That guy is dangerous. Unlubed bearings can freeze (I mean stop suddenly, like a engine without oil) when You drive them fast. Maby he is only selling fully sealed lifetime greased bearings. Verry cheap, no maitanance and of course slow. How knows. I would not trust that guy, anyhow.

Bearing cleaning
On 9/16/2005 Dave wrote in from United States  (216.255.nnn.nnn)

I've been riding for about twenty years now and I've seen and heard a lot about equipment and maintenance. This week I wanted to clean my bearings, so I dropped by a skateshop near my place to get some lube. The guy who worked there was setting up some boards for a couple young skaters when I asked him if he had any bearing lube. First he said he didn't have any, then, when I saw the Bones speed cream, I asked 'isn't that bearing lube?'. He said yeah, but that it was a waste of money.....now here's the kicker. He tells me all I have to do is wipe down my bearings with a q-tip (I ride Bones Super Swiss 6, which mention, specifically, not to get lint into them), then just put them back together. When I asked him what he uses to relube them he said 'No lube, just put them back together! Said I don't need it! I mean, not for nothing, but here's this guy, setting up boards for a couple young kids, and he doesn't think you need to lube your bearings! I was tempted to ask him if he puts oil in his car! I just think it sucks that he's giving out lousy info, especially to kids just getting into the sport.....kids that don't have the money to buy new bearings, and whose parents may not have the healthcare to take them to the hospital when their bearings seize up and they get tossed. Just wanted to know if anyone had any opinions. Thx.

Ridin the best
On 9/16/2005 Oli Pascoe wrote in from United Kingdom  (212.158.nnn.nnn)

Ive been sk8boarding 4 about 5yrs now and the best bearings ive ever ridden were the legendary Bones Swiss Ceramics. When in the bigger ramps i got so much speed on the way down i barely had to put half my effort into pumping back up the other side. I clean the regularly with speed creme and an old t-shirt and they r still goin fine after 5 months. i ride with Ricta Speed Lines so that prob. helps as well.

Only used them on 7 runs and already dirty
On 9/10/2005 Don Jackson D J wrote in from United States  (4.239.nnn.nnn)

In only used the Biltin abec5 bearings on 7 runs and 1 is already a little sluggish. I'll need to clean and lube them often I suppose.

Biltin bearings
On 9/9/2005 Don Jackson D J wrote in from United States  (64.115.nnn.nnn)

Dr NO your everywhere! This question is for anyone who maintains Biltins, I have Biltin bearings, gonna need to take them apart soon and grease them (no oil, I wanna use grease) and I have no 'special' tools to do this, I suppose the way they are built, I wont have to 'take them apart' because it is open on the one side, is this correct? I should just be able to put them in solution to clean, then grease em' up? Any advice on them helps. Thanks guy's

Abec 9 Bearing
On 9/7/2005 RocknRon wrote in from United States  (68.69.nnn.nnn)

You will never see a real ABEC 9 skate bearing. Abec 9 is the highest ABEC rating and only a couple world class manufacturers only make a couple special gyro sizes with ABEC 9 tolerances. There are no 608 ABEC 9 bearings of any kind in existance manufactured by anybody. If you think you have an ABEC 9 bearing, Ive got news for you.

Cleaning those bearings
On 9/7/2005 EBasil wrote in from United States  (63.206.nnn.nnn)

Your bearings are fine if you're happy with them.

There are three basic possibilities for your bearings:
--shielded: the shields come off by removing a c-ring on either side, using a sharp implement...I use an X-acto knife usually.
--Sealed Rubber: the seals come off by popping the rubber seals out gently with like an Xacto knife or something
--Sealed/Crimped metal seals: they're not designed to come apart, but you can tear off on side to clean them.

Hey, why not go to SilverfishLongbording.com and click the Tech Articles button on the front page...I think there's a bearing cleaning article there.

BWII location (?)
On 9/4/2005 roger wrote in from United States  (71.105.nnn.nnn)

Hugh,

We need to get a crew together, go to a moderate hill (helmet/pads good enough), and get s#@! loads of runs in. We can take turns swapping bearings/wheels and collecting data (you need to ride too) and post some BWII stats. This time I will bring my PDA for logging and calcs. Lets do this!

How about at the very bottom of Spunky Canyon- just before the uphill run-out. It has a beautiful view of lake, good visibility of oncoming, and a shade spot at the bottom. The bottom’s last two turns (big sweeepers) are moderate enough for pads only riders. Could also suit up, start higher up, and look for differences at higher speeds. Unlike the upper crazy sections, the bottom of Spunky is a nice smooth roller coaster.

Or how about some of the saddle sections of Ridge Rd off of GMR. They are mild enough for pads only, good visibility of oncoming and maybe even some shade. And can get in some higher speed runs as well.

I wonder if the dump rd in SJC got repaved, that would be a blast too!

Roger

Re: Cox Swain Abec 11
On 9/2/2005 Dr. Erwin Trunkmest wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

I found out that this guy seems to be a cheater. An official of SKF, the german bearing manufacturer told me, that there is no Abec 11 tolerance. And the one and only bearings that could bear the name Abec 11, are sold throug the owner of Abec 11 and are called Biltin Bearings.
SKF send me a factsheed about bearings. And regarding to this, the proffered bearings aren't even good for skating, cause they are greased and not oiled, they are designed for the automotive industry and have a to litte clearance. So hands off!

Keep on riding!

Cox Swain Abec 11 Bearings ?
On 9/1/2005 Dr. Erwin Trunkmest wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Has anyone ever heard abeout these bearings? They are offered as race bearings at ebay.de by bearing manager. I always thought Abec 9 is the limit for bearing-tolerances and Abec 11 are wheels made by Chris Chaput.

Who Knows more?

They are good - and how to clean
On 8/25/2005 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Hi Abe,

Your Bones Swiss are good and fast. You can clean them with Citrus degreaser, I cleaned mine with gasoline. I didn't like the cleanig. I rinsed the bearing a lot with the cage removed, but it was impossible to get all the dirt out. I could still hear noises coming from a tiny grain of sand. In the future I will just relube them and buy a new set of bearings like bones red or biltins for 20 Bucks when the old ones are worn.

How to clean the bearings:
Remove the Bearings (carefully don't bent the caps)
clean them with a cloth or tissue
The Bones are open to one side (no need to remove a cap)
You can remove the cage if You like (the balls can now fall out, take care its not easy to reassemble the balls - they pop into the chamfer only when You put them close to each other)
Rinse the bearings a few times, change cleaning fluid
Rinse again until the bearings rotate without making scratchy noises
Dry them (best with compressed air)
when You've used a water based cleaner take care that they are absolutely dry
reasemble the cage
Relube them with a good high speed oil e.g. Bones Speed Cream one or two drops for each bearing
Bones recomends to lube the outer surface of the bearing as well to prevent rusting (dont know if the bearing will move inside the wheel when lubed from the outside)

Have a nice ride!

I use the same oil the millitary uses to oil there guns in Iraq. It soaks into the metal and drys up completely and when exposed to heat it lubes up. Its perfect keeps bearings clean cuz it keeps them dry.

AZ Steves Big Island Tip
On 7/31/2005 hugh r wrote in from United States  (68.232.nnn.nnn)

Steve! I have marked that spot on my must skate map for the trip next week! I appericiate the tip!

On a bearing note:

I was cleaning under my ramp the other day (the riding surface is wasted, so some repairs are way over due) and I noticed one of the loaner powell kick flipper decks I keep around. I decided to give the wheels a spin... and to my amazment, they spun fast and smooth... oust moc 7's, after spending 13 months being exposed to this desert... ;) HR

Cleaning bearings
On 7/31/2005 Ian wrote in from United States  (217.43.nnn.nnn)

Hi Martin, I had to guess how much citrus cleaner to use as well but as I only had a small amount left (It all seemed to evaporate, even in a closed bottle) I used what was left mixed with water probably 1 part cleaner to 10 parts water. Going back, the first thing to do is to remove the seals, I find a very small screwdriver best for this job, inserted next to the inner race. After removing seals just stack the bearings in the container with the spacers inbetween each one, add the diluted cleaning solution and shake for a couple of minutes, test that all the bearing spin free and then use water to rinse all the cleaning soluting away( this involved changing the water quite a few times). Straight after shake and wipe all the water you can from the bearings and then use a domestic hairdryer to dry the bearings thorourly. After they are all bone dry add the lube (one drop for each bearing) press the seals (cleaned) back in place and spin bearing to distribute oil evenly. Give the outside of the bearings a light wipe with lint free oiled cloth and Bingo!
Having said all this many people say you should never use water when cleaning bearings(which makes a lot of sense) but tends to involve the use of a lot more chemicals, some of which are not very pleasant. If you make sure you are carefull with the seals and ensure bearing are bone dry then they should be nearly as good as new.
Good luck
Ian

Cleaning Oust Moc-9's?....
On 7/30/2005 Martin Drayton wrote in from United States  (67.41.nnn.nnn)

Hi there,
just got the cleaning kit and new speed oil for my Moc-9's and kinda hoped there would be some kind of guide in there...sadly there wasn't.
All the years I have skated I have NEVER cleaned and changed the oil in my bearings, just wiped them and eventually got new ones!
Anyone got any advice, don't want to ruin them...

Martin.
