wheels in general
On 1/11/2000 juno wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Question.... for downhill skating is it better to have your wheels loose or tight? Does either practice have any defining qualities or facilities? if somebody could resolve this dispute between myself and a mate I'd be most grateful
He always has 'em tight so they hardly make two rotations when you spin 'em by hand and I prefer mine free to roll any opinions appreciated.
cheers

oakstreet skateboard
On 1/10/2000 Speedster wrote in from (209.66.nnn.nnn)

I believe that the oakstreet was one of the best downhill skates ever made. The solid oak as the deck provides for a nice stable deck and the unique pieces of metal on the noes and tail make the board work. The metal is on the bottom side of the deck where the trucks connect so the board is really close to the ground. I've never riden a board that turns so quick. Some company should manufacture them.

76 mm wheels and larger?
On 1/10/2000 THE FUZZ wrote in from (193.62.nnn.nnn)

Greetings...
You reckon that you can get wheel bite with the 76mm (78A) S9 wheel? I don't, but I'm trying to track down other LARGE wheels (various durometers) for research. Who else makes LARGE wheels (forget Gravity 73mm or smaller - Gravity too sketchy, much coning on slides), want large, fast, non-sketchy rubber.
Wheel bite may be a problem on HUGE wheels, but have access to workshop where I've produced pairs of very professional (if I say so myself) risers, fat, angled, etc. wheel bite not really a problem. Also currently producing a 36mm banana-style board, wide trucks, 70mm Krypto blues...deck made from hardwood (variations made with plywood, marine-ply, 8-ply, maple, etc). Varying combinations of flexes and short deck size work a treat with slidey Krypto rubber.
Old-skoolerama pool board. May need tackier rubber though?

S9
On 1/9/2000 Dux wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

All this petty bickering worries me. I was a custom longboard manufacturer in the UK some time ago and produced quality custom boards until about 2 yrs ago, when the market became flooded by inferior cheap crap.
All this being said, I remember the appearence of Sector 9 over here and let's say, at first the boards were nothing special in my opinion, infact I found them rather lacking in style and finish compared to other brands, but this was forgiven as we were all happy to join in and they were only just getting started. Now the boards they produce are fine and I think that is fair reccomendation coming from a man with 20 years shaping experience of all types of board.
But they must remeber that noone is above getting some stick for being anal, and noone is that cool and removed from it all to be able to tolerate the gripes of the punters.
Show some good grace and be big enough to take it on the chin.

sector 9 , 76mm wheel
On 1/7/2000 hc in san jose wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

hi all, i bought a set of these wheels at gosk8 in san jose and being riding them for a couple of weeks. my previous wheels were krypto route 65's and classiK 70's. the bigger size is great for rough surfaces. however the bigger wheel makes it slow to accelerate which you can feel on the flats. the s9-76 also felt softer (lower rebound), and sticker than krypto's. I like the stickiness for downhill, but the low rebound makes it slow on the flats.

I am a bit concern about wheelbite,(hitting the limit in wheel size) although i am a pretty light guy riding a libtech with r2's.

any longbrder in sj? email me.

Eggman,

I never said I don't like Sector 9 or that they do nothing for the sport. I said i am not happy with their boards (which is a personal thing) and i wished they would do more for the sport. I will hand them this, i have heard a lot of complaints about there videos, and if you check out the reviews on their new video big stick, people were stoked. I personally have never seen it, so i have no opinion.

S9 76er's
On 1/4/2000 eggman wrote in from (156.39.nnn.nnn)

Wow. Go offline for a couple of weeks and look at what you miss! Anyway, after all was said and done, what is the deal with the new Sector 9 76mm wheels? Has anybody tried them? You guys started to talk about them, untill you got all distracted... So, what is the deal? Thumbs up or thumbs down. I think they would be cool, jus cuz of the size...

Anyway, I ride a pair of Aluminators. They are real good. Grippy, smooth and badass looking.

As far as DT's comment (what up DT!) Nobody likes microsoft either, but what are you gonna do? I like S9, and not just because they gave me that free t-shirt. (well, maybe I liked them a little more after that :-)

Anyway, who has ridden the 79mm wheels?
Later late.

Re Drew Is it possible that you're not riding more aggressively than you were a year ago, your last wheels had a nice long break in period, got rounded over, lost some grip so they lasted through some abusive riding, the new wheels got shredded on right away,so they died early, try doing some easy rides on a new set of wheels before rippin into them.

On 1/3/2000 Drew wrote in from (169.233.nnn.nnn)

I had a set of these wheels (70mm centerset plastic hub, clear urithane wheel, I think 78duro), I think they are called labedas.
At anyrate, the ride is really nice on them, smooth nice controled drift in carves, generaly a good feeling wheel. I had a set that lasted me aproximatly a year, and then without warning a massive chunk tears out of one wheel while I am on a fast hill.
I go back to the shop where I got them (purple skunk, good place), look at buying a replacement wheel, and then end up just buying a new set of the same wheels. The new set cracks on the first day riding them, but they are still ridable.
Done some slides on them and now they look like they will break on they next big hill.
At anyrate, the durability on these does not impress me.

Well. I woke up on new years and all the controversy on this page gave me such a horribly negitive vibe about longboarding in general, and that made me sick. Anyway to make a longstory boring i talked to Corpoman today and we smoothed some stuff out, and everything is peachy I suppose. He seemed cool about the whole thing, and we came to the conclusion that all this bull$hit over a seven dollar wheel is just retarded. So all the wounds are healed and all that good stuff. And in closing I would say that i agree wiht Manu wholeheartedley, we should stick to skating and not politics.
Manu, email me if you could i would appreciate the chance of taking you up on your offer( if that is still straight of course.)
Later all

update: Kryptonics quality
On 1/1/2000 jeff wrote in from (209.254.nnn.nnn)

I wrote a message earlier about my 70mm/78A Krypto Hawaii Ks with the wobbles. Well I bought a new set and they roll perfectly, I guess I just got a bad set. I also have a set of 68mm/85A Powell Bombers, and I prefer those over the Kryptos. Both sets are similar in size and profiles, but the Kryptos are softer and have the offset core. I don't think I like the offset core design. They increase the riding width, and the outside edges flex a lot. I lose more speed when carving on the Kryptos partially because they are softer, but I'd bet if their cores were centered they would be faster.

Just stop !
On 1/1/2000 MANU wrote in from (164.138.nnn.nnn)

Hey guys,
i'd like you to stop talking about S9, may i remember you
we are on the ncdsa wheel page ! So lets talk about wheels.
It was the case about sean's wheel, and now we're doing politic.
Sure, somehow good things are told, but it's not the place.
And just a detail for those who believe that S9 is a big monster
company, just go to see them, they are not so big than you can
imagine, it's a bunch of friends who are trying to do their job
(and their passion )the best way they can...Obviously nobody's
perfect and sometimes some little mistakes happens...As it happens to anyone.
My massage for this new year is a message of peace, so let's go riding,
we're better on our boards than in politics !

S9
On 12/31/1999 DT wrote in from (209.223.nnn.nnn)

I somehow find it hard to believe, in fact i DOUBT, that they are the biggest contributer to skate, surf, and snowboard contests. I've lived on the North Shore and So Cal. I've been to hundreds of shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, windsurfing, and bodysurfing contests including the Triple Crown, us open, etc. and i have rarely seen sector 9. except for the occasional sticker on a board. I have never been to a snowboard contest, but have watched many on tv and have never seen them on tv, but it doesnt mean they're not there. Although one would think that if sector 9 contrbutes soo much to snowbarding, you would see it on tv. In fact thats the reason why sector 9 puts so much more money into their riders who surf and snowboard, Its a form of advertising. Just look at surfing, they have tons of big time riders who wear their label, but that doesn't mean they put alot into the surf industry. I use to work in the surf industry and i know how it works.

now to skaing, YES, SECTOR 9 IS THE MOST PROMINENT AND LARGEST SKATEBOARD COMPANY. I AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT,
but i would think they would contribute a little more, (I feel they put more into surf and snow because they want to expand their customers, which equals more money, they dont need to put as much into skate because they have already established their image. I think they should. THIS IS MY POINT) How much money did they give to E.D.I. or other skating oranizations? I could be wrong, but right now i don't feel that way. if you were to show me wrong, i would openly tell everyone how i was wrong, and swallow my pride.
i can do that.
in fact prove me wrong, because myself and others would be more stoked to shed our "ignorance" and i would be more likely to buy something by sector 9

no onto charitable oranizations, i have three words for you
TAX RIGHT OFF
big companies do this all the time, it profits both sides, therefore its not giving, but rather trading. Gotcha/MCD just bought a $10 million dollar building for their website for two months, they are going to give it to a local church. i know alot of these guys and they are nowhere near religious.

I am glad for you, that you will always ride their products.
But i only ride quality boards. I have owned sector 9 boards and now i am selling them.

These are my opinions, i'm not a sector 9 "hater" i just feel that they should do more.

My 2cents worth,
Chief Niner, Steve I used to be your co. rep way back in the day and we sold your co. some of those wheels ( you want to remane nameless about), just to spark your memory...

2nd. Sean
I would agree that its the shops responsibility to take care of his customer not s9 (maybe just maybe if your deck had a problem)
I would say if you bought it from s9 site then sure fix it, but give us all a break, why would you wait months for a wheel or even a set, spend the $30 bucks at another store that wants your business and don't cry so hard, stuff happens
the wheel blowing may not have been a defect, what did you skate over? it happens, you spend $2500 on a trick bike and ride it 1mi. then get a flat, you don't go crying about it, just fix it then move on, if your really that Poor then send me your address and I'll send you a set of wheels, but if they don't work don't come crying and bad mouthing my co. or anyone elses, if you feel the need to F&*k with someone than talk sh*T about the skate shop that left you out in the Cold. Not Sector 9

You've got to be kidding...Sector 9 is the most prominent
longboard skate manufacturer and biggest contributor to
skate, surf and snowboarding contests as well as other
charitable organizations...They have personally gone out
of their way to help me with contributions to my class and
school and are always open to hear from anyone and everyone
with a worthy cause....I think it's ridiculous what you've
said about them not putting back into the sport...If anything
they are the reason that the whole longboard revolution has
gotten to where it is today...I will always ride Sector 9
skateboards and am stoked to support a company who is always
giving to kids and schools as well as pros...Later all.

melting cores
On 12/31/1999 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

It seems unlikely that a core would melt from rolling straight regardless of how fast you went. A new wheel has a harder grip /more friction=heat . Secondly ,contrary to certain condom commercials, urithane is not a good heat conductor(hence aluminators) so smaller thinner coned wheels hold less heat,if it is bearing heat you're talking about, to me the major source of heat in skateboard wheels is heat from lateral friction. Lastly and one last possible source bearing heat could be the combination of traction and leverage to sideload and twist the bearing while its rolling is much greater when a wheel is new and big and unconed.
