Yes - Santa is busy in his workshop as we speak. We'll be working first with the folks that submitted board requests to John Gilmour in June. Look for a posting in the NCDSA Vendor's Corner by end of this week.

antti, excellent idea, buy decks without trying them or knowing their flex characteristics is a real headache for longboarders. Same thing with slalom decks.
Maybe longsk8 or solidsk8 can post pics with a 200lb load in the center of every deck they sell.
Nice to hear that longboarding is spreading to Finland or is that Swami. ;-)

Thanks Ya'll. But are you sure the 8mm work for the "Street Gs 65mm"? It sure looks smaller than that.

Measuring deck stiffness

Would it make sense to try to come up with a universal deck stiffness meassurement method? Maybe something similar to the way the wheel hardness is measured. For example how much the deck bends when a 75kg load is applied to the center of the deck. Any comments? I haven't redden a lot of boards and getting ones hands on a longboard is not very easy here in Finland. This kind of measurement would help a lot when doing on-line shopping.

Matthew, that's what your wheels need. A note to the 'parts guys' in the industry; It's time to step up a bit,and make the pieces that fit available to the buyers. Moreover,it's time also to think of how you might keep the shops involved in the loop.Having worked for a 'hip' skateshop in Va Beach/Richmond that catered to longboarders/surfer/snowboarders,I was astonished to find that the owner did nothing to inform his employees about the products he sold.Hype was all he knew.Product information(pamphlets!)from companies like Powell sold more goods than insights from his staff. If service is to be a part of buying skate gear, then I'd venture to say that the product had better be 100% complete when it gets to the store,'cause the fools selling hype don't know...

I just got some Gravity Street Gs at my local skate shop (Bill's Wheels in Santa Cruz), and was told that Gravity does not have ANY spacers available. Some of us actually like to set up our wheels and bearings as they are designed to be, with bearing spacers. Crazy huh? Any whackos out there know where I can get some spacers for Street Gs? Or at least what the size they are? (looks like about 7 or 8 mm). Thanks, Mathew

Great idea todcar, but this is the mindset the retail outlets would have to take on. Wheels are available to them in any quantity and color combination but they usuaully order in sets of 4 (splitting up their sets is all up to them). I know I can go into my distributor and by wheels one at a time or in sets of 5 but I'm a Knucklehead...

Hey when all of you start cranking out your slalom wheels, please make themm available in sets of TWO! I think you'll sell more inthe long run this way and we riders can get the variety of sizes and hardnesses we desire.

38-40" boards

I wonder why Kona doesn't limit the actual wheelbase?
Anyway, I was searching for a park board in the 38-40" range and found these. Not sure if these meet the 21" pseudo-wheelbase, but I'm sure nothing a drill can't fix:
TVS 38, 39, 40 Tahoe Fusion 39 Comet 40 Freeride poolrider & jake 39 Fibreflex 38 kicktail Afroman Numbchuck
I think there are also similar sizes from Gravity, Sector 9, Dregs, etc.

longboards for competitions...

The only "official" size limit for longboards that I know of is for the Kona Longboard Championships. This calls for a minimum of 38" length, and 21" from inside truck hole to inside truck hole(avoiding the use of the word "wheelbase"). Board companies should make some decks in this size range, with a fish/pig shaped old school flavor, not a stretched-out popsicle stick. Currently, there are hybrids that are smaller than this spec., or big planks that exceed this size. there is a void in the 38/21 size range that needs to be filled. Sector 9 has picked up Todd Johnson (#2 at Kona 2001), they should make a Todd Johnson 38" poolrider model or something. Bulldog and Gravity should stretch their 36" to 38" to meet this market. Comet could do a nice fish shaped 38" park design... my .02 P@io

Stiff Slalom Decks

Comet did a prototype of a narrow 29" deck that was so stiff none of us could ride it effectively. I can jump up and down on the deck and it doesn't budge. AT ALL. I weigh 180. Don also tried that setup and found it much too stiff. The current Stiff Slalom decks from Comet are a good deal more flexy than that board, and guys at 230 are happy with the current Stiff. If you need to find something incredibly stiff, or weigh around 265, this may be the setup for you. Special order decks have been done in ultra-lightweight versions as well. Give Jon a call, or order it through your favorite dealer.

I can most assuredly recommend having the folks at Pumpkin doing a board for you guys. You can custom order it to your own specs. My new Pumpkin Pig is stiff flex and when my brother rides it (he`s 230) the board just flexs past flat on a hard turn. The wide deck at 8.75" also compensates for the tinys feets.
Check out the pics I posted on the decks reveiw page and then contact Chris at....

MITCH T - I agree about plenty of boards being flexy enough. I own a V-12 Slugg & comet 29/med.flex, both of these flexy under me. I also own a Comet33 /stiff flex that I realy have to pump to get to flex. All the above boards are great boards, requiring different foot stances. I would strongly recomend the Comet33 /stiff flex, for anyone 200+ lbs. -JD

The 3-ply Fiberflex Response doesn’t quite go to flat under my 120 pounds. I consider that to be too stiff.

Slalom Conversion Kit

I remember when I started skating, they had Nash conversion kits where they'd sell you the axle and the nuts that would allow you to put decent wheels and loose ball bearings, on your crap Nash board. I was able to put Cadillac wheels on my Nash Goofyfoot. It made a world of difference. So the slalom conversion kit would consist of a set of the soft Indy bushings, and some soft wheels that wouldn't force them to have to buy risers and new hardware. Maybe some 59mm Power Paws or some 59mm Krypto Routes. You could also call this the downhill conversion kit. This could get kids started at a modest cost, then if they like it they can go all the way and get a complete started kit. Announce a slalom contest, give a little demo beforehand, have plenty of kits ready to sell and let the kids sign up and compete.
