M-80 vs Cherry Bomb

I went riding at GMR today with Bob Pererya and Sean Mallard. Sean designed the Cherry Bomb and Bob the M-80. Both are good wheels, but differ slightly. The Cherry Bomb shares the Turbo hub and is 82mm, while the M-80 has a larger hub and is wider to make up for the lack of urethane. On a luge, the m-80s handled better, they were less likely to break into a slide and feel harder. The cherry bomb is a little more gushy and feels softer. The difference between the two is quite small and there hasn't been a whole lot of feedback between the two as to which is better. I would say they both are very similar and would use the m80s for the smooth or more technical and the cherry bombs for the rougher or less technical. Both Sean and Bob speak highly of both wheels. I do know Rick Kludy has been racing on the m-80s for stand up this last year, i wonder what Rick has to say on them.

I got to see a prototype of the kwiksplit system when I bought a 13 ply birch board from Kurt to make a longboard. It's a small strut like one that holds a car hatch up. he said there would be no charge in the working version. it attaches to the deck and the kwiklsplit devices. Those things actually work! The ride is pretty amazing.

59mm 78a Kryptonics Route Wheels

I told my son I would buy some softer wheels for his board, so he could cruise rougher terrain with me, when I go longboarding. My search turned these up. He loves em, he skates a lot more now than he did with the 97a's he had on his board. They are offset wheels, I got them in black to match his krypto jive series board and to stay with the kryptonics theme, but they work great, super smooth. I bought mine from Fogdog sports.

I talked with Rick (owner of Xtreme Wheelz, very cool guy) this afternoon about some wobble in the Smoke Bombs. I did not have to justify that it was a problem, his exact words where "people trust their lives on their wheels". This guy is on it and is committed to high speed wheels with strong quality controls in place, exact alignments, clean/consistent x-ray, - he just returned from the factory doing this for the Smoke Bomb. My set of smokes will be exchanged for a new generation of quality. I am very impressed, a manufacture that is very serious about high speed skateboard/luge wheels with a real commitment to consistent quality.
I really appreciate companies like Xtreme, (and Randall, and Seismic, etc) ...their innovations and sincerity. It's only getting better and better.
Roger
btw: I am keep the set of 8-balls, a slight wobble make no difference - it's profile is round!

Scott, Although I haven't checked out the new formula yet, I do have much experience with the older versions of the Bombers. If anything, the 85a's are more slippery than the 90a's. As would be expected, the 85a's give a smoother ride since they are softer, but the 95a's are gripper than the 90a's which are grippier than the 85a's. The harder ones slide smoother, but the softer ones slide easier and farther. For some reason, it's kinda backwards from other wheels. You would think the softer ones would be grippier. This is how I view the different hardnesses of the Bombers: 95a is for parks and pools, 90a is for smooth streets and ditches, and 85a is for rough streets. The best all around being the 90a.

Lono,
Your right on the money, at the speed record attempt, many of the riders were placing their wheels in coolers, although the riders that did so didn't get the record.

Just wondering if anyone knows if heat (from friction) affects the traction of a wheel. I would think it would increase the traction.

nugwop, take a look at their website, the S/S has a curved profile and does not have a larger contact (until it worn/lathed down), a S/S smoke would require a new mold, and am told the Smoke Bomb has the best grip when riding on good road conditions. My Smoke Bombs just arrived and will be posting more details next week - curiously they are exactly the same size as Cherry Bombs ;)

Hyoper strads come in 4 different colors and hardnesses. 78a yellow, 84a Purple, 88a Green, 92a Orange.
They come in 2 sizes 62mm and 66 mm. The 62 mm x 41mm wheels have the name printed in black ink on the outside lip of the wheel and have a large ventiulated core with many small poen refill sized holes around the perimeter. The 66 mm wheel is 40mm wide and has the same core but with indented letttering onthe sidewall of the outside of the wheels.
The most desireable are the yellows and greens. The purples weren't very good.
Post these for sale on teh slalom site and they should sell quickly.

S/S have bigger contact surface, and the Smokebombs got stickyer rubber, so what wheel got the best grip, Have anyone compared them, And will anyone help me influence the extreme folks to make a S/S Smokebomb, they already got the mold and the rubber, so why not.

Hey SXE Phil, Where can/did you find those smaller softer Bones wheels? I found some of the Bat Wings at www.eastcoastskates.com, but they were only in 90a (which isn't that bad). Also, it looks like the 95a Bombers are back, but only in 60mm.

Bones makes a couple of wheels that are under 59mm and are soft. They have the bat wings cruiser which is 56mm/80a, and they have the powell skull&swords which is 58mm/85a. Good luck.

I called Xtreme Wheelz to find out more about the Smoke Bombs, it's profile is flat and the rubber is much softer/stickier than their other wheelz. Intended purpose is for maximum traction and it might be the fastest wheels through tight turns. I'll still get a set of Summit Slicks when they become available in the US, but I'm not waiting any longer for sticky rubber!
I also asked them about a rain tire, something like the Smoke Bombs but with rain tread. They indicated that they had not thought of it, mostly because the XT works very well on wet roads. And the tread on the new "XT II Xterminator" does even a better of expelling water as well as longer life.
A set of Smoke Bombs should arrive in time for a GS course this Sunday at the Dump Rd. and will more details after I actually have ridden them.
Roger
Nugwop, get in contact with them, they are great people and I am sure they will sell without bearings or hardware. The S/S are much larger (99.5mm) than the 8 Balls (88mm) and the smoke bombs (82mm). Ed, www.xtremewheelz.com is listed in NCDSA Links page.

Ed, Power Paw makes 59mm 78a offset wheels in white or clear called Cyclotrons. You can order them at www.longskate.com, but they are on sale for like 8 bucks less at www.flexdex.com. Longskate only has the white but Flexdex has the white and clear.
