Is the carveboard hard to push around. It looks like its a little heavy and the wheel are huge. Looks like it would rock down a mellow hill or maybe even a grassy knowle but how is it on the flats can you hold your speed? jus curios never riden one.

The carveboard is pure carving satisfation at its finest. It's like riding a pocket of air.

scoobey, sounds like you ride the same way that i do, so i would heartily recommend randal r-2 but definitely pop in some bones 'soft' hardcore bushings.
there's a good review of randal r-2 at...

a song for betties everywhere....
My sweetheart, skate along! Don't you hear the fond song, The sweet wheels on the hard tarmac flow? Don't listen to the tale Of the hand stinging bail, As they skate in those valleys below? So be not afraid To carve in the shade, Nor yet in those valleys below
Pretty Bettie, don't fail, For I'll cry if you bail, Skate home to your cot as we go; You shall hear that tall tale Of the hand stinging bail, As they carve in those valleys below. But she was afraid To carve in the shade, To skate in those valleys below.
Pray let me alone, I have thoughts of my own; Skate with you I will not go, To hear the tall tale Of the hand stinging bail, As they carve in those valleys below; For I am afraid To slide in the shade, and bomb those steep inclines below
Pray sit yourself down With your deck on the ground, On this bank where sweet primroses grow; You shall hear the tall tale Of the sweet hand stinging bail, As they carve in those valleys below; So be not afraid To slide in the shade, and bomb those steep inclines below
This couple agreed; They carved down with speed, And soon to the race they did go. She was no more afraid For to slide in the shade, and to carve in those valleys below: Nor to hear the tall tale Of the hand stinging bail, As she stopped in those valleys below

Scoobey,I'm not going to tell you what board to get(well,Bozi's rule!),but I'll point you towards oldschoolskates.com/ for those classic Trackers,Motobuilts, and Gullwing Pro trucks.Newer Trucks to look at are the Invader(madrid),and Tracker Dart. The Randals are sweet, too, but have a different feel to them. I've also found that ABEC 11's Flashback wheels are great cruisers, they just FLOW along really smooth, with a touch of slidiness in the 84A or harder formulas. The softer ones are like superballs, just soak up rough tar so nicely. The Turner Avalon also kicks!Kryptonics still makes good cruisers as well. Take awhile to puruse the varied opinions back in the site by using the "search" function. By Example,if you type in "randal",you'll get an idea of what kind of ride they offer, and the get a handle on what people think about them. The same holds true with most any other item you want to know about. Oops, gotta go,fresh tar is calling! Go Skate!

Personally I would go with the Exkate Torsion trucks. They suck for downhill and speedboarding, but for cruising, carving, and surfstyle they rule like none other.

Hey, folks. I'm a geezer who hasn't skated since about '81. Before that rode 36' and 48' decks with extended Trackers and RR6s in the Oakland/Berkeley hills, i.e., longboard cruising, finindg graceful lines, drifting, etc.
Q is: as I get back into it, should I be looking at Trackers or Indys (maybe on angled risers), or Randals? I've hears the Trackers are sweeter carvers at lower speeds but the Randals are stabler faster. I like medium-speed cruising but we all get going faster sometimes and, frankly, if I got wobbles at my age I think I'd croak from a coronary before I ever hit the ground. Any suggestions? If Randals, which ones (RII or downhill or ??)?
Thanks for the help. Scoobey in Portland

skating down the valleys wild, shouting songs of pleasant glee, On a cloud I saw a child, And he laughing said to me: "skate a line like a surfer does!" So I carved with merry glee. "skater, skate that line again;" So I carved: he wept to see. "Drop thy knee, thy scabby knee; and make thy wheels fear:!" So I slid the same hard carve again, While he wept with joy to hear. "longskater, sit thee down and write In a book, that all may read." So he vanish'd from my sight; And I pluck'd a hollow reed, And I made a gnarly pen, And I stain'd the water clear, And I wrote about my carving lines Every skater may joy to hear.

bObO, I'm no expert, but I was in Ft. Walton last summer. I was lucky enough to have my niece get married on the beach. A couple of days after the wedding, tropical storm Barry came right at the outer island between Ft. Walton and Destin. It kicked up a nice swell. I hit it with my churchills and a victoria handboard. There was a good crowd of local surfers at the pier the first couple of days of swell. As the beach break began to reach close out I was basically the only one left, taking the pounding that only a bodysurfer would love. I was told that the surf crowd had moved to the jetty. The jetty is down near the bridge to Destin, at the mouth of the Choctawhatchee Bay.
I saw pictures of the jetty going off at a local surf shop, inter light. It looked good, but I think you would need that rare swell for it to work. My guess is your more likely to want fins or a skim board, than a surfboard, but I haven't checked the weather. There are some pretty good skim spots along that island that runs from Ft. Walton to Destin.
Hey, while I'm typing, big soulful stoke last Friday, as I skated parts of Hwy 149 between Lake City, CO and Creede, CO. Wife of 14 years driving the car behind. She even shot some video while driving. I didn't know she had it in her! She even started scouting spots! I jumped out of the car on short notice several times to take a spot she thought looked good. Sk8ing at about 10,000 feet with a view of 14ers was sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. Seeing one of my best friends tie the knot for the first time at 38 was even sweeter. Now it's back to the up and down hills of Missouri.
Ride on all.

You need to strengthen your quads, lower back, and abdomen ( particularly your lower abdomen ), shoulders and triceps. Stretching is essential, be flexible ( true of any sport really to avoid injury ). Of course, none of this is going to work if you aren't **consistently** doing the exercises. You don't have to be massively muscular or anything, but most current research indicates weight training and stretching are necessary even into old age ( strengthens bones, muscles, and added flexibility decreases the risk of serious and minor injuries )

I don't really know what to call your trick, maybe a foward Can-Can??? Sounds like a really cool idea, i think i'll try that today. Do you have any suggestions to build up my leg strength, I am having alot of trouble after doing a couple christie's and that other foot grab thing.

Grab your foot? In an older post (search "christie") someone defines it as getting low, kicking your back foot out, and grabbing your nose and tail. The move I do, I'm facing forward in a squat parallel stance, and alternate kicking out each foot to the side, staying low, grabbing nothing. My arms go out like wings. This causes you to turn back and forth, as you alternate your legs. What would this be called?

K-LEE- I always thought a christie is where you get real low, extend and grab your foot? Well whatever that thing is, thats what im doin. I'm not doing too much hill work, I was really working on it at the skatepark yesterday, and usually at the parking lot down the street from me. I am slowly working on a head stand. I am starting out with trailing my leg behind me, than I would gradually bring my head down to the board. Right now, i think my board is too flexy to really get my other foot up and balanced into a handstand.

Brian, Yeah, those "Downhill Motion" moves have become some of my favorites to work on. Christies are my favorite. There's that scene in DM where, I think it's Steve Cathey, goes down the hill putting one foot out with his ass low, then brings that one back and puts the other out, resulting in carving the opposite way, then he goes back and forth, alternating feet. Kinda like Christies, but don't you grab your board in a Christie? Anyway, that's the shiznit. Can you do those kind of moves equally both ways? I have no problem kicking out my trailing left leg and getting low, but sticking out my leading right leg and squatting down takes a lot of balance at this point. Besides the one footed hang fives, what else are you working on? I'm trying to walk up and down the board, cross-stepping, put a spinner at each end of the deck. Now go low, into a Christie, now a coffin, back up. I really want to develop my upper body to do handstands and v-sits and stuff. Russ Howell is one of my favorite skaters of all time. Yup, soul skating is where it's at, my brutha.

Hey missourimatt There is a crew of about 10 longboarders in St. louis we ride every sat. night around 10:30. WE ride downtown in some parking garages. There is some hills in the area, but they are not very long. Not to mention that we're lazy, the garages have elevators. We also set up a slalom course every sunday in Tower Grove park. If anybody wants to ride just e-mail me.

bObO, used to stay with people in Fort walton beach, a few years ago, and although I don't know of any surf spots the beaches are unbelievable. Don't know if its still there but there was a bar/restaurant called Fudpuckers where some great cajun, southern boogy was played by local bands late into the night. Lovely place you'll have a great time.
