Nice try, Michael. That was too easy even without the "April Fool's" at the end.
TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION DEPT.: In western Illinois, near the St. Louis, MO area there is a group of car dealerships owned by a guy named--yup--Jack Schmitt. Their radio slogan is something like, "If you think you can get a lower price at another dealership, you don't know Jack Schmitt."
ACTUAL CONCRETE WAVE-RELATED QUESTION: If I subscribed to CW on January 23, 2006, should I be expecting to receive a copy of the Buyer's Guide? Would love to have a copy if possible.

LARRY FLYNT PUBLICATIONS BUYS CONCRETE WAVE
Here is the official announcement:
The paperwork has been completed and the deal is done - Concrete Wave Magazine now becomes part of Larry Flynt's publishing empire.
Publisher of Concrete Wave, Michael Brooke, made the following statement at his headquarters in Thornhill, Ontario:
"I've been accused of creating "skate-porn" for a number of years now and it just seemed the fit was perfect."
The terms of deal were not disclosed, but a Flynt spokesperson, said that the deal would position Flynt Publications as the premier publisher of adult entertainment and sports enthusiast magazines. Jack Schmitt, group publisher at Flynt said that plans were underway to subtly change the direction of Concrete Wave. Said Schmitt "Our intentions are to add real porn to the actual skate porn in order to grow the base of readers."
When asked about the poor financial performance and subsequent folding of Big Brother (a skate magazine that Flynt acquired a number of years ago) Schmitt responded "Concrete Wave is different than Big Brother and we have learned from our previous efforts...that's why we are adding real porn and video game reviews." Schmitt further mentioned that hair gel ads would be accepted along with ads for zit cream.
Brooke, who was last seen in the local Thornhill Porche dealership, was mum on the terms of the sale.
APRIL FOOLS GUYS!!
Sorry, if a bit late...

hey, Sure, most of the kids I see skating are doing the "try the trick 100 times, land it once" routine. But, there are some out there ripping hard. This picture is one of my favorites from the past year, becuase that's EXACTLY what it is. The next generation of skaters who have had access to parks and are going to be good at all kinds of skating, not just "street".

Yeah, I but I haven't washed in weeks! LOL
Everyone encounters something different Bud, but my personal experiences are that the vast majority of pre-teens are pretty open and curious. And not all the teens ( 14 - 16, which, face it, REQUIRE you to be uncomftorable with anyone who isn't LOL ) are so quick to get their panties in a twist over anything 'different'. I watched a 16 year old this past weekend absolutely rip a bowl nearby, very fluidly. I was amazed. I think the teen skaters who lash out on forums do so for the same reasons most people do: boredom lol You can only sit there and 'yes' it up with like minds before it sets in lol If listening to or seeing older skaters around gives them something new to bitch about, so be it. I just think they're the minority, overall.

Sorry, WT; all apologies. I make it a strict point not to affiliate myself with any political party, platform, agenda, or standpoint. As Nietzsche once said, "A thinking man can never effectively join a party, for he, at once, tends to think his way right hrough the party..." Or, put another way, see my post a few posts down.

Which of course only reveals total ignorance of the narrow-minded and ignorant middle left, center left and far left.
And now, of course, a dozen follow-ups with "can't we keep politics out of skateboarding?" Because as we all know the Maoists among us instigate bad feelings saying anything derogatory and inflammatory as they please, but if someone with a more objectivist viewpoint offers a contrapuntal opinion, well, then that's just going too far and we can't have that in a civil discussion, can we?

Good point, Buddy. Here's my counterpoint:
Growing up, in the late '80's and early '90's, and having skateboarding being that seriously serious, tech-heavy, street dwelling pastime that it was during that era, I'd always wondered how cool it must've been to have been a skater in the '70's, or early '80's- when times were simpler, skateboarding itself was new (as opposed to, just new to me), and guys like... well, I didn't even know any "guys like" at the time. I was just a clueless kid. Yet, I was sorta curious about the sport's roots and stuff. I think that's fairly normal- even today, most kids that I talk to find the history of skateboarding at least mildly interesting... thank god...!
But, let's compare that to now. Now, the "Guys like" Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta- they're all, to various degrees, back in the limelight. We're finally hearing their stories. All of these things I'd only read about... not in history books, per se, we don't have skateboarding history books... but, I'd seen in old, decrepit issues of Action Now, Skateboarder, those first TransWORLDs and Thrashers... etc... well, wow, they're back! They're here! We can actually go out, and experience them! How totally f*n crazy killer is that?!?! That, my good friends, is very, very cool.
The "Good 'ol days" of skateboarding are here, they're now, they're wow! If y'ask me, skateboarding has never been better than it is right this second. If I want to nollie heelflip a 12, I can. If I want to cruise a banana board in a backyard pool, I can. If I want Bennett trucks- who would've ever imagined this- I can go buy, brand new, reissue Bennett trucks- for less than a zillion bucks a pair on e-bay!! Oh, my gawd.... this rocks...!!!!
I'm actually going to a slalom race in two weeks, I can't wait!!! I've never even seen a damned slalom board in my life, I thought they all went MIA with the Dinosaurs in '79. Now, I am actually going to a bona-fide slalom race. Weird...
The problem with kids- well, these bleedin' kids- is that, kids are supposed to be unafraid. Curious. Go-conquer-the-world sort of mentality. I know I sure was, when I was their age! Experience something new at every turn, live fast, die young, never grow old.... punk rock! Grrr! Whatever. Now, it seems like kids are totally afraid of even the slightest little thing that falls outside of the proverbial "box". If it's just a smidge f*n different... and, I mean, realistically, what are the differences between a longboard, slalom board, popsickle, pool deck, etc? Shapes and sizes, maybe...? Whatever. If your board is a quarter inch over 31.462", then, it's just plain gay. If it has wheels softer than 105A, it is super gay. If you can't bleedin' kickflip it, well then, you'd better start questioning your own sexuality, paleroo...... 'cuz, holy s#@! buddy, you just might be gay. Gay this, gay that, you're gay, I'm gay, we're all just soooooo f*n gay around here.... and, it's all because a nation of 12 year olds can't understand that, hey, insecurity is just holding ya back, bub. It's draining the fun out of your life. Life is for living, so live it up. Don't seclude yourself to your GameSlave forever, 'cuz you can't stand falling out of line and lockstep with the world. I mean, what's up with that, anyway?! Who really gives a flying toss what the world thinks of us?! Since when did I care if Good 'ol George Dubya Bush thought I was a loser? Or, some pimple-faced s#@! for brains that hasn't even discovered his own pubes yet...? Stop letting the world think for you, jackass; learn to think for your own f*n self for a change....
When I was a kid, man, the more "wrong" something was, the more it appealed to me.... fun times, baby, fun times. I'm amazed I'm still alive, sometimes...
Anyway, I thought only the Republican Far Right was this narrow-minded and ignorant, until I saw these kids' thoughts. Yeesh...........

Back in the 70's you typically would not have had guys in their 30's and 40's skating around you. In the 70's, you were basically one, maybe two, generations from the nucleus of skateboarding. Most of the stars in the nucleus of skating were in the their early early teens in the mid 60's, which puts them in their mid-upper 20's in the late 70's. We were in our early and mid teens in the 70's. So at best, the 70's teenagers are only about 10years behind the bulk of 60's skaters.
Contrast that to now, where new skaters are can be 30 years younger than the old schoolers, and 40 years younger than the early nucleus guys.
Basically what I am trying to say is, the old schoolers age versus the new guys has never been as spread out as it is now. When I was 17, skaters in their mid 20's were ancient. Now if I was 17, 40 years would be REAL ANCIENT. Thats the same spread as skating with your Dad, except he still rips.

it's about the fact that they got a report that said "There's mould in the school...tell the occupants" on Nov 29, 2005 and they didn't tell the parents or the staff...the report was leaked.
If it hadn't been leaked, we wouldn't be discussing this.
In Canada, as I am sure in most of the world (well, at least the US!!!) if you have mould in a building you are obligated to tell the occupants.
These F***KTARDS didn't...

Sumdum, I hit up your email. Amazing.... man, thanks to the internet kids LOL My brain's smoking, churning up old memories and stuff. Crayzee.
Apologies for jacking your thread Michael.
Oh, 'that' forum. Eh, what can one expect really? They're riotous and young and know it all just like we did once LOL
For most of us from 'back then' ( creak, creak, creak ), think about it. How often did you have a bunch of guys and gals over 30 who were frequently skating around you? I didn't know any and never saw any. We weren't exposed as much to the age mix as they are now. All these old skeletons on skateboards ghosting around, of course they're freaked out LOL The little kids don't really care, in my experience anyway, and are very curious ( "Where'd you get that BIG board?"..."What kind of wheels are those?!" ..."I wish MY mom/dad skated!" ( yeah, gee thanks kid...now get outta here, ya bother me! LOL )) It's the TEENS, some of them, who are angry and feel outta sorts but good god, when DON'T teens feel angry and outta sorts about SOMETHING? And they'll have too much fun getting under your skin, so don't peel it back LOL
Ehhhh...bombing, slalom, cruising, vert, bowls etc...whatever you do, it's all done on a SKATEBOARD, whatever the length or shape. They know that but it would be a heresy to admit it LOL That's OK.

Mike, not to diminish your son's mould misadventures, but... if that's the worst thing he's exposed to on a daily basis? Then, I'm movin' to Canada, ASAP.
Here in Indianapolis, I just read a story a couple of weeks ago about a school located just downwind of a coal processing plant. Both facilities have been there for eons, apparently. Apparently, this coal plant emits huge amounts of Benzene- a known cancer-causing agent- and, it has been known for eons. All of this Benzene blows straight downwind to the school. So, the cancer risk of all the kids that have ever gone to school is something akin to, if you force-fed all of those kids a pack of cigarettes every day.
Now, I'm a light smoker, myself. It's a risk, and one that I freely assume. However, if someone in power was force-feeding me cigarettes? That, I would have a definite problem with...
So, now, they're finally contemplating moving the school elsewhere. Genius! But, I wonder, what is the fate of the entire residential neighborhood surrounding this plant, hmmm.....?
Noone seems to have thought of moving the plant anywhere, oddly enough...
When I turned 18, I exercised my right- no, obligation, really- to vote, on a regular basis. And, I did for years and years. Until I read Henry David Thoureau's "Cilil Disobidience". It made me wonder, these people that I'm actively voting for.. do they really represent me? Do they share my ideals, my sense of responsibility, my goals, and my dreams? Can I trust them to act ethically at all times? Would I place my life, my well-being, and my future in their hands, and still be able to sleep soundly at night? At the very least, can I expect them to be honest and straightforward with me at all times, even if I may not personally agree with their courses of action? Carefully considering the answers to these questions, I decided that voting for anyone that does not meet all of my standards- and, these are not terribly outrageous ones when electing a leader- does not deserve my vote.
I haven't been able to vote for anyone ever since.
"A vote for a boob makes you a boob by association".... that's my take on it. Sucks, huh?

Michael,
I only have one question and this is not a slam at Canada in any way. I find the exact same situation exists here.
Why, though, should administrators behave responsibly if they are not going to be held responsible?
In France right now there is rioting and demonstrations because the government wanted to give employers the ability to ash can anyone UNDER 26 who failed in their job performance. Now, if you're 26 you're safe for life, but 25 and 364 days and you have to find something else to do. The situation is almost identical to most teaching jobs. You have to burn down the school and rape the lunch lady in the middle of the gym floor during an assembly just to get a reprimand on your permanent record.
Between teachers' unions, spineless bureaucrats and hapless politicians, certain groups of people have carved out a secure lock on portions of the public coffers. I am sure that all these administrators at your child's school discretely if not openly said something like, "well, if we ignore it maybe it will go away and if it doesn't go away, what the hell? It's not like anyone can fire us! We'll probably all get a 10% raise for 'successful crisis management.' "
Again, this is not a slam at Canada but a true reporting of facts. This past week on US new outlets was an interesting story. The Canadian government is furious because the largest (percentage wise of the total) consumer of private health insurance in Canada is . . . health care workers. They know the system and they pay extra so they can receive care from something far away from the nationalized health system.
Why is this relevant? Well, if you think it's hard to hold a teacher or school administrator responsible, imagine how hard it would be to hold responsible a doctor or nurse who would consent to work for the state. Sure, there are "disciplinary measures," but be real. Doctors know the system is inadequate so they go elsewhere.
It would be interesting to know, Michael, the number of those very same school administrators who angered you who have children in private schools? Again, it all comes down to not only determining WHO is responsible, but then HOLDING THEM RESPONSIBLE.
What are the odds?
In the words of my good friend Tony Soprano, "whadda' ya' gonna do?"
