I just finished my new slalom board that I have built for a slalom event in Salem Oregon this weekend.
Some of the pictures were taken before the wheel cut outs were done. I got a chance to ride it today on a hill and it handled great. I Used 6061 aluminium for the spines when using aluminium for extra support I think it is very important to attach it to the board every few inches. I have a 6-32 stainless screw going through the deck and into a threaded hole in the aluminium spine every 5 inches. this makes the board very solid. So if you like a stiff board. Or if you are making a very long wheelbase, I would highly recommend it.

If she's flat, 29.5" - (2"nose + 2"tail + 4.5" for trucks) = 21" inner bolt to inner bolt...good for a slalom-style board. My latest homemade carver has a 22.5 WB and carves like a dream. Good luck.

i think "top locks" are an all metal lock nut, they're kind of cool, i guess much more heat resistant than "nyloks" i tried some for mounting hardware (10-32) the do however wear out pretty quickly and once they wear out they spin off very smoothly(not a good thing)look for low profile 5/16-24 nylock nut is replacement for most trucks. A local, tyler, bought radikals and got them with out axle nuts, and one had a factory crossthreaded kingpin ,that i had to chase the threads on the insert and the kingpin.

Well I love the finish on a good glass coated board. Light weight biax cloth and a good lamanation epoxy is what we use. The old fiberglass resin is real brittle and will start to look like an old corvette in no time. The metal strip thing was tried back in the 70's by Tom Sims. We shot at it out at the concrete pipes in Bakersfield Ca in 1979 on the way to signal hill speed week/party. He didnt think much of it. Look up U.S. composites on the web. They can hook ya up with the right glass and epoxy. This makes for a real nice paintable finish, and a all arround better board. Have fun---Narddog

No, I didn't buy Radikals. Does anyone know if those are the right nuts for regular skateboard trucks? (axle nuts)

If not, can anyone recommend a good source? (eg 100 pieces, very strong and durable)
Thanks in advance, Tobi

Hey everyone, I couldnt really find anythgin in the past articles on fiberglass. Is this better way than other methods to strenghten your board. I was thinking of running a strip os 16 guage metal from truck to truck on the underside of my board. To stifen up the ride I think someone needs to clear my head with this. Oh and Its going on my home built baltic. Anyone with anythign to share on the matter
I love this site. right on

Thanks for the explanation. That's some stuff I didn't know...the over-50mph part I mean...I've never gone that fast, and with God's help I never will. Just a cruiser / pool carver.

Well Tom that is an old debate. You can go real fast on a 2+4 with wheels on it if thats what your into. I can put bbs wheels and brimbo brakes on a honda, but it wont be as cool as my v12 BMW. We build our own stuff becouse we dont like whats out there. Without inovation there is no progress. One board can be alot more stable at speed inturn faster at the bottom of the hill. I dont have time or the typing ability to explain the hole composite thing on this website but at speeds at and over 50 mph there is a hole new set of rules. Loft, rebound recovery and alot of stuff only my old professors at MIT could explain to ya. They would love the fact that you ask such a thing. It shows you have the ability to think. We would still be driving model T's if someone didnt want a better one. ----------------Mike

Say Narrdog, how is one deck faster than any other? Didn't that Italian renaissance dude already prove that gravity has the same effect regardless of mass? After friction is reduced by bearings and higher wheel durometers, what has the deck got to do with it?

took it out for it's maiden pretest roll to the chinese food ,no grip, unfinnished. Nice, really interesting, the trucks i made have a 40 degree angle, they seem as quick steering as my 45's, they are quite loose but only powell yellows, shallower geometrys,do lien a bit harder on the bushings. Maybe since the board is a bit flexier, the trucks may pick up a degree, maybe two. The low ride height is amazing, i'm using 65mm nuskoolz 78a, they seem real quick also. I'm thinking that a low rounded wheel will drift nicely,on thing though, with my trucks and such small wheels they my grind a bit easily on driveway seams, just gotta watch the angle you ride over those things.

a little to close,to the bike,i think. to a fairly high degree biker was drafting the bike. Also speed on flat is alot safer than going downhill; as soon as you let go or fall you slow down a lot quicker,on a hill ther is more momentum to the ride and the fall of an unsuccessful attempt. Safer and less wind in your face(helmet) doesn't sound like the elements of a "world record" to me.As far as i'm concerned the fastest speed on a skateboard going down a hill with nothing in front of it is the record, maybe a tow in is ok,but the tow vehicle should slow and get well behind the skateboarder before the speed counts.

Im realy glad you guys are still into showing a little style and going fast. I like alot of you have been hobbled up with work kids wife money bulls#@!, and got away from skateboarding for a few years. I have never been without one but my life got in the way of any advancement in the sport. I built boards for some of the fastest men in the sport back in the late 70's You dont realy think Hester was riding a G&S at signal hill do ya. The fast way down the hill is still my way. I own a composites shop up hear in mariposa ca. We have just completed a press to build my old boards again. If only one of you rides one the sport will change for the better. I saw Biker do 80+ on tv last week. Thats all good. But where was this old world record he broke recorded. We ride HWY 140 at Chowchilla River bridge at over 70 all the time. We dont use sport bikes to get us up to speed. Randels abecs my board and balls is all it takes. Dont get me wrong I have all the respect in the world for biker. He reminds me of me 20 years ago. And Im sure those sector 9 boards are just fine if thats all your used to. But my carbon fiber core maple longbone was,is, and allways will be a hotrod. We make these with the same love and care we make F1 and GTP cars with. You will never find my boards at wallmart, Im not in this for the money. Its a pride thing. By spring we should have ample supply to share with the rest of the world. So if you would like find out more feel free to give me a call. Nic, you obviously need to have a solid plan before you start building, but about the plastics, they're typically way too heavy. Check out www.flexdex.com and read the part about the material they use. Composite resins and fibers, not solid plastic.

Hi
I'm looking for axle nuts (for regular trucks). They should be very strong and durable. Which nuts would you recommend?
Are these the right ones?

What does "Grade C" mean?
Thanks, Tobi
