap type of interior ply which seems to holding out but now i am looking out for an improvement.Quality wood is hard to come by here in New Zealand anyone got any ideas? cheers NZ longboarder

Big D,
As I remember, they used to make Plexiglass decks in the mid-70s, but they shattered when they hit a curb. They were abandoned pretty quickly. I assume that's why nobody is making them today.

I saw some of the problems my fellow boarders were having with stopping. I invented a brake that does wonders for my Gravity 42inch mini-carve. I'm sure it would work for others also. All you need is a couple spare parts from your old short boards you used to use when you were a kid. I just broke my Gravity two days ago, I think we are just riding them too hard.

Anyone with experience or tips on using a beam made of wood, finberglass, aluminum or whatever to add strength and torsional rigidity? Remember the old Powell Beamers or the mid 70's GT boards with the aluminum box beam. I haven't seen this used in longboards with the exception of Mondo boards. Haven't tried one though. Also, how do you select good wood to prevent warpage.

Try this. 2 sheets of 3/16th highest grade birch you can find. Make sure there are no warps. I've found great sheets at hobby stores or boat building supply houses. Clamp them together with with fiberglass/epoxy in between. Then apply two layers of fiber glass epoxy to the bottom, on layer on top.
Number of layers and thickness of wood may vary depending on length, width, wheelbase, your weight and desired flex. This is the way I used to make boards in the late seventies and a few are still holding up. The kick tails were wedge tails made of solid Mohogony, its easier to cut then oak and looks bad to the bone when contrasted against birch.
