first off ,i didn't really want to insinuate anything sketchy being done by a up trucks employee/rider/buddy,whatever, but the jump from liking them for slalom to reccommending them for dh, seemed rather large. I guess it could depend on exactly how different your dh is from your slalom, if you don't go down very large hills and turn alot...is it dh just because there arn't any actual cones on the street. But any way, now we have the post, a rider who rode/raced,,maybe even sponcered for dh by up?,can't stick with them, using what sounds like a unnamed handmade swiss truck, that sounds really really interesting to me.I'm not gonna take any more shots at up trucks, they are what they are and if you like them,i'm not gonna bust your bubble,if you have fun with them....

UP TRUCKS AND GUTO GIMENEZ
On 8/21/2006 Luis Lins wrote in from Switzerland  (83.77.nnn.nnn)

Hi Guto and everybody, well sorry for delay but i travel a lot for the races in europe now, about up trucks, i dont rider more for uptrucks, i tried in 2004 euro races and for me the trucks not work in downhill standup, i lost one year (2004) for learning this trucks and one day i decide not use more, because the truck is not good in turn for races and for me shure, this is my opinion.
Now i use swidish truck from Dan Kahalani, the truck have 200mm, i'm really happy with the results, now i found one truck really good for turn, fast, high speed.

getting more out of your trucks
On 8/15/2006 nic wrote in from United States  (69.228.nnn.nnn)

you know those regular buushings the bottom one just circular and the top cone shaped. well if you flipped the top cone shaped one with the narrow end at the bottom your trucks will turn and carve harder

diagram: top bushing ^^^ bottom bushing ^^^^^
^^^^^ ^^^^^

flip the top one so its like this!! and then put the washer on and tighten to desire

..more on originals
On 8/15/2006 Chris wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

Yes, the cam rotation of the truck's turning mechanism eliminates sloppy bushing slack found on conventional rollerskating pivot/axle design.

I have set originals to totally loose and totally tight and found an expanse of new turning angles at lower speeds. When I want to go fast, I get out my trackers. When I want to grind and transition vert, my trackers are still my true loves. With Originals, I'm having a major affair with self generated speeds on the flats.

I'm totally into the evolution of skateboards and riding for 45 years doesnt hurt my desire to find boards that fit my style of riding instead of finding a board that promotes a style. With originals, at first they were too squirrely. But it was because of my brainwashing with the old rollerskate/kingpin/axle design still over 90% of the market today.

All I can say is that when you first get a pair of orignals, be prepared to make adjustments. Have your alan wrench in hand and adjust til you find that sweet spot for the terrain your choose.

I know others are riding originals for street and bowls but that's an area that may take some time for me to adjust into.

For now, I enjoy that predictable turning arc that you may find yourself too. They arent for everyone, but then they dont try to be. I'd have to say they are for the disciminating skater looking to round out their quiver of earth sliding tools.

Keep skating mates!

herbn, the originals are not torsion, but 'cam' style.
I think some russian engineer invented it for k2.
retail $55 I believe, i might get one...
the original website doesn't really show how they work.... :-(

Pickle truks
On 8/15/2006 Daniel wrote in from United States  (68.17.nnn.nnn)

Hi, I just got a flowlab Nuclear Pickle, and I found it very unstable! One of the truks was quite sticky and the deck was warped about 7 degrees over 36". I emailed flowlab twice and got no responce. If any one is wondering, They work...well they are designed similar to the bushings of original's trucks, but they do not return to center and the "adjustments" are not very different. The tightest setting will almost stop wheel bite, but the spring is so weak and the 'cam' of the bushings is so sallow that there is not much difference.
I have two sets of originals and I love them, so that is where I am comming from.

they look like a seismicish geometry, lot of offset. Are they a torsion truck? seems like they are, with the central bolt supported on both ends. Looks cool,i havn't heard anybody call them great speed trucks yet, so i suppose they're just real loose. What is the average retail price on them?

Originals and Flat Land One Foot Skating
On 8/14/2006 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

I cant find a better truck on the market that satisifies my style of flat land skateboarding, which is not to be confused with truck requirements for downhill and bowlriding :D

As Scott(originals inventor) states, that "resistance curves" is the feeling of a lose truck with resistance in opposite rocker movement. When I'm one foot skating with either foot, I feel like i need stability while the need to turn on a dime if need be. No other truck comes close!

This is the first time in many years i have found a double kick 38" board I like! Many thanks to Pablo and the old watson skateboard mfg crew for making these boards plentiful and cheap :D

So with this 38", I can pump and skog to my hearts content on the flats.

As for the turning radius.. yummeeeeee! Thanks Scott!

cheers
Chris Yandall

MARK...

mark...
thanks for the kind words on the trucks.
as it turns out, some of the things we talked about in paris and my overall impressions on the whole truck deal came back to you full force.
but you aren't gone and nobody can take away from you what you did the last few years.
you enriched the slalom scene with your presence and your generosity and you created one of the best trucks ever, period.
we took your trucks and their performance as a measuring stick(which is a very hard task) and we tried to improve a few things.as it seems we were very successful in doing so and, believe me,the hype created around the G.O.G.'s is quite surprising for us.that is something we didn't anticipate.
well,we got two top pros showing up at the us nationals with those trucks and then everybody can see/experience what is true and what is exaggeration.
all i know is that the feedback we received so far is more than positive.
but as a lot of things has been said about those trucks already i'm not gonna go into a repeat mode.let people see what the deal is and then everybody can decide for himself if he really needs those trucks or not.
i know the result already and this time i won't be surprised.
alas,i want to thank you for all the good moments you gave the europeans last year with your presence and your team.
you are controversial to a lot,but the few who know you a bit better, know what a big heart and what a soft core you have.
that's what will be remembered.

Tracker Agro's

I got my hands on an old pair of tracker agro trucks that i want to recondition.
Trouble is the hangers are so far gone they need replacement. I'm after something between 100mm to 130mm hanger width. What would be the best substitute thats avalable today? It looks like they suit the rts style gnarly pivot, would fulltracks work?

If you go back 4 years and read the posts relating to truck design on this same forum, the same issues were raised about both RADIKAL's and PVD's. Don, I think the concept of GOG trucks are noble and innovative. If you think you are going to have all the bugs worked out in the first run, I would not bet the farm on it.

High performance truck manufacturing is not a business, it's a passion. Who in their right mind would spend hundreds of thousands of $$$ funding an activity, with limited members, for the sole purpose of creating and perfecting a product that would out perform any other available? My accountant calls it idiocy. I called it fun.

You go Don, I hope you can have the same fun for the money that I had with the BEST bunch of people I have EVER come to know. It's what life is really about. I know that now.

I can say that yes, the more you make at once, the less per unit the cost. And yes I STILL have originaaly boxed Radikal trucks made in 1978 in my garage-but they cost less per unit than if I did not have them in my garage still!!!. I had fun then too at the ARA circuit. Maybe in 30 years, Don, you will be able to take some of the GOG trucks out of the closet, still in boxes, and get big bucks on e-bay. I'll be dead, or wishing I was, maybe not, who knows.

I am proud of Dan for stepping up to the plat for the COSS nationals as a sponsor. I wish There were more names on the pro list, Between the worlds and the nationals, It doesn't look as though we could even field a 36 bracket event. I remember well when there were as many as 60-70 "pro's" signed up. Oh well.

We at Radikal:Mike (sparky)Renick,Jack Smith,Keith Hollien, and I, Are fine. I stay out of the day to day verbal scuffles on the sites only because I am busy getting my business back on track after galavanting around the world for 3 years. The TALON line of milled downhill/ditch/longboard trucks are now comming off the line- finally. Mike and I are dedicated to being there for all of your product needs for years to come. It's interesting though that Mr Randal never advertises, never talks to anyone of US, never sponsors races, But still sells product. AND WE STILL BUY THEM. Go figure. Here's one for you WAX---his trucks SUCK- but you DO get what you pay for them, not much in terms of any quality. They DO work though. I would like to see his line take off as $100.00 per truck for a fully CNC machined-split axle- conical bearing truck is not that bad. We will have to make alot of them to make a decent margin--or I will have to make more room in my garage.

I planted a tree- I water'd it- I furtilized it- now it needs to grow on it's own. Period end of this story. Don's is only beginning.

I miss all you guys, I was thinking of making it out for Dan's challenge-- But I already have a set of his trucks.

You guys take care.

Toddc Ups
On 8/10/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

I found a few old pics of the modification. In the final version I rode the truck with limiters again, but I shortened them. The front one was 10 mm shorter and placed around 20 mm more backward to match with the turning truck.
The rear limiter was 5 mm shorter and stayed in place. The deck can tilt a little more than shown in the last pic, there are around 5 mm left between truck and limiter.

Hey, Good one George, except you let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag. Hopefully I'll run into you again one of these events. My next long distance travel race will be the Dixie Cup, Are you going?

Mitchell, Always can count on You man.

Incidentally, if ANYONE thought my rant was for real, it was of course a joke parody. But if you get on Dave Mitchell's bad side, he WILL physically place me in close proximity of whoever gets on his bad side and give me too much RedBull and start me to talking about trucks, bushings and the like to wear them down. He did it to Chaput at Hood. Schlater-P

Who let Pauliwog have Red Bull
On 8/8/2006 Another guy from Orygun wrote in from United States  (206.103.nnn.nnn)

Yes Pauli knows trucks, yes Pauli can straighten axles like no other, yes Pauli drinks way too much Red Bull and is allowed near a computer with internet access. I can personally attest to having lost untold hours of my life talking with Pauli about trucks, axle straightness, wheels and contact patches. While any conversation with Paul can be and is very mentally stimulating, after two hours of his ranting, the most interesting of subjects can become an exercise in self control. Anyone who has been cornered by Paul on a Red Bull binge will agree.

See you in a couple of weeks Paul!!

Pauli trucks
On 8/8/2006 george g wrote in from United States  (159.87.nnn.nnn)

Pauli trux rock! They are the best and straightest I have ever ridden. Pauli's special tools re-aligns the misalignment and makes sure everything is square. He then puts on a D/A converter and charges it to reverse the spectrum of the particles. Cryo-deep freeze to negative 212f. These trucks are sooo superb. Although I haven't won a race yet, they rock! I am going to replace all of my trux with Pauli trux. I heard that he just got a shipment of platinum plated titanium in, I am nothing without the ultimite bling. These will be a special limited issue, extra special production run (for only his friends and top level racers). Of course I think Pauli is just teasing me like Mr. Bennet...

By the way if Mr. Bennet screws me over this century I will not buy his stuff next century. I want to try at least one new Bennet Pro for my T/S board front. Gilmour says they rock!

UP
On 8/8/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

I rode the combination soft/front, medium/rear. I didn't race and I ment stable and fast for a board with such a small turning radius. Stability compareable to a Randal 180 with softest Bones bushings but with a much, much tighter radius.
Removing the wheel-bite-preventer will stress the truck!

On 8/8/2006 Guto Jimenez wrote in from Brazil  (200.165.nnn.nnn)

Just a doubt: which truck hardness were you using? Was it a soft, medium or hard set? I rode the hard type in a fast situation and got satisfied with the performance - but, once again, I've only ridden them a couple of times.. As far as the wheel-bite preventer, I think that if you remove it, the truck might be overstressed and likely to break.

Herbn UP
On 8/8/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Hi Herbn,

I've ridden the UP Trucks 180 for while. They are for Longboards and I don't know If they feel the same as the slalom trucks. I liked the softness and the stability of the truck. What I disliked was the indirect steering. The trucks don't react as fast as my Randals or Holeys, because the softness of the material allows movements in all directions. So not all the tilt pressure results in steering. On the other hand they gave the smoothest ride I ever had.
Later I removed the limiters and added huge cutouts to the Moska Flex deck. That was awesome. The 40 inch board had now a turning radius around 30 inch. A great surfer and carver and still stable at higher speeds.
I heard from a dutch distributer, that tere will be tearing issues, if you remove the limiters, cause that will stress the urethane to much. I had my fun, but I like the ridgid boards like my Lush Bahari more, so
I traded the Uptruck/Moska for an Ed E.

i guess i'm a truckist eh,oh well. If you bolted ups onto a board with total wheel clearence and left off the travel limiters ,what would happen? would the truck get quickly stressed by deep carves, would there be control issues? how about crossing a seam or crack in a road at speed?,on an angle?molded urithane trucks are something my thirty years of skating won't even let me consider, could be worse i could reject the ollie.

OK, that was over-the-top and lame but I just HAD to do that for Wax's benefit. Here's to 'ya man, I definately learned a lot about the whole truck "thing" from you, Fluitt, Walgren, Gezmer, PVD and yes, actually from that fancy-pants Marcus Schmarcus and his cigars. Adios-P
