Thanks Brian
(also thanks to the webmaster here for your email-I haven't had a chance to email you back yet)

I'm making this board at school so I've got access to lots of facilities. A guy last year made a surfboard and he made a two part form and put weights on it. It only had a single concave though.

Mary-Ann, i ahven't been making boards for that long so i can't recommend a specific wheelbase, but i can say that you'll probably want it to be on the smaller side. you might wan it a little wider also to give you more carve for your weight. Just wondering, i'm thinking of doing this also, how are you going to shape the concave? i've thought about just propping it up under a car for a while or even making a concrete mold.

I was just wondering what people thought would be the best deck length, wheelbase and thickness for me. I'm 5'6", 114lb and I want this board to carve. Also any opinions on wood would be welcome but I know this has been covered in the archives loads! I'll be making my own ply and building a double concave into it.

I've got a new site at www.mary-ann.net with some longboard stuff on it including links and an overview of different brands of trucks.

The mention of the carpenter level reminded me of an idea I had,an indicator on top of your deck that reads out the slope measurement of the hill you're riding.

To support my weight i put under my board a 100x18mm beam of aluminium wich give the board the stiffness my rides need.
I cut the deck in a 15mm plywood board, I don`t know exatly what sort;i cut the beam longer than the deck because trucks,
beam and deck aren`t bolted at the same place.Trucks are bolted to the beam within 34" between the nearest hole to fix
them. The deck is about 33"long and is bolted to the beam between the emplacement of the trucks.
Actually the beam is like a supporting beam.Oh..The beam is a what the carpenter use to make a flat level.
Welcome in the rocket world.

Brian, look for an 8mm flat washer that is 20mm at the outside diameter,But put a speed ring (the little axle washers that U can get at SK* shops)between it and the bearing,as not to scuff the sheilds,or cause overheating.Look for Mc Master-Carr or other machine tool supply company for the bigger washers.

Bloody hell superfrog, 6'11"! I weight 84kg so my Cosmic 1
is a bit to flexy.

Can you describe the plywood you're using? I'd like to have
a go at making my own deck, but the plywood I've seen in the store
seems abit flimsy.

would using washers that are exactly the same diameter of the bearing, could you put a hole in it and put it on the axle before the nut? i'm always getting crap inside the bearings. i don't like when you pay 30$ for good bearings then they get worn down by grit and become loud as anything. my only concern about doing this is how much air circulation do the bearings need to avoid over-heating?

I`ll give you my own translation.
4 stars moreover will shine in the parisian longboard sky.I cut them this week-end.I made three traditionnal flat longboards from 40 to 50" and
th 4th is made of a plywood board enforced whith an aluminium beam;it`s aimed to downhill. It`s tremendous, there is nothing more stable.I tried
monday night in Paris, i was the king.
If you want some advices, I`ll be there. My boards are strongs because I`m stong;I`m rather a big guy 6ft11" and 95kg(about 215 pounds) and i
ride my boards seriously.

E-mail me ..

I`m french so excuse me to speak french.

I'm going to put together a deck following Tannis Watson's advice:
http://www.angelfire.com/de/longboardskateboards/tannis.html
Anyway, I'd like to try soaking the deck and clamping to get some camber. I've read that the amount of camber in the deck should be relative to your weight, but I don't know how much. Would anyone have some clues?

Want to try a cool board stain, find some acrylic artist paint and rub it into the wood with a wet rag or paper towel, colorblends or fades are cool and easy. wipe off excess and they dry in a couple minutes resand the edges and laquer looks professional.

Mike, use colorfull paint, and use green and blue and leave some of it showing the wood. That would be nice.
