Zen is right on... thanks, MOMatt, GATom, got an interview tomorrow for a nice salary, er... job. Heh... I pray it goes well. As for skating alone, because you can never predict when you're going to eat it, hard, I am afraid when I hear someone has been skating alone, but I do it, too. Hypocrit, I know, but it seems so dangerous. What if you get hit by a car, and they run? What if you wheel bite or get wobs or a bolt is loose and you eat it and get a concussion, and are just laying in a ditch somewhere, no one knows you're there? At the same time, sometimes, I don't want anyone around. I want to slide or just bomb hills and I don't want anyone else around, it is an amazing time to relax and reflect and feel all holistic and whatnot. Anyway, just ramblin. You guys rock, by the way. Soulboarding... I can do it by myself, but it's more fun with ya'll. ;)

I have been hesitant to skate alone. It seems like such a social activity. So I've avoided it.
Sunday night, I was unable to get anybody to ride with me. I loaded up, and went to our local mall parking lot (the first place I went when re-learning to skate. I had two acres of butter smooth, gentle slope pavement all to myself. Practiced backside turns, low tuck, tighter and tighter. Fell off twice. After my twenty five reps (self discipline is a Spiritual Principle), I rode the lot twice...Big giant carves, fast lines, slides to stop. No one there but me. Coffee, smoke, skate.
It was way past dark when I stopped. Came home. Reflected.
Just felt like sharing. Skating alone is not a bad thing. Who knew?

taking the board on the road

Speaking of work and riding. I usually pack a board when I hit the road for work. Lots of times I don't get much riding in, but it's there, just in case the opportunity comes up. Last week I was traveling a bit in Iowa and Nebraska and got a good long skate in on the Iowa State campus. I really enjoyed killing the afternoon cruising campus on my 44” crosstown. What a great way to see a campus. My goal was to see the whole campus and I think I saw most of it two or three times before getting some tacos at a local campus hangout. I ran into an ISU student from Omaha – Jeff. He had a nice set up with seismics and flashbacks on a 48?” fiberflex deck. It was good to meet another longboarder. He said they have a small crew there and do a little sliding and cruising. His wheels were getting some coning, so I know he was getting some carving in. Longboarding is quietly alive almost everywhere, I think. I got back to Des Moines and made numerous runs around the capital. While Iowa is not known for hills, there are a few. The hill on the south side of the state capital is smooth and plenty steep for some hard carving. There was very little traffic that evening and I rode to exhaustion as the sun set with the city of Des Moines in the background. I had a busy few days leading up to that skate and a long day waiting for me with 6:00 am wakeup, two meetings and 500 miles of driving, but for an afternoon I was content to chill. Like the Zen man said, it made everything else I had to do better.

Something better is waiting for you. If you work because you want to be productive, there will be a lot of people waiting to hire you. I hope you find something you like - in a situation where you are appreciated and paid well for your time. Happy skating.

Seems like you killed the soulspeak on here, tyler. To bring it back on, here's a neat little gonz poem:
glory days i fell asleep on the bus when i woke up i was in norwalk i got off the bus and surfed my way home (m. gonzales)
I really like this one. i think it captures all the pure, addicting joy you can have just by rolling on a wooden plank with four wheels, which is ridicolous and fascinating at the same time.
f#@!ing good times!

Truly, I think you people are all really Zen. If you haven't read any Zen, believe me, its right on. Skate for yourself. Its one of the most real things I've ever experienced. I will never quit. I'm 40 this summer and I have a family, a job, a house, the whole nine yards. And skating has made the chores of life a lot easier for me. I carry the peace and joy I get from skating with me all day, even when I have to miss a weekend on account of bad weather. Sorry to hear you lost your job, but hey, its a fresh start!
Zen baby, Zen.

Byrddogz has a 57" demo board I've been taking for some chill cruising... It is niiice... Just flowing down the concrete waves in front of me... takes my mind off the fact that I just got fired for being a skateboarder... Ah, time to just skate... for days... It's the good life. Makes one want to be homeless, not pay bills, blow off personal relationships and bond with a 57" Gravity board who will never tell me that I "Care more about skateboarding than my job" or that I need to "take a look at the 40-50 year old skateboarders I hang around with and ask myself if that's where I want to be" or yell at me for having a good work ethic and making it to work early every day... and leaving at five to go ride... Hmmm. I say we kill all non-skaters...

Skating at Work

When you work on a college campus with some nice pavement, it's hard not to skate at work. Saturday a friend and I hit campus on our 57 inch decks (MissouriMatt specials). I gave him a call when I arrived on campus, and skated around the business school, waiting for him to leave his office and join me. We're both over 40, he teaches business and I raise money for Agriculture and Natural Resources. It was funny to see him walk out of Cornell Hall wearing his goofy floppy hat and carrying that big board! We carved hard enough to have some fun and get those big boards drifting on some hard turns. The twenty pounds I've gained since blowing out my knee two years ago has mellowed me a bit, but it hasn't stolen any of the soul. It feels so good to get your head in the skate zone. Four skates in a week. I'm picking up the pace again.

Nothing tops just grabbin your walkman or ipod just after fighting with your parents, boy/girlfriend, or anyone, hopping on your board and heading out for some long hours of riding, where you can lose your head in the clouds and just drift away and not come back untill you relize that your a few hours away from your house, with no cell phone, no money or anything, and you have to get a hold of the person you just fought with to bring you back home. Longboarding in itself has saved my realtionships with my parents friends and girlfriends, it has nothing but a posotive impact on your life, and brings you nothing but pure euphoria.

H0dad, That seems reasonable. But how will we know who is the best/coolest/fastest? How will we know who’s skating really matters? We might want to consider a format where whoever skates the most like I do is rewarded with sponsorship and praise. I would excuse myself for obvious reasons. No one skates more like me than me. Maybe I should be the coolest and the rest of you should slug it out for second coolest? As a prize for second coolest, I will acknowledge you in a post on NCDSA – you’ll have to work out the sponsorship part on your own. As far as skating like me, I’d like the winner to do the thing I did when my dog was in her harness pulling hard and I didn’t see the big stinking gap between the street and the parking lot I was pulling into. I bit it hard and saw stars for about 10 minutes. Of course, no one was watching. Who’d be watching a guy cruising along on a 4 foot board being pulled by a dog?
Ride on soul riders… just for yourself.

i decided to check out about slidin when i saw a article in the local papers about a group of cornish sliders thought to be the best in the world.I was intrigued to find out more about the sort of things that go down and it seems that these english guys are just a bunch of pussy hill sliders that were never skilled enough to learn tricks they just roll around doin weak little powerslides. Glad to see evryone here has the right idea about getin extreme. ps you should all go to the park and start gettin the tricks down! peace.

One of the best I've read. I like that it captures the soul of a good night ride and gives such a vivid picture of location while exploring the thoughts of the skater. Skating to exhaustion at night is cool. There’s an evolution to the ride, and eventually you give in to the inevitable and return home to your bed. Very nicely done, Ethan.
