Bearings
On 8/1/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

I guess some people are just paranoid about dirt in areas they can't actually see,"how can you be sure there isn't dirt on the inside of the shield, that's just waiting to mix with your fresh lube and contaminate it,oh dear"personally i just wipe off the outside, add triflon, let it soak in for a minute, wipe off excess, put em back in the wheel,go real fast, wipe off what spins out.You can feel when a bearing is smooth and spins free.I have a set of swiss that I disassembled to kill sometime last january, some kid left them at my shop ,half of them were rusted tight,I got them together again and they are "ok",but i don't use them, anybody wanna buy them?,cheap:)P.S new bearings rule, well broken in new bearings.

china shields
On 7/31/2000 jonnieo wrote in from (216.224.nnn.nnn)

The shields are made of brass, coated on one side and the edges with red rubber material. The rubber holds them in the slot, not the brass. I removed one once on a dead bearing by just shoving a piece of coathanger wire between the balls. I never tried putting it back in though. I don't see why you want to take it out either, but do what you want.

china reds - cleaning
On 7/31/2000 todcar wrote in from (198.39.nnn.nnn)

I guess I don't understand the need for this. They are only sealed on one side, so I just pop mine out, clean them and lube them up. Am I missing something? It doesn't seem like popping off the red seal would really make that much of difference.

China red sheilds
On 7/31/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

The sheilds look as though they may be pryable, but if they warp they are shot. So,then you pry the bearing cages(carefully) first, move all the bearings to one side then push at the sheild from behind, not all at once, turn things around and push evenly. The fit between the balls and the races is pretty tight so things shouldn't fall apart, after the sheild is out, even out the spacing of the bearings and clip the delrin cage back in.Naturally, the cage should be cleaned while its out, soaked or blown clean with compressed air. Disassembling bearings entirely can be done, practice reassembling bearings on an old bearing that means nothing to you,if you're thinking of trying it on a good set.

bearing service
On 7/28/2000 Jonas wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

I have used many methods for cleaning bearings and have only removed the Powell ball retainers once.I don't feel it's really needed unless you have used grease for lube and want to get it all out.Powell bearings typically only have 1 shield and bearings that have 2 shields I only take 1 off.I use 2 seperate citrus based "Turbo-wash" cleaners available at discount sport stores(Big-5).The first is for presoaking and the second is for final cleaning.I either let them dry on a lint-free towell or if I want them faster I use an electrical or brake part cleaner that is plastic-friendly.Once they are dry I apply 2-3 drops of Speedcream to the inner race part of the bearing and spin them till the lube is spread equally. This might seem like overkill and for most it probably is,but I very seldom need to replace any,and the performance is worth it.

Cleanin my Reds
On 7/28/2000 Enchanting Wizard of Rhythm wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

I wanna do a thorough cleaning of me bearings (China Reds)... I'm not sure how to take the ball-cage out though. I pop out the shield... and then... hmm... I'm afraid of busting or otherwise damaging them so I haven't done any real prying or anything...

Come to think of it, do I really need to take that stuff out to do a good cleaning?

Thanks
sK

China bones
On 7/24/2000 Herbn wrote in from (207.198.nnn.nnn)

More people recommend these than any others, but i have Speed Demon gold sheild(not clear)on my main board and they seem real fast,I have reassembled a board with my roadriders that spin very well on Reflex blue sheild (abec 5)these have gotten some negative press, but they spin quick for me,no loose sheilds even.I have a set of swiss that are not being used, they seemed quick(of course) and my ceramics are on hold, waiting for some sucka to brag and put up,on a little speed run:)that about covers what you can buy and put in your board,my Stroker board runs on 6900 series industrials (10mm bore)that are sleeved onto 8mm axles,my next trucks will have 10mm axles, these are still breaking in ,they're greased and i havn't gotten around to soaking and trifloning them, they seem fast. Now the disclaimer,I carve and slide and bomb, and don't bash things around so your results may vary, i don't stress the cages by bashing into curbs, flippin the board,or runaway boards on ramp rides, even during the slappy days i hardly ever broke bearings.

DT -- are you sure about that. It was my understanding that the Bones Bearings do not carry an ABEC rating, because they are designed specifically for skateboarding.

Swiss & China Bones

I hear again & again that ABEC ratings do not mean anything & thats cool, I'm certainly not hung up on them. But if China & Swiss Bones had a ABEC rating, what would they be? Anybody know?

designation
On 7/20/2000 Ali wrote in from (212.48.nnn.nnn)

According to an old skatebook:

Usually, the shield just has the designation for a single shields bearing, even if it is in fact used on a bearing with dual shields. This way the manufacturer will only have to make one tye of shield.

I'll check the bearings at the shop tomorrow to see if this is really true.

white lithim grease
On 7/20/2000 mark wrote in from (205.130.nnn.nnn)

I picked some up on this long ride I was doing form DC to Annapolis MD. I may post a story and some pictures of this ride at some point and foward them to the guy who has the migrationboard site. anyway, The WHITE LITHIUM GREASE comes in a little tube for about $1.75, and seems to be pretty good. It has quiteted down my bearings a little and seems to be pretty quick. I imagine it will be a bit cleaner and last longer than oil. All in all, so far so good, cheap nice and comes in a little tube you can put in your pocket.

I think the industrial designation is 608RS. My China Bones are this way, but alas, only single-sided.

not to be a hard @$$ or anything, but if u had crappy Toys R Us bearings, and switched to Ninja Ceramix, that wouldnt even be a 15mph difference. ( at least not at speeds below 50mph)

Swiss Bones
On 7/18/2000 Josh wrote in from (63.30.nnn.nnn)

My dad (56!) and my little brother (9) and I all skate. Altogether we have more than nine boards! We all got them from the same guy at the same shop over a period of three years. After I while they were really slow. We replaced the old Abec 5 bearings with lubed up Swiss Bones bearings ($35). All of a sudden my crusing speed went from about 5-10 mph up to an easy 20-25 on flat land! They aren't even broken in yet! My dad spent a lot of money and got 5 sets of Bones bearings for our boards. But I got gyped by him...he bought himself Bones Ceramic bearings!!! Oh well...if your board is a little slow, try these bearings they really work.

Full Seal 608 bearings
On 7/17/2000 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (209.198.nnn.nnn)

Blah,Hoover Bearings,USA,and FAG Bearings,USA/Germany,very likely are still making 608's that are sealed.Timinkin,USA may also, although I recall they do more large bearings, like for heavy industry.Go search online,or talk to a industrial supply company,or maybe a machine shop supplier.I know sealed 608's are out there,I'm sorry I can't recall the supplier used by the rollercoaster crew I was formerly employed with.

Hey Blah,

Check out the local Big 5... they sell some real decent "roller blade" bearings that may fill your needs. I personally like the ones marketed under the name of "Code 3".... HR

Fully Rubber Sealed Bearings
On 7/16/2000 Blah wrote in from (209.244.nnn.nnn)

Anybody know how I can get fully rubber sealed bearings (rubber contact seal) in the United States of America? I went to www.nomo.se but it's a European distributor, and I'd rather get the bearings in the states if I can. I want them so I can ride in the rain, thru dirt, and all that jazz and not have to worry about cleaning them, I'm not really concerned about speed with them (I'm not going to race w/ them or anything).
