Broken King Pin
On 9/22/2006 CurlyWhirly wrote in from United Kingdom  (87.242.nnn.nnn)

Hey Manny,

You may wish to try your local tool store for a great little idea called an
Easy Out. They might come as a set, so check if you can purchase individually.

You drill a pilot hole in the KP and fit the Easy Out. Then (hopefully) unwind.
Simle great wee tools!

Hope that helps.

Curly

Asphalt Nirvana
On 9/21/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Hi Peters,

I probably will be in that aerea in October for a ride, just to check it out. Last month I have been to a nice area near Hamburg. Smooth pavement in a nature reserve area without any cars - verry nice.

The C2 Backtruck rides a little like an Indy with longer kingpin and big, soft bushings.

Mabe I'll take some pics the next time.

CX issues
On 9/20/2006 peters wrote in from United States  (24.18.nnn.nnn)

Derik, its cool to hear (someone elses) detailed impressions about the carver CX! That short rear axle issue didn't occur to me, but thats because I'm almost always running indys or trackers on the back, I haven't bought a rear C2 in ages. I toss out the cup washer on the front right away, as they chew through bushings like butter, and replace it with a flat one, or ride with none at all. I'm pretty sure the newer front CX bushing cup is recessed into the baseplate now (they've learned...) As for the kingpin locknut loosening, I guess that one doesn't bug me too much because I'm like a trained monkey tightening these things after 20 miles or so...

It would be really cool to see some more photos (or even vids??) of that gigantic asphalt trail nirvana you've got over there someday!!

Randal DH Upgrades

Dan... For the money, the Force C7's are a good bargain. Not cheap ($65/pair), but far more precise and smooth-riding than your DH's.

yea i've ridden crails and they're definetly good all around trucks, but they're not quite dh specific for my purposes.

dh trucks for Dan
On 9/20/2006 Julien wrote in from United States  (67.174.nnn.nnn)

Crails are great if you don't mind the extra turnability. They sit lower than Randals and have a pretty close to 8mm axle (a 5/16in counterbore won't fit on them). I took them up to the mid 40s this weekend on a topmount with soft bushings and didn't have a hint of wobs. Only thing that felt weird was my feet from tucking a whole run, hehe

Carver CX
On 9/20/2006 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

I skated around 30 miles now with my new Carver CX/C2 Truck System.
First: I love the performance of the trucks! They are great surfers and the best pumping trucks I have ever ridden. I use them for surfing on a narrow street in front of my house and for long distance pumping (approximately 5 miles) to work as well .

But there are issues, I dislike.

The first one is the short axle on the rear C2 truck. That makes a secure lock of the nyloc-nuts impossible. I run Flashbacks with Bones and 10.4 mm Spacers. I use the delivered, verry thin speed washers as well, but the locknuts could not be wrenched flush with the axle. The axle is 2 mm to short on each side. (locktite does the job, now)

The second one is that the Bottom washer eats the bushing of the front truck. The solution is in the C2 back truck. A nice mold with rounded edges in the baseplate holds the bushing well. And if it pops out, it will slip into place again easily. Mabe this will be an improvement when it comes to a CX II.

Third: The swiveling movement of the CX hanger moves the bushing around the kingpin and that lossens the kingpins new locknut. (fixed with locktite and a greased washer)

taking out kingpins
On 9/19/2006 Julien wrote in from United States  (67.174.nnn.nnn)

I had a buddy break the kingppin on my Indies and if yours are the same they have a weird little spline type thing to hold the pin in the baseplate. I took an extra bolt stuck it in the hole where the chunk was left and whacked at it with a hammer a few times. You might need to do this to get the new kingpin in too if you're replacing with a similar splined one

Exkates Still Turnin
On 9/18/2006 Thomas wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

I'm surprised to actually see a post on Exkate trucks. It seems like nobody gives a $hit about them any more. I bought a pair of those cherry red 75a bushings for my 101s. The swervieness is insane. As soon as I hit about 40mph, I get what can only be described as the worst speed-wobble imaginable. I'm actually surprised they can even go that fast without wobble given the absence of resistance, but with a truck that can carve that hard, I never have to reach 40 even on steep grades. The nice thing about the really soft bushings is that they definitely allow the full turning radius and they allow you to hold a line in carving because the bushing is not forcing the hangar to recenter. It's a wild ride that I cannot compare to anything - I wouldn't replace my Exkates for anything else on the market today.

speed springs
On 9/13/2006 herbn wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

i wonder if speedsprings would work on a turner, for you guys. I don't really know what angle they are ,around 45, that's a simple natural angle to go to,so it's a natural guess.

Gullwing 2006

Hey,

I have a pair of Gullwing 2006 Which I had given up hope of any use. I can only
surmise this is a bushing issue? It seems such a waste not to ride them,so I wonder if any one has views on trying Holey bushings? (Or Khiros perhaps?)

Advice appreciated.

trucks for vintage turners
On 9/11/2006 john Gilmour wrote in from United States  (69.183.nnn.nnn)

Adam- actually the small pivot tracker full track was the widest truck I can recall that actually worked well in the Early 1970's. Bennetts might be a bit too "divey" for a turner. Lazers were a very fast turning truck. The ACS 651 was a slower turning truck (too slow IMHO). The ACS 650 was a great truck for GS if you used the 650 baseplates mixed with tracker small pivot hangers... that had a great feel. Funny thing is with that ACS tracker- the trucks will weigh double that of the board. Gullwing HPV's were also a heavy truck and you could mess with the geometry a bit by changing the height of the bottom nut.

I used a Henry Hester Fiberflex with Bennett Pro ad-tracs for years and then when I went to the Turners...I really wasn't sure what do do as the Turner could not turn as quickly as the Hester with Ad-tracs..however the Turner was far more stable. So when you mounted Tracker full tracks on it you had a short wheelbase board that was stable for bombing a 30+ GS course. The problem was...who would want to go 30+ on any slalomboard other than a Turner at the time? The likelyhood of people setting a fast TS with some GS gates tossed in at Near 30+ just wasn't so likely in a contest- because anyone on a super turny flexy narrow deck (Like a 26" double cutaway by Fibreflex) would likely get the wobs 1/2 way through such a course. I've ridden Lasers (Martin Draytons) on Turners and that combo does work for TS. an exotic combo might be American magnesiums ...good luck in finding those.

California Slaloms were so unstable- but for a very lightweight rider (under 100lbs)- they provided turn and traction.
