At Hamm Slamm, while watching old guys skate, Henry also said "skateboarding has gotten so #$%^ed up, I love it"
It's a great statement of taking skateboarding back from the way it's been, to the way it was.

i don't have heroes, i long since outgrew them. years ago, i met a man who tied his buddy's hands around his neck and ran miles through the jungle with other men shooting at him. he ran to the ocean, swam out and treaded water til he was rescued, his buddy lived. when i was a kid the finest title i could conceptualize was being called a Waterman. in the true sense of the word, a guy who surfed, lifeguarded, fished, dived, piloted boats and knew the ocean. he knew the tides and when the blues would run. surfing began skateboarding. as i have gotten older and i look at 40,almost every person i skate with inspires me. everytime i point a board down a hill or into a bowl it is a gift. it is the feeling that happens to me when rolling, that i cannot explain to others and only you, other skaters understand. i actually feel sorry for those that quit skating, because to me a little part of them must have died. keep skating, if you stopped START AGAIN, don't loose that feeling. it was totally inspirational to see Bob "Steel Wheel" Staton get on that 2x4 plank and roll down the hill at La Costa, i gotta admit i choked up a little bit. Henry was standing there and he turned toward no one in particular and said "he is doing the quas, that's how it all began." Everybody was hooting and clapping, Bob is 58, i think, and Henry just turned 50, they inspire me to no end, thanks bros. the other night while just cruising, i hunched over and did the "quas" because i could. it felt good. George.

Let's not jump to conclusions. I don't considder myself old at 19, and tech skating on longboards is possible (essentialy, it's a slightly differant take on oldschool). In protection of tech skating, it certainly has its place. Let us not make fun of tech skaters, after all 2dank specifically stated "soulcarving is great". Hey, tech is great too! (I, personaly, simply preffer carving my soul out to grinding the insanest handrail). Can NCDSA handle another forum? I don't know, ask the webmaster. Let's keep it on longboards, though. This is, after all, Northern California Downhill Skateboarding Association, and so far the forums seem to more or less reflect that. Keep it real, my friends, no matter how you ride! But most of all... Skate with all your heart and soul!

We're all old here, handrails are for helping us up the stairs. Isn't "tech. street" on a longboard like "Country Western Rap"?

Handrails, kickflips, etc. aren't exactly soulful, true soul comes from skatings roots- surfing. I'm not downing tech stuff, but can ncdsa handle another forum?

where is the street skating section with tech talk. Soul carving is great, but we also like hand rails and new school skating on longboards.

Srfgypc, took my boys down to the south bay and cruised the path solo from Manhatten to Hermosa. It's funny how a little Gale force wind keep people off the bike path. Left the sunny and windy beach, went to E.T. surfshop, hooked them up with a copy of "This Is Not Skateboarding", that they will put into their video rotation at the store, came back to the valley where it hailed, rained and thundered. I agree with you on the longboard cruise at the beach, there is not much better than that. You'll have to come cruise our ditch one day.

Every morning after I drop the kids off at school, I go to the Rockville Mansion. A choice of a half dozen hills, just the ticket to get the blood flowing early in the morning, get that heart racing and a smile on the face. My morning meditation, me, my board, and a beautiful site for skating.

From the 'twilight zone'... I went out yesterday afternoon on some errands, and one board in the trunk, setup with Smokebombs+randals. One my way home from the chores,I cross paths with a back road that has new tar,and is mostly dry,and has a sweet looking 200 vert/Ft. hill to it.I stop, get out(brrr!),and proceed to walk up.As I'm dropping in,making at first easy, laid back carves,I notice some movement out the corner of my eye...I'm being passed,by two kids in the field next to me,on a tobbogan! I,of course, can't pass up a challenge like that, and drop into tuck. the three of us get down to the flats at about the same time...The kids look at me with big, stupid grins on their faces, and I laugh.I hop in the car,and motor away, thinking to myself,'this could only happen in Vermont'.Or,the Twilight Zone...

Hey Srfgypc, Next time you're in a competitive slalom event try tucking and skipping all the cones, or better yet, coleman slide right through a few. That'll loosen everybody up some. Put the magic back in their collective carpets.

Change "skateboarding" to "skating" (two syllables) and you'll have a perfect haiku.

What great posts!!!! I''m so tired of all the bickering on the slalom page...I had to check this one out!!! You guys know what it's all about...getting on your board.. taking off...finally everything is at peace!!! I've been skateboarding over 25 years...mainly slalom and longboarding however in the last 2 years my boards have gotten shorter and shorter....I think I'll take out my Sector 9 pintail tomorrow morning for a good spin for a few hours!!!Nothing better than cruising on a pintail with the ocean right there...that's what it's all about!!!!

Yeah, h0dad- if you work to much, you may lose soul! Nothing is as irresponsible as that!
Had a session about a week ago, skating from the dorms to class, across campus. It was seven-45 in the morning, and I was in the DC (Cafeteria). It takes me about 15 minutes to walk to my 8:00 class. I looked outside, and saw a beautiful, if cold, day. I looked at the clock. If I left now, I would get to class just in time. Or, if I invested the five minutes and ran up to my room, ditched my coat, grabbed my gloves, shades and longboard, I could also make it on time. I started running. Made it to my room and back in 4 1/2, and was on the road 15 seconds later. I made it to class five minutes early, face and fingers stiff and cold, sweating, breathing hard and laughing. It was like snowboarding, but on the road! Early in the morning, very few people out... cold, dry, carving into those turns hard and fast... just enough drift... yeah. Soul, brothers- and sisters- soul!

I am 33 years old and have been skateboarding off and on for 27 years. Right now I am on. I got my 7 year old son into skating soulstyle also. While his friends are on new style boards he is bombing hills with me on my old fiberflex slalom with fulltracks and roadrider 5s. I would love to get a copy of the movie "Freewheelin" that my dad took me to see back in 1976. Please let me know if you can help us out. Eric H.

Man, we run one hell of a skateboard Soul Train through the Potomac Vans Skatepark. Sometimes there is a dozen people chasing each other round the back street area. How's that for soulful?

clear night last night, near vancouver bc. i took a buddy out riding for the first time as i am fortunate enough to have two boards - one my own creation. went to this spot with some easy slopes, 'bout a two-three minute ride. few cars, peaceful but friggin' cold. first time down, my buddy goes, "dude, seriously, i'm gonna get me one of these." now that's what i'm talkin' about.

Freewheelin' has some great soulskating, but none can compare to Gregg Weavers slomo part in Downhill Motion. It's soul skating defined. If you don't have this one get it. Souled out.

Tom Sims also put out the seminal video "This Is Snowboarding" in the early '80's and it's fun to watch, there's a strong sense of surfing the snow on those early swallowtail boards, and it reminds me of the early days of skateboarding, people having a great time inventing a new sport.

A while ago I posted that I was to have a session in a local (and excellent) multi-storey garage with a pal, Aaron, who had recently given up freestyling due to knee injury, where this was to be his first longboard experience. Well last friday night we snuck in there with a quiver and got ourselves locked in, according to plan. We waited for a while on the roof until we were sure that the security staff had left, then began to ride the ramps. He was ripping and was stoked. It was good to ride behind another in this place, I wish I had a video camera, in fact, I think I'll look into that. I found that, in a layback behind him, I had a very steady viewpoint. Now, to find somebody foolish enough to let me skate with their video gear.
