Hey holy rollers, I wanna ask an annoying thing (sorry).
Freestyle? Where's the gear these days? I'd love to put a setup together, all I can find on the web is some Tracker 105s (cool!). No wheels, no decks.
Any tips for shopping, you all? Please don't say ebay. I'd love some powell freestyles and a basic 27x7 ish board (umm are those the right kind of measurements? Its been so long since I even saw a F'style board! Why did I ever sell that Mullen Chessboard!!??), so if any of you generous Headz wanna pass on some bits.... Or, does anyone know of any decent blanks, or bigga blanks that could be cut down nice?

HOLY CRAP!!! I looked at Ebay and found a Rodney Mullen SMA Dogfood freestyle deck and the bid is at $100 so far.

What gets me is this board is even used (look at the deck top pic)...and what REALLY gets me is I had one of these decks for the last 10 years never used and in mint (but no plastic wrap) condition. That is until last winter when I got some skidplates for the ends and griptaped up the top. And because I didn't like the graphics, I spraypainted the bottom red, laid a lace doyle overtop and spraypainted black to make a black and red space-like pattern.
Frankly, I didn't like the shape (nose and tail too short) so I never hooked it up before. Anyhow...carry on!

Where to begin.....? First off, I will not take sides. Repeat..., I will not take sides!!................................
I can't believe that I had to open my letter by saying that! There shouldn't be any sides at all when it comes to the promotion and future development of the sport we love! Yes, people will have different opinions, but everyone's opinions is extremely important and deserve to be heard. All of us, both freestylers and those who admire and support us in spirit, have to be willing to take some chances and some flack. Those in positions of responsibility need to do just that...........be responsible. No one ever said democracy was easy.
These forums are public therefore; egos are always at risk of getting squashed. People have reps. to uphold and credibility to defend, so when a posting gets personal that's when things go to sh*#t. Lately, it seem as if we have all digressed to the lowest common denominator. This my friends…..is not productive. I’m good friends with many of you, but more importantly…….., respect all of you. Let’s keep it real.

Wow Bob, whats with all the anger? I was just at the F-Forum and you where singing highly of me (old guns/young guns in the Freestyle discussion)and when I was out in California you seemed to be fine with me we even had a long conversation about Freestyle and even Nils liked me. I posted my opinion and you didn't like it and for some reason took it personal even thou it wasn't directed towards you or anyone in particular just a general statement to light a fire thats all. I come onto this and it seems you are doing the oppisite and including me in your rebutale with Shannon, whats with that? IF you have a problem with what I do or am about contact me. Who is this posting as Bob Staton? Is it really you Bob? I can't believe that a person that is apart of the WFSA would say these things or act in this way without emailing the person of questions or issues they may have with an individual, thats not the WFSA way, is it. I placed an order with Casper about two months ago, and they haven't sent it yet, they aren't replying to emails, the phone has been disconnected, and the website is down. Are they out of business? I probably know as much or more as anyone that was not there about what actually happened because I have been following up on AJ's story.
Al Garcia did make the attempt to join Daryl but they would not let him in with his board, and this is probably the fate others would have faced had there been others available to join him. The SPAUSA ( a WFSA member organization) had a booth there and Heidi had nearly two hundred kids with her that she tried to get in on passes to, among other things, see Daryl. Daryl is her major skater, that is who he has a model board with. I brokered the deal and got him a % deal equal to a top street skater.

And why should it be left to me? Who are you/AJ to tell me or anyone else what to do and come down on us if we don't. Show me where anything AJ et al did last year has any connection to this year? I talk to Daryl all the time, there are a number of people out here that have taken every path they can think of to get flatland freestyle into major events like the X-Games. You don't know who I am or what I do or anything. I'm 60 years old dude! You want me to go there and demo on my 2x4?

Yo! dude! We sure as hell did! It was the L.A. Inner-City Games, a three day event that was supposed to be sponsored by the X-Games, and at one point was called the Inner-City X-Games. They pulled out the day before the event because they got into a beef with the Hollywood Sports Park managers.. They were suposed to supply the WFSA with a canopy, hats, shirts, and boards to give away. Bobby came in on the second day and saved our ass big time, he went to the management and got them squared away as much as possible and provided the prizes and product that was promised us by the X-Games people. How come you don't know any of this??? I sent AJ the offical three page print out that clearly describes the X-Games involvement at the bottom of the last page.

And the proof of that is??? The fact that I have been in four videos and on two TV shows, and a TV segment that gets replayed and an interview in Transworld. Plus I run two jams a month, hundreds of mile apart. and attend the meetings of two sk8board associations I founded to develop sk8 parks. And also coordinate activities like the LA Inner City Games and the ASR Show, and many pieces of graphics and broker deals for sponsorship of any number of skaters, and compete successfully against skaters 1/3 my age.
I get attention from my three loving adult children and three grandchildren who support me and help staff the WFSA events I do.

Sorry we missed the event at Rengstorff. Next time you'll need to give us at least a few weeks notice and plan it on a day where we don't have a race/event planned the same weekend. I know you mentioned that we could possibly do a slalom and freestyle event together but I don't think that would be possible as we run our events on hills....plus I try and concentrate on one type of skating...If I have a race I probably wouldn't be thinking about flatland or vice versa.
The World's are late Sept...so perhaps we could run a flatland event again up here in October?

I agree with A.J. and more could have been done and he was right about the ball being dropped by the West. By no means is he a West Coast Basher or a troublemaker(as you said in an email not even to him) he was just trying to get things going with something you guys should have been doing all along, as if his posts about last years events weren't enough. Rengstorff Park Jam in Mt. View California
Well, this trip I decided to go in style and not take the stinking Greyhound, so I rented a new Pontiac Grand Am. Love that car, it hauls butt and handles really well.
I had to first go down to Redondo Beach and pick up Nils. That added an extra 200+ miles to the trip! We raced up the 101, (except for places we didn’t, it being Friday night and all) to a little vine country village called Corralitos, where my son Robert lives. We got there at midnight; tired, hungry, and ready to watch whatever new movie Robert had copied the night before. Nils and I set our sleeping bags out on the floor in front of the TV, got a big bowl of ice cream with Ovaltine on it and watched the latest Star Trek Movie.
The next morning Nils, Robert and I headed north in the silver Grand Am, up through Santa Cruz and over the 17 to Silicon Valley, stopping along the way for a big breakfast.
Some how we managed to miss the Rengstorff turn off and had to double back past Mitchell Park where we had the last jam about five weeks before. We had never been to Rengstorff Park and were surprised to see that it was very much like Mitchell Park with grass and trees and berms and this great big round concrete area sunk into the ground with a bench wall all around it. Rengstorff has a band shell connected to the circle; actually the locals call the circle "the Bowl". The stage part of the band shell has a lip that sticks out over the circle a few feet. The local street skaters love to do tricks off the lip.
When we got to the park we noticed that there was a community skate park about 50 meters from the band shell area. This was a surprise to us so we walked over to check it out, it sucked big time…one of those neighborhood parks designed by committee…above ground on cheap asphalt with steel ramps and wooden slide rails (O.K., so it didn’t have wooden slide rails)
Exactly no one was there and exactly no one skated there all day.
We didn’t actually get to the park until 12:20pm, and we found no one there, but that has happened before. When it does, we wonder if this is going to be the time when no one shows up at all. About 15 minutes later, three locals, Dominic, Alex, and Nikolay showed to skate the bench and stage. Then Dan, and his two friends, Jannik and Jonas came along. They had been looking for us over at the suck park. Dan was at the last jam and really got into what was happening with all the different things we bring. He was a local that just happened by on his bicycle and joined in, borrowing boards and skating every style available.
Soon Manual and Erika showed up with their giant cooler filled with refreshments. This time they brought along a 4-foot long sandwich! And some of Erika’s select and tasty Tofu hot dogs…mmmmmmm.
So now we are skating, Erik Matlin showed up and things are humming along. The street guys eventually started to do flatland tricks and even trying things like rail stands and pogos.
Nils was actually ‘grounded’ from skating for some domestic error, so he…ah, well, ah appeared as an apparition above a skateboard and created in our minds a very realistic illusion that he was in fact skating. Amazing! Robert took a number of pictures of Nils but they only show him sitting on the grass under a tree with a frown and a tofu weenie.
I talked to Erik for a while between the skating, he told me he was moving down to San Luis Obispo soon to go to school at Cal Poly. He was skating well and working on some really hard tricks. We decided that after he gets settled in at school, we would put together a jam in his area, probably in November.
We brought the bullhorn that Powell loaned us for the Inner City Games, so Nils decided to play event director and hustle the troops in to one of the advertised activities. Apparently this is what Dan was living for and had traveled the long hot 7.5 suburban blocks to the jam to accomplish… kickin’ booty on all comers any which way. By this time the side street boys were fooling around with the high jump bar but were in no mood for competing. Dan’s homeboys were somewhat reluctant but eventually got drawn into the testosterone zone and were gung-ho for the whole deal (do 9 year olds have testosterone?). Manual, Erik and I were like ‘what ever’ and went along for the heck of it.
I think we started with a highest ollie contest, then a longest ollie, and then high jump. We were going to do a few other things like 360 and 3-in-a-row best trick but there were not enough of us with the burning desire it takes to turn a neighborhood skate session into the Casper Classic II.
Manual was skating great; he looks smoother every time I see him. Erika is just learning to skate but did show improvement over the last jam. She seems, at least, more confident, maybe in a few year she will be doing Primo and Diane type doubles routines with Manual.
That reminds me, a little earlier I was sitting on the wall writing out awards and got the urge for one of them there tofu dogs.
I asked Erika for one and she handed it to me wrapped in a piece of dry sprouted wheat bread, I took a bite…mmmm, a few seconds later I was fumbling for my reading glasses and dropped the darn thing…then as I was moving my feet around to find the stupid thing. I accidentally stepped on the &*$5# thing! Imagine gritty tofu dog mushed into those little diamond shaped holes on the sole of your Vans. Aw well! So I just went over to the cooler and lopped off about 11 inches of fresh meat medley sandwich to comfort myself.
The Dan, Jannik, Jonas, Nils crew were inventing all sort of folly, like a coffin contest under the high jump bar. They also had a great session of ollieing off the stage. Robert got some great sequence shots of all that stuff as well as hundreds of pictures of all else and everyone else skating that day. The side street boys had gone around the side of the stage building and found a curb to skate, Team Dan soon followed and soon there was the full-blown curb session going on. Someone noticed that a police car had pulled up in the lot and three cops were standing around and leaning on their vehicle of gloom. Actually what had happened was that the side street boys saw the cop car as it was pulling in and slipped over to the curb area away from the stage. Skating is allowed in the bowl, but not on the stage. The cops never left but never approached us and soon we were back to flatland land with joy in our hearts. We had to wrap it up around 3:30pm so we could be on the road by four. We had a heck of a time getting the high jump bar away from Nils and Dan, they were locked in a death match for the highest jump and could not beat each other…this went on for a really long time. Nils can actually get his body higher then Dan but his technique is weaker, his feet point down. Dan has perfect feet-to-the-side style but can’t get the air Nils does. I called an end to the duel, after all Nils was just an illusion, so the gold went to Dan.
Well Dan did kick booty on all comers and went away with three first place awards, a gold medal for overall winner ( rhymes with wiener) and…..are you ready for this? A brand spankin’ new Daryl Grogan Skateboard Deck.
I thought about it later, how cool it was that Daryl was in L.A. giving out his demo tapes at the X-Games and I’m 365.43 miles away giving away a Daryl Grogan Deck! Kind of like Daryl was in two places at the same time. Actually that is the WFSA concept in action, to be able to have several events, large or small going on in many places around the world…well you have to start somewhere and Rengstorff Park is as good a place as any, and a nice compensation for any skaters at the jam that wanted to go to the X-Games but could not. This will happen again soon. The ReverseFreestyle Swedish Open will be on one of the same days as the WFSA ‘King of California” 3 day flatland sk8 happening at the ASR show in San Diego.
Dan Troyan is like our jam series poster boy. Here is a HIGHLY talented 14 year old kid who just happened by our little jam in Mitchell Park and became completely absorbed in all the skating we showed him, from flatland freestyle to longboard power sliding to slalom…we have a picture of him doing daffys under the stage lip and under the high jump bar. He has a great thrust for learning new styles of skating, a creative and open mind and the ability to do all things well. We like this kid a lot.
We packed up the Pontiac and said goodby to all and were down the road…well a few miles down the road anyway. We stopped at a Saturn dealership so Robert could get a part for his car. While that was happening, Nils and I sat in the lounge and watched TV and ate comp donuts. I was looking out one of the giant showroom windows and I said “Nils, check that out… a huge X-Games sticker on the glass”.
Well the only thing of interest on the trip home was the restaurant we stopped at in Oxnard. A 50’s type of place with Americana type food. Nils was hungry for a Turkey dinner but they did not have that so he went for the trout instead. I got some lame breakfast item. The serverperson set the trout dinned in front of Nils and we both just stared at it…it was a whole and complete fish with the head and tail and skin attached. In my 60 years, I have never seen a fish dinner served that way. While Nils picked open the head and was checking out the brain, I asked the serverperson how Nils was supposed to eat it?…like corn on the cob?
I looked down at my grub and thought…boy! What I would not give for a tofu hot dog right now.Back to top

First lets clear up a major piece of information. Some of you were wondering why there was no promotion for the Daryl Grogan Demo at the X-Games, the reason for that is there was no official demo, this was a brave and bold act by an artist determined to be seen and to prove once and for all, for public and promoter that flatland freestyle is back and it is exciting and creative and interesting and deserves to be a part of mainstream skateboarding and 'on board' at all major sk8 events world wide.
What you should have been told is that Daryl was going to go to the X-Games on a pass and find a place to skate and hope he does not get thrown out. It would not have been a good thing if that happened, and worse still if some of you went there expecting the demo to be a legit, advertised part of the program. This is exactly what happened to some people Bobby and I talked to at a trade show last year. A woman with two kids saw the hype about the freestyle demo, on the f-forum, at the east coast x-games last year and went there expecting to see a freestyle demo,
not knowing that what ever actually did happen there...was not officially a part of the X-Games.
Now, back to our story...
As you know, many of us have been trying to find a path to the x-games, and all other major events, through the front door, and have failed at the x-games...so far, but we will, of course keep on that path and succeed where ever possible.
Daryl did manage to find some great areas to skate and for the first two days was happily moving around the x-games geography and attracting attention with his skating. By Saturday the BMX flatlanders were finished with their events which left a hugh area with a perfect surface open and unused. This area was central to the outdoor event areas and in perfect view of the grandstands. As per usual, Daryl ripped it up to the amazement
of the crowds watching the scheduled event next to him. Even the event staff was impressed and let him continue and even began to bring him water etc.. Daryl was able to talk to kids and families from time to time and pass of his promo tape, between the other events . By Sunday Daryl was an accepted part of the entertainment and had his pass upgraded etc. Many people got to witness what we have been saying all along, flatland rocks! Daryl had a great time and loved everything about the set up, he would liked to have had a few other skaters with him. Al Garcia did make the attempt to join Daryl but they would not let him in with his board, and this is probably the fate others would have faced had there been others available to join him. The SPAUSA had a booth there, the org. that produced Daryl's Pro Model. Daryl will probably be an accepted part of the next x-games along with a few other top freestylers. The Sid and Johnny approach seems to have worked...once again, where all other attempts have failed.
The feed back from Daryl's performance, at this point, has all been good and has prompted requests from other promoters for flatland activity at there venues.

TV Exposure for Freestyle -- FYI -- I did a 4-minute segment on freestyle for broadcast on the new Fox Fuel Network -- show "Surge". It's national but still limited to certain systems -- check Fuel.tv to see if you get it in your area. This segment "Jammin Freestyle I" is a compilation of some killer freestyle skating from events around the world including the '00 San Fran Worlds, '01 Barrio Games, various demos and jams to date (HB, LA, SD, even Switzerland) -- featuring Daryl Grogan, Lillis, Kevin Harris, Richy Carrasco, Primo & Diane Desiderio, YoYo Schulz and many more! Other segments to date are: Deathrace '03, Bahne-Cadillac SlalomX, and WLAC Scene '03. Lots more to come.
I'll be adding streaming video to my web site (OffTheRailsTV.com) scheduled to launch Sept 1 including some clips from these segments. I'll also be releasing longer feature length DVD's on all these and more.

I had a discussion with Mr. Daryl Grogan last night and I was confused and lets say a little ticked that he has been the only one demoing at the X Games this year. I understand people have things to do/family and that it might be a drive for some and what not however there is no excuse that some of you if not all of you can't make it this weekend and give Daryl some support. This is the X Games a guanteed crowd of people its a no brainer? Seriously, we had 10 guys for three days at the X Games last year, not to mention the two man demos(2 days) at the practice course, and the crashing of the "real"Street Comp. last year where Joe Humeres, Terry and JJ had about half of the streets crowd(4000) come over just to watch them and had to be asked to leave due to possibly insighting a riot which helped us get a demo before the executives at their dinner and all we had to do is show up and skate. A total of 5 hard core days of demoing in front of thousands. It doesn't matter if you are a beginer or as advanced as Daryl the point is to show up and let people know that Freestyle is alive and you need to do is go and skate. I would suggest getting together at the event and putting something together or get in contact with Daryl I am sure Casper and others could contact him to let him know when you will be there and they can let you know when he will be there or perhaps give him a call. It is important to have a presence there we did more than our part on the East its time for the West to pick it up from there. People from all up and down the East Coast came to the event all out of there own pocket and time and made an impact and had a lot of fun in the process. Now I know Bobs "Jam" is this weekend as well, a conflict of schedule with an event over a year in the making (X Games) and guanteed exposure, personally I would go skate with Daryl if I was out there on the West and so would most if not all of my East coast colleagues. There are some really good Freestylers out in California that don't come out to any of the events, and thats ashame get over what ever it is thats keeps you from skating at other events (lack of organization,low turn outs, little or no exposure, ones ego or whatever) and skate this one for sure it is guanteed exposure, it can be a loose and "Free" format and it is alot of fun. It just makes sence. So go Skate with Daryl!!!

P.S. If this offends anyone I appologize nothing personal meant by it just stating my opinion and opening people up to other possibilities and thinking that gets results. Which remindes me if there is a Casper Classic 2 perhaps consideration for it should be scheduled around this time as well again its amazing what a month and a little foresight can do. Just some food for thought.

Flatland jam in Mountain View.
Rengstroff Park in Mountain View also has a Skatepark.
It's metal, and not a great park, but kinda fun to dork
around. The spot for the Flatland jam is on the other side
of the community center. A flat concrete area with a
stage. There one sweet spot on the concrete for spinning.
I'll try to make it out and dork around. Should be able to
draw a bunch of skaters over from the skatepark to test
their flatland skills.

It's coming at me like a bat outta hell!
This is a really big industry show! This is not a public friendly show, it costs $40.00 to get in. Sing up for a WFSA contest event and it can't cost you more than $5.00 to cover ins. to get in..what a deal! I must have your name submitted by 8/22 to get you your pass!
The WFSA theme for the three day show is "focus on non-profit org. activities" related to and in conjunction with the WFSA contests, jams and various other activities being run by WFSA, BFSN, and GFSA members around the world.
FUNDING, FUNDING, FUNDING...this is the greatest opportunity we all have for getting our message across to the top industry mfg's. and event organizers. SEND ME YOUR EVENT, PROGRAM INFO. IN A FORM I CAN PUT IN A 3 HOLE BINDER FOR DISPLAY IN THE WFSA BOOTH! It is possible for you to email items I can print for you at work. Posters, pictures, cards, anything non product related, that tells what you are, and have been, doing for Am skaters around the world or and in your home town. Funding for non-profit orgs. is always related to am events.
Ask for money and funds for equip. to run your activity and to advertise it properly for a year. Be as precise as possible about how much you need to put on your event (s). You do not need to be concerned about non-profit status as we can connect your activity through WFSA channels. Zap the packet of dazzeling concepts to me ASAP!
