I still have a never-used Mullen SMA deck (only has old skool truck hole pattern) that someone gave me years ago. As I'm currently getting a new setup (another longboard), I'm also getting griptape and skidplates to fit the Mullen deck. My old freestyle deck is so beaten to heck, but the trucks and wheels are still in working order, so soon I'll be setting up the deck, adding the trucks and wheels and hopefully getting back to some freestyle myself.
I know I still got it...I just have to polish off the rusty spots!

struck up a conversation with a guy named Alan Benson - an old Atlanta freestyler from back in the Progressive Skateboards days
he's back on a board!

I think that maybee the rebirth of freestyle might have a few changes to keep it from being catagorized as a weak event. One thing about music added to the routines is that some skaters pick (weak)tunes to skate to, And thats all it takes for it to be slammed. Hows about adapting to newer ideas,Mixing in a DJ contest at the same time! They could mix while everybody skates, I also think that routines should go back to oldschool judging- a routine would be more complete- Handstands, rotations, footwork, balance(wheelies)fl iptricks and movement not standing still in one area to long.Could you imagine if the freestyle comunity merged events with brakedancers-there would be larger crowds

A demo at the CyPress awards in Leipzig, Germany
Last week end Ullrich and I did a demo at a video games convention in Leipzig; East Germany. The stage was a 70‘s living room scenery with a slow PVC carpet. We knew what to expect and blew everyone away; the audience was stoked as were we and the organizers. More demos to come hopefully; a chance to run a Flatland Freestyle contest at one of the other events that they organize, made this demo so important for our Freestyle mission. I was told that some spectators talked about the event the next day again.. Check out a part of our demo at http://home.arcor.de/skateyoyo/Clips/Cypress_Show2_31082002.wmv

I am not going to blast you Cknuck, I want this to be an open discussion and get everything out on the table. I know what you mean when it comes to the bigger events I mentioned not being run well. I have seen that way to much as well, however if we control what we do and run it in a professional manner not only will the professionalism be noticed but they (spectators/possibly some industry guys) will remember what we did. At the Franklin Institute demo a few weeks back at the X Games we kept hearing: "Wow you guys really know how to put on a show" "What your not all Pro?' "I enjoyed watching you guys because you kept it moving, landed like everything, and got the crowd involved" Your time on the floor I didn't want to stop it went to quick, I want to see more!" Everywhere we went it was the same. The reason I think this happened is because we had a plan, a great DJ, and someone who skates on the Mic (Mike Foster and I) and we would take turns MCing and skating keepin it Fresh with a new guy out there. We also wrote Bios of everyone skating so when they took the floor each time the crowd found out something new about the skater and they could relate to at least one of the riders. I.E. JJ Odonnel, West Chester Pa. (all that was said in the first run and the run was short and sweet as everyones first one was as an introduction) second time JJ went out "JJ is known for his rail flip variations (reacted to what I saw and explained it in Laymans terms) Third time "When he is not skating JJ is a Nurse by trade, any medical worker out there? and so on little by little they got to know the riders and got to see a piece of our world. By the way JJ had a section at one time of nurses who cheered him on it was pretty cool. Although everyone kept asking me about "the Mailman" Jon Jage he was a favorite for sure. In addition we added a bit of triva to it and gave away T'shirts ect for guessing the right answer. Its little things that add up to make a show and thats what I found people want is to have a good showing and be entertained, we do that we will shine and the skating does the rest. JJ an I demoed at the venue of the X Games and the two of us shined, JJ,Terry Synnott, and Joe Humeres where asked to stop skating at the City Hall event because the crowd was paying more attention to them then the Street Comp. All it takes is getting riders the time and the space, MCing and it helps when you have a DJ like mine that can set the pace/mood and keep it flowing without missing a beat, and just a simple plan that everyone can understand and then just do it!

Yep, Gary that might be the one with the Peanut butter jar on it somewhere. I think it was actually kind of concaved. I'll chech it out in the basement. Although it would be much smaller now. It became a mini in 87 for my then 5 year old.
A.J. you're right about the professionalism of the demo. Just remember if you're trying to hook into doing a demo as part of one of these events REMEMBER they don't run most of these events that well. hold it, before you blast at me.
Take a look at skating they don't want (the industry) the kids to learn respect and such. There are a lot of good peolpe in sk8ting who have there hands tied by the guys who really run the show.
There are some companies and organisers that are much better then others and do care. Anarchy is an unfortunate part of the success of sk8ting.
Well go ahead.

BODEGA BULL GETS BULLISH ON FREESTYLE PROMOTION
Its come to my attention in the past few months that there is a need for tighter and more focused organization of events ie. Competition/Demos/ Promotions. On the one hand there are more events to partisipate, equipment is being made and improved once again, and wherever any of us go we usually get the most attention from onlookers ect. So whats the problem? The cons to all these pros, deals with promotion for events(advertising on more than just the forum), time table of promotions and sometimes conflicting event/personal schedules, travel expenses, event markets(locale), sensless bickering/politics, the same guys showing up to major events, promoters not communicating/consulting with one another, etc. Freestyle has come a long way in two years and its been enough time see what works what doesn't and what can be improved. Its a never ending process and we all need to refine some rough spots to make this effort a smooth running machine. A more businessman approach is needed. Is there an easy solution? No of course not, anything worth doing is going to have challanges otherwise its not worth doing, so what can be done? I believe it has got to be a co-operative movement and requires input and innititive on everyones part. Meaning that if one of us is in a market(European,N.American,S.American,Asian ect) and that area has potonetial or already has big exposure events ie. Scandinavian Open,Mystic Cup, Slam City Jam, Tampa Am/Pro, Triple Crown, XGames we should see how we can be apart of those events not only to gain exposure but to improve/add value to them. Other high exposure events would include tours such as Beast of the East,Warp Tour,Gigantic Skatetour, various team tours. This innitiative will gain exposure and although would be nice initially doesn't reqire many of us initially to get our foot in the door the skating is what does the talking so higher performing athletes definatley need to skate at such events and its up to all of us to formulate the organizing of our part (don't expect any help initially from these big promotions other than time being proactive is the best way to make sure things are done and shows we are legitimate) Other events will come up through out the year(s) but a bit more of discretion should be implemented. I.E. Major Competitions held in Major cities. In discusiions with other riders Philadlephia, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, LA, would be a good start for Major comps, because they are bigger markets that will filter into the smaller markets. Possibly 3-4 major comps a year that way there is a few months inbetween for people to schedule and inbetween events do the tour stops in your area or around your area, keeps you performing sharp, and helps the filtering process. There are possibilies lye within demos possiblities, now all demos won't be paid but for some of the higher performing Freestylers Travel expenses and a perdium is considered a Free Demo for some of the smaller markets, and whether its set up as a clinic or whatever we need to get paid. However events such as the Tour circuts/Major Street/Vert Comps may not be paid all the time but space and time are premiums and can lead to greater things in the future, talk to the organizers/self promote/ add value= Opprotunity. These are some of the ideas that have been on my mind and others as well. The Question is now what does everyone else think and what can you add to help Freestyle go to the next level, its definatley going there but refining will help our cause go farther, easier, and better. Feed back is necesary. If you want to contact me directly email me: akohn@hotmail.com This is a positive discussion to improve the state of Freestyle/promotions, if one has a personal problem with my views or someone wants to chew me out, be professional about it and email me, and we can discuss any grievences or concerns. Respect is mutual. Thank you in advance for your insights.

HC, that wouldn't be an old Rey Meyer Freestyle board would it? If its white with a comic strip look that sounds like Rey's old board from Santa Cruz Skateboards, I've seen a few here and there at shops in the Bay Area.
Speaking of boards, hopefully my new freestyle boards will arrive anyday ( i ordered two from Casper Industries, one YO YO and one Casper)

...and Mr. Lynn Cooper, you wouldn't happen to be that Christian contemporary songwriter, would you?
lol Sorry, I was jest trying to funny. I know who you are...I use to be a hardcore freestyler in the 80's on the East Coast and recognize your name...I can even (still) picture your face from the mags. Glad to hear you and others are still "kicking". I too still bust out my board and freestyle once in a while, but am more into "low-impact" skating nowadays. I have some old freestyle videos of me, however, they are pretty lame compared to what I use to be able to do. No runs or nothing, just me standing in front of the camera doing tricks. I wish I had video of my runs when I competed and was at my personal best...but Nooooooooooo. I can STILL do an oldskool Steve Day handstand kickflip. Believe it or not, I use to be able to do one of those doing a 360 shove-it. NOT ANYMORE!
Anywho... Take care!

i've seen all the current freestyle videos that have come out. richy carrasco's demo, primo's demo, the casper video and flatlands. the demo tapes are cool but very short and poor quality. lynn's flatlands video was good but the best stuff on it was the old 80's footage. alot of us have never seen guys like pierre andre skate before. but so far the best freestyle video has to be the casper video. all the skaters are really good and the video itself looks more current. tommy harward and daryl grogan blew my mind. but all the skaters were super good and there are alot of crazy tricks.

Hi, Dalton, is Comet in San Diego? If it is you can just come by the Casper Industries Show Room on a week day before 4pm and Bobby and/or I will show you some freestyle basics. Give us a call: 760-439-9944.
The Exodus Skate Rock Jam this week end was great! It was a Christian event put on by Dennis Martinez that drew about 500 skaters. Flatland freestyle demo's by the Casper Team and Primo and Diane rocked the spectators, big time. So much so that the Exodus Tour promoters have invited the freestylers to do a show at the next two events. Since the next one will be in Oceanside, California, Casper is now thinking of having a championship freestyle contest as part of the action (that will be at the original bandshell)!
Two weeks ago, a "pick up" WFSA demo team of current flatland champion from the Casper Team, Daryl Grogan, Staton Team member Robbie Adams, Casper artist and WFSA announcer Nils Hanson, and vintage longboard Pro "steelwheel Bob", preformed a "History of Skateboarding" mini show. Went very well and we got some "invites" to future gigs from the promoter that has an 11 city tour going on called the "Art of Skateboarding"
