big 5
On 1/29/2000 rob k wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

i buy my pads at big 5. they have a pretty good veriety of pads. the best thing is that the idiots that work there are always mis-marking the prices. i got some rollerblade vert pads for $15 that are normally like 25 or 30. and my friend dan got them for $5! i also got some elbow pads that are simillar to pro-tech for $9. my wrist guards were regularly priced though($27)
later,
rob

They make a combo shin/knee pad thats real light and probabely won't slip down, I got them for DH mountainbiking ,they're kind of pricy ,use recaps ,by the way velro caps(on those other pads) will probabely come off ,so the old duct tape warrior style comes in,actually reattaching the first cap with leather baseball mitt lacing strips, and then duct taping the recap on by the edges ,where the tape won't get worn off to quick.

Harbinger knee pads
On 1/27/2000 Jeff wrote in from (209.245.nnn.nnn)

Harbinger makes good quality pads, at least the ones I've seen. They are made to cover a lot of your leg, large wide caps, and thick padding. There are also two strips of padding that fit on both sides of the knee. I've noticed it's usually a good thing if pads are designed for vert, they are usually heftier and better designed than those marketed for street/all purpose. If you are concerned about leg movement, hefty pads like Harbingers are probably not the best choice.

Elbow and Knee Pads
On 1/26/2000 Carlo Medina wrote in from (207.215.nnn.nnn)

Boneless Skate Products make some great knee pads. What I find most unique is the white "cutter board" material on the knee removes due to a velcro backing. Very handy if you enjoy scrapping the pavemant every so often and they need to be replaced. I have ProTec elbow guards and they are ok for general use. The Boneless Products are somewhat expensive but worth every penny. When it comes to personal saftey.....nothing is really too expensive.

Elbow & Knee Pads
On 1/26/2000 polyperc wrote in from (147.72.nnn.nnn)

I usually ride with gloves and a helmet for protection, but I would like to get some elbow and knee pads. Who do you guys think make the best pads? Right now I'm looking at Harbinger and Pro Designed, but they seem to be designed for vert. Any suggestions for slalom and downhill pads?

Thanks

re: DUI
On 1/14/2000 Ryan wrote in from (199.218.nnn.nnn)

I've heard the same, but with a small correction. In some states (as in my very temporary residence of Ohio), A DUI citation may be possible on anything that has a (single) wheel. Such is the occurance of a guy riding a unicycle. No joke. The cops should be punished for taking that seriously.

DUI
On 1/12/2000 A New Guy wrote in from (207.167.nnn.nnn)

I've heard that you can get a DUI for being drunk on anything that has wheels, including bicycles and skateboards. So, drinking and skating really don't mix.

Drinking too much alcohol: Wear the helmet!
On 1/12/2000 Keith Fellmy "Mr. Safety" wrote in from (206.31.nnn.nnn)

One night my wife and I were drinking. Actually it was Christmas Eve and we'd been drinking all day. Well as can happen when drunk we get a little horny. Now she's knocked up again. My four year old is looking forward to having a sibling to push around (oops I mean have around).

So remember fellow road warriors. IF you drink too much and don't wear your helmet you too will experience a lack of quality downhill time because you will be working your ass off to get ready for the next generation of downhillers (God I hope the wife doesn't see that statement) that you are bringing into the world.

Later dudes

Keith

Cliff sliders
On 12/24/1999 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

When are they due? I dont really need them ,in fact I've offered them on this sight for 40 bucks which is a fair price , I doubt a commercially produced glove will be less. Right here on the sight where people post constantly about these most excellent and (in my humble opinion)necessary accessories. No responce? good luck Cliff! thats not even sarcastic, really.

I used to luge on my board all the time, until i got into the tricks(ollie, kickflip etc),but im going to start longboarding as soon as it gets warmer over hear. When i luged,i had a set of wrist guards with those plastic wrist shock absorbers.I would use those to stop after bombing a hill, but they wore down after about 10 runs,so i cut out the top peice and used that.Ill probably buy some new ones and try to coat the plastic shock thingys with some hard material.these wrist guards will stop on a dime, and their excellent for powersliding.

Leathers
On 12/6/1999 Mario wrote in from (205.227.nnn.nnn)

I've seen motorcycle roadracing leathers for as little as $200. The local Cycle Gear in Redwood City CA has both two-piece and one-piece leathers for about that price. Sure they aren't top of the line, but they'll probably do for skateboarding.

Home made
On 11/29/1999 Cranker Sore wrote in from (63.27.nnn.nnn)

Here is the solution. First, never use shoe goo or any tacky material. Go buy the 3.00$ leather garden gloves and sew some velcro for secure closure around the wrist. Then work in some surfboard laminating resin into the palm and finger tips. just enough to soak in but not too much area that it will crack and peel. Then, use Q-cell or Cavocell or micro bubbles and mix with surfacing resin (has wax in it for non tackyness) and place bulbs of it on the laminating resin patches. There you go! You can keep adding to the resined areas because you were smart and bought enough of the stuff to last many slides. enjoy

Salomon Gel Hand Sliders
On 11/23/1999 Brian C wrote in from (24.113.nnn.nnn)

Hmmmm that stuff looks like some sort of palm protection
in addition to the wrist guards. You probably could slide
with those but I bet that thing would wear fast because the
material it's made of was not so resistant to continuous
sliding on the ground (I used to slide with my wrist guard
and ended up destroying it) and they cost 23 bucks, so
if you really would want to use those, stick a piece of
urethane on it or something whatever...just don't let the
pad contact the ground. I think if done right this could
probably be a really neat sliding pad coz it can both slide
and can absorb shock.

on the "SKATES ON HEIGHT" website, they were selling pads called "gel hand sliders" made by salomon. Does anyone know if these are actually slider gloves, or are they just wrist guards or something. check them out at the "pads" section of http://www.skates.com

I'm looking for the major wristguards that have a hole/wraparound for the thumb and a pivot point right on the wrist. In other works, they go around the thimb and wrist. I thought I saw a picture in a mag once. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Gloves
On 11/16/1999 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

Got mine done, three pairs to start, lacing the skids on felt like sweatshop labor. The palm and cuff are laced on with a few separate lace section each needed to be tied and trimmed ,but if I used one lace for the whole piece if it comes loose the whole skid is loose, this way only a corner comes loose,I think I'll crazy glue or shoe-goo the knots tommorrow, theyre a little crude but definitely worth forty bucks , hell just the plastic parts are equal to six powell tailskids probabely more the gloves are like 5 bucks that means I mounted all six skids for five bucks, I think I may even be cheating myself! oh well ,introductory offer,It'll be interesting to see what "Cliffsliders" cost.

WHat kind of glue can i use to mount plastic to my gloves?
I use Batting Gloves and cutting boards. I first tried some 60 minute Epoxy, but the plastic fell off before i could even hit a hill.

What do you guys recomend for keeping those plastic pieces on the gloves?

this i have always done. i use to go down this hill when i was a kid. but now the speeds
are going to be ~35-45 mph. it has twisty corners. at these speeds and also including the fact
that it takes some distance to bring a power slide to a stop, i need advanced warning.
since the run would only take a few miniutes i thought of getting a "wide load" sign and
stop trafic. it would not be a lie either, i think i would need the whole width : )

F*&%$#G Cars in my way
On 11/9/1999 PreSchoolRider wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Mike, consider tossing down either cones or flares at the ends of the hill you want shoot. This won't stop cars, but it may slow 'em down a little,or cause the drivers to wake up from their rolling naps. The radio is DOPE!As you are cruising this road, don't forget to look around(that's Uphill+Down)for cars, and walk it ahead of time to see where bailout zones might be,or other things like manhole covers, dogs, high curbs, dirt driveways, etc. might be.Lastly, pick a time that dosen't have a high traffic volume(if one exists)for that epic hill shot.Good Luck ,SK8 on!
