This is the second event to take place in Aviemore, the perfect setting offering a friendly community, superb scenery and the awesome Glenmore mountain road. This is a World Championship race all the best riders will be there. There are only 25 entry places left for the Highland Wheels Extreme so its now or never to get your entry for in this years race. This is NOT an IGSA race. This road is not for the faint hearted you will reach speeds of 70mph. We will provide transport from the Hotel in Aviemore to the race road and to the start. Everyone will get 3 days of riding and you won't get kicked out if you have the slowest time you still get to race on Sunday. Pegless luges will race with the standard sleds with booms this is where we find out which is best or not as the case may be. Full rules and specs will be ready in a couple of days.
Leathers and full face helmets are compulsory if you don't have these you can not race. For more info on the race you can download highlights of last year and take a 3d ride down the road. www.Gravitysports.co.uk For those in the UK its worth getting that extra sports insurance cover. I know Chalky would like you to have it. Go to www.SportsCoverDirect.com
Also this year Mark is putting a program together for the race and spectators. What we need from you if you have entered are a few basic details and pictures which you have to e mail Mark.
m.warrender@btoo.com
We have to have this info in the next 14 days or you won't get in. If anyone one wants to advertise in the program e-mail Mark prices start from £25 for 1/4 page.
Name..... Age........ Country... Events Entered....... Injuries......... Words to live by...... (Be polite please!). Sponsors............
I will also need a passport type photo, preferably a head shot(clean pics only) and also picture of you in your leathers (action pic) this will give the spectators an idea of who you are.
If you want to send more info that's fine,I'll see what I can squeeze in.
Cheers dudes,
Chris & MC

CAN YOU TOP THIS?
On Sat. 4/20/02, Guy Morrow of Wild Fro Racing LLC put in a timed run on the Dinosaur Point Road, in Pacheco State Park, CA of 2:59:64.
The previous best timed run was put in by Josh Smith at the 2001 FunDay 7/29/01. His run was timed by Manu and was 3:02.28.
At the same FunDay, Chis McBride (using his GPS) reached a speed of 75.6, if I'm not mistaken. (Chris correct me if I am wrong). Guy's top speed (on odometer was only 72 mph)

If u are aware, EDI is holding the Sandia Downhill Classic in hew mexico on June 22,23rd. If u want the freedom of riding all 14 miles instead of riding 1 mile for the race and want to be able to ride it all day without having to deal with race structure, email me. There is a rider from Delaware flying out in june some time, if u want to schedule a ride for a a few days preferably on weekdays ( sorry for the inconvience) then email me. Denne?, Jason Breault from Delaware says u may be riding with us ans u todl him u may come out to NM with him. Whats the deal on that, do we need to schedule a day to ride or do u guys have tha figured out already. Really looking forward to riding with u deene and anyone who is interestted. Just a short note, the road is 14 miles long, has 117 turns, and an average7-11% grade all the way down plus we have special permission from the state highway dept and sherrifs dept to ride the road whenever we want to as long as your riding with Team Nemesis.

I got to street luge for the first time this weekend. i have played around with buttboarding for some time and gotten speeds into the 40's on very very easy hills and wanted to try the real thing. I happened to find some guys from tulsa oklahoma who luge and they offered to take me with them as they went to ride a little and make plans for this summers race they are organizing. HOLY CRAP!! whata diff. i now know that street luge is more than i ever thought it was and i am hooked worse than i ever thought i could be. I would like to add a quick thank you to Dave and Rusty from F6 racing for the wonderfull experiance.

Combined results of bbs & email survey "Is there Interest in Time Trial Event(s) @ Dinosaur Pooint?"
I wish to thank all who took the time to respond and for the valuable suggestions that were made.
The results listed below are a combination of "unique" responses from the bbs survey and the email survey to the question "Is there any interest in Time Trial Event(s) at Dinosaur Point?"
Total unique responses 36
yes.........29 no.......... 2 maybe....... 1 other....... 4 total 36
Even though over 80% of respondents wish this type of event(s), the number does not justify a commitment on Wild Fro Racing LLC part to put on this type of program without further consideration.
Thank you again.

Results from "Is There Interest in Time Trials @ Dinosaur Point" survey on bbs ended 3/25/02
First thanks to all of you that responed.
We received 10 "yes", and one "maybe". there were no "no" responses.
The number of replys, even though overwellingly "yes" is not a strong enough response to allow us to commit to "Time Trial" event(s) at Dinosaur Point.
In the near future we will "test the waters" again.
Thank you for your replys and comments.

HC, sorry for not posting a reply sooner. the longest run is 9 miles long. My brother, Darren Lott and I have done 7 miles of it (necks got alittle worn out)speeds are over 70mph on my buttboard and my brother has gone almost 80mph. But the average is about 3-5 miles for most of the good roads.

Is there interest in "Time Trial" Event(s) @ Dinosaur Point?
We now have the ability to time runs consistently on the Dinosaur Point Road.
That being the case I need to have feed back from riders as to their committment to competing in "Time Trial" event(s) comparable to the format that is used in ice luge, bobsled and skeleton in the Olympics. One rider against the "hill", with multiple runs (possibly 2-4) added together with the lowest combined time of the multiple runs ranked to determine placement.
Possible Classes: Luge (pegged or pegless) Classic Luge (buttboard) Standup (rider must demonstrate ability to stop) Inline (rider must demostrate ability to stop) Gravity Bike
Depending upon rider committment possibly having pro and amature or "rookie" classes
Purse to be determined based upon a percentage of the total entry fees for a discipline.
Please understand that this is a "rough" concept.
What is needed at this time is knowledge as to your committment to this type of format.
Time is of the essence!!!! I will need all responses no later than 7:00am Monday 3/25/02.
Basically we need a "yes" or "no" response.
Imput as to specifics would be appreciated, but the "yes" or "no" committment is what will be the determining factor.
Postings are helpful, direct email to us would be most beneficial.
I will not be able to answer email individually, but will send a "bulk" email to all and will post a copy to the bbs.
Riders that had Excite@home please let me have your new email address.
Thanks,
Steve Pearl Wild Fro Racing LLC

We are riding some local hill tomorrow. It's going to be 74 and partly cloudy..so a good day for it. The hills here are easy if you want to give it a try. Andy Moser (virginia) will be there and maybe Eric from Deleware... I live 18 miles south of Washington DC in Waldorf. Give me a shout tonight if you are up for it..

Hey PS, hope the knee heals up quick. Yeah, I'm happy just to try and luge at this point.
We live about a mile or so from where the X-Games luge run was in San Francisco. Wife and I went down there and watched the races. She said I could do that since I used to ski race. Wasn't so sure myself. Tried it and she was right! By then it was too late for her to backpedal and I got a luge. Now she says, "What was I thinking when I told you that?" ;-)
That SF course mainly boiled down to the big turn, but it was pretty entertaining as there were lots of different lines to take through it: hold a tight line, late apex, late braking. Made for slides and passes and some good racing.
Have gone 50+ in a straight line a few times, but not much talent to do that. Gotta learn to pick braking points, turn, slide, etc. Riding the learning curve should be fun for a long time.
Yeah, on the one hand there's plenty of room for improvement in putting on races and getting TV coverage. On the other hand, I've helped out at rock climbing competitions, bicycle races, etc. and there's a ton of work to make events happen. In more "fringe" sports, there's less infrastructure (read "organization") and less money.
The Donner Summit road that was raced a while back is a great road. So there are some long hills out there. The question is if they can get enough hay bales and cameras to run it top to bottom. If so, it'd be a great show. Even better is that it looks like a great road to luge! Lotsa turns, good pavement, and scenic locale.
The sport needs some heros for the kids to follow, and there's at least a few characters out there that people recognize. Agree things should be set up to make more people try racing tho, rather than keeping it to an inner clique. Haven't looked into the racing aspect, so don't know if the "inner circle" thing is an issue. If so, that means there could be multiple sanctioning organizations if groups that feel excluded start their own. Ultimately, you have a bunch of fiefdoms instead of a kingdom. Or at least competing national level organizations. For large sports, this can work (e.g. world superbike and GP series for motorcycling; Cart and F1 for cars). But for smaller sports it has the potential to cause problems. Might make it tricker for sponsors to figure out which horse to bet on when picking a race series to present and televise.
What you want is grass-roots groups for local racing, which feed into the national level, where those at the top compete internationally. If things are small enough, then everyone gets to have a shot at the international events (e.g. qualifier at event). If things are big, like the Tour de France, then you can't have 50,000 people show up who want to try and qualify. You're in it cuz you worked your way up the ranks of local/national/international cycling race structure.
Ah well, I could go on for a few more pages. It's cool there are races out there at all. Putting on events ain't easy. But if the sport is gonna grow, there are other sports out there with organizations and race series to emulate. Comes down to whether TV people will see luging as a scary sideshow or an exciting race series. Probably easier to pitch it to the TV execs as a side show in the short term. In the long run, the novelty will wear off, so then pitching it as a race series will have more of a future.
From what I've heard and read, Red Bull puts on great events. Why? In part because they have and spend the money to put on a great show. Lugers don't have those kinda bucks, so corporate sponsors will be where the big money comes from to put on races and bring money into the sport. TV coverage goes along with that.
Be careful what you wish for tho, as corporate sponsorship ain't free. There will be strings attached. ;-)

Yup,Tony, you're right about trying to make this sport 'show' better on the tube.Coverage has been very weakly put together, with the courses, and filming done so that the veiwer gets a 'tidy' picture, and no one goes very fast for very long.Small hills are needed for filming, because cameramen will only cover so much area in one sweep.Small hills don't allow for switching up tactics,or passing,or speed checks/speed gains,so the event looks like a drag race, not the kinda race you'd want if you're one of the racers. The X-Games,while they were in San Fransisco, came close to putting on a good show for luging. The camera work was better, and on-sled filming became something that gave the audience a fresh perspective of what kind of jostling can and does occur in a tight race. The last X-Games was just done badly, and I think that racing suffered from that event's presentation.I don't know if Biker and clan will ever get the point of truly accepting a format that encourages teams to play off one another, but IF that occurs, say in the next two-three seasons,we could see a competition series that sets itself up with a built-in 'draw'-My team is faster than your team, just like real racing in motorsports. But will the boys ever back off enough to allow for others to share in the glory? Or will this 'sport' just become another {Yawn} X-treme has been? Meanwhile, keep on riding, and practicing. It may yet be a sport that can be joined in on without having to 'be one of the guys' or have to play suck-it-up politics to participate in.Heck,we might even have races on decent hills that get decent TV coverage.Me,I'm out of the game,at least until my knee lets me put on the brakes well enough to compete, but I'm building yet another sled(this time from Stainless Steel)just in case I can get into the fray at a later date. My woodie still rolls along just fine, even after two decades. This kind of fun tends to get a grip on you. Enjoy it,if not to race,at least to go faster next run..
