No worries Chris, I'm flattered. You should have also gone to the slide gloves page!
Check out the "multi-angled-kingpin" truck design in the trucks forum. Slalom guys would love it.

We never had cones in my day. Brought up on the street we were. No, really, I was so desperate, rephrase, stupid, I used bricks a cones once. It worked well when you hit them but it left stones which you would catch. Also I once got one stuck under the truck, took off, landed on my side. I still have the scar. No wonder my parents did not like skateboarding, they still don't. My Mum said to my partner "He's too old for that...ther's no telling him that he won't be able to do it anymore"
I then progresses to cans. I felt like a dosser going throug bins. The 6" hard plastic cones, plenty available in the 70's. Trackers were always difficult and as Smokestack sayes, very expensive. I went to a comp in Eurocana and bought a load of theirs which were remoulds of Trackers. Oh no !!!!! I just realise I've drifted back to cones. God I sad. I'm going to get a life. Chris
Well until the first slam anyway

The price of cones?

What you've got to remember is that it's quite expensive to produce a mould for the cones. Thousands have to be sold to break even.
Consider this; I've got a 1978 Sims pricelist. The 'tracker' (same cone different sticker) cones were $1.95 each in the US. This is when they were getting rid of thousands of them. In the UK, the tracker cones sold for between £1.50 and 2 quid a pop. Let's factor in inflation. The cones don't seem so expensive after all, do they? Remember a Turner was £80 in 78.
I've still got the same 30 tracker cones that I got in 78. They've probably been used a thousand times. They're still perfect. That's value for money!

I here yer woes guys. I heard that Tracker is now producing 9" cones but when I called to see how much they are, I `bout stained my shorts....$3 (US) each. What`s that about $4 quid over there? And not including shipping costs. I`m not so much against laying out that kind of investment, because they will virtually last forever. My prob is if there was a sanctioning body like the old ISSA or the USSSF, and they spec`d cones out at dif dimemsions, that would be one heck of a bad investment.
I say go with the soccer cones. If they are retailing for $.60 US in lots of 400 or more, imagine what prices could be had if they could be bought direct from the manufacturer at lots of 1000 or more.
BTW...I have 25 of these cones from Alan Sidlo and they work just fine..

As I say cones will be a reasonable price. They will be the mother of all cones, a cone amongst cones, the ultimate cone. And Paul, cones will be free, yes FREE. ie, you buy 1000 and I'll give you a free one. (joke) Seriously, they will NOT be expensive...and as soon as I can tell you the price I will. But as of now my lips are sealed. As the cones make excellent megaphones I will be shouting form the rooftops when they come in.

mike,
those cones are the ones currently used by Psycholloyd and a few others, yeah the base has got to be cut off & the top popped out, but they are still less than a dollar a piece. OK shipping costs etc makes it a bit prohibitive for us over here.
All i was getting at is that Turner's posted that price would be comparable to soccer cones.

Paul K, yep I've seen those already. wrong plastic, the base needs cutting off, and then you need to ship them over here, then you pay duty (20%). Those cones end up costing a lot. Simple solution: The cones are made to our specification. Exact height and width. Right consistancy of plastic, no bases to cut off. Shipped over in 1000's Stacked up to the ceiling in your local skate store. And still for a good price. Loss leader....I'm certainly losing my hair on this...Cones, dont ya just love em?

Soccercones do not as far as I'm aware go for $1 in the US. If they do they are too small, too flimsy, or they are saucer shaped jobbies. The most popular cone is 9" tall, with enough 'weight' to stay put, but enough resilience to bounce out of the way. We have looked long and hard at various sources, researched the old manufacturers and obtained many, many quotes, from the US, UK and other suppliers. Cost: Someone had to fork out for a new mould, which is very expensive, and that someone, in part, is me. Simple choice, 4 weeks snowboarding in the US or part of the cost of a mould. Call me stupid but I went for the mould. Prices will be competative. Ie less than cones cost now, if you can get them. If they are not you guys won't buy them....and i'll never go snowboarding again.... Believe me, once these babies land your quest will be over.

beer cups is a good idea, and if i drank it would be an even better one!!
seriously though, if slalom is to develop we need cheap cones - really cheap. i'm not having a go, and i realise everyones got to make a little something, but even at 1.50 thats still nearly 40 quid for a set of 25. so with a basic good board costing about 160 complete the all up spend is now 200 quid.
whats the answer, maybe the industry should consider a loss leader in much the same way sky established themselves in the UK... i.e. get the product out at a loss (or cost) with the aim of reaping the cash back in with future 'ongoing' sales.

soccer cones in the US tend to be about $1 each (some are about $0.90c), are Turner going to follow that competetive price
