hey richey whats up with another edison park freestyle jam? last time we talked you said you might throw one in december.what are your thoughts on that? if you are busy with other stuff right now i totally understand.life can be hectic sometimes.i had alot of fun at the last one & it would be cool to skate with you & pope again. next time i want to bring some of my non freestyle skater friends & try & convert them. all skaters should try freestyle at least once. especially street skaters. after all where do 90% of all modern street tricks come from? freestyle shaped every flip & spin trick out there! i once saw an interview with the great jamie thomas & he said almost every trick he does was influenced by rodney mullen.tony hawk said that he first started doing fingerflips & thinking of all the varials that were possiple in the air because he watched rodney skate! think about it,two of the greatest skaters of all time are giving mad props to freestyle! december is tough to schedule for alot of people because of the holidays and all but what about january or february?

Mr. Bean,
I never claimed that this was a new trick. Back in 1982 a guy named Thomas Hierling (RIP) did this trick in his routine too. I have old super 8 footage.... Georgio was also inspired by Thomas and has worked on this trick for a long time.Other notables are Frank Messmann, who did this trick too back in 1984; he had the board fixed between his feet in mid air.
Freestyle is just GREAT! We are working on fotos and a report for Concrete Wave magazine. YOYO

Yoyo...ummm...you may not believe this, but I was doing that very same trick back in 1982 and even did the move in a Del Mar contest I entered back in '84. However, I called it a "Helicopter".
I thought of it while inclass in High School and couldn't wait to get out and work on the move. It took a long time to wire, and most of the time I called it a heli"chop"ter because of how sometimes I would land with one foot under the upsidedown deck while the other landed ontop and crunching (chopping) the other foot. Honest! (I have pics and video to prove it)
Regardless, the move is awesome and kudos to whomever was doing it. I can't wait to tell my old skating buddies of this.
btw - I took a Paleontology class once and this reminds me of a a type of evolution where different species would develope distinctly similar traits regardless of them living in different ecosystems in vastly different locations and in different periods of time. The precise term eludes me, but the concept is there. I believe it happens and this occurrance is a fine example.
Another example is when I jokingly told a kid I made up the Gazelle (afterwhich I caught some serious flack from him and others). The first 360 shove-it I learned in the early 80s (maybe even late 70s) was riding fakie and landing fakie. Well, the next obvious variation to that is to ride fakie and land regular footed, which is essentially what a gazelle is. Although I take no credit for the move as is termed, I did truely make the move up in my own small part of this wide world. I believe this has happened to many other skaters throughout the last 30 years also. Scary, isn't it?

I meant to say Santa Rosa Park in SLO and not the city of Santa Rosa, hundreds of miles to the north. I have not heard back from Erik about the 15th but that will probably work for him. I will go anyway and pull in a few others in the next few days. There is a big concrete slab in Santa Rosa park, it was the site of skate contests in the 80's. There may also be a good spot at Cal Poly in a big building used for experimental student projects.

Bob Staton posted that he is interested in getting a jam together on November 15, 2003 in San Luis Obispo or Santa Rosa. I (NoIcing) would like very much to attend if it is going to happen.
Bob Staton posted the following on the forum at www.noicing.com "I'm interested in getting a flatland jam going for Saturday Nov. 15th in San Luis Obispo from noon on. The jam will probably be in Santa Rosa, but other locations are being considered. Who would like to join us? 805-705-4817"

All:
The Grind for Life Benefit for Mike Rogers (http://www.mr1skateshop.net/M.R.%20Fund%20-%20Grind%20for%20Life.htm) will be held in West Palm Beach, Florida at the YMCA Oelsner Skatepark (http://www.skateboardparks.com/florida/ymca/index.html) on November 22, 2003. Mike Vallely from Element will be the highlight of the event. Bowl riders from all over the country are coming, as well as our freestyle crew. I was told that we can expect around 1000 people to come watch the demo. The demo will be held from 3PM-7PM.
Thanks to Casper Industries and Reverse Freestyle/Cooper Productions for their product donations for raffle. Their generosity will certainly help Mike get back on his feet. Please contact me if you are interested in contributing. Every little bit helps. If you are a sponsored skater, please let your sponsors know what this event is all about.
The following freestylers have expressed interest in attending/participating thus far.
- Cooper, Lynn [Reverse Freestyle] - Foster, Mike [Casper Industries] - Jaje, John [Casper Industries] - Leathers, John [Casper Industries] - Lee, Frank [Casper Industries] - Synnott, Terry [Capital Skateboards] - Sullivan, William [Casper Industries]
Please contact me if you are interested in joining us.
Thanks, Frank Lee
AJ:
You said it, man. Joe is a good choice too. If you get a gig together, may I come dressed as Dilbert? Pocket protector, glasses, and a plastic banana board? Ha ha.
Later, Frank

Frank your right you are a computer freak (not geek) I can see you get you freak on at one of these jams. You would be surprised who is actually breakdancing and its not just baggy pant slang talking sideways hat kids, its everybody. www.rocrite.net check it out

You said it, Dagoo. With 7 computers in my office, dozens of technical books, and spectacles, I'm certainly too geeky to be the one tapping into any breakers' underworld of cooldom. There's only one man that I can think of who's skilled and an suave enough to do that, DJ and powerhouse skater, Primo Desiderio! : )
All, please contact me if you are interested in demoing or contributing to Mike Roger's Grind for Life event.

I am pysched about the Wezberg event, sorry JJ and I couldn't make it out it looked like a fun and great overall event! This is what we have been up to actually the same weekend but in and around Philly. Philadelphia Freestyle: Friday- JJ Odonnel, Willy Sions and I (A.J.) where at the 360 Skate Spot in Willow Grove for their lock in event. We performed demos/clinics/skated with the kids from 10.30pm- about 4am the next morning (thank god for daylight savings!) Sat.- After work I called up Willy Sions and Ryan Thompson (Red Bull) and we went to the first RocRite (Breakdancing) B-boy and B-Girl Jam in Southwest Philly to check it out. So what does this have to do with skating? Everything! Ever since New York Flugtag and talks and demos with Image from the Ultimate Breakdown ideas started to gel in our heads and how it could be possible to combine efforts and learn from one another. Image and I are planning a colaboration next year possibly as soon as April at there next Jam. Thats whats been going on but now I will tell you about Roc Rite. Let me say that RocRite was amazing! It was so eloquently simple a D.J. and a smooth floor, the B-boys/girls do the rest. I was amazed to see so many people still breakdancing and the progression from what I used to see till now Crazy! As Willy put it Holy Sh#$! It just enforced our view how simular it is to Freestyle Skateboarding and Flatland Biking and this idea of combining events has been in our heads for quite awhile. But just like Freestyle Skaters its hard to find Breakers and Flatlanders beacause all of these forms are so underground from there mainstream brothers and only the truly dedicated practice these forms. I see a unique opprotunity to combine these events together and have a ton of fun in the process! Ideas, comments, sugestions, are always welcome but this is one of our goals this coming year. Filming and skating as much as possible as well as our outreach and church events its going to be a busy year! Sunday- JJ went and met the Vans team, demoed for the kids and got Ray Barbee to sign his board! Whew thats all for know more later... A.J. Kohn

That TV vid clip was awesome, Yoyo. It sure brings back memories. And it's nice to put a face to the names I've read about so many times. And I REALLY dug the "rail to handstand wheelgrab boardspin to casper" that Gunter did...I did the *exact* same trick back when I competed and even did it when I skated against Gunter back in '86 in Oceanside. Man does the clip bring back good memories!!!
