That's one of the coolest boards I have ever seen. Just one little bit of finessing I'd suggest. Slap some yacht varnish on there to make the whole thing really shine.

haha thanks for the comments, i responded to an email on this earlier so i might as well post for all to see... the board isnt done yet, in fact (and this is gonna kill you) i outlined the letters with a thin black sharpie and they really popped! as far as the orange bushings go, i fully intend to ride this board hard with friends and the orange khiros fit my weight/style. The blue wheels are having stars and a banner painted on the outside to resemble the starry center of the brazilian flag, its a brazil themed deck after all =) ill post pics when its fully done!! =) =) =)

what was once a Makaha, like anybody elses Makaha is now way better....something you can keep for ages and hand it down to your boy (or girl) one day and said..."i painted this ages ago"..
Seriously....everything about it....pure Andy Warhol...
there's lots of old boards out there...very few are collectible, and even fewer are TRULY rare....I've had more boards on the wall than most people, trust me...
These old solid oak boards will last forever and there's still bunches left....you had nothing to lose in painting it...
and what you did is pretty cool

But FYI, in 2001 I got a ration of stuff when I bought a NOS Makaha and
was going to USE IT!! I have got a ration of stuff when I sanded
off a sticker on a collectable skateboard :-----) You painted yours,
I can just imagine the cringing going on as I type!! :--)

Hey thanks for the info. I got a little antsy in the garage and started fooling around with it, the graphic isnt done but take a look at what ive got so far! I realize my artistic skills are next to nil but i think it gives it a cool home made look.

you collectors run at a whole different than me, for sure.
that banzai looks awesome. Did they convert the RSI wheels to precison. the RSI wheels had a good seat design that enabled precions bearing to be easily swapped over.
Mine is a gold one, with cal slalom pros and some tunnel rock copies. I orginally got it with sims bowlriders, but they went over to one of my fibreflexes immediately.

oops, I hit the submit button. anyway, the availability of those boards was in the 79-81 time frame. possibly a tad earlier, but not much. The mainstream lags the true market by a good year or two, with less quality too. So if you use the rational of the board style and shape, in conjunction of when it was in the stores, it was a copy of the "true" specialized skate industry from the 77/78 time frame, which it fits well. Its a typical solid wood quick with mid-track (ish) width trucks, and colored (powerflex-style) wheels.
Is it a good little set-up to restore with fresh bushings, and bearings? heck yeah. put some little tunnel rock reissues, or some cambrias on it and take it out for some fun.

that is one of the makaha boards that were offered by the typical discount stores (kmart, etc). though it wasn't a plastic dime store board, it wasn't too many rungs up the ladder.

It was the kid from japan. I put him in touch
with Steve in Az. Tonight will email you more info on that.
I do know via my set of Vintage Bennett Vectors the kingpin bolt
is thinner or smaller than the previously issued Bennett trucks...
Herbin and others might be a better source for your question.

I will email my ACS kingpin re-issue experience tonight. I have lots
of info: how to lose money on such a project, takes 121 strokes of a
quality hacksaw per bolt, one can drink a powerful rum tropical cocktail
while doing the re-issue work and not damage the bolt or ones self.
Look for your ACS tale and my experience tonight when I get home from my
normal career in the banking industry. Don't Ask about that!!! David

I am probably going over old ground here (I think Vintage Man may raised the same issue a while back) but can anyone put me straight regarding kingpins for original Bennett Vector truks. I acquired a set of the Stak-trak version on a deck off ebay sometime last year. I knew the kingpins were wrong and finally got round to looking at them yesterday. Early version on the Vectors in the magazine adverts show them with the large truss head, slotted bolts and later pictures (inc Bennett Litebeam photos) show a black high tensile hex head bolt. I had thought that I would be able to rob the complete kingpin/bushing set up from an NOS set of Bennett Pros but the threaded hole in the base plate of the Vector is smaller. Is this correct? Was this the set up for the early truss head bolt? Do the Vectors with black bolts have a larger (standard) thread in the base plate? Can anyone put me right before I tap a larger thread in to my base plates?

I am just digging on those two boards with early 8" GW pros (small pivot).
I will also look for a ferragamo ad with the Pillz rubbers. Something else that ferragamo offered, or atleast we had a couple at our local park shop, was an uncut blank with a hellacious tail.

as far as i'm concerned ,thee absolutely toughest laminates ever, thick old school centerplys E poxy laminated with internal fiberglass. Just look at the wear and tear on those boards,the worst one looks like it's been hammered and exposed to all kinds of weather and it's not all that bad,guarentee any other boads wold be long gone.

i didn't know ferrogamo did the pillz,those were really good bushings, i think the urithane was better than most of the wheels at the time. I never "got" ferrogamo brand skateboards,what did they have to do with skateboarding? they were also a bit behind technology wise,i think plys and wider trucks were coming in. i can do more 360's than you;)

I spotted those ferragamo pillz. those and clouds go way on back. i had the yellow ones. I stuck them in my GW pros (late 79) and turned them into a whole new animal. It was a long while before trucks starting coming with urethane rubbers from the factory.
Some real nice stuff, for sure. I also saw those sweet lipbombs. I had two identical 10" alva's with lipbombs. the only diff was that one board I had 8" GW pros, and the other was the interim 7" pros with the 8" axles and washer stack.
Those excellerators (progressive skates)are sweet too. I used to look up to the Progressive Skateboard team out of atlanta. those were some heavy hitters in this region of the country (77/78 time frame).
