ok genius, go over to the slalom and the speedboarding forums and post two questions...
-Do you think 'races' or organizations in the past have been adjusted to favor certain skaters? -Do you think it could happen again?
Anyone can answer the question here as well. It would be cool if you answered honestly.
Or better yet...i'm setting up a 'race' in Mongolia. why don't you fly out and participate? the entry fee is only $100 and the winner gets to keep the Brooklyn bridge. the start and finish can't be seen together because of the shape of the course. but it's ok...we are using radios to help judge time between the beginning and finish. so how about it, you wanna 'race'?
If you're still laughing, cool! You can handle the rest... there is no Santa Claus....or a Easter Bunny...Elvis killed Kennedy from the Book Depository...and the correct spelling is 'intolerent' not 'intollerant'.
It's all a bummer...I know...don't think...go skate.

Weird, almost every shop in town sells longboards of some type around here. Most settle in with Sector 9, but we're seeing more Dreggs, G&$, Gravity, Sherman, etc. In the last week, at least two places have picked up the G&S slalom stuff, a few are interested in the Comets (one shop already carries their longboards). We are also finally starting to see a wheel selection outside of Krypto as well. I guess I'm just lucky in Portland, but people seem to be buying. I don't make it bast the afternoon usually before i see at lease one person on a longboard. If you put it out there and make it something that is fun, people will like it. Label it as an old guy's sport, and kids stop buying. I guess the shops here are just playing the market well, looking to surfers and snowboarders intrested in cross training, women who want speed without necisarily tricks, and people who want to cruise. We are proof it can be done.

hugh r, first off, i dig your site. you have a lot of great information and reviews. i don't want people to think i'm against ALL on-line stores. i support any and all that are dedicated to supplying equipment and providing great customer service. i would encourage everyone to support these types of vendors.
i just don't like it when they talk smack in public. badmouthing newcomers (skater or skate provider) and providing less than true information will only keep the sport small and insular. i'm against this type of behavior.

rulio: Nice turn-around! Here's an idea: Let your local outlets know that they should post on the Skate Shops forum information about their stores and the equipment they carry and while their on the site they should read the Vendors forum to catch on to this tidy bit of wisdom which you have dealt upon us.

It would be a huge benefit to the sport if more shops carried a wider variety of products, but (at least for the time being) I don't see it happening. First off, it would require a far more knowledgeable sales staff. How likely is it you're going to get accurate information from some kid who doesn't even know what bearing spacers are (let alone what widths different wheels take)?
And it's not even a question of product availability to the retailers. There are shops that have great selections (I just have to drive at least an hour each way to get to them). All of my local shops just don't want to carry anything outside of the "proven sellers", aka 32x8 popsicles with 55mm wheels. And strangely enough, when the local shops do get an occasional Sector9 complete in, it's usually gone within a few days. But they never reorder immediately, or bring in larger or more varied orders, because "nobody buys those". Meanwhile, they have Element and World Industries decks that have been there for months...
I think the appearance of SolidSkate, Longskate and Poolskater having some sort of monopoly is due to the fact that the rest of the industry has handed it to them. They're providing a service that no one else out there seems to be interested in providing. And if I have to send away for exactly what I want, rather than buying what some kid 1/3 my age tells me I should be riding (because it's what he rides), then so be it. Hats off to the guys who actually give me a choice...

If only there were enough longboarders in my city to support an old guys skate shop! I'd go get a small business loan... call my mom, my brother, and my buddy perry and open one up! But alas, there are just a handful of us up here in the desert... so I do most of my purchasing through the net (I like to use the phone too)
Over the past year or so I have built a pretty good relationship with both longskate and solidskate...
I needed some kryptos to try out on Barrett... very short notice kind of thing (one day) Solidskate Glen hand delivered them to Hamm who brought them to me the next day. Thats great customer service!
Just days before a christmas party I needed a nice shortboard setup to give to my wifes bestfriends kid... Longskate Marc came through for me on very short notice and I was the hero. Another time I needed some other wheels and he hand delivered them to me at a ride we were both attending. Thats great customer service!
I have never done business with poolskater, yet... so I don't have any stories to tell about them (shoot me an e-mail and lets talk!)
If there were a local shop, I'd do a big percentage of my business there... but there's not. Just a small handful of net guys who come through for me when I need them to... and I appericate it.
I'll tell you who else has been coming out to show their support for our sport... kryptonics. They have had a rep at the last three gatherings I have been to (Morro, GMR, Hamm Slam)... and I appericiate that too.
Sure, these guys aren't perfect... Glen's pretty hard to track down if there's any snow in the local mountains. Marc runs out of spacers (much to his embarresment) Krypto doesn't make a wheel that will hold up to three luge runs at barrett...
But the bottom line is that all of these guys have shown something to me that goes beyond money... a commitment to something that I love. So I'll show a commitment to them too. I'll run Power Paws on most of my boards (except the ones that get the exkates or kryptonics) and I'll keep links up to both longskate and solidskate and push business to them when I can.
Lots of small companies have done me right... and I appericiate it and will try to help them out when I can. My two cents (okay maybe a dime) HR
PS Hey cheese eater... I think I figured out who you are... you gave too many hints...

Marc, You know I'm just yanking your chain. I'm obviously taking an innocent question and turning it into an opportunity to give people the impression that if they buy Abec 11 wheels, they will instantly skate better and faster. That may be true but they're probably not going to beat Gary Cross any time soon.
For those who don't know Marc works for Longskate-Power Paw-Fluid and I do the Abec 11-Roughcuts thing, and yet we both live in Huntington Beach, CA and ride together on the SSS Team along with Arab, Chicken and Carrasco. Slalom racing makes for some strange bedfellows indeed.
I've watch Marc go from spectator/photographer to serious contender in only a few months time. Guys like him amaze me. It's really great to see such rapid improvement and I'm stoked to be his teammate in skating, even if he is a rival in product development. It's all good to me. We gotta stick together if we're gonna give the Fat City boyz a run for their money. Imagine how fast Marc would be if he only used...

Hamm, because i don't want to deal with b.s. in the future. i'm not worried about being banned...but...maybe i should since a recent post eluded to me not being able to purchase merchandise from any online dealer. and that type of comment is exactly why i'm posting under a dairy product. it's not like i'm THAT paranoid. Jeez, you don't have to read too many Hardy Boys books to figure out who I am.
would you want to pay for a flight across the country, hotel, and transportation to compete in a "race" sponsored by a company you criticized? (Morro Bay, GGP?) you don't think something could happen with the way an event is timed that it can't be (or hasn't in the past been) 'altered'. we've all heard stories of shady races in luge and slalom races in the past. (again go look at the speedboarding forum)
i'm not clear about your next comment on a slalom organization...but with an 'official' organization there is less chance races would be held favoring or penalizing participants. this doesn't mean you can't have a race without an organization.
now i'm going out to skate. maybe we can call this done. - i don't agree with the concept that I owe a skate company/vendor anything especially when i don't agree with some of their statements - i think people should call companies on posting b.s.
i think i've backed up every one of my comments. if anyone is still unclear just email me. if you think i'm an ass...i don't care...because i am cheese, you are glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you!!! and you can also email.

I know exactly what you're saying Marc. Can you imagine how unstoppable Gary Cross would be if he were to own some Abec 11's? It's frightening just to think about it. If a 40 year old fart like me can hang, imagine what a truly talented skater can do with those babies. It's almost like cheating.

Are you afraid that IF you leave your name your remarks will get you banned from whatever races you are racing in?

At the Dump Road in SLC the other day, I used the 74mm Abec 11 wheel with the 50mm hub in the soft compound for the Giant Slalom "Outlaw Slalom Race". The road was rough (see the Slalom Forum) and required smoothness as well as traction to negociate the hard carving switchbacks. Speed was more important than quickness and the Abec 11's delivered.
I managed to post the fastest qualifying run of the day and the fastest run in the race by using the superior urethane formula to my advantage. All I had to do was ride the board and the rolling speed stayed faster overall. I wound up in Second place when World Champion Gary Cross put down some solid runs and I hit one too many cones. His cummulative times of 48.91 were 0.18 under mine (49.09) and meant that a 0.20 cone penalty was the difference. The wheels were perfect, I was not. (BTW, Congrats to Gary)
Continue to look for great high performance wheels down the road. I'll put every wheel that we make to the test in "real world" racing conditions and everyday riding situations. I won't be happy until we have the best wheel for every type of downhill riding. We demand performance in racing so you can expect quality and value in our products.
You're gonna love these wheels.

so unless you fully intent on continually "attempting" 2 harsh everyone's mellow (mine's fine ~ i just see you expending needless energy in a pursuit that has accomplished it's point)
wouldn't you get tired of someone posting the same review of the same product every other day ~ even if it was clear they were fully stoked out about their viewpoint ~ it just would get a little old... for the most part you're ok in my book just realize we live in a community and it's "all gouda!" ~ i'm out

Is this section for quibbling? Of the last 30 or so posts, only a couple are about what this section is about. I`ve said it before, if you don`t like it here, go skate somewhere else (literally).
Now for what I need to know...
When are the Seimics gonna be available? Where are more Stradas (or those same wheels in another name)? Where is a s-camber I can purchase?
But PLEEEZE, let this section be a place vendors can get news to us without being slammed.
And vendors, don`t respond to the cheezy puffs and soon they`ll be blowing smoke out their arses

Adam, with all due respect...
In response to - "It is you who have missed the point all along, and people like Misterbill, and especially Roy, who have an appreciation of how business works and what's important here."
I am keenly aware of how business works even at this tiny level. I am also aware that any retailer can "bash and whine" about other retailers. I DON'T have to agree with it. I am aware that a retailer can state untrue statements. I DON'T have to agree with it.
If this makes me an 'ass' then so be it...and your statement isn't a surprise coming from someone that runs a website with a Longskate banner on their homepage.
Now as far as the statement: "in due course neither solidskate or poolskater will want to take your money either and you'll be buying your gear at SportMart again. " I'm a consumer. I owe them nothing. As long as they: 1. provide me with products at a fair price, 2. send it in a resonable time, AND 3. publicly present themselves as honest and with some integrity, we will have no problems. And I actually do 90% of my purchasing on ebay.
I think this statement about retailers not selling to me is EXACTLY what I'm against. It seems a lot of people have this mind set that they work SO hard and make SO little money they DESERVE the right to publically operate with unfair business practices. I think that's BS. Do you think it's ok to let the fry guy at McDonald's tell you to 'stop the crybaby bullshit' when you request ketchup for your fries?
Marc, I'm seeing this isn't as much about honesty as it is about not clearing the confusion. Your intial post about supplying more money to manufactures for R&D was unclear. I asked for clarification (not in the best way) and didn't get it.
As far as your statement- "To be honest--IT appears you go to someone elses computer to protect your identity under a fake name" Let me clear up this appearance: I actually have a job with a few computers in my office at work. If one is busy burning a cd or uploading to an FTP site, I will play on another one while waiting. I'm not THAT passionate about all this! I'm actually pretty lazy. Like I said before I'm not stating my real name because I race. If you want to stop sponsoring races until there is an official slalom association I would be happy to give my real name. Obviously you find some validity to my statements or you wouldn't be so focused on my identity. Besides it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who I am. I've already had numerous emails from other skaters agreeing with me.
Adam, thanks again for keeping my posts up.
