I partially aggree with Glen. The Brick had a good shape and it did need to be much deeper. I think Skatelab has a great bowl. Screamin speed CAN be had in the deep as well as the shallow as long as you can carve well. I do agree that the "waterfall" helps tremendously. The Combi, Fontana, and the new Clairemont are good examples of the "fall". I think the keys for a good pool are plenty of depth (deep and shallow), the "fall", workable corners and no roll-in (waste of tranny and space). Oh yea, hips. Can't forget those. My four cents.

back in the mid 80's we had a series of backyard ramp contests (coincidentally titled "grass" - georgia ramp amateur skateboard series)
i think the entire series consisted of a contest at the ramp ranch in atlanta and my ramp in athens
anyways, after the contest, and more specifically - after the post contest party died down sometime before sun up - a small group of us were sitting around when tommy kay (the original "tk") announces, "you wanna know how to build the perfect pool?"
our eyes got wide and we leaned in like we were gonna hear from e.f. hutton himself and tk sez, "first.......you dig a hole."
we busted out laughing so hard that i don't even remember if he went on from there
by the way, contrary to rumors indicating otherwise, tommy kay is alive and well - he was spectating at the folly beach contest and he remembered details of sessions i had long since forgotten

also, the waterfall (money bump) between the shallow & DEEP ends is MANDATORY. No gradual angled flat or nothin. And make it Steep and abrubt, the better to Work the Deep end with my dear.

Perfect pool

of the skatepark pools I liked the best, each one had it's flaws. Making the best one is impossible. I liked the Marina Dogbowl because the shape allowed for super fast carves between the shallow and deep end, lots of lines. It's downside was that the bottom had a continual slope to it that caused you to lose a bunch of speed coming back up to the shallow end. I find the Skatelab bowl the same way, it's hard for me to keep my speed from the deepend to the shallowend. I never liked the Marina keyhole pool or Winchester pool because they were round and didn't have shallow ends to work.
With that said my favorite shape was the Brickyard Bowl. It had a square with fairly tight corners for a shallow end and a capsule offset at a 45 degree angle deep end. I would love to have seen that bowl only bigger and deeper. I like an 8'-9' deep end, and a 5' - 6' shallow end. All with an 8' to vert transition. This bowl shape allowed for a thousand different lines and was a ton of fun. I'll do up a drawing and post it later.

I don't think there's really "1" perfect pool shape. They're kinda like waves, each has their own qualities. The trick if finding the one with the qualities you like best. There are a few things I know I like....big, deep, and fast. Something like a 6' shallow end that waterfalls into an 11' deep end with plenty of vert.

By the way, coping should not be taken lightly. Out here on the east coast, the local DC round wall skates have come up with the best coping you will ever grind. Anyone needing details, let me know and I'll hook you up with those that know much more about it than me.

Perfect shape for a pool is tough to come up with; however, I like a pool with a workable shallow end (5’ to 8’ feet) and a deep end (10’ to 12’). Also a must is a “waterfall transition” between the shallow and deep end. The waterfall gives the pool that much more speed. It is hard to describe the perfect shape for a pool but you know it when you see it.
The least expensive way to build a pool is to try to do as much of the work your self as possible. Digging the hole is major. Finding people that know how to tie rebar is also a big money saver. Overall it will take some serious investment of time and money to build a quality pool.
If you are committed to building a backyard pool, do extensive research and get the insight from those that have built their own.

I'd like to get some ideas for the perfect shape for a pool, size and depth too, materials stc. Also, any ideas on how to build your own for as cheaply as possible. All advice is welcome.

For concrete work, it all depends on what you are thinking of building and the location. For bowls seek out poeple like the ECRW (East Coast Round Wall) guys from the Northern Virginia Area or the Oregon pool pool skaters. They are the type that know what all it takes and how much it will cost. If you are going to start a rogue skate park then research the FDR Park for ideas.

How did the Aggro Quicktrack differ from the Sixtrack. And the Dart 184 for that matter. Does anyone know what the main differences were and how each rode? Cheers Rick

Robert, I think this should be in the trucks forum, but I'll be quick. From what I've heard (and I know a few little birdies), you can not only expect a Sixtrack reissue, but perhaps also an Aggro Quicktrack reissue as well! Again, this is just rumor told to me by a feathered friend, but keep your eyes peeled this Fall!

Another Wally Holliday special. Phelix f.s. air. The rest of the park, besides the bowl is probably one of the most awesome street courses too, but I couldn't even take my eyes of this bowl. It streched on for miles it seemed. Now there is a reason to visit SoCal. Jeff G
