Sorry about your downhill run, thats what happens when dirt is flying all over your bearings. Try Bones Labarynth bearings to make the seal tight and wash immediately when any slowing happens. I just got some old school wheels. Even the owner of the old surf shop couldn't come up with a PERFECT solution for my precision bearings. The wheels are hard and don't have seperate core to insure bearing placement. You have to lube the wheel before you place the bearings in. You need a bearing spacer wider, by 0.5mm, than the inner space of the wheel (between the bearings place). The spacer and the lock nut keeps the inner races from spinning and thus no axle wear. If the outer races are not perfectly square and in align with the inner race the bearings will slow and wear faster. Thus you may need a bearing press or a socket that only touches the outer race to even try to square up the bearings. But an oversized bearing spacer could help you to square the bearings together but not necesaraly the square to the wheel but close enough. While the wheel is on the truck without the nut you can press the socket to the outer race which will square it to the spacer. You'll know you have perfection when you take the nut off and spin the wheel and observe the inner race. If it wobbles even a microbit your bearings are not aligned. However, it's still possible that the outer races are closer than the inner ones while appearing square, especially since you were pressing them in. Thus if you take a few turns at this time its probably going to be as close as you can get while using lubrication on the wheel so the races will slide on their own. Otherwise, you would have to have a press that is automatically square AND presses the outer race center only to the inner race center and there is no such tool. Use two sockets and a vise. Never press the shield.

The ABEC 7 greaseballs I bought recently are definitely not top of the line. After about a month of hill bombing one of the little f#@!ers is already clicking. Considering the amount of money I paid in shippin and the fact that they were still late as a mother yea I would not recomend buying bearings from Sector Nine.

heck yea lets see that test, but i think you'll have to be a helluva lot more precise and scientific than hugh r, those tests were a bit mad-hillbilly. the noticable difference in quality bearings is SO small...

Julien,
You know I've got at least one of each. If you want to do an intensive fact finding mission / comparison / malted beverage study, I'm in.
Know any science majors that can set up a double blind test?

What do people think is faster: Bones Swiss (not the super 6 kind, just regular) or Rockn' Rons? I have both kinds and I still really like my swiss (first bearings I've ever purchased and still feel damn fast) Rockets seem to get up to speed instantly but don't seem to carry it as well -Julien

how tight?

I go until the bearing starts to bind just a little, then back off a little. A small amount of wobble is OK. The important thing is that the wheel spins freely. You want the least amount of wobble possible without binding the bearing and slowing the wheel down.
Then, after you ride it a bit and the bearings have time to seat themselves in the wheel properly, check tightness again and do the same thing as before.

Will anyone help me with a bearing question? Once you get the bearing installed into the wheels correctly and replace the wheels on the axle, how tight do you tighten down the axle nut. I noticed that as you tighten down the axle nut, it starts to restrict movement of the wheel. Any ideas? Thanks, I just bought a set or "Reds" to replace my crappy abec 1 bearings.

I live in a piece'o'crap town that really doesnt like skateboarders too much so starting up has been...well...not easy. I got a complete for christmas last year but it was just a starter board. I love my trucks and my deck will work for now but I really need some help finding some good bearings. Unfortunately i havn't the slightest as to what to look for. I'm mainly into street skating so if ANYONE can help me out it would be really appreciated. I have GOT to get new bearing because the ones i have are SERIOUSLY sucky! Plus, i can't keep up with my friends or my boyfreind...HELP ME!!

the only way to put bearings in backwards if if the are only sealed or shielded on one side like bones bearings you want the seal facing out. but this is not really backwards they will still roll fine the will just get dirty much faster

O.K. is it possible to put in your bearings backwards? if so, then wich way is the right way? Like is there a certain side that has to be faceing the outside when you put them in the wheel?

Builtins in Kriptos

I have been thinking about using Builtins on my longboard, but I have Kripto 85s on it and my understanding is that the hub will not allow me to use the Builtins. Is the correct or is there some other way I can get away from having to double up on my speed rings to get the proper seating of my bearings?

Bearing removal

Caleb, better just throw them away!
No, just kidding. Try this:
Take the axle nut off. Grab the wheel firmly and "rock" it back & forth on the axle end. (The first one is likely to be more difficult.) If that's what you've already done and it still doesn't want to come out, try this: Put a small drop of bearing lube, or even 3-in-1 Oil, at the point where the OUTER ring of the bearing fits into the wheel. It should quickly spread itself around the perimeter of the bearing and kind of seep in between the bearing and the wheel. Now you can do the old axle-leverage trick described above. Also, wearing a pair of work gloves might give you a better grip than using your bare hands.
The "drop of oil" trick works wonders for getting bearings to pop INTO hard wheels as well. Put a drop on your finger, smear it around in the wheel, and the bearings will go in easily.
