Sandboarding a... success? I was almost sure my home made boards wouldn't work at all, but I took them out to a local sand quarry and, to my amazement, worked really well! We even made a small jump out of sand there, we'll go back and make a jump out of potato bags filled with sand and such. Falling on cold, wet, packed sand is much more painful than one would think!
I'll get some photos of my boards and our sand quarry "playground" within the next few days, hopefully it won't rain tomorrow.
For the record: I found that riding dry formica instead of waxed formica made the ride a lot faster. Maybe it's the type of sand I'm riding, or maybe it's because I was using candle wax instead of Dr. dune's speed wax. Either way it was a blast :)

Thanks for all your help. I'm extremely happy with my Ocean Culture board, though. I don't know if it was just the sand or what, but I like the Ocean Culture board a lot better than the Raptor. One big minus about the Raptor is the foot straps, I can't seem to loosen them and when we were done sandboarding, my feet were all bloody. But the Ocean Culture board has really comfortable straps, and that was a big buying influence for me.
I just went sandboarding with a friend yesterday who just bought a Venomous Sport at the Sandmaster Park. We just went to our local sand dunes an it was pretty cool. Where there was grass, the wind would blow away the sand in front of it and leave a bunch of sand in the back. I had a great time jumping them, even if you only get a couple feet of air.

Ocean Culture and Venomous both make excellent boards. To compare a Raptor with a Free Carve or Jump Board is like comparing a spoon with a fork ( you wouldn't eat soup with a fork or steak with a spoon ). They are both perfect for their intended application. Another may say that chop sticks are better. But the point is, It all depends on what you're eating. Fortunately, there are now enough sandboard makers to give the consumer a nice variety.
The best way to determine which board is best for you and your type of riding is to visit Sand Master Park and rent a board. There you can try every manufacturers boards from around the world for one price all in one day. By choosing the right board for your style, you won't have to eat peas with chop sticks! Follow?

Now I'm riding the Raptor bout every day and I can see that it is way faster than my old Ocean Culture board. I can turn tighter and carve deeper than I ever could before. I don't care what any body says. RAPTORS RULE!

Raptors are a totally different board design tho - one directional and stiffer... less performance than an Ocean Culture, you must've landed wrong or lucked out to bust 2 of 'em!

I busted 2 ocean culture boards doing jumps they are made out of pine. I got a Venomous Raptor after that and have been riding it for 2 years with no problems. Raptors are made out of much harder wood so take a lot more punishment.

Hi, I've got about 200 dollars and want to buy a decent sandboard. I want something thats pretty fast and is gonna last a long time, something thats gonna with hold grinds and jumps. I've tried the Venomous Raptor and thought it was pretty good, but there are some other sandboards I haven't tried yet, like the Ocean Culture FreeCarve. Or I could just go to the sports shop and buy a used snowboard for about $50. Which board is the best for me?

Forget the grip tap. The friction of the sand is too great to allow you to stay on the board. It will take the board out from under you with out some kind of foot strap system.

Hello all, I'm posting to try and keep this board fairly active :). I have almost completed my sandboard, all that is left is painting it and varnishing it. I'm planning to paint a map of the world on the top, with silver water and navy blue continents. I'm also hoping to order some Dr. Dune speed wax too.
Also, how was the Sand Master Jam Dr. Dune? Will there be an update on www.sandboard.com about it? Sounds like it would have been a lot of fun.
I am also in the process of converting my old skateboard into a sandboard by glueing on some formica. I think I'll try this one without any bindings, just the grip tape that came with the skateboard hehe.

Hi everyone, we are planning to go to the dunes in Yuma, AZ this sunday. I have been calling every sport rental shop in Tucson for sandboards but some of them haven't even heard about the type. Please write me any suggestions where to find any rental sandboards. I just want to try it out for one day, if I enjoy it I might build my own.

The formica needs to be smooth. if its that slightly rough stuff its not going to slide very well. You could try sanding that rough stuff down a bit before you ride on it. That might work, but you need to get it nice and smooth. Just remember not to sand it too much or you'll go right through the base. The formica isn't all that thick.

Hey sandboarders..
I'm looking for advice. I'm making my own sandboard, using Doc's informative recipe. Yesterday, I went to Home Depot and got some dinged up Formica (but definitely useable) for cheap for my base.
I didn't really even notice that the Formica was kind of coarse. It's definitely not glossy. Well, coarse isn't the best word to describe it. The Formica is hard and pretty smooth, but it's just not like super-smooth. Will it still work, or should I go out and get myself the glossiest available?

Hey I am making a sandboard and am hoping to get out on it relatively soon! Thing is I live in Ottawa Canada so there's absolutely no dunes around here. But snowboarding is pretty good.
Anyways, a question about Formica: Am I the only one who finds it is rediculously expensive? At home depot a fairly large sheet is sold for 38 dollars canadian. I found some no-name brand Formica-like base for 2.98 so I went with that instead :P. Thing is the sheets are only 120 cm long and my board is a whopping 150 cm (I hope it's not too long for sandboarding). So there's going to be a slit in the base, but I think a heat gun, wax and some epoxy and wood glue should fix it up nicely.
Anyways I had to post my excitement for the sport, and I haven't even been out once yet! A group of friends and I might head out to Oregon Sand Master Park this summer for a road trip to try out real sandboarding.
Oh and please feel free to contact me about sandboarding, cuz none of my friends ever speak of it, or have ever heard of it.
