splitfires

quick question the small nut on the threaded rod with pivot ball on the end (the ball that goes into the pivot cup) what does it actually do? on my front truck it comes loose after a few pumps and makes a rattling noise i'm sure its there for a purpose but just wanting to know out of curiosity.

great trucks though!

Mr. Yandall, you're not the only one wishing for a set!!
Chris, maybe cut this guy some slack?? After all, I wouldn't be here now if I hadn't seen 'Downhill Motion', and I do recall a certain shot, of a guy going So Fast that his shirt was ripplin' off his back!! True Inspiration, that...

Luckily, I passed a bit of that enthusiasm on to Schwippert, and a few others.

So, Mr. Yandall, please know that you, Weaver, Cathey, and ShuFly had a good deal to do with my passion for the sport. I've tried passing it on, and in kids like Adam, or Ben, or Ian Spiro, I succeded a little bit.

SPLITFIRES
On 1/28/2007 A-Drain wrote in from Australia  (60.231.nnn.nnn)

Cam,

unfortunately I get the trucks complete so sell them that way too, I could sell you a hanger only but it'd be the same price I'm afraid. The Split should fit straight into a Force as it has identical geometry to a Randal, but I have to admit I haven't tried it.

Cheers

A-Drain

Chaput Fyre Trucks
On 1/28/2007 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

Yep! Imagine the mad doctor chaput up sleepless nights putting together a damn great idea ! These trucks should take the industry by storm. He wouldnt let me take a set ~!!!! DAMN YOU CHRIS :P

Ok work out the bugs and get in production mode. The truck geometry is being redefined by adding an adjustable mechanism that makes all angle pads redundant.

Imagine setting your front trucks for a 40 degree turning radius with the rears set to 60 . or vice verse. I dont know how much more beans I should be spilling but he had several variations preset with mind blowing turning sensations...

So CHRIS, ITZ A WINNER

I WANT SOME NOW DAMMIT :D

cheers

Cam's Rear Truck Options
On 1/28/2007 A-Drain wrote in from Australia  (60.231.nnn.nnn)

Cam,

another option for a rear truck would be a Splitfire either the standard if $'s are a problem, or the new Pro if you can afford a little more the Pro's are $175 and the R1 are $150 delivered, so stuff isn't always dearer in the Antipodes!!!

Offset thoughts for Cam
On 1/26/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.69.nnn.nnn)

Cam, what an offset does is position the axle in 'the middle' of the truck's leverage sweet-spot, which is where the axes of the pivot and the hanger-loop around the kingpin would intersect. By way of example, PVD's ,Randals, and Seismics do not realy need an 'offset', as they (especially Seismics / PVD's) true pretty much along one axis of pivot. Trucks like Indy's(or the RTX), or Bennetts, have an issue here, where they inherently 'twist' where the pivot-angle deviates from what the kingpin angle of pivot movement would normally dictate. You'll see this in two areas of wear; In the pivot cups where there's an oblong 'dent' in the pivot cup; Or in the bushings, where you'll see an obvious 'slant' to how the hanger has pressed on the bushings. If the bushings are worn like that, they're doing a Lot Less of their designed function of stabilizing the turnig action of the truck. Back-in-the-day, You'd see that a lot with Chicago roller-skate trucks. Tracker's 'OldSchool' (narrow pivot) geometry, which the Gnarly, B-2, and RTS inherited bent the pivot just before the contact with the cup (as did Proccer, Lazer, and early Gullwing Pro's), so it's axis lines up with where the center of the kingpin is, more-or-less. This creates a stable-turning truck, which can be made 'quicker' with height leverage in placement of the Axle (hence, Lazers turn in Quick, where narrow-pivot 1st Gen. Trackers are a bit slower, but very Direct.). Higher the axle, the more 'tippy' the truck is (wherein, PVD's beat out Seismics).
O.K., enough confusion; Tracker's RTS offset is excellent for G.S./hybrid, where the RTX/Indy offset works best in T.S. to Hybrid. The Airflow (and it's forefather, the Turner TTC) as well as the Asphalt Playground Series 1 trucks do a little boogie Between the RTS/RTX geometries, where the baseplate in an Indy, BUT with a lower-set axle that's actually just under the Axes Intersection, so it stabilizes very nicely. Consider it (other than the PVD R-2, Radikal Dragon's Tail, and the new Mitchell COG) the best value in Slalom rear trucks, as it's versatile, tunable, rugged enough, and just Tech enough to race at international Pro competitive levels. You'll get great G.S./Hybrid performance from an RTS Offset, and good performance (great in TS) from a Bennett or RTX/Indy offset, and you'll get great-to-good performance from an Airflow/Asphalt Playground/TTC rear truck in all courses, pending bushing/wedge set-ups. For the Record, I've found that my 'German' Seismics have given me good results in all courses, BUT, have required re-working the springs, and paying great amounts of attention to my wedging, and my own kinesthetic responses the the spring-system's Rebound Rate. Seismic's are now on three 'race' boards in my quiver, but I always refer back to my RTS rear (8mm axle, Geezer-X mod!) or my TTC if things aren't quite right.
Trucks Should Be simple, but, um, are not. It's the little things that one discovers in the tuning that make one wonder IF any of the Truck Designers really understand what WORKS?!?

hey thanks agian PSR and thanks Bugs, yeah i think il get a race track set, but am considering an airflow back truck or an offset race track. i know they are more expensive than i planned to spend, but i really like them.so my question to you is what is the best offset around to match the 106mm rtx front truck??also should the offset hanger be on an rtx or rts??im really confused with the whole offset concept, can someone please help??thanks

Cam's truck setup
On 1/24/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.69.nnn.nnn)

Bugs got it right, by and large. If you're limited on the budget, I'd stay with Trackers, and tweak the wedges, bushings (trimmed Radikals at the rear!), maybe splurge on 8mm axles. Bennett front with an RTS rear should be nice, though for G.S., the RTX might be the better front, as it's not as 'tippy'.
A Siesmic at the rear is great, IF you can dial it in. However, a big bushing on an RTS can be pretty good, too. A front Seismic will take some sorting out, as it's tough to get the spring tension loose enough for T.S., and usually another spring kit would be needed for G.S.. Bushings on regular trucks are cheaper than spring kits, even if they last only 1/10th as long...
If you've got the $$, also carefully look into an Airflow truck at the rear...

Cam's trucks
On 1/23/2007 Bugs wrote in from Australia  (59.167.nnn.nnn)

Either (1) or (3). I don't like Seismics on the front for slalom - it feels like I really have to stamp on them to make them turn, and they don't react quickly enough, even when wedged, and especially in TS.

I've experimented with an RTX front and Seismic rear, but it was a heavily de-wedged 45 deg Seismic mounted on the tail of an Axe, and it was still too turny for me at the back. A 30 deg Seismic could work well - I just haven't tried it yet.

RTX/RTS is cheap and it works.

Another cheapish option is to use a Bennett as the front truck, with either a Seismic or RTS in the back. The Bennetts turn much more than the RTX and are great fun.

On 1/23/2007 cam wrote in from Australia  (220.233.nnn.nnn)

hey thanks PSR for the advice on the seismics, but can you just clarify something for me??
What would you(or anyone) reccomend?
1. tracker rtx-front(106mm) seismic 30deg-rear(105mm)
2.seismic 45deg front tracker rts rear
3.rts/rtx combo

they will probably be used for a bit of ts and gs, i would buy more than one set of trucks but i cant afford it.and all the trucks will be around the 105mm range.
thanks again

Custom Bennett Vectors
On 1/20/2007 christophish wrote in from Canada  (70.73.nnn.nnn)

Ok so I just got my custom Bennetts from Click here for link

Here's what I got:
I went with the 88mm hangers, but they are also available in 76mm (Same width as the O.G. Bennett Pros) and 99mm. It was between the 88's and 76mm, but I decided to go with the middle ground. I also got the Khiro set-up with the "towers," used for running the shorter Khiro barrell bushings rather than the stock red rubbers.

Upon initial inspection:
These are a very nice looking truk. The craftsmanship on the mocifications is top notch, particularly on the offset rear. These things look bombproof to me. The offset arms are both pinned and WELDED!!! That's right guys... welded! I looked at a 76mm one as well, and because it is so narrow, the arms have been welded to the bushing cup as well, adding even more strength! The hangers on both truks have been nicely faced after being milled down to the desired width, and the stainless steel axles are lathed to 8mm from 10mm leaving a hub beside the hanger so that speed rings are optional. These truks can be spaced out 10mm in width on each side for a total of 20mm, maybe more.

What I gotta say about how they ride:
I have them set up on an Axe II with Manx 69's, wedged as per the Brown Bomber from Sk8Kings (2 postive khiro soft wedges and a 1/8 flat in the front, and 2 negative khiro soft wedges and a 1/4 riser in the rear) . I've taken these for few runs on my street (I live on the prairies, so we are talking FLAT). So far they feel freakin sick!!! They pump really well and I was up to speed in no time. These truks respond VERY quickly, and have that really surfy Bennett feel. I haven't run any timed runs yet, but I can tell you I feel way faster than before.

What I like most about these Truks:
Besides their killer performance, the SOUL that comes along with these truks! Bennetts were a killer truk back in the day, NOTHING turned like them. And these new truks possess the same soul as the O.G Bennetts, mostly because of their simplicity. In this age of modern slalom, other high end trucks have a very technical look and feel to them, which is rad, don't get me wrong! But it's nice to get the same performance, for me anyway, out of a simply designed, nostalgic feeling truk! I find that very refreshing, call me a purist!

My recommendation:

GET SOME!!!

Here are some pics:

Cam's Seismic question
On 1/20/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (208.45.nnn.nnn)

Cam, sorry for the delay in response, had the Twins, etc to handle 1st...
What I prefer, using the newer 30* and 45* bases is to moderately wedge (um, 5* to 9*) the front with light springs (rate these by your weight, and by how 'loose' you like to ride) for G.S. or Hybrid Slalom. I don't usually run these, as I'm pretty happy with an RTX up front, but on torsionally stiff boards they're fine.
The new 30* rears actually steer less than I like, So I'll put in +5* or 3* wedge to give just a tad more steering. I use fairly stiff springs at the rear (reds or old-series golds) to give more thrust. If the setup dosen't 'tip in' quickly enough, I'll grab the next-softer-spring Inner spring/cartridge, which then will let the truck make soft-quick moves, but still keep the driving thrust of the stiffer main springs.
With risers, it's important to get some shock absorbtion, as the new Seismics are metal hangers, thus they transmit vibration more than the old German made plastic hangers did. Dooks or Tracker soft-rubber do the trick well.
If your board is thick (like a Turner Hybrid), consider drilling the mounting screws at a slight angle, as to better fit the nut's shoulder to the truck baseplate; It's a tigt fit in there with a socket wrench if you use more than 12* of wedge.
Lastly, If you've got old German 8m axle Seismics, they're a good rear truck once they have more than 9* of Negative wedging (which takes the 45* pivot angle to 36* or less). I make my own wedges from truck spring-lift blocks, but now Khiro's Rail Wedges give you all the options in angles you need. I use -16* for T.S/Hybrid, and -12* for G.S./Super-G/fast cruising, and these work best again on stiff decks.

5-10mph on flats
On 1/18/2007 Chris Yandall wrote in from United States  (70.167.nnn.nnn)

All kinds of skating disciplines out there. My comment was for the lower velocity gravity pulls on the flats. I have even have a figure 8 routine where i switch stance and lead foot direction into another figure 8. The goal is making smooth transitions on either switch stance figure eight skog. And indeed, boring only occurs for those who cant handle the saddle and do not transition smoothly, quickly and effortlessly in the figure 8 path of deep grooved angled turns.

Bennetts and Originals arc like mofoze for pivotal turns.

The movement helps me to stay shape and I have a structure to prove it :D

As I evolve and grow with this skogging technique( it's a new exploration everytime I get on ), I'm discovering some switch movement that I wouldn't of ever found without switching pushing legs and cranking turns.

Thank god for quick turning trucks!
cYa
