it's a mid life flash back or re birth to me. skating takes me back to my youth of the 70's, it's a time warp. When i'm on my board i'm 14 again, strange feelings. If there is any crisis it's not skate related to me.

NCL- That's awesome!!!. I was never as athletic as you. I actually ended up with a drinking problem for many years. I stopped that about 13 years ago. When I did sober up, all I ever thought about was fishing. I maxed that out. Freshwater, Surf, inshore, offshore. you name it. I ended up in magazines etc. I'm still not done with that sport but I have slowed a little. Then I got into making fishing lures out of wood and ended up selling them for alot of money to collectors and ended up with pictures of my lures in several books. I also collect old lures and have begun to burn out on that....after 600 or 700 lures in my collection. I've always loved skating even as a simple spectator. After I got back into skateboarding again I decided to change the word crisis to transition. So it's really a mid life transition. I'm enjoying my life way to much right now for it to be any kind of a crisis. The only crisis I have is finding enough places to skate. hehehe.

AdamH: You have just described exactly the way I feel about riding. It is not a midlife crisis for me either. That was the tattoos and shaving my head. This is about finally making the commitment to my first love-skating. In my 41 odd years on this planet I have raced bicycles both road and mtn competitively, played rugby union for several years, trail ran, hiked, lifted weights, taught myself how to play goalkeeper in an adult soccer league, inline skated, and did a brief stint at industrial softball(talk about boring!). None of those sports other than cycling come close to skating. Riding a board, be it down a hill, carving up some killer streets, slalom, riding bowls at the park, freestyling, or just putting around, is truly an awesome feeling that I hope to be able to do for a long, long, time to come. And then, when I am old and feeble and I can't stand up, Buttboarding, by God, is the sport for me!

Thanks SS, Just last night some old skater friends of mine stopped by and I just had to show them my new boards. They were freakin' !!! I talked them into geezer night at KONA. I'm going to try and get a bunch of people to go. It should be fun. I also loaned my copy of Z-boys to one of them. He should be especially stoked after he sees that. The same guy was telling me that his neighbor was on the cover of Skateboarder in the late 70's for one issue. It turns out he had a big wooden halfpipe in his backyard here in Jacksonville,FL and it was just the beginning of that scene so he said photographers plus Alva, Jay Adams and a bunch of other guys were there. What a trip. It's amazing how many people were affected by the skateboarding boom of the mid to late 70's. I'm not looking at it like a mid-life crisis, although I can see why people would see it that way. I'm looking at it more like re-discovering something that I truly loved. I love every aspect of it, new and old. From the decals to deck art to downhill, slalom, bowlriding, pools, parks etc.. It's all cool if you ask me.

AdamH - nice skate poetry!
I read about how you got back into skating after seeing "Dogtown and z boys". I was influenced heavily into getting back into it after seeing it too. Good luck with your new Dogtown board!

Ghostcavalry: Check your email but if you don't here is the location: Between Exit 148 and Exit 150 on the westbound side. Access it from Exit 148 (Highway 90/US 64), turn right at the bottom of the ramp and then turn right beside the Burger King. It does not look too steep but it looks like a pretty long run and the pavement looks new. I am going to check it out some time this weekend and I will let you know. I have ridden my bicycle up it a bunch but never even thought about boarding it until the other day.

NC Longboarder, where is that service road, if you don't mind telling. I live in Charlotte and am back and forth from the mountains now and again. I'd even make a special trip up the road if it's not too far!

AdamH: Awesome Dude! Saturday morning is definitely going to be Dawn Patrol for me. Saw a new patch of fresh pavement on a service road beside the highway today on the way back from the mountains. It had a nice long run out and a nice grade! I am going to take my whole quiver of longboards and try them all for breakfast!

So what's up with the Soulriding? No body feeling the stoke? I am stoked! I am feeling the vibe daily! Every day I want to ride but I can't ...but when I do its totally awesome...
Feel the stoke! Feell the vibe! Cut a carve, skate a new line, take the road less traveled.

Why do I get this strange feeling that a Dobie Gillis look-alike is about to walk in the room with a pair of bongos, there's a purple haze about the place, and some chic wearing this killer ass go go boots and a one piece mini suit is dancing to some Hendrix over in the corner.
Roll one Brothers and Sisters! Roll one! ...oh oh ...

Skating. It is a tonic to the soul. It is my drug of choice. The apothecary blend of asphalt, urethane, wood, metal, and motion, mix into a chemical compound much more powerful than any found behind the pharmacist counter. At night it calls my name and I am its fiend. I’m drawn to its allure as I step into the cool air of the evening. My brain flashes back to the days of my youth. I feel alive as the road passes underneath my feet. I am high. It is feeling that this addict will seek time and again until I can ride no more. Skating. It is the alchemy I seek.

I have now come to the point in the road where Landyachtz and myself must go our seperate directions. I have truelly loved working with both Tom and Mike and it has been an on going learing experience. I have learned in this time that there are alot of people, good people out there that want to have good people working for them. Not your everyday workin joe that dont care about the work or workmanship. As I have a passion for rippin big fast narly hills and flyin around sk8 parks and pools, I find that I would very much like to get involved with the downhill scene. I would like to get involved in the setting up of races, the gathering of riders, the good times that make this sport so good for the soul. Im back to riding for myself and feelling the freedom in my soul just come alive. For about a year I started losing site of why I got into longboarding and racing. Now I have all my sites firmly set on doing this for the good of my soul and the of the souls around me. You may wonder why Im sharing this with you(as I am a Canadian). I am free in many ways to be where I want to be,being statis native allows me to do a variety of thing. I can work in the US legally as it is a part of my treaty rights, there is no paper work other than the regular highering procedures. I would very much like to know if there are any job oportunities in the sk8ing world that I could prove myself in. Please e-mail either any suggestions or possible jobs to devotion4landyachtz@hotmail.com. Thank you. Onwe more small point to make is that I am willing to travel anywhere

Viatus: That would work cool if you wanted to come up...we could go make the mountain run that morning then cut across the mountain to Asheville to go to the park. We are going to Foodlion next week for the afternoon to check it out.
Pivots: Yes, basically my terminology to describe the tight turns at the end of the carve for direction change and to scrub off speed. I am sure there is a better term but that is the one I have always used to describe that directional change. I think the terms comes from skiing....watching a skier crossing the slope at an angle and then crossing the slope and turning again.

NCL, I re-read your post and I got re-stoked. man you have it good up there on the mountains, the 30 min. run, the crete park....that's a nice one, the one I go to is little hole compared to the food lion, that makes the prospective 4 hrs drive more interesting now...from the pictures looks like definetly longboardable. oh and terminology wise I was wondering what you meant by pivot turns myself too. braddahs and sistahs the time has come to roll on....
