Bearing Review

On 7/14/2006 yoyo schulz wrote in from Germany  (62.225.nnn.nnn)

Marty, I fully agree.
Ed is a very nice and supportive guy and his products are truly great.
I have been riding PTs since 2003, mostly for Freestyle and Slalom.
My favorite is the green sealed ABEC7s, fast right out of the tube.
For Freestyle I am riding a 'strange' setup, which has a ceramic bearing on the inside and a regular bearing on the outside. Why you may ask: The answer is simple. The inner bearing takes heavy side loads during railstands and tricks where you land sideways. ALL bearings had failded, even though I had used spacers all the time. The other day I disassembled a wheel, and the bearings still roll like new. Anyways, I never had a bearing 'explode' like I have seen with street skaters and I probably weigh more than twice as much.

I bought PT's as practice bearings due to the price and the rep they have with some very fast racers. I have to say that even though the price is VERY attractive the quality of the bearing is quite high. With cleaning & regular lubing, they will give you much boom boom pleasure all season long yankee.

Seized bearing
On 7/13/2006 PoolHog wrote in from United Kingdom  (62.255.nnn.nnn)

Hey guys, anyone know what to do with a seized bearing? On a trip to the Staes last month, I bought a set of Ron's ceramics in a skate shop we passed in Connecticut. I got them home (UK)set 'em up and rode 'em for a week till I heard a strange buzz from a wheel. Three of my wheels rolled fine, one didn't. I stripped them down to find one bearing had pretty much seized. I've tried various methods of cleaning but to no avail. I'm always meticulous about how I set bearings, using the recommended spacers and speed washers, but am at a loss as to what I do next. Only wish i'd set 'em up whilst I was out there, maybe that way I could have taken them back to the shop. Any ideas guys?

Totally agree with Slim.
You get what you pay for! But Eds are excellent value and the service is very hard to beat (second to none).

I'm sure many of us have used the Pleasure Tool bearings from Edsbearings. They are a great value. Can't beat them for the price, that's for sure. I think there are faster bearings, and bearings that stay cleaner longer because they have better seals, but the Pleasure Tools are a great product and they have excellent customer service.

Get some oiled bearings like Rockets or Bones. You will find a lot about lube and cleaning on their homepages.

Inline Skates
On 6/28/2006 Scott wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Hey does anyone know how these bearings would work in a set of inline skates, I play hockey and am looking for a fast set of bearings. I have seen a lot on swiss bearings being the fastest but am not seeing that these bearings could be better, also is there a specific lubricant and cleaner you recommend with getting a set. Thanks for your help.

Marty / Ceramic Rockets
On 6/20/2006 RocknRon wrote in from United States  (68.69.nnn.nnn)

Hey Marty, Please email me. I will and you a replacement set free of charge. Sorry to hear of your problem. Email me at: ron@californiabearing.com

Actually, Rockets have LESS radial play than Bones. Rockets are made with a .0002-.0005" radial Play vs. the Bones uses .0005-.0008". George himself told me they do that partly so the bearing can take on more dirt and still run. We have the oppisite philosophy. have a better seal and keep the bearing cleaner. We design the Rockets with less radial Play for less Starting and Running Torque. What size spacers do your zigzags take?? Ill send you spacers too that mighg help. I am puzzles about the slop. I only ride 8mm axles now and I havent experienced that. I will look into it.

Dan, I think I owe you a set of D/H Prototypes. I havent forgotten. Just got back from a 8 day skatepark tour/vacation. This week for sure.

hartl3y, email me. Ill send you a trial set of Rockets.

On Precision Spacers, we sell them with our wheels. We ONLY sell wheels with CUSTOM MACHINED spacers for EACH wheel. We measure each wheel core and make a custom spacer for that wheel core. Thats why we dont suppy spacers with the beairngs. We have no idea what kind of wheels you are ridding them with. With Bilt In Bearings you will need a shim in teh middle of most wheels Ive seen. The extended inner ring on the biltins arent wide enough to make contact with each other and propery preload the bearing with 10mm wheel cores or bigger. So if you buy Biltins, you may need to shim it to preload the bearings properly. I have 3 wheels with Biltin with a cut-away in the wheel so you can see the gap between the bearings and that they arent preloaded. I use them for displays for explaining why spacer size is important when customers come in. I also have a cutaway wheel with Rockets and the correct size spacer. One thing I have notice good about the Biltin's with the built in spacer is because stock trucks have undesized axles and allow for bearing mis-alighment, the fact that the inner ring on the bilt ins is wider that other 608's, it stabilizes and corrects that problem a little bit. It stiil goes again my philospphy that biltins theoredically will only work correctly and preload the bearing correctly if the wheel core is less than 10mm, Otherwise there is a gap. Thats just my experience. I am so anal about the right spacer size, we make a spacer for each wheel like I mentioned above.
Rain bearing you ask, we are working on those as well. Tough nut to crack.

Our newest R&D work is on a Downhill/Slalom Only Bearing. It will be ball-less. The worlds first non ball skatebearing. Will have practically no torque whatsoever. Downside is it wont take the abuse of Street skating and hard impacts. It will be made strickly for accleration, SPEED and low torque. It will be a friction-less bearing. It will handle the side loads, dont worry. I really want to make something different for downhilling/slalom. We are hoping to have out by years end. This will be eventually our official DownHill Rocket. It wont be a ball bearing.

There is NO SUCH THING as ABEC 9 Bearing excecpt in Gyros and some Aircaft Series Bearings. Each bearing would cost more than your whole deck if they made a ABEC 9 skate bearing to ABEC 9 Tolerances. Im sorry bro, you've been had by ABEC Fraud! Its what put me into business. To be quite frank there is no such thing as ABEC 7 Skate Bearing either. Any Bearing marked ABEC 7 is a fraud. Only China will mark a bearing with "ABEC" whatever. Its against the law here. But in China......

bearings
On 6/20/2006 slim wrote in from (71.146.nnn.nnn)

i like bones swiss and have used them for years but many of us have started to buy rockets instead of bones. they are just as fast (i think faster personally), and the bearings stay clean longer thanks to the labrynth seal (bones is starting to offer this as well but rockets have always had it). And guess what? Rockets cost less. It's a no-brainer in my book.

theres a lotta different stuff out there but i'll keep it to the ones you asked about. from my experience, the swiss will last longer than the reds, and they're a slightly higher quality build. basically, they will stay smoother longer, but you won't notice much difference in speed. as for the super 6, they are an improvement over the regular swiss if you're into speedboarding because i think they get up to speed (over 30mph) a bit faster; otherwise i don't think you'll notice much difference from the regular swiss. if you ride in wet conditions or don't clean you bearings often then stick with reds. if you take care of your bearings invest in swiss. if you're into bombing hills check out super6. hope this helps

Really accurately made STEEL spacers have a WAY bigger impact on speed.

See Vendors' Corner or Buy-Sell-Trade for info on precision spacers.

re: biltins not fitting on Randall trucks
On 6/15/2006 Bushman wrote in from Canada  (24.84.nnn.nnn)

JONO, if your running Randall 180 mm trucks, the Biltins should fit just fine. All my randall trucks run Biltins no prob. do you still have the speed washers from before on the axles??? get rid of em if you do,. Also check the locknut, if its tall it wont fit. get a thin locknut for the wheels and you'll be fine.

hope that helps.....

Biltin Bearings

Has anyone had trouble with biltins not fitting right? I have Randall 180's with Abec 11 83 flywheels, and the bearings were so wide that my axle nut wouldn't fit on all the way to the locking threads. I was riding and my wheel came flying off and I had to chase it down the street. Luckily didn't get hurt... Anyways, any feedback would be appreciated
