No doubt about it, at $50 a set these are a bargain!
(but I'll treasure my "made in Germany" sets all the more)

8mm axle/8mm spacer
On 9/13/2001 marc wrote in from (216.101.nnn.nnn)

I too have owned both versions of the seismic truck. I change truck set-ups and from time to time run a seismic in the front and say and indy in the back. the axle on the indy works fine-5/16 and we all use this size axle with MOST trucks. So how could i possibly have a problem with the current 5/16 seismics. Well I actually don't care quite honestly. Why?, because carving and slalom- which from my understanding is what these trucks are built for- aren't Rocket Science. Slalom and Carving are not even Speed boarding or Luging because the speeds are much slower and risk of personal injury is far less. I like how easily wheels can be changed (which happens about 4x per session) when you have the extra room that a 5/16 axle allows for especially when fumbling with spacers, which is another topic entirely. I also like the 8mm perfect fit, it makes sense and is very solid. I have never felt one time a situation when riding that I can say, "it was because of the axles"-nor have I seen my bearings or wheels wear faster/slower using one or the other. Dan has gotten this truck to us and it is now affordable, I don’t hear anyone saying “what, only $49? Dan! I wanna pay $99 again!!” why is that?
RE 8mm spacers, they are fine (in my opinion) in stradas, gravity, kryptonic and the the other similar cores, again, for slalom. Speed boarding is a whole different subject which I am not referring to now.
Basically, my biggest secret to running cones fast or skating well in general is practice. It's not a magic perfect axle or secret super spacer—though there is nothing wrong with being detailed oriented and wanting perfection—I guess that may make me sloppy in some reader's opinions:)

Seismic
On 9/13/2001 Glen wrote in from (64.171.nnn.nnn)

I've got multiple trucks with both the 8mm and the standard truck axels and I have yet to find a performance difference. My wheels still wear the same, my bearings still wear the same. I actually like the fact that Seismics will lose the hollow axel thing. I've had to pay more attention to the allen bolt thing loosening than I have with locknuts. After my subatance abuse problems in the 70's and early 80's, I don't always remember to check the security of my wheels before riding. The locknuts help me not have to worry about it.
Axel length is another thing, and I'm sure Dan will take care of the problem.

Seismics
On 9/13/2001 Relic wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

While I really liked the 8mm axles, every other truck I use has the 5/16, so yes, I'd like 8mm if possible, but I won't lose any sleep over the current 5/16 size. However, I would encourage Dan to consider increasing the axle length to as wide a pratical to allow 12mm spacers with speed rings, and possibly adding to the standard hanger width with wide washers (like the ones that came with the previous version of the Seismic trucks). I really like these trucks, and it's hard to send them back, and maybe I just a wimp, but I don't want to take the chance of an axle nut falling off while riding because the axle was too short.
BTW Jack, what size spacer were you running in your 110 trucks?

Strokers
On 9/13/2001 Jack wrote in from (216.207.nnn.nnn)

Dear Herbn...please reread my post, it says "the only those things were good for in my opinion".
I tried riding Strokers back in the 70's on a variety of boards and was never really satisified with their performance. I remembered being really stoked when I first saw them in the magazines, I was glad to see innovation. It was great to see someone experimenting with a new steering system that used something besides rubber grommets.
The only place I ever saw Strokers used in a competition setting was on the front of skatecars and on the front of Tommy Ryan's stand-up downhill board.
If you like the way they ride, that's great. Have fun!

What was so it about strokers that gave them such a specific application,"the front of skatecars"or was it just that you did it,so it had to be ok.

No truck manufacturer can offer any guarantees about speed wobbles (an extraordinarily complex phenomenon that even leading professors of mechanical engineering can’t fully explain). Any company that claims to be able to do so - run, don't walk!

G-Truck
On 9/13/2001 Dan / Seismic wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

For anyone unfamiliar with this issue, the G-Truck was a low-cost, stripped-down copy of the patented Seismic technology, made under license in the mid/late 1990s for sale in Europe only. Some inventory is still floating around Europe, but the license was terminated over a year ago. The spring-loaded G-Truck is dead.

Seismic 8mm Axles
On 9/12/2001 Jack wrote in from (64.12.nnn.nnn)

Okay Guys, lighten up and quit whining. Dan has said he is going to fix this so-called problem. I ran a set of Dan's new trucks on the front of my slalom board at the recent DC slalom event...and guess what, I had no idea that the axles weren't 8mm. But then again I didn't measure them before I slapped on my wheels, something I wouldn't ever think of doing. Evidently it didn't make much difference to me, or the guys who finished behind me.
I have known Dan since the Seismic design was just a gleam in his eye (1986). He has spent thousands of dollars not to mention thousands of hours since then bringing this truck to market. And he hasn't made a penny yet. If Dan says he will continue to improve Seismics he will. His trucks (even with the non 8mm axles) are still the most innovative and responsive trucks to come down the pike in years.
Someone mentioned "Strokers", the only those things were good for in my opinion, was using them on the front end of skatecars, which I did on the Vetter Streamliner...2nd place tie at '78 Signal Hill - 59.27mph and 2nd place 1978 Akron CBS Sports Spectacular.
They were definitely a cool looking truck, but that's about it. Heck, even the company that made them couldn't disavow their connection to them fast enough.

8mm
On 9/12/2001 Duane wrote in from (63.31.nnn.nnn)

The last truck that made sense now doesn't make any sense. I should have upped my $100 bid for a set of the "classic" seismics when I had the chance. Now, the only 8mm I know of are the expensive and complex (and heavy) floating axle Randals and Z-roller, I won't call them spin axle since it doesn't spin. Trucks are easily the worst skate product category, I'm routinely disappointed in the design and quality, the best ones I bought recently were 15 years old. Seismics are the only significant innovation in 25 years

Seismic trucks
On 9/12/2001 Dan the Seismic man wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Guys, I'm making inquiries about switching back to true 8mm axles, but PLEASE do not assume that they will be available anytime soon at a cost that any of you will want to pay. For the foreseeable future, ALL Seismic trucks will ship with industry-standard 5/16-inch (7.937mm) axles.

Also, it is absolutely not possible to switch out the wheel axles on Seismic trucks. They are mechanically bonded to the grind strip, so you would have to shatter the hanger body to get the axle assembly out.

I am applying a big dose of tough love to get my factory to switch to longer axles very swiftly.

Any further questions or comments: always feel free to contact me directly.

Dan,

Count me in on the better axles. That`s not much to pay to have the best the product can be.

Also...on my previous post, after re-reading it, it seems more of a jealous rant than what should be posted on that (trucks) forum. I should have emailed you directly rather than post that there. No ill intentions were meant. I probably let my emotions from these past days get away from me. I need to go out and skate more.

If the 8mm axles will be available soon, please let me know as I ordered 2 sets of 110`s from Mark. I`ll cancel 1 for now (if he didn`t already ship them) and get the second set when the new axles are available.

Brady

Herb's Stroker remake
On 9/12/2001 Dan, Head of Seismology wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Herb, you should flow some of the top slalom racers sets of your trucks. It would be healthy competition to see how yours fare against mine in serious racing conditions. Hey, you and I even could even go head-to-head - a friendly test of which truck engineer can best back his work with the moves. We could invite Randal Fuller and others, too...
Will your Stroker remakes be available for purchase anytime soon? Any estimate on retail price? Get 'em out there, bro'!

8mm axles
On 9/12/2001 Lansing wrote in from (24.218.nnn.nnn)

Roger -- There is one other truck which uses 8mm axles: Our custom Z-Roller. Z-Prod makes these puppies special for us, using the precision alloy axles from the Z-Maxi luge trucks combined with the 149mm Z-Roller hangers.

The inner dimension of skateboard bearings is .315", and the Z-Roller axle is .314". According to Chris at Z-Prod, the 5/16" (=.3125") axles that are standard on skateboard trucks actually run anywhere between .306" to .310", so you don't even really know what you're getting even when the axle is "supposedly" 5/16"! Either way, there is slop.
It's always ticked me off when I can jiggle my wheels around even when mounted properly & snugly w/bearing spacers & speed washers, and it's the axle's fault! And of course slop = friction & play = slower speed & shorter bearing life.

And they ship with several extra spacers, brass washers and speed rings so you can "custom fit" it to the wheels you're using (another advantage of the floating axle design).
