I laugh myself silly watching the "too cool" teens skating with untied shoes and unbuckled helmets. Whenever they bail they're chasing both, usually in different directions.

I prefer the new, high-tech skate shoes over the thin-soled Converse High Tops that I wore when I was a teenager. I typically "wear out" a pair of shoes in 6 months -- usually in the form of a burst air pad on my right shoe. Most of my skating is either slalom, downhill, or street cruising -- I don't do any new-school skating at all. I tried skating on a pair of thin soled shoes once about a year ago and was hobbling around for a couple of days afterwards!
I'm on my second pair of "DC - Reign" this year (my latest pair was purchased for $51 on eBay). I'm dreading having to find a new style of shoe since DC stopped selling the Danny Way Reign model at the beginning of 2006.
Anyway, I agree that the new-school skate shoe manufacturers have gone overboard with the super-padded tongues, but it seems that the old-school skate shoe manufacturers have gone under-board when it comes to sufficient midsole padding.

Travel ca. 14-20 Years back. Airwalk "Protoypes" and Vision "V-Series". Good Sole with Grip and Protection Lacesafer "Hi-Tops" padded, good ankle protection Maybe if you like more "board feeling" you used vans, airwalk vic and airwalk "SPUN OUT?" (with textil not full leather)
This are shoes, anyone could start from and make "a new century" skate shoe from. (pls not in china like today with cheap soles) Any other "skateshoes" are only for "show" and useless!
ca. 18 Years on Board, always "hi-tops" - never had an injury on my feet, (knock on(skate)wood!), still ripping launchramps, that terrain that most hurt your feet and ankles!
BTW. How many stoped skating the last 10 years, while twisting their ankles in that low "fat lace" shoes...

Authentic Vans are it for me! Kinda like Jay Adams, it's hard to beat the original! Even got my kids to get away from those new "Frankenstein shoes"--no more scuffing and clomping around the house 'cause their laces are tied now. And yes, we still look cool!!

hey SDS, I can't stand the new "skate" shoes either. Who in the hell thought those ultr-padded tongues were a good idea? The best new shoes to have come out in the past few years were the Vans Dr.T high tops. Which vans promptly deep sixed after 1 year.(or so) lame. I'm looking at the new emerica McNally high tops; they're supposed to be a spring release...but who knows? Glad to hear you guys are working on a new shoe. Got my fingers crossed that you come up with a winner. chris olden

Shoes? Is that what they're calling those moon boots that most kids skate in, now? The tongues are 5" thick and most younger riders don't lace 'em up. It's a wonder that they even stay on the skaters' feet. LOL! Sorry, I can't deal with the current foot coverings that're being sold as "skate shoes." My feet are extra wide and I like to feel my boards when I'm skating, so I prefer the old Vans hightop shoes with the normal tongue thickness. I can sometimes squeeze into the Vision hightops from the '80s. The Big 5 Sporting Goods stores will have blowout sales on the the black suede ones for $19.95 USD like they're doing again, right now. Also, look for the Madrid Fly shoes to come back. They were made from 1983-1994, originally. Just like before, they'll feature the rubber toe-cap and be intially available in a hightop. Vans and Madrid have joined forces, once again, to offer a real skate shoe. I can't WAIT! In my opinion, those were always the best shoes to skate in. I'll keep everyone posted when they're available.
A good cure for the modern day moon boots is to disect the tongues and remove a desired amount of the foam filler. Then, sew 'em back up. At least then, you'll be able to lace 'em up and they'll actually funcion/appear like a regular shoe. LOL! To each their own.

Hi Greg! Hope all is well....I will check on the mail situation...I do know that there are a number of folks who work for US Post Office hellbent on messing with my mag!
Sparky, glad you got the goods....as for shoes, don't get me started. I figure a huge number of skaters today would be nailing more tricks if their shoes were actually laced up.
Let me throw that one out there: to lace or not to lace? that is the question.

Michael,
I got the buyer's guide this week-end (thanks for the stickers, a personal touch and I had run out.) My eight-year-old daughter wants one of the 80" pintails listed in there. I saw the contest for the artwork. I showed it to my wife, and she cringed, now I really want it. I'd insure it, and put it right over my couch.
Shoes, am I the only one out there who likes lace-up shoes minus the uber-thick tongue, that fit like a normal pair of sneaks? It's just a thing with me, if I wore them like most of the younger "pro's" these days, they would fly right off of my feet. On my last pair of Vans, I had to remove padding from the tongue in order to allow circulation to my toes, why do they pad the tongue so much?
Oh well, thanks again Michael, can't wait for this new issue.

License To Zoo
By Cullen Poythress
Posted 04.11.2006
Zoo York has teamed up with Skechers USA, Inc. for the design, production, and distribution of a new line of Zoo York Footwear. Under the terms of the agreement, which were released this March, Skechers will handle all back-end functions of the new brand, while Zoo’s current business team will oversea all marketing and advertising functions.
It’s an unusually rainy morning in Manhattan Beach, California, and Zoo York Vice President Of Sales Mirko Mangum has just flown in from NYC to meet with the folks from Skechers about the two companies’ new footwear-licensing partnership. As a former pro skateboarder, Mangum admits at first he was wary about working with a company from outside the ’core industry, but he says given Skechers’ resources, track record, and its willingness to listen and learn about the skate market, he has little reason to be insecure. “It’s a simple matter of partnering up with the smartest guy in the building,” he says.
According to Ecko Global Brand Director Rick Harrison Wolfe, this isn’t the first time Skechers has entered a licensing agreement with another footwear brand, and he says success is largely determined by hiring the right people to head up each project. “We’re very autonomous in the men’s fashion world,” says Wolfe. “When we did Ecko Footwear, we found designers who were the best in that world. With Zoo, we went out and found one of the most reputable skate designers. We hire specifically to what we’re doing, and that goes all the way down to salespeople. We know we have to hire salespeople who can relate to the skate market. Skaters are very passionate about their world. If you have people making shoes or apparel who aren’t passionate, it becomes very obvious very quickly.”
Mangum says retailers can expect the distribution of the Zoo York Footwear to be in line with the brand’s apparel offerings. “Yesterday we went out and talked to accounts like Jack’s, Identity, Liberty, and Active,” says Mangum. “We’re following the Zoo York apparel lead. If we do really well with our apparel at shops like Jack’s or Active, those accounts become natural partners for the footwear.”
He says the new partnership opens up new opportunities for Zoo York aside from expanding its product offerings: “For us, the riders get paid better, we get to do more tours and traveling, and we get to continue to do stuff like the Phoenix Am because the deal will allow us to sponsor more events.” Mangum adds that retailers can expect Zoo York Footwear to be endorsed by pro riders. “Three quarters of the guys on the Zoo York (hardgoods) team are under shoe contracts with other companies, but the guys who aren’t, we’re working with them now.”
For Skechers, linking with Zoo completes the brand’s portfolio. “We have women’s high fashion, we have men’s high fashion, and we have an urban piece,” says Wolfe. “The one thing that was lacking in our portfolio was skate. Partnering with Zoo rounds out what we do. Skate is such a growth lifestyle business right now and everyone wants a piece of it. Action sports is one of the most important movements I’ve seen since I’ve been in footwear.”
Zoo York Footwear is slated to ship for back-to-school in late August of 2006.

It is great to see the transition by so many to the use of Slide Gloves as protective gear! For your information Chris, I'm 56 and looking forward to many more years riding a skateboard. It is my belief that these gloves have produced the most profound advancement in safety for any and all that will ride a skateboard in the streets. This statement covers the entire history of our sport. For those who ride vert, Knee pads did the very same thing for you. Can you imagine any of the great vert skaters being able to do what they do without knee pads with plastic slide pucks? Put on the gloves and have a good time!
Chris, I would like to invite you and anyone else who can attend, to make it to my 60th birthday party in 3+ years. I can't think of a better way to celebrate than by skating. Mark your calanders, it will be 11-22-09.
