Went and pulled a couple of my Skateboarder mags from the stack and that particular ad appeared in Vol. 3, #1 October '76. Went back a year to Vol. 2, #6 August '75 and 41st had a much simpler ad, both ads, most of the mounted decks with wheels that are sealed. By late'75 most of us had sealed bearings on our boards (at least around where I am at in Norcal).

i'm pretty sure tunnel and sims wheels only came sealed bearing, i also remember that particular ad being interesting and confusing the letters are all over the place out of order and in a few spots it's hard to tell which letters go with what, i don't know if there was ever a tunnel competition full cutaway board, like in the pic,you don't see the bottom of the board,it may be mislabled, some stoner definitely put that ad together. There were urithane wheels with sealed bearings before roadriders,i have a rollersports cataloge from 74/75 with sealed bearing in it,they just weren;t the soft grippy urithane like roadriders.

Thanks. The wheels are definitely sealed bearings: Sims, Road Rider, Tunnel etc. I'd like to think it's late '75 but it's more likely to be early/mid '76. Watching Downhill Motion has inspired me to get this board set up.

Nice photo John! Not seen that one before, where did you scan it from?
I agree, tricky one. However here is a thought. The first wheels to have sealed bearings fitted as standard was the Road Rider 2. Do any of the wheels in this page have sealed bearings? Its too small for me to tell from here. Anyway, the date that the Road Rider 2 came out is easy to find in magazines (I cant rememebr off hand) and if any in your picture have sealed bearings then its after that date. It looks from here like they are all Open in your photo ? ?

Does anyone know what year (and early/late if possible) this advert is from? In the UK our first magazine started in '77 so the 75/76 stuff gets a bit confusing if you don't have early copies of Skateboarder, which I don't. The Logan has the Makaha logo which I thought stopped in '75. But were California Slalom available in 1975? The reason is I'm putting together a 75/early 76 board and want to make sure the components are correct; and not having any ads from 75/76 Skateboarders means I'm a bit thrown.

i found a old duraflex scateboard at a good will. i thought i could clean it up and hock it on ebay, but, as i looked at other duraflexes, i noticed they were all yellow, and mine is blue. just need some hints on where i could get some info on how rare it is to set a price range for it. if you are intrested in bidding, find it on ebay, or just e-mail me. it is in good condition, earlier than 1970 w/ little damage and never been taped. thanks for any help i get.

Vintage dood,
i love your pictures, but check the sizes before you upload them fella, they make the page too wide and very very slow to upload, i'm surprised Adam hasn't removed them!
Shoot me a mail dood, i lost all my contacts because of a harddrive malfunction, so lost your mail address.

Those are B-52's (from early '81 or so) on that Sims Phase [II, III ?] ; but the real question is what wheels are on that Duane Peters?? Krypto Conicals, OJ Double Conicals, Blackharts, or ??.

also on those lines, the sims phase III followed the 2 which was in the ad and i guess there was a phase 1 too. the prototypes were made with george greenough(sp) those sounded really interesting supposedly they couldn't get them back from the test pilots,i wonder if any survived.

Thanks for answering. They are the 8-ball type. I looked up the other number I couldn't remember yesterday. So the shield says
Fafnir 38KD C7
I googled some more and it translates to 8 balls (C7), 8mm axle (the 8 from 38) and one shield (38K=no shields, 38KD=one shield, 38KDD=two shields).
Probably german made as it doesn't say U.S.A. or Japan anywhere.

Fafnir Bearings

Stefan, those are likely original bearings. Fafnir's were, in the day, and for a good while after that, one of the fastest bearings you could get. BTW, are those bearing using 8 or 9 balls in them? Most companies use 7 balls, but Fafnir had 8-ball versions offered for skateboarding use (actually, sewing-machine bearings), and I've seen the 9-ball variants in Industrial use.
John Gilmour probably still is running Fafnirs in some Slalom/DH board. Mine are on my Hobieflex, for added 'Vintage' points.

Hi, I posted about my Taperflex Spoiler before, here are some pics:
http://www.lowpoly.com/skateboard/index-spoiler.htm
I wonder if it has the original bearings. I thought I had replaced them but I'm not sure anymore. The writing says Fafnir C7 and another number. One side shielded, the other one open. Are these the original bearings or recent replacements?
The board is from 1976/77.
Thanks, Stefan

Vintage Man, Sh*t sorry to hear about your fall, really sorry to hear you damaged your beautiful Sims board. My wheels must of been bowl riders because they didn't have Sims molded in to them,it was in white writing on the back side. I wish I had some of these boards y'all are showing. I sold it for 35.00 and I thought I was getting big money of it.

gullwing stuff

Speaking of gullwings, when my dad moved out of our old house (I was long gone), I left all sorts of stuff. among the stuff was 2 sets of 7" pros, one of which was originally a 8" pair that used the washer stacks, but switched back to the narrower 7" axle. And a set of Phoenix. And this is just then GW stuff!
To date I still do not have a set of 7" pros. They come up on Ebay on trashed completes, but they usually command a lot more $ than I am wanting to part with. I am not a collector, I am a rider. SO I use full-tracks on my resto-riders instead. Walt did make a set of 8" pros a few years back, but they just aren't the same.
GW Pros are very bizarre trucks. People that love them, love them. Everybody else hates them. Everyone says they dont turn. Truth is, they don't. But the guys that ride them take advantage of that. they can be ridden soupy loose and still remain stable, yet are incredibly reactive just of center. Other steeper hanger trucks (ie INDY) will loop you in a heartbeat if ridden that loose. then when you tighten them up, you lose that reactiveness just off center.
I have spare sets to keep me going, but I really do miss them.

Buddy, Sincere thanks for the fill-in on the Gullwing trucks. I'd always wondered why a 9" Pro (meaning the 7" and 8" chunky-hangered truck) wasn't made. Damn. I had a set of those very same 9" Pros that were blue. I always figured that they were Pro IIIs because they weren't raw/polished - they definitely had the burlier bushing ring in the hanger (which sets these apart as the later Gull Pro IIIs have a more sculpted look - like a Sixtrack - this is not the Super Pro III I'm talking about...). Whatever. The Pro 8 was, to me, the defining wide truck of that era. Nothing looks as good to me. Also, I do have a 7" hanger and two baseplates. Never found another hanger to set up the pair though.

Those Pros are just the first issue 9" pros. When the 8" versions came out, they retained the small pivot diameter of the original 6" classics and 7" super-pros. Around late-late 79, they revised the hanger (and baseplate) to the larger pivot and put out the revised 8" versions and the new 9" versions. We were still skating 8" pros in the summer of 79. When andrecht visted that summer, he was still on 8's also. Sometime in 80, I broke a truck hanger and had to upgrade to the whole new truck. I ended up riding a 9" rear and 8" without any issues and skated a long time with that set-up on the folmers I was using at the time.
when trucks starting getting wide (8"), Walt sold some of the 7" pro's with 8" axles and washer stack-up on each side. For some reason, I never had trouble with them, but I sold them/ traded ASAP to get some regular hangered 8" versions. 7" pros are pretty rare and washer stacked 8" pros are very rare.

Andrecht, Toft and Gulls

Ah... my bad on the Toft. I bought one of the Creepsurfy ones. It's shorter than the Toft and has more plys. But it's similar.
Anyway. The Gullwings on that Andrecht pic are only the second set of those I've seen. They're the earliest Pro IIIs with the chunkier hanger. It's kind of a hybrid between the old Pro (8") and the classic 80s Gullwing Pro 3. Nice.
I'm feeling you on the conical Snakes! I was fortunate enough to locate 2 x green and 2 x yellow, unused, from a UK distributor. They would have been perfect companions to the Andrecht's green/yellow graphic.
Mind you, it would have driven me slowly mad watching it all fade to black, while hanging on the wall. SIMS urethane colours are so fugitive.
